View Full Version : Why does Shredder say he never bluff?

I am confused about the episode "Get Shredder". They have this running gag where Shredder makes a threat and the person calls him a liar, then something bad happens and Shredder says, "I never bluff".
That doesn't make sense. He lies in a lot of episodes. :ohwell:

He lies when it fits him, otherwise not.

Donatello said he was bluffing about the retro mutagen cannon in Turtle Trek, that line always reminded me of the I never bluff lines. Then he proved he didn't bluff by using the cannon on Gargon. He proved right there what he said I never bluff.

I'm guessing the surprise in this is that he frequently didn't make good on his threats before. Can an example be given of a time from earlier in the series that he made a threat that he never had the slightest intention of carrying out?

I'll be generous, and think the latter. The running gag amused me, actually.
As for the "I never bluff" line, it served its purpose well, if only as a short-term goal. After all, its main purpose was for foreshadowing and to heighten the drama in "Get Shredder." It's not wrong to call it out in terms of the overall continuity or of 87 Shredder's overall characterization, but, like many things in the 87 series, file it under "depending on the writer or the episode's context."
Either way, 87 Shredder has lied like a cheap rug in previous seasons, and "Return of the Fly" even called him out on it (the exchange below is from memory, so feel free to correct me, etc):
Shredder: "Of course, Baxter, have I ever lied before?"
Bebop: "Sure, Boss, remember the time you..." (Shredder covers Bebop's mouth to silence him.)
Shredder: "Shut up. I wasn't asking you."
And then, the Red Sky seasons gave him a new characterization, so the matter should probably be treated as "starting over from scratch." By the way, good catch about "Turtle Trek" and how Shredder actually did give his word about reversing Gargon's mutation.

That shocks me too. Shredder actually kept his word?!? :teek:
Btw, anyone caught some odd editing at the beginning of Turtle Trek? When Leo was caught in the gears, Shredder had a concerned look on his face as if he was worried about Leo. The next scene it showed a sword cutting Leo free. At first, I thought Shredder felt guilty and saved Leonardo.

I thought he looked excited that Leonardo was going to be destroyed. Either that or maybe he was just nervous he was going to bluff, since he's so used to failing to destroy the turtles.
