View Full Version : What do you think is the worst thing in TMNT history?

TMNT is one of the greatest things out there, but some of the stuff made has not been so good (cough we wish you a turtles christmas cough)
So anyway, what do YOU think is the worst thing that has come out of TMNT is? it can be anything! a show, a movie, a character, a voice actor, a piece of merchandise, anything! So tell me what you guys think!

I haven't actually watched it, yet, but out of everything TMNT related that I'm aware of at the moment, I would have to say that the worst thing in it's history so far has been the Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation live-action series. Though the multitude of TMNT PSA's are a close second.

Though who knows, there might be something TMNT out there that I'm not yet aware of. I haven't been actively involved with anything ninja turtle related since the early 2000's, and even considering that, I wasn't aware of NT:TNM till last year...

Leo lost an arm,Raph's face is scarred,Don died and was resurrected as a cyborg. I am lucky in that my favorite did not get severely hurt. Its nothing for me. I don't like to see the turtles be battle damaged like that it. Its disrespectful in my opinion. Image is too far off from the turtles I like. You have your likes while I have mine. I don't even know why your commenting on my post since we are as far apart in our preferences as we can be. I hate Image and Venus. Tried them and did not like them so I ignore them.

Because people love to hop on the bandwagon, hate campaigns included.

What I like least may be portions of Mirages guest era, as well as that of the Archie series (specials & such).

The clear answer is the Coming Out of Their Shells Tour. Next Mutation was bad, but so was Power Rangers so it kinda was handcuffed by that. TMNT3 was actually ok and I loved the maimed Image Turtles, especially when it was written out of canon. Seeing something deviate so drastically in a series is fun and sometimes necessary. That's part of the reason I'm digging the new IDW comic so much.

Well, I at least liked those Turtle costumes. They'd be the ultimate Halloween get-up. Although I still can't figure out why they mixed up Don and Mikey's body pieces. Also, FW voice cast was pretty cool in goofy live-action.

I think the point I started realizing it was when Splinter died, but on reflection none of it was ever really good.

Peter never really had any direction, he was writing the whole thing as himself more so than as any particular character, and especially in the second half of the series... absolutely horrible writing. And then there's the April issue, which is just a train wreck of horribleness.

I haven't read every issue yet, but I think you've got a point. I think the art pretty strong up until they started to go with "digital" inking (around issue #7, perhaps?). It lost a lot of atmosphere. And the Super Turtles excursion was the point where I thought Laird started to lose his focus on the story. Up until then, you had lots of little hints of this big epic story that you hoped would deliver a satisfying payoff for long time readers. The Splinter funeral issue was both heartfelt and interesting because of all the cameo characters (even Leatherhead for some reason I can't remember).

But once Laird started to bring in the vampires, storylines just got progressively weirder and seemingly more pointless. We had a few issues of Gamera Raph running around the city and fighting other characters, Donatello having microscopic adventures, Mikey getting uh... "intimate" with an alien princess, and April's storyline just collapsing into increasingly unbelievable twists (even for a book with "Mutant Ninja Turtles" as title characters). Pretty much the only interesting storyline late into the book's run was Leonardo and his adventures. Mikey's space travels did start to get interesting as well, but we never did get to see how that wrapped up.

Valid point. If you're gonna reveal a bizarre twist on the origin of a long-time character, you might as well try to flesh out fully the ramifications.

Andrew NDB
06-18-2012, 11:41 PM
Which is kind of the problem with Volume 4 (and 2 for that matter) in general. It kind of feels like it's less "I have a plan for a beginning, middle, and end for this volume and everyone's arcs in it" and more "Ehhh... lemme just write one issue at a time and see where things go. Who knows what'll happen?" which isn't a particularly good storytelling style or practice.

But I'm still fascinated to see where he would have/will go regardless.

Movie 3 for me because, I never read the Image series, never saw the Turtles Christmas or the Coming out of their Shells stuff, and I liked TNM (even though I can't remember it or what I liked about it other than Venus' magic stuff and Venus as a whole).

I disliked movie 3 when I first saw it as a kid for many reasons and to me, it didn't feel like a Turtles film. It's like they tossed the four in to remind us that, "Hey, this is a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie." They had so many villains they could've used for that film, but were overlooked. Shredder's "death" in movie 2 was anticlimactic. HE CAN GET CRUSHED IN A GARBAGE TRUCK IN MOVIE 1 AND SURVIVE, BUT HE GOES KEVIN NASH AND A DOCK FALLS ON HIM AND IT KILLS HIM? Something is completely off there. If anything, the film to me was a huge disappointment. So no, I'm not one of those who "jumped on the bandwagon". I even tried giving the movie another chance last year after so many years of not seeing it and to be fair and objective about it. I still felt the same way for the most part and even ignored the bad animatronics...the movie was still very weak and still one of the worst things to come out of the franchise for me.

