View Full Version : What will happen to the turtles?

Have you ever thought of the turtles' future? What will happen after nick finishes the tv show, and the movie? Will they keep it, adbandon it. Will it continue in comics,
or will the turtles become a marketing tool, and be sold to another net work. What would that mean for the idw comic?
Or is it some thing else.
What do you think?

I can see IDW continue to do the comics long after the show is canceled.

The surge in popularity the Turtles are receiving now lead me to believe that they'll be around for a good while. After the show gets cancelled, there will be another and another. The Turtles could possibly become as iconic as Batman or Superman. Only time will tell.

I dunno, Jester. The TMNT have come a long way since their humble beginings, and they've become quite a sensation over the last couple decades. I'm betting by the time we're all old geezers the Ninja Turtles will be just as iconically acclaimed as all the classic DC and Marvel characters.

Way too early to tell. We don't yet know how well this new show will be received, though I imagine it'll do well enough. Let alone how it'll progress, and how that progress will be received. We know pretty much nothing about the new movie atm, so it's even harder to predict how it'll be received, and any theoretical sequels.
If things go well, I would guess that the new Nick show will be around for a good while, and that eventually Nick will end it to do a new show set in the future of their first show. Showing the turtles aged a bit. Maybe even introducing a bit of a style change too.
Then if the new movie does well, that'll spawn at least two sequels, if not more if those do well. All the time helping increase the presence of the turtles on the modern market.
I imagine the comics will continue to some degree no matter how well the new show and movie do. Though I imagine the success of those two will help increase the turtle's comic presence too. Particularly with the inclusion of tie-in comics to the show and movie.
Though this is all theoretical. Things could develop rather differently. We'll just have to wait and see. No matter what, the turtles gaining more presence is a good thing, and I hope we don't see a break in things for quite a while.

Ninja Turtles is a hot topic logo right now and all of the hype for the new show is based on nostalgia. Its not an iconic name that is woven into WORLD culture like Superman, Batman and Spider-man.
You show a poor kid in Uganda a picture of Superman, he's gonna know who the hell that is.
Putting TMNT against the top DC and Marvel characters is a joke. They belong in the same class as Jem, He-man and Mighty Max. 'Oh right. That thing from when I was a kid.'
I know you all desperately need to justify your undying love for the franchise but let's not take a 10 spot and call it a million.

I can agree with this...Jem is a bit of a low blow, but He-Man, the 80's GI Joe, and Transformers aren't far off. They are great and experience some longevity, but they are nothing when compared to the modern mythology created by Marvel and DC.

We're talking about American pop culture.
I think most people from around 18-35 are at least aware of what the Ninja Turtles are. Not only is this the age range of all the original kids from the 80's and 90's, but all this new exposure is going to introduce more new generations to the franchise.
Same way most people know who Batman is, yet they can't tell you if there is more than one Robin or who all his villains are besides Joker, Catwoman, etc.

People being aware of it doesn't mean its a still popular and culturally relevant franchise.
I love how you have to eliminate something to try and make your argument work. Some dude brought up TMNT being as iconic as those other characters and you don't become truly iconic until you've made an impact globally. You can ask pretty much anybody in the US for Superman/Batman/spider-man's origin and they'll know it beat for beat. TMNT is not even in the same galaxy as those characters. Sorry.
Sure not everyone knows every stupid detail of the Batman comics but that's better than just remembering the names and how they look on an ironic-cool t-shirt.
Doesn't matter what pop culture we're talking about. Theres no spot anywhere where TMNT can be put in that class. Again, 80s relics. I doubt the new show will do anything to stop that.

Cubed, more people around the world know who Batman is. Fewer people know about the Turtles. Sure we love the Turtles, and sure they are popular, to a point, but they are nowhere near as popular as the likes of Spidey, Bats, Supes, or Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny. There are levels of pop culture, and the Turtles just aren't on that level.

Spider-Man debuted in 1962. TMNT today can be considered like what Spider-Man was in 1990, what Superman (debuted 1938) was in 1966 or Batman (debuted 1939) was in 1967.

