Really? We have to click a link? Even though I like your site, that's pretty crappy. Just because of the blatant self advertising, I'll wait until it's actually posted on the boards.

I'll help...I'll help!
Consider it Free Comic Book Day Part 2. This year on Halloween, Diamond and select comics publishers will be distributing free, specially designed comic books. For the past few years, a small selection of mini comics have been distributed on Halloween, but this is the first year that a larger selection of regular-sized comics will be made available.
For this year's inaugural event, IDW is making available a special Halloween variant of last year's TMNT #1 issue. It seems that the only difference this book has is an orangish-colored cover.
Make sure to ask your local comic shop to get it for you!

Thanks, Jester. Normally I would have quoted the text, but I'm trying to get out the door for work. Running late as it is.

Hey man, please don't come down on Roseangleo or any of us that also have TMNT-related sites and blogs...I know it may seem like self-promoting but that's not how it is...
A little perspective for you...we all have limited time and we do our best to stay on top of the latest TMNT-related news and info. for the entire TMNT community. While posting a link may seem like self-promotion I'd say that our objectives are genuine by doing so. First, with limited time (jobs, kids, etc.), we don't always have the time to re-post the same information again here but we want you to know as soon as possible. Second, linking has the benefit of providing a single place for the information to be updated. If we re-post the same information here but then need to amend it later we have to amend it twice (and remember to do so).
I'd say if we weren't established members of this TMNT community and were just spamming you with links to get hits on our sites then, yes, you would be warranted in your criticism. However, this isn't the case and I'd say that the information Roseangelo provides is top-notch. I personally have nothing to gain by you clicking a link to my site. I don't make ANY money from my site as it's all just for my love of TMNT comic books. We're simply trying to provide you information that we think you might want to know. I know I want to know it.
Thanks Roseangelo. :)

Of course, I knew when I posted that, I wouldn't have anyone agree with me, since I 'bashed' a respected member here. But I stand by it.

If she did it frequently then there'd be a reason, but usually she posts the text. She was just rushed this time, is all.

I'm sick of that cover at this point. It's not even that great compared to Eastman's other covers since.
...but I'll still get it.

They should have made issue 5 or 10 the free comic, because issue 1 isn't really that good a a standalone comic without 2/3/4 next to it. I remember people being unsure of the IDW series at first because issue 1 doesn't cover much but once that first arc was completed we were able to get into it.

Anyway to make sure my Local Comic book shop will get this? Mine is pretty stingy with turtles stuff... When the first micro came around I walked in to the shop expecting it and they were all like, oh you wanted that? I had actually specifically told them prior I did... Sigh...

Neato, free is always good. I like how the orange contrasts with their green skin, really makes it pop.

Neat as this is, I'll only pick it up if something else I buy is out that day. I bet Ghostbusters puts a book out that day though.

Well, my comic shop had these today but wouldn't give me one before Halloween. They said they'd hold two of them for me, so I really don't know why it'd make a difference as to when they give them to me. :trazz:

Hey Roseangelo, sorry you weren't able to get this today. :( I have actually heard from a ton of people today that said their shop wouldn't give them out today. I can see them making normal comic buyers wait until Halloween but they know you're a Turtles fan...I don't get that. Especially if they are putting them in your hold slot to just sit for a month. Kinda lame if you ask me.
However, I'm not overly surprised by this since these are designed to be "free" for purposes of marketing Halloween Comic Fest (since Halloween falls on a new comic Wed. this year). Since the retailers have to shell out about 50 cents/copy for these, it sometimes lends itself to a power trip of sorts. "I paid for it and so if you want it you'll get it when I say so." Either that or there was some sort of note with these that said "Don't distribute until HCF" or something...but I doubt it since the release date was today for this and that was widely communicated.
Anyway, I'll share with you how I handle these types of "free" comics with my LCS in case it helps you (or anyone else) in the future. The secret is to treat these freebies just as any other normal comic. I actually go in and ask them to pre-order me a set number of copies when solicitations are out (in this case, back in July when IDW September solicitations were out). This way it's not left up to chance whether they decide to order them or not. Plus, you can order as many as you want this way instead of just getting the one copy they give out (which is almost always the limit you can get with free comics). Most importantly, I always insist to pay the costs for them at the time of ordering. It only costs a few bucks total but it helps to establish trust. Plus, this way they know they won't get burned by ordering something for someone they might not know that well. This process has always worked for me on the freebies (even the TMNT #1 Free Comic Book Day edition).
Of course, it's also important that your LCS owner is cool and not a total a**...I've had my share of run-ins with some very rude and unpleasant owners and there's just nothing that will work for those dudes. I just don't choose to ever do business with them...and they are the shops that always end up going out of business before too long.

My LCS is pretty cool. They specifically buy at least 10 copies of each turtle book so I can get my variant. They sell most of their books, but I felt kind of bad about the Casey and April Micro variants, cause they still have a ton on the shelf. But so far I have gotten every variant from this 1 shop and they know me the second I walk in the door, and have my pull ready for checkout while I look over the other books that I might have missed out on.
As far as the Halloween issue is concerned, I asked them 1 week in advance if they were getting it and they said they would hold 1 for me. Picked it up last week, no questions asked. I think the key is to get to know the employees, and they will treat your right once you have established a relationship with the store. I probably drop an average of $40/week at that store, and they treat me well in return. Its a good shop. If you are in the St. Louis area I highly recommend Star Clipper for your comics. Shameless plug I know, but as you can see they kind of deserve my loyalty...

I've been super busy and haven't been in my LCS for about 2 months; went in on Saturday to grab the issues I was behind on. As I was looking for 12 and 13 in the many boxes of recent back issues yet to be shelved in their appropriate places I stumbled upon the Halloween printing, which I hadn't even heard of at that point! I asked the guy who was working there what it was and he was like "oh, oops, that shouldn't have been there, but I can't give it to you yet, come back on Halloween and maybe you can get one." I was so bummed! But I actually thought it was a special one-off issue for halloween, so I'm kind of happy now that I've found out it's just a reprint of issue 1 with a slight variant for the cover! But still, to initially have it in my hands and have him snatch it away before I had a chance to really check it out was the worst!!
