View Full Version : Do you think Lionsgate is done with TMNT DVD releases after this year?

For those who didn't see it yet, Season 10 was officially confirmed to release this year in August with all 8 episodes. So about 95% of the original cartoon will be on DVD by mid-year.
Now with the entire series out Lionsgate has four options:
- Release one last DVD set of missing episodes, "Planet of the Turtleoids," "Once upon a time machine," and the Turtle Tip shorts.
- Rerelease all 10 seasons in one massive boxset next year during the hype of the Nick TMNT era.
- Rerelease the series on blu-ray (which is very unlikely)
- Lionsgate finally sells the original cartoon to Nick, and then its up to Nick/Viacom to decide what they want to do with the series.
What do you think will happen?

I don't see a dvd happening for what is essentially 70 minutes of footage. Another option they they could explore is to create a compilation "Best of" or "Greatest Hits" disc for the soccer mom buying dvds for their kids demographic with the missing eps. along with a random assortment of others thrown in to fill it out a little better (Or the other Turtleoid/Hokum Hare episodes). That would be better than nothing.
The complete series collection is realistic. Most of the other shows they did that with had structured season sets released, and then a complete collection as opposed to the weird volumes at the beginning eventually giving way to season sets like TMNT had. I doubt that makes a difference. They've done complete collections for other shows like Little House on the Prairie, Saved by the Bell, Will & Grace, Fraggle Rock etc..

A good thing about a complete series set is it'd likely include the two skipped episodes as long as they follow a single episode list, which is the only reason they got skipped over before.

For sure. Can you imagine how pissed we'd all be if they did do a complete series set and STILL didn't have those episodes in there??!

Part of me kind of hopes they sell the rights to Nick. That way Nick could potentially air re-runs of it. Though I'm not sure that's something they would actually do. I'm also unsure what they would do DVD wise.
I'm definitely in favor of Lionsgate releasing a full series set. That way I can just get it all in one nice package. Would also be the perfect opportunity to include the missing episodes and some special features of some kind.
Out of curiosity, what company has the rights to the '03 series? I wouldn't mind seeing a complete series set of that released too.

I can foresee a huge complete collection in the future soon. It would be interesting to see them in bluray.

Nick owns the 4kids series.
Many of us hope Shout Factory releases season sets of the 4kids series, since they release a lot of old Nick shows on DVD.

We probably don't want to see this show on Blu Ray either. If it wasn't made to be broadcast in 1080i High Def or whatever, then it's almost always guaranteed to look worse unless the company shells out the time and money to convert it properly.

Bluray makes a lot of sense. Except use the Bluray to put massive amounts of episodes on one disk. As I mentioned in another topic before you could theoretically fit the entire series on 3 Bluray disks at DVD quality. It would take up a lot less space then all those DVDs and you'd have less disks to fiddle with.

We've discussed the Blu-Ray issue, but I'd say unless if the Nick toon does at least moderately well, this will be it as far as OT releases. At least Lionsgate is enjoying the Avengers success and this means more room for video releases. But at least for now it means my VHS tapes of those lost episodes are still cool collector's items.
But I'd say the best bet is to release perhaps a "Season 5 Special Edition" containing the missing episodes. It would help though if there is fresh demand for the OT causing the now out-of-print DVDs to be rereleased.

I would pay $10 for a DVD with Planet of the Turtleoids, Once Upon a Time Machine, Turtles and a Hare, the Turtle Tip shorts and maybe a special feature or two.

This. That's all I'll need to complete my collection.

To think some of us are just willing to shell out extra cash to Lionsgate for a bare-bones DVD with the missing episodes on it.
Lionsgate doesn't know what they are missing here. We're practically begging them to take our money.

Except you represent a small group who combined wouldn't even cover the production costs of the dvds.

Its a bare bones DVD. I am sure the last few season sets haven't been selling that spectacular either, but they keep going.
BTW, does anyone know the sales figures for Season 8 and 9? I am really curious.

As am I but even a bare bones DVD cost money to produce. They can't just make 10. To keep production costs low, and prices down for us, they have to make a certain number of disks. If they can't recover that cost then releasing the product isn't worth it for them. Obviously season 9 pulled a profit or there'd be no season 10 release. A 3 episode disk with a made for TV special most people don't remember though doesn't sound like it has a lot of potential. Even with extras and I'm sure tracking stuff like the Turtles Tips down wouldn't be easy at this point.
This stuff all sounds like it should be simple and basic but sadly that isn't how it works. Just like releasing a widescreen uncut version of Turtles Forever state side should be simple but clearly it isn't.

