Here's a very funny review of the first movie by Outlaw Vern, a movie critic that did some write ups for Aintitcool back in the day. It's a very enjoyable read.

Warning: he did NOT enjoy the movie. So if you have trouble reading negative comments about it, I suggest to stay away.

Pretty much everything this guy says is dead-on, except for attacking the concept. (Which, okay, that's pretty fair as well, but it applies to so many genre stories and cultural mythos, it's just not worth mentioning.)
The first movie, much as I love it and as amazing it is that a comic-inspired Turtles movie was even produced at the time, is just the wrong blend of comedy and action. It's both difficult to laugh and take it as seriously as it asks.

Did this guy even really watch the movie?

One major problem, though: it’s about teenage mutant ninja turtles.
Let me ask you this. Why should this story be about turtles?
Why is it cooler for it to be a turtle than for it to be any of those other things?
Actually I’m a little creeped out by the turtles looking like muscular humans.
This must be Vernon Fenwick who wrote this.
I found this far more hilarious than serious to read anyways.

I find it hilarious, specially the part where he rants about the theme song.

This guy clearly doesn't give too sh*ts about the Ninja Turtles. He doesn't even bother to use their names. He just keeps saying "One of them".

That and all the crap he got wrong about the movie.

Oh Boy! An internet reviewer? That has over the top negative things to say about everything? What an original concept that has never been seen before!
Wait. Who cares.

To be fair, this reviewer seems to be looking at it as a stand-alone movie, to be judged relative to other movies. He isn't looking at it as a component of a franchise or an adaptation of a comic. And in that light, "Why are they Turtles (from a writing standpoint) and why should I care about their rat-dad?" is a perfectly legitimate question. And almost all his complaints are equally as legitimate in that light.
(And the wildly swinging tone, slapstick and constant one-liners are legitimate complaints even if you're viewing it as a franchise film.)