Haven you read a lick of what Stryker posted? TMNT isnt in the same leauge as Spider-Man. It will never be as revered.
And the 90s were a TERRIBLE time for Spider-Man. Don't fool yourself. The (overrated) cartoon and the toyline barely diguised a turbulent period in Spidey's comics history, a period the franchise has NEVER recovered from in terms of quality. The only good thing that happened to Spidey where the comics are concerned in the 90s was Spider-Girl.
The 4kids cartoon also lasted LONGER than the 90s Spider-Man cartoon, yet if you asked people which one they'd remember, they'd pick the 90s Spidey 'toon.

i have to agree with Jester on this. the Turtles are just not as memorable as Superman and Batman. Ask a kid who Superman is or Batman, they'll know and favor it. Ask them about the Turtles, they won't know much. Same goes for asking an older person. The point is... people from all generations and ages know who these icons are. The Turtles... not so much. Every kid wants to be a superman... or batman. not that many want to be a ninja turtle. every major store has a supes or bats merchandise... not that many turtles stuff. they're nowhere near that level.

Honestly, I'm not worried about what will happen to the Turtles right now. I'm just happy that Nick is bringing them back.
I agree with Jester and Stryker about the popularity of TMNT. Yes, there are those of us who know about them, but there are others who aren't as familiar with them as Batman and Superman. And even though the Turtles were a comic before the cartoon came out, not many people are aware of that. If you even mention TMNT to anyone, they'll just say, "Oh, yeah, I used to watch that when I was a kid." They won't even acknowledge the comics because those aren't well-known. Heck, I didn't even know about the comics until the 4Kids series came out.

I'd put the TMNT around X-Men/The Incredible Hulk level, maybe just a little below in terms of "superhero franchises", and a little above Wonder Woman level. Star Wars/Star Trek level is also out of reach as well. In terms of classic cartoons, TMNT is around Scooby Doo/Rocky and Bullwinkle level. Well known by people who grew up with them with some younger fans and some longeivity, but not quite at that "first tier" status. It's definitely above Popeye/Woody Woodpecker though which has really gradually faded in popularity. Still, the Nick generation is important for the future of this franchise; its important we have some compelling new mysteries/adventures that really are entertaining and fun rather than revisit the same tired old horizons.

Noone has the time to invest in such a timeframe. Results should be more immediate than that. It didnt take Spider-Man the end of the 60s, the decade of his creation, before he had a cartoon and was established as THE go-to-guy fro Marvel. The TMNT are recognized the world over as a passing fad/brand that gets kicking every few years, but utlimately doesnt have the staying power to maintain a global interest. In 30-50 years, it will have the same level of fans, and by that point we'll be trying, and failing, to get our grandchildren interested in it long-term. They'll switch off after a year, maybe two.
Another thing that makes cultural icons interesting is their mythology. Spider-Man is perhaps the greatest cautionary tale in the history of comics folklore, what do the Turtles have? "Oh, someone killed our sensei's owner, let's retaliate and kill him in cold blood...HI KIDS, STAY IN SCHOOL". The mythology's been tweeked many times to make the Turtles a bit more lovable than something bloodthirsty redneck chavs would find endearing, but overall there generic action heroes, they don't have a really meaty modus operandi, they fight crime and get caught up in stuff "Daredevil" was doing years before them, that's it. No big moral lesson to learn here kiddies, no real hook for any of the characters, no investment. Just eat your cereal and shaddap.
If I had to pick any version of the TMNT as cultural icons, it would be the FW Turtles, who are wholesome, fun loving, and live life with continuous optimisum...but those Turtles were a lifetime ago, and outside of one reunion movie, havent resonated across generations. For the Turtles to become icons, a version has to endure across endless spectrums, but in this day and age of reboots and reimaginings, such a thing is impossible for it.

Why does just one version need to resonate across generations? Superman, batman, spiderman and the likes are getting reboots every time you turn around and are changing everything about the charactors.
Fact is no one can say for sure if they will be around in 50 years. No one can say if superman will be around in 50 years they way he is today either. The facted that tmnt has been around for what 28 years now shows they have staying power. They have carried across 4 gens of kids now. Batman: TAS is the definitive mythology for Batman, with most of the comics output taking pointers and characters from it, where as Richard Donner's Superman fuelled most of the Superman comics over the last decade or so.
Spider-Man may have had a continuity hiccup thanks to that stupid deal with the devil, but Marvel for the most part have said "everything since the 60s still happened, only the marraige and MJ's pregnancy didnt happen", so fans can rest a little easy there knowing most of the original history is still intact. Frankly, I think the best continuity for Spider-Man is the MC2 Universe, where the marraige and pregnancy (as well as all the big deaths in the 80s and 90s) are still valid, and the mythology is furthered by Peter and MJ's daughter being allowed to grow and evolve.