Edit: Oh god, the European vacation eps. So awful!! >< IMO, but I still stand by movie 3 as the worst thing to come out of the franchise for me. lol

The p eople who hate on it are just those with a very strong impaitence and low tolerance for decompressed storytelling, a lack of imagination, a fear of change, and overall they just wanted to bash Pete for any reason because they COULD, they were spoiled brats who didnt get what THEY wanted.

The European Vacation episodes...

I liked those for the most part. I did not like Northern Lights Out! but Shredder's New Sword and Ring of Fire were great among them.

In reference to April as a drawing Peter told me once that two things bothered him the most during his tenure alone at the helm. One was Shredder as an utrom convict and the other was April revealed to being an inked drawing. The Chr'ell twist grew on him while the April drawing bit he disliked more and more as time went on. The latter so much so he likes to think of Robyn as the older sister to block out the idea that the older April was a child drawing to a childless couple.

Revive interest in the show? What the hell? The show was only in its second season when Utrom Shredder was revealed and it was something that was planned from the beginning.

The Fast Forward revamp was when they were trying to boost ratings/toy sales for the show.

I'm not totally opposed to Vol. 4, there's some interesting ideas in it, but I didn't think there was much payoff for the fan base.

And for a comic that's survival was dependent on the fans, I think we/they are entitled to some degree of fan service.

The Next Mutation was just boring to me. I just couldn't get into it. I didn't see it back when it was on Fox Kids, so I streamed it on Netflix. I only made it up to the 15th episode before I decided to call it quits.

Ninjara is the same problem of all "added" sidekicks after April/Casey, they kind of feel shoe-horned in after awhile.

I don't mind the Turtles having recurring friends, but if they start to get added to the main cast much in the same way Carter was in the last two seasons, it just feels odd and forced.

It was a compelling plot twist... with no compelling follow-through. I see no evidence in the latter part of Vol. 4 that there was ever any kind of real long-term plan for it.This is my most prominent misgiving with Volume 4. I love, love most of its ideas. But the execution is majorly lacking. There's no follow-through, and I've become increasingly convinced over the years that Laird never actually knew where he was going.

And then there's the dialogue, which, the less said about ... the more opposite it would be to anything that happened in Volume 4.

Anyway, I was tempted to come in here and say The Next Mutation, which I believe is still the most incompetent run of fiction to ever involve the Turtles.

But my honest answer? Years of mismanagement with the franchise.

It's a toss up between We Wish You A Turtle Christmas and April's vol.4 origin. WWYATC is really hard to watch, almost as hard to watch as the Star Wars Holiday Special. And April's vol.4 origin actually angers me I dislike it so much. I'm all for change and shaking things up, but this felt too unnescesarily coincidental that the crystal that Kirby used to draw things to life was the same crystal that created April, who would go on to befriend mutant turtles and a mutant rat.

Tough call really. There's been some pretty horrible stuff. Things that make me embarrassed to say I'm a fan. I'd have to go with Turtles 3 though. Of all the bad things it's the most well known. I get some people like it for whatever reason but the film has no redeeming qualities to me. It's almost clear from the second you see the turtles that no one involved gave a crap. Sure they might have cared at first but as time went on with the lazy performances, bad script, and horrid special effects you can tell even the actors themselves didn't want to be there.

Just to test out I showed a group of friends who don't know my opinion on the films Turtles 2 and then right after 3. They laughed their way through 2 but 10 minutes into 3 they asked me to turn it off. Their reaction was basically "Wtf is this crap?" Which happened about 5 seconds after that horrid Splinter puppet comes out. I worshiped the turtles as a kid and even then as a young child I hated 3. That really tells me something. The experience of seeing it in the theater pissed me off so bad I've literary blocked out most of the film from memory. Any time I've attempted to watch it again I don't get very far.

