No need to worry. You posted on the right section of the board. Unfortunately I've never gotten to eat the Crunchabungas, so I can't help you there.

They were puffed corn, so I would image they would be close to Pops cereal process wise, but pizza flavored instead of sugared.

Not to allow Mr. Turtle to derail the thread, I would think just about any of those would be close enough for the purpose of making a home made version. Although I honestly don't know what the process of "puffing" corn is. Is it even practical to do outside of a factory environment?

Yeah, that's why I'm trying to hunt down bland equivalents that can be doctored up with pizza flavoring (how hard would THAT be to find/make?), because I'm not sure how one would make a homemade puffed corn snack.

EDIT: Found a site that had recipes for puffed corn...but all were for caramel corn. Not like to couldn't puff it and not caramelize it...but still.

All of those seem to start with corn puffs that are already puffed. "Place corn puffs in a roaster" etc. And I think those recipes are basically using popcorn as "puffed" corn. Which isnt really the correct product for this project. It's pretty clear when eating a Cheeto or similar snack that they arent made of popcorn. Or rather the process is different.

It really a matter of texture. The texture of "Puffed" corn is completely different than popcorn.

Unless you were able to purchase corn puffs that are MADE for this kind of thing. You might want to try contacting Post and see if you can buy factory direct prior to seasoning (although they'd probably make you buy 200 lbs of it or something)

Why not? When they say corn puff it's not really puffed corn. If you look at the ingredient label for just about any kind of cheese puff, the first ingredient is corn meal and the second ingredient is oil. Same goes with the crunchabangas.

You take the corn meal, mix it with water and shape it then deep fry them. I'm pretty sure I could use a cookie press to do this.

Personally, if you're going for "authenticity", I might try buying those "Graduates Wagon Wheels" that Jester mentioned, and see how they taste, then modify your recipe from there, since the Crunchabungas were a similar shape. (I suspect that's why Jester suggested them. :twink:) The Graduates Wagon Wheels say they're a "carrot and cheese" flavor, but I'd imagine the flavor would be [B]extremely mild, since they're intended for toddlers. If the flavor is mild enough, you might be able to mask it with the additional pizza flavorings. Just a thought. :twink:

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae39/nintendophile/crunch2.png

Oh, and here's a video on how they make "Funyuns", which are also made from puffed corn. You can see the machine extruding the corn meal under extremely high pressure and heat (starting at the 1:00 mark), which might be pretty difficult to replicate at home. Might be easier to buy the "unflavored" corn puffs, and see how they work out.

Sorry for the lengthy post! :twink:

:::EDIT::: Forgot to mention that I used to LOVE "Pizza Crunchabungas", so I hope you're able to replicate a reasonable facsimile! ^_^

Terribleness wrapped up in the shattered beliefs of a young Ninja Turtles fan who had once thought that everything TMNT related was awesome.

Seriously, am I the only one that hated Crunchabungas? I remember forcing them down during a lunch in elementary school, and wondering how the Turtles could have led me astray.

It's all coming back to me. The lonely bench in the lunch area, the bright afternoon sun which promised a break filled with joy, but only disappointment...

Stingray69
05-18-2012, 12:14 PM
All right so heres what I came up with and they taste pretty darn good.

What you will need.

1 1/2 cups water
1 tbsp Tomatoe powder ( i was not able to find it so i made my own)
1/2 cup corn meal
1 1/2 tbsp romano cheese
1/4 tbsp garlic powder with basil
1/2 tsp paprika
1/2 tsp shake n bake parmesan crusted
3/4 tbsp sugar
oil for fryer
piping bag for icing

http://i1116.photobucket.com/albums/k563/superman15857/IMG_6960.jpg

OK I couldnt find the tomatoe powder so I bought sun dried tomatoes. IF you have to do this to, you have further dry them in the oven. Lay the tomatoes on a cookie sheet and bake at 200 degrees for 2 hours. Then places in a a food processor untill it forms a nice powder.

once thats done take the 1 1/2 cup water and bring to a boil add the 1/2 cup corn meal. Mix well with a fork. Place in piping bag and pipe onto cookie sheet. Dont press down to hard when piping you dont want to smoosh them.

http://i1116.photobucket.com/albums/k563/superman15857/IMG_5196.jpg

Let them sit for a for minutes. while there sitting get the fryer ready. I dont have one so I just used a suace pan. fry them up golden brown.

http://i1116.photobucket.com/albums/k563/superman15857/IMG_0791-1.jpg

Combine all left over ingredients into a bowl. I put the mixture into the food processor to stir everything up. Once the corn puffs are cool coat in the mixture.

There crunchy outside airy inside and kind of like a saucy cheese pizza. I can't recall 100% the taste so if any one wants to give them a whirl and thinks that they need tweaked. Let me know and we can figure it out.