The difference is DC and Marvel are huge companies (especially now that Marvel is also owned by Disney), that have millions to spend to keep Batman, Superman, Spiderman, etc. relevant for decades.
TMNT was owned by an obscure company who was primarily interested in comics and just licensed the franchise out to Fred Wolf and 4kids to make cartoons out of.
Now that TMNT is owned by Nick, it has the potential to be much bigger.

As Zarius said, Spider-man and Superman were cultural icons within a 4 year span of their debuts. The big company help didn't come until way later.

There wasn't much competition back in the 40's and 60's though, were there? Superheroes were a brand new thing at the time, not commonplace like they are now.
The only other big animation shows at the time were Mickey Mouse, Bugs Bunny, Tom and Jerry, Popeye and all those other classic cartoons.
Its no surprise that all the superheroes who basically debuted at the dawn of comics and animation became the most popular.

how do you know that new audience will abandon it after a year or two? 4 years ago, i talked to a friend of mine about TMNT. He didnt know anything about them until then. Then, i gave him the 2003 series to see and he liked it so much that i decided to give him the 1987 series too that he is curently watching . He is also looking forward to the Nick show. see? This man became a very big tmnt fan thanks to me . Now he knows evrything about TMNT, and no one can imagine that 4 years ago he didnt know anything about them! Months ago i watched some episodes of tmnt with my girlfriend (she also didnt know anything about tmnt) and she didnt like it at all and even told me that she dont want to watch more episodes anymore. What the hell? Nick purchased the entire TMNT IP for $60 million. Why the hell do you think they own the entire franchise for? You really think they're going to make 1 season and cancel it when its their OWN SERIES?
What part of Nick owns TMNT 100% do you not understand? Its their own flagship series now, they already said they want the new show to be as big as Spongebob was.
I really don't understand what you're thinking. Nick is going to give the series star treatment on Nickleodeon because they paid $60 million for the franchise. How the hell do you expect them to make back that $60 million investment from 1 season?
Most likely they'll keep the show airing for quite a number of years, the mere fact that it'll air on Nickelodeon assures that it will get better ratings than the 4kids show did...and that lasted 7 seasons.

I'd say Batman would edge out TMNT just a bit. But the TMNT exploded with the Fred Wolfe series, and I doubt they'll ever be that big again. They WERE a global phenomenon, but that same explosion was their downfall. To most people it was a fad, just a phase. I love TMNT to death, but it won't ever be as big as Spider-man, Batman or Superman (they're around Hellboy level popularity I would say, lower than Transformers but higher than Jem). In Many ways that's better for the TMNT, which to be honest is pretty damn niche, even for comic books. Just be glad with what you have now. I'm enjoying IDW's take on the TMNT, way more than volume 4 which looking back just kinda shows how disconnected Laird got from the TMNT and it's fans.
What would happen to the turtles once the Nick show ends? I dunno, but IDW will continue making comics as long as people keep buying. Then depending if there is an interested party to bring em back then they will.

The IDW books are utter thrash. I loved Volume Four, and felt Peter was being attacked unfairly by the virgins upset with the changes he was making. Yeah it was decompressed, but Brian Michale Bendis was making a fortune off of that style at Marvel.
For some reason, fans chose to make Laird a target of their ire far more than Eastman, who gets a lot more respect and admiration. I don't understand it, Laird kept the TMNT brand name alive and was a driving force behind the 4Kids cartoon, and the treatment he got from the fans was shameful.
That line about Laird being "disconnected" from TMNT and the fans is your average entitled elitist horses*it by the way.
Yea right if you would have asked any kid in the late 80's early 90's who they liked better. Batman, superman, spiderman or tmnt I bet most would say tmnt
Keep dreaming ya deluded muppet.