At least they used the then state-of-the-art Windows 3.1 for some of the effects, but considering how much in the spotlight Turtles III received, it really spread how much of a failure that movie was, and started to turn more and more people against TMNT. Turtle Tunes and Turtle Christmas came out at a time when fewer people cared about the Turtles, feeling that Power Rangers was far superior. Still, at least TMNT brought the attention of the turtles traveling to ancient Japan to the masses, as it was recently introduced in #46 and #47, and spawned the Legend of Koji episode. Season 9 of the OT and most of Fast Forward and parts of Back to the Sewer are dishonorable mentions as well, really killing those shows. Turtle Tunes I'd say is the absolute worst though: the singing is so bad, but not quite bad enough that you can't really make a joke about it.

As for April's Vol. 4 origin, I think the writers were trying to make a joke that IT'S ONLY A CARTOON!

The setting either, for that matter. The idea of the Turtles going to ancient Japan was actually a neat idea. The problem is that, though a good premise, the execution was bad. Even if they couldn't use Krang and the others, it would've been nice if the movie played like it did in the Turtles in Time game...maybe, and if they are going to be in Japan, why did they make them samurai as opposed to ninja? Okay, I can overlook that, but the movie was still awful compared to the other two.

Like I mentioned before, movie 3 felt like a movie about Japan and they tossed the turtles in to remind us that it was their movie. It's like that horrible Dragon Ball Evolution movie. They tossed in Dragon Balls to remind us that it was supposed to have been a Dragon Ball movie. It would've worked better as a plain old fighting movie (and ditch the Dragon Ball stuff), but I went in with no expectations. I had many expectations for Turtles III.

My only problem with Fast Forward was how they aired it before the fifth season. Who the hell does that? I remember how I'd just tape the episodes and save them to watch later for whenever I'd get a chance to see the fifth season. I got to see the fifth season somewhere before it actually aired on TV here in the US. After that I got the DVDs since they were already out by then.

I remember when my interest in Ninja Turtles lost to Power Rangers. The last time I watched an episode when it was on TV was during its seventh season. Before that though, I saw TMNT III in theaters, and got Turtles in Time for the SNES. My interest was renewed when the 2K3 series started, and kept up with it. I found myself buying the DVDs, the video games, and also bought the DVDs for the 80s series and the first two movies.

Character-wise, it's a toss-up between April in Vol. 4, Karai's bizarre characterization ("I slept with Casey Jones, because..., why?" and, later, "I kidnap babies in the FUTURA!") and the Rat King's "origin." In terms of the latter, it answered a question no one asked.

El Goonish Shive did a good job going there, so go read:

http://www.egscomics.com/?date=2010-04-26

Or for more heinous things, the Mutanimals being killed off, because their animated series didn't materalize. We had Terracide, which is great, but was it worth all the bloodshed? Do what most writers do -- let your characters languish in obscurity. Beats killing them off viciously.

In terms of writing, TMNT Adventures' heavy-handed politics in certain matters for me. Some issues, I no longer re-read (such as issue #40), because I don't want my intelligence insulted. Plus, life is too short.

Regardless, it's all a subjective standard, and what may be the worst thing evah to one, may be a minor irritation to another.

The good thing is the core cast and major villains are usually good.

Would this count?:

I thought the worst thing in TMNT history was when news hit of a blu-ray special edition pack of all 4 movies to be released in a box set in the U.S.

Then it comes out, I didn't get the special features I wanted like the deleted scenes of the first live action movie.

AND I ESPECIALLY KNOW THERE WERE DELETED SCENES WHEN GERMANY GOT THE SPECIAL EDITION DVD!

But yes, I believe the worst thing was that Blu-Ray pack, promising special features when it was just those movies put in Blu-Ray format to suck out our money.

THAT is the single worst thing to happen in TMNT. April is a drawing created by one of the "Kirby Crystals"? What was Laird thinking?

Doubtful that it will get retconned, because the continuation of the Mirage continuity lies in the hands of Laird, and I doubt he will be continuing it. And I seriously doubt he will make an announcement on his blog like
"Hey guys, remember when I said that April was a drawing come to life in vol. 4? Well, just kidding! Savanti Romero cast a spell on her that caused her to have a horrible nightmare where she became a bug with Renet and saw how she was drawn to life, only so he could mess with her mind and make her vulnerable to the alien Brontosaurus invasion that he was planning."

Anyway, as much as I dislike most of vol. 4, I almost think of it as non-canon, cause not only does it help me sleep at night, but I personally think Peter was off his rocker while writing it. Pete wants to ignore vol. 3 and say it's non-canon, then I will ignore vol. 4 and say it's non-canon.

For me, the worst decisions in TMNT has to be April's drawing background (which many have said already) and Venus (sorry to Venus fans).