Well that's mostly because the people in charge of Turtles Forever in the U.S. were idiots.
I am still hoping Shout! Factory does proper season sets of the 4kids series sometime next year, as they've been releasing tons of old Nick shows to DVD. I think they may actually get the ball rolling since I assume the 4kids series will air on reruns on Nicktoons eventually.
Nick didn't spend $10 million on the 4kids series just to lock it away in a vault. They obviously want to re-sell it and re-air to make back that $10 million purchase.
As for Lionsgate, I agree with you, but stranger things have happened. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

I'm really hoping for a bluray release of 2K3. That show would look great in HD. Here's to hoping I guess.

I wouldn't jump to conclusions just yet. Nickelodeon will re-release the 4Kids series when they feel the time is right. It may take a while though, so don't hold your breath.

So you're saying they took $10 million and threw it at 4kids for no reason? Nick didn't have to buy the 4kids series, but it was sold to them anyway.
When Peter Laird first announced the deal of selling the Turtles to Nick, it was specifically stated that they gave $10 million to 4kids for that particular series...the other $50 million went to Mirage.

That 10 mil could very well have been to make sure they owned the rights to all characters and anything associated with the 2K3 series so they could use it. I don't argue they should do something with it but I have a feeling that was the main reason.

I am sure Mirage owned the rights to all the 4kids created characters like Hun and Bishop, same way they owned the rights to the original cartoon characters like Krang, Bebop, and Rocksteady.
Nick specifically bought the series and Turtles Forever. They'll probably air it on Nicktoons sometime and hopefully get it out on DVD or blu-ray.
Lionsgate on the other hand still owns the original cartoon, so Nick can't do anything about that. But at least they can use the characters.

I thought there was some charactors that mirage did not own. I may be wrong though.
Id like to see a complete set come out of this.
4Kids had some rights that related to licensing of the TMNT in merchandise or something I think so they likely bought that along with the 2k3 show as a bonus. And yes the OT is an old show while 2k3 is fairly recent, they could've easily thrown 10 million dollars just to not allow 4Kids to air a turtles show while they build their new show or take any spotlight from their show. I am sure they'll release it eventually but if their sole intention to purchase it was to re-air it or release it they would've done it by now.

I think Timelife should buy the rights and release the whole series in one boxset with extras. I mean look what they've done with Real Ghostbusters and now Power Rangers. Why can't Ninja Turtles get the same DVD treatment?

I just want Back to the Sewer on DVD. Its ridiculous that it never made it out in the States. Also, is it too much to ask for a single TMNT show to have a proper complete DVD release. Its has yet to be done and at this rate the first one will be Saban's Next Mutation. Truly truly sad.

I've been hoping, they'd be riding the coat tails of Nick's new show, and the rush will suddenly get people interested and pray and hope that SALES go up!
I was pretty worried about not being able to complete the series, so I imported stuff, for both the FW and the 4KIDS series. (now all i'm missing is the Season 10 and the uncut release of Turtles Forever) so... I'll be complete anyhow... but..
**warning dvd fan boy dreams*
I hope they PREMIUM THE crud out of it, make it the best Complete Box Set Ever,
:tgrin:Episodes in Order and complete (yeah... beating a dead horse on this one)
:trazz:Consistent and well made packaging (simple art with each turtle/character in an action pose for each division in the set, with little pizzas with numbers on them)
:tlol: An episode guide with ... Maybe even just a compendium of old VHS Box art in the guide.... and maybe on the discs... (the art on those were pretty sweet)
:teek: only hope for extras beyond the ones on the dvd sets

Aside from skipping over 2 eps originally, the Lionsgate DVDs basically followed online episode guides.
Now that it's confirmed that the skipped eps will be included, I wouldn't doubt that Lionsgate will hang up their shells afterwards.

It would be neat to have a box set that put the episodes in order and had more bonus features, but as someone who already owns all the previous releases, once I own the last season (and thankfully they're including the missing episodes!), I'll have the entire series on dvd, so I probably won't be shelling out anymore money on box sets or anything.
However, it would be cool if they did release a box set of sorts so the people that haven't been keeping up with the previous releases can have a much easier way of getting the entire series on dvd.