What?... I believe that they already are.:)
The Turtles are nowhere as big as Batman or Superman. Sure they may have some staying power, but Batman and Superman have been around since the 40's. They are cultural icons. The Turtles are just a fad by comparison.
Agreed they are were more of an 80's/90's fad, but with Peter Laird keeping the turtles alive with with he 4kids show and then eventually selling the them to Nick for the good of the fandom, (and Im sure he was tired)
The surge in popularity the Turtles are receiving now lead me to believe that they'll be around for a good while. After the show gets cancelled, there will be another and another. The Turtles could possibly become as iconic as Batman or Superman. Only time will tell.
Lets hope so, I think we are seeing the turtles being turned from a fad into a actual iconic super-heroes. But lets hope Nick gets the job done

He-man failed, Thundercats will probably get canceled soon, and I doubt the new Voltron will do any good.

Hahaha. More horses*it. Reboots of Transformers and My Little Pony generate far more bucks and fans than any incarnation of the TMNT since the 80s ever could.

Yes I have and I don't really care for them but it doesn't change what I said at all.
I'd take the worst Simpsons episode over anything Ninja Turtle related thing released in the past 10 years. Just sayin.

Well that's your problem man and I thought Turtles Forever was fine.
It's just when you compare the worst of the worst of Simpsons it doesn't come close to the level of bad that the worst TMNT has created.
I wasn't even really speaking about the quality of the show in the beginning. How the hell did I get roped into this?

Have you been reading the IDW comics? They are really good. Issue #10 was just released and is the best so far. TMNT is a household name and it is just because they have put out some poor stuff in the past does not mean it does not have the potential to be great. It has made a cultural impact and is comparable to Superman, Spider-Man and Batman.

I dunno, Jester. The TMNT have come a long way since their humble beginings, and they've become quite a sensation over the last couple decades. I'm betting by the time we're all old geezers the Ninja Turtles will be just as iconically acclaimed as all the classic DC and Marvel characters.
I agree with Jephael, but you cannot compare them now since the Turtles have only been around for 30 years, and the other classic DC and Marvel characters have been around for decades. Time will tell.

The Turtles have become a great franchise and you are right, another company will license them after Nick and IDW are done with them.

No...no it won't. In 30 years time Batman, Superman, Spider-man and the others will also be 30 years older with 30 more years of fans introducing their children and grandchildren to those franchises as well. It's not really a time thing. Those characters made a connection in the public consciousness that the Turtles will never make. They won't be as big as Batman, Bugs Bunny, Kermit the Frog, or Mickey Mouse...ever.
I still don't know how Power Ranges has had more staying power though.

Then again, just because it has stayed around since its inception doesn't mean its popularity hasn't ebbed and flowed.

Nope, it's been going on in some fashion or another since 1993. Longest it's been off the air was the 5 1/2 months between the final ABC broadcast and the first Nickelodeon broadcast.
Though, it wasn't in production during 2010 (they just aired "special" reruns of Mighty Morphin during that year while the transfer was going on behind the scenes).

What do I expect will happen to the turtles?
I’m expecting (now as we have been told that the alien origin doesn’t really mean they’re aliens) that the movie will do well, but critics will give it “rotten” reviews like they did with the Transformers films. Overall turtle fans may enjoy it, but however, will not surpass the classic 1990 film. A few sequels will be released, and one could potentially flop causing the movie franchise to take a hiatus or something. Who knows?
The Nick cartoon will probably do very well. In fact, I’m confident it will do very well, based on what we know so far. We need something besides Spongebob Squarepants for a change. The contract is supposed to end by 2015, so that means they will probably have 3 seasons. Yet, it’s possible for a contract renewal. So, who knows? I’m hoping we get a good 5 or 7 seasons. It’s possible, but let’s keep our fingers crossed.:thyper:
Overall, I think this will not really be the time where the turtles become as big as DC or Marvel superheroes. However, it can be the time where TMNT becomes big as Transformers and G.I. Joe, and it could get its own comic con. We’ll just have to wait and see.:tsmile:

Since Nick owns the Turtles 100%, its obvious the show will be kept on as long as possible. Simply by airing on Nickelodeon by default it will get good ratings.

While it was popular among the fans, TMNT was still a minor show of the 2000s (sadly), compared to the 1987 show. One person's opinion doesn't say much of how popular a show was.

The contract may be up, but that only means how long this series will air. That doesn't mean they'll be giving up TMNT. It's possible that they'll do something else like Cartoon Network would do with DC superheroes like Batman. Still, with TMNT, I bet the contract may get renewed for more seasons. Don't worry.:twink:
