Its always been a dream of mine to do a ninja turtle film, but getting a costume always seemed out of my reach. It wasnt till a forum member named something like Dextar show a foam made costume was an option. So i took a few notes from him and began work on my ninja turtle
http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/w412/goingnowhereshow/photo11.jpg
http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/w412/goingnowhereshow/photo21.jpg
This is the mechanism that makes the mask talk

Gum machine plastic containers for eyes
http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/w412/goingnowhereshow/photo4.jpg
http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/w412/goingnowhereshow/photo5.jpg
Began gluing foam peices to shape head.

The plan once the costume is complete is to make a few films. the first one is a ninja turtle themed episode for our show going nowhere - youtube.com/goingnowhereshow
then later make something fans will really enjoy, tho i dont wanna spoil that.
I will hopefuly update this daily :tgrin:

thanks.
so the head itself wont have eyebrows. the plan is to make interchangeable bandanas, each with their own expression to suit the turtle its supposed to be. ill do raphael first since thats the only turtle i need for the first film

You gotta give me some detail on building the under-structure so I can make one of these things.

The head was looking a little "iffy" until you put the bandana on. With the bandana, it looks absolutely fantastic!!

http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/w412/goingnowhereshow/photo1.jpg
this is the concept sketch of wats under the mask. The idea is the bottom lever has a chin strap. when u open ur mouth, it pull the bottom lever down. as u can see theres a metal bar by the back of the jaw that causes the upper lever to move up. attached to both levers is a spring in between to shut the mouth when i close it.
The bottom jaw is attached to the lower lever. The upper lip is attached to the upper lever, and right behind the upper lever is another lever that doesnt move at all. thats were the upper teeth are.
Thats probably the best i can explain the mechanism

cartoonistaaron
05-25-2012, 08:51 AM
Where'd you get the metal bars - did you fabricate them yourself? I think I could handle the foam part and assembling the metal, but as far as acquiring and shaping the metal, I'm at a loss.

goingnowhereshow
05-25-2012, 09:20 AM
well, i cant do that either, my dad is a plumber so he helped me do the physical labor of the mechanism. to keep it light, he made the levers out of pvc i think. the metal is aluminum so it can be bent how i needed and stay sturdy. The design is the most important thing, u can get creative with how u pull it off. it can be any material as long as it gets the job done (i think, :p).

Well, i started putting latex on it.
http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/w412/goingnowhereshow/photo1-1.jpg
http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/w412/goingnowhereshow/photo2.jpg
Total of 3 layers of latex
http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/w412/goingnowhereshow/photo3-2.jpg
While it dries, i started carving the upper body off of a big thick peice of upholstery foam.
http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/w412/goingnowhereshow/photo4-2.jpg
http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/w412/goingnowhereshow/photo5-2.jpg
This is were my costume making starts to differentiate from dextars version. First carved the inside that fits my body (using and electric carving knife), then carved the general shape of the outside. Then i would go over that with a nice pair of scissors to start getting detail. I do that to two peices then afterward ill glue them together with a good contact adhesive. I'll finish making the whole body before latexing it.

same foam. keeps the lightness despite its size, and makes u able to roll if u need to without worry of destroying it

Just wow! I wonder.. What are you using to put it together and how much movement do really have when you wear it?

Strong glue (contact adhesive). You just gotta hold down the glue for 30 minutes (helps to have extra hands).
Movement is decent. I can bring my arms up. Kicking is tough, but then again, even without the costume kicking is tough for me, so idk how to guage that. I currently have velcro on one side of the shell so i can open, get in and close it. Velcro isnt strong enough to hold when i crouch. So hopefully when i add some metal pop on buttons, itll help hold it together. :tconfuse:

Will do. probably not today. Got sick >.< atleast all the body parts are done now. I have my gf coating everything in latex. 3 layers on each part.
Its a very expensive project

Benboy23
05-30-2012, 04:14 PM
Yeah tell me about it. I have 2 layers all over mine! Not happy because for the effect I want it's gunna need at least 2 more, maybe 3!

Is yours not really hot with it being all foam? I've only used foam for the muscle detail, the rest is a lightweight undersuit

goingnowhereshow
05-31-2012, 06:00 AM
last time i wore it for about 10-15 minutes and i got a little sweaty. god help me if i ever decide to wear it at a convention. also im pretty blind in the suite. I cant wear glasses in the mask, so my vision sucks, and i dont own contacts. Also i chose not to make holes under the eyes, so i can only see thru the mouth when i open my mouth. So i'd probably need a hand in being walked around

Had to tie a rope in the middle for now since the velcro isnt strong enough to keep the shell on. Now i gotta give the suit to a guy that will airbrush it.
btw, i based the feet and hans on the CG TMNT movie. I liked the big feet and hands design, like mega-man, sonic, and alot of cartoons really...

Could you not add some eye holes? The bandana will give it a nice shadow and hide them pretty well...

By the way that looks awesome.

For the arms and other areas of skin, have you looked into using some method to smooth it out a little more? Like a Dremel tool or something? I carve puppets from foam and have yet to find a good way to smooth out large areas of foam, so I tend to end up covering it with fleece or something. Which wouldn't look quite right for your Turtle...