Kirby had his moment with Don and April had other things to work out. Thus, I really felt like April's whole "I am just a picture" background was really unnecessary characterization-wise. There was so many other ways to work on her character without dealing with her parents at all.

Venus did not bother me because of the "there is no need for a fifth turtle" argument/rant that most V-haters go through. I dislike Venus because they didn't develop her and it was waste of a character. Venus honestly had potential. I just feel that they made her and some how did not have a plan for her when they did.

Her background was ridiculously round-about even by TMNT standards. Her only speciality was " dream magic" and understanding "magic", neither which were used in a productive way (my magic senses tell me that there is something in the darkness...while martial arts training, if I had it, could have told me the same thing). She got through the first episode and her place in the plot was lost afterwards. She didn't really contribute anything and just didn't need to be there anymore once she explained the whole dream situation.

I felt that a new female character (turtle or no turtle) could have been cool, but they totally trashed it! I admit that I still a little sore about it.

I'm going to say Venus DeMilo. I think they could have had April be their female sidekick again and it would have been fine. Or Mona Lisa, or some other female mutant. Shoehorning in a 5th female turtle was such a blatant attempt at trying to make TMNT like Power Rangers by making sure there was at least one girl on the team, that as neat as the character might have become later it will seem lame to me. I've never gotten more than ten minutes into the first episode, so I don't know. The Venus idea kind of makes me want to avoid the series.

Coming Out of Their Shells is a close second. Even when I was a kid I didn't bother watching it a second time. As an adult there are a few parts that are "so bad they're good", which is why Venus took the title of worst of the worst for me.

TMNT III wasn't very good, but it was far from the worst thing about TMNT. There are even many, many movies that are far worse.

*The Coming out of their SHell Tours and the making of the coming out of their shells tour- both made me a bit sick.

Since we're talking recent Mirage, I'm surprised no one cited the Brain Thief. I don't hate it, yet I can see why people don't care for it.

As for Venus, I haven't seen enough to comment beyond "I'm fine with her general existence and using magic, but not so much of injecting her into the origin, via a retcon." I didn't care for it when Fred Wolf went there with Mondo Gecko, so I wouldn't care for the redux.

For a slight shift in topic, we could discuss how some concepts that received major backlash at the time, but we eventually loved them or at least, accepted them (depending on who you ask). Ch'rell, anyone? (Again, depending on who you ask.)

It was overpriced and didn't deliver on its intriguing premise (mostly because it was stuck into the very tightly paced Volume 2 plotline for some reason), but there's no way it's one of the worst things in the history of TMNT, or even one of the worst stories. It's just kind of mediocre and disappointing.

The fanbase really railed against it when it first aired, but I'll attribute a lot of that to the fact it interrupted the continuous plotline of seasons four and five. Now you'll find most Turtles fans acknowledge it's generally fun and even has some of the standout episodes of the entire 4Kids run.

Conversely, there was a time when everyone was clambering to see the missing 4Kids season five. Guess what's now fairly unanimously acknowledged as one of the worst seasons of the show.

Don't get me started on "back in my day, comics were only 2 bucks, had decent plot/art on occasion and we liked it!" I'd probably spam up a storm.

Your point is well taken about the Brain Thief, though. It did have actual potential, but it's the execution, etc. When I wrote that, it was for more curiosity's sake -- seeing what is the general consensus as to what does and does not suck (with a dash of subjective ness) -- plus recalling the backlash at the time. Granted, I've been around for a few months, but I'm still trying to figure all that out.

Interesting point about 2003 Season 5, and admittedly, it is rather polarizing for me. Putting aside the supernatural elements (which I normally don't care for, but since the Turtles are always dealing with weirdness, it is almost a given), it was mainly the premise of "oh, by the way, did you know there is an original or another Oroku Saki? And he's an undead demon and was the greatest evil from the very beginning, but we were busy with Utrom Shredder?"

Most series, I would let it go, yet given the tight, intricate continuity that was the 2003 series -- to say nothing about disrupting the superb setting that was Season 4 -- it was no sell. It also didn't help that Tengu or Demon Shredder was even more of a bore than Ch'rell. And boy, did I miss Ch'rell after that. And, boy, did I get my wish, a few years later with Forever.

Despite all that, the season was worth it for "Membership Drive" and anytime Bishop and Baxter were involved. Some of the ideas were interesting (such as Raph's love interest being Sonya Blade), yet again, it's about execution, yada, yada. In which case, it would be the same as what was just said about "Brain Thief."