If you do decide later down the line that you want the body smoother you can simply 'skin' it if you just cover in thin packing foam. anything from 2-4mm will do the trick, takes off the roughness but keeps the definition in the muscle below :-)

Obviously it would mean latex and paint again, but if you ever want to touch this up later down the line it's a good idea. I like the way it looks now though :-)

Did you do the base paint of did you hire someone? What paint is it? I'm either using pax paint, 50-50 mix with prosaid and acrylic paint. I also have liquid latex mixed with a dark green pigment, both are flexible so shouldn't flake and will bend with the suit.

i think the guy has different paint hes using, from what i heard the dark aqua he'll be using is latex-ish, but yea, idk sh*t.
My dad gave me a tool that couldve smoothed it out, but i didnt have time for it, also i was afraid of using it cause if i wasnt super carefull, it could mess it up more. as far as doing it later, i probably wont, used up like 3-4 bottles of latex already, each one cost me $68, and airbrush will cost me $200.
I havent done the math, but this costume has cost me well over a grand to make >.<

btw, for the film, im in need of someone that can do a good imitation of raphael from the movies. I've been trying but havent found anyone. My impression is halfway there, but im too picky to settle on that. as im sure any ninja turtle fan might cringe if the voice isnt wat they expect.
Any chance any of u know someone that does a good raph voice?

goingnowhereshow

materials cost me $100 (tho i probably bought more leather than i needed) and even tho the girl working on it isnt asking for anything, im giving her 100 for labor anyways.
As for selling it, the thought crosses my mind, but if i did, it wouldnt be any time soon. It probably wouldnt sell for as much as it would be worth selling it tho.

well clearly we didnt make our deadline. Girls still doing the pads. So we pushed the film back to July 14. We've shot everything that doesnt require the turtle in the meantime to speed things up when the turtle is finally ready. As a nod to the 80's show, we're making the foot soldiers robots

two to three films. one will hopefully go online july 14. Itll be an episode of our show going nowhere youtube.com/goingnowhereshow that ends up with the main characters finding themselves in a foot soldier situation and raphael helps out.
Once we finish doing all episodes of season 2 of going nowhere, i plan to make an actual ninja turtle short film that will include all 4 turtles and a few surprises.
And there might be one video we do in between those two which is my little secret :tcool:

phew... just came from shooting the fight scene with the turtle. came out good but what a mess. all the paint that i restored on the shell got all chipped off again. the guy i put in the suit was more built than me, so the back tore, so thatll need some fixin, and man what a hastle keeping the shell were it needs to be while theyre doing all that action.
I feel like elliot and the turtle suit is E.T.
The more damage it takes the more i feel like a mess. Hopefully i can come up with some solutions while i repair it to make it better for action.
btw, guy in the turtle suit had to keep stopping during takes for high heart rate, or ready to throw up. I dont blame him, i was doing pretty bad at the supercon, and i was only walking around and posing.
Hopefully we just need one more day of shooting next week, and i can finally get this episode done.

From what I understand, the movie stunt suits didn't hold up all that well either... So a little wear and tear isn't unusual! Just be careful out in the heat - if you're in Florida, it's deadly out! I'm in FL myself and I can't do any kind of yard work after 9 AM or before 7 PM, otherwise it's heatstroke city!

we were filming after 8, but that didnt matter since i could almost swim in all that humidity. I was sweating with just a tshirt and pants on. when we removed the turtle suit from him, u could feel a wave of heat that was trapped inside

One Halloween, I went out as a Ninja Turtle with my wife (she was Batgirl). It was probably 80 degrees out and I swear I almost died of heat stroke. It's this Florida humidity! Be careful and have fun!

Your suit looks a sight more realistic than my plastic-and-green-shag-carpet model:

Hi, I followed this link from deviantart. LauraAlena said you're looking for someone who sounds like Raph from the Secret of the Ooze movie. I don't know this person, but he sounds like a good voice for Raph. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gf1_D3pzlGY "New York Accent: A New York Minute (Public Restrooms)"

Hope you find a voice actor! :)

You think you can pose behind the wheel of a motorcycle? How about rockin on an electric guitar?

sucks, i actually had a friend with me with a motorcycle when we filmed with the turtle costume. unfortunately he moved to a different city this week.
The next time we film with the costume i'll try to remember to have my friend bring his guitar

Well, i havent posted in a bit but heres the Hunger GameRs vid i mentiond https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7XmxnKyTh7c
We won the machinima film fest with it.

I also helped make this recent Ninja Turtles short following the news of megan fox.
Heres the link to the video without the extended ending
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ajfrM3OTCAI
If u dont mind a little shock and internet filth, heres the link to the uncut version with the "controversial" ending.
http://www.funnyordie.com/videos/73453730cc/ninja-turtles-interrogate-megan-fox

For the record i got nothing against megan fox, i liked her in jenifers body, also i still believe im going to like the new film. but i do think april is poorly cast as megan fox. :tcry:

ahh, sorry guys, not good at balancing the internet. as far as how i made the skeleton, i cant really explain it better than the way i explained it on page 1 of this thread. As far as the materials i used, i'd rather not say (but if u really wanna know pretty much PVC and aluminum) since if i could do it all over again, id switch it up and try to find something better, or a better version of what i used.
since i last posted i helped with a couple more turtle related vids

wish i could find more permanent paint. it rubs off so easily. not that it matters, i plan to move to california, & dont plan on taking it with me, so i'll probably end up selling it online, or possibly giving it away to a friend