And I don't disagree about how Fast Forward has regained popularity of a sort in fandom eyes (including myself). And, as you said, I wasn't crazy about it, either, at the time, specifically for the reasons you cited. However, time helps best with perspective, especially if enough time has passed. Some seasons or series do age better than others, and some don't.

And since we've been on this side discussion about the third movie, I'll go ahead and assert my newfound appreciation. Cheap effects aside, between April being a rather active character, Raph getting true character development with his temper, a feasible non-Foot villain and time traveling mechanics that aren't total BS, it's hard to go back and say "it SUX!" so blithely. (Again, depending on who you ask or tell this to.)

Be interesting to see if this will be applied to Next Mutation, once the new DVDs are released. Maybe not "this show is awesome," but more "this show doesn't suck as much as I thought."

I'd almost be alright with the redux of Venus if, IF... they hadn't also shoehorned in the whole we're not really brothers bit. Before that I hadn't even considered a romantic aspect existing within the show, but after such hamfisted storytelling I couldn't help but think of it nor get it out of my head.

In regard to the movies I have to say that the worst in my opinion is Secret of the Ooze, if only because of the unresolved plot line of Prof. Jordan Perry. Had he been revealed as a Utrom at the end it would have made so much sense in terms of his character throughout the rest of the movie. While I understand why they ended up scrapping the idea for the final cut. That doesn't change the fact that throughout the entire performance in the film the actor brought these little otherworldly charms to the character so that for those watching closely the reveal at the end would have been that much sweeter.

Sorry for that rant, but its something that always bugged me.

I didn't care for the payoff (April being a drawing) but that whole arc where she travels through time and becomes a roach and all that, is one of my favorite bits of TMNT storytelling. Best thing Laird had done in ages, IMO.

I hated TMNT II when I was younger because of how lame everything was, likewise I didn't care for III. But I've since grown to appreciate different aspects of them.

Venus is a waste, there isn't a single redeeming quality about her, but it didn't cause me too much pain. It ruined that show, but it works in a context because that show was terrible (and wasted potential) for a lot of reasons and Venus sort of serves a blackhole that sucks it all in there and doesn't tarnish the turtles so much. It just makes her even worse. If that makes any sense.

But if I had to say the worst thing? NECA not releasing Wave 2. Seriously. I still have nightmares about that. Venus I can ignore. I can find hidden gems in tons of TMNT crap... But not getting those awesome Shredder, Foot, Elite and Utroms? That pains me man.

I'm not a big fan of what was done with April's origin, and the story never really went anywhere with it. But issue #22 itself? It's goddamn horrifying, in exactly the right way, and it's easily Laird's best writing in Volume 4.

I remember when that issue came out lots of readers liked it and thought it was a cool, unexpected twist that drew upon a classic TMNT story. Maybe it was refief at not being something random and fanboy kewl like people were expecting April's secret origin to be but there was the sense it was a good piece of work. Then the usual suspects came that hated every issue and it quickly became wrong to like it.

For me April's origin could work if it did go somewhere. Either gain freaky warp crystal powers or go the more grounded direction of her coming to terms with the idea she's no less "real" than if she'd been given birth by natural means, maybe something could be done with taking up Nobody's mantle but the story just got sidelined.

I would like to think her story will intertwine somewhat if Laird ever does finish Vol. 4. I'd like to think that Kirby's crystal belongs to the horned alien and that he's manufacturing the Guardifriend toys to search for it so he can reshape the universe in his own image. When he finds that April is the only link to the now gone crystal he kidnaps her and uses her as some kind of conduit to acess it's powers cue the Thirty-something Mutant Ninja Turtles to the rescue.

One of the creepier revelations of the origin issue was that there had been a "first" April, another baby drawn by her dad before the one we knew. That one disappeared.

Where do all the crystal drawings disappear to? The alternate universe we saw in the Donatello micro-series.

What newly revealed plot element links universes together? The Battle Nexus. And if the first April ended up in Kirby-land, she was probably something of a warrior by this point. Were we headed for some April-meeting-April reconciliation?

But that kind of shoots Laird's whole "I could probably finish in six more issues" thing. As do most of the still-hanging plotlines in Volume 4, actually.

I really didn't care for the April origin story...

April having an ordinary human background is a nice contrast to the fantastic origin of the turtles.

I found April's origin way stranger than mutant turtles:lol:

I hated the April is a drawing origin story. Really didn't like the "back in time as a cockroach/implied that she mated with other cockroaches" twist at all. Gross, weird, and not necessary. I think it's funny that Peter says often, how "lame" it is when people discuss how "neat" it would be if there were a secret Fifth Turtle. And he's right, that's pretty cheesy and lame. But he actually thought the April angle was BETTER? He must have, because he wrote it. I could actually believe there were 5 turtles in the bowl at one point, it's a dumb retcon but not implausible. April's origin isn't just implausible, it's done with such earnest delivery that you can tell he really wants it to be taken seriously. Doesn't work. Part of me could even accept Venus if the character had a different origin or was handled in a different way, but I refuse to accept that April was sketched into existence by a magic pencil.

I'd hate it the same if it were any other main character, in any other series, it's just a dumb idea. "Lois Lane was secretly a magic drawing?" "Batman actually wished Robin into existence by doodling on a magic Etch-A-Sketch?" I'm sorry, it just doesn't work for me. Other than the Turtles Tunes/Christmas tapes, this is by far the thing I hate the most, even moreso because if you describe the story to someone, it sounds so stupid they'd refuse to believe it, and yet it's "Official". I get how it works on a "meta" level - after all, they're ALL just drawings, "GET IT?" - but it doesn't work at all as a character's "actual" backstory. It's the kind of thing that when Grant Morrison does it, people get all pissed off. And Grant Morrison may have had Batman go back in time, but he didn't have him f*ck a cockroach, or even imply it. I knew the book was all downhill from there. Thank God for Tales, which was better than Vol. 4 in almost every way.

Sorry, I can obviously see how some people really like that story, but I'm pretty sure I'll never agree or understand why. Good for you for liking it though, I just pretend it didn't happen, because, like "Superman: Birthright", the world was just a better place before its existence.

The drawing, yes. That's what I oppose.

The drawing thing could have been good if it was ever important in any way. As it is, it doesn't really go anywhere. Cipher's ideas above are good examples of things it could have been a setup for.

Semi-edit: Just looked up a summary on wiki and I had already forgotten that it did involve her not being able to have kids and actually came after her becoming Nobody. I was thinking those could have been tied in somehow, but I guess they already were and I forgot, so I guess they did involve something, at least.

I suppose the idea of connecting the Kirby world to the Battle Nexus effectively removes any fear she should have of disappearing, as if she did, she could just get back that way.

edit: typed up my feelings after having finished watching 4kids in another thread and it reminded me of another terrible thing in TMNT history: Leonardo riding around on one of those dumb folding scooter things, as if it was supposed to be cool.

There are actually some women who can't get kids due to some medical problems, no matter how much they try. And they are not drawings...

If you want something considered worse along those lines? How about Operation:Blue Line? I love hearing the '87 cartoon voices but the whole short made me cringe it was so bad.

Of course, but it's one of the questions that you might ask yourself if you found out you were a drawing.

I agree, I remember telling my sister about it and she flat out refused to believe it was the case. Then when she bought the issue to see for herself we had a long discussion

The drawing thing could have been good if it was ever important in any way.

Which tied in nicely to this post. My sister felt that it was odd that April didn't have a bigger reaction to the whole thing. She said it felt like she was more bothered by the cockroach stuff than the fact that she is a drawing. Which in rereading is kind of true. The book is sort of your entire existence up until this point is a lie and she focuses on that explaning why she can't have children. Sure it ends with the "I'm Nobody." line but even that is resolved rather quickly.

Understandable. Maybe the writers were aware of the possible Turtlecest issues -- to say nothing about that eventually spreading like wildfire in the years to follow among the fanfic fandom -- so they pulled a CYA, just in case. Again, it isn't the issue itself, but how it was presented. Either way, I understand.

I don't disagree about "if only Perry was shown to be what he truly was: an Utrom." However, given Krang's massive popularity and the fanbase at that time may be too young to discern such a difference, I understand and accept the decision not to go there. (Of course, hindsight is 20/20 and other cliches.)

Anyway, the purpose of this post -- besides replying to the above -- is to add further to my previous "certain then-unpopular characters or interpretations aging better than expected" theme. Upon reflection, 87 or Fred Wolf Slash should be added to the mix. Yes, as we all had our badass Slash figures in 1990, quite a few of us undoubtedly went, "Argh! Why couldn't the animated version be more badass like the action figure?! RUINED FOREVER!" The Archie version restored his image considerably, yet, over time, 87 Slash does possess a certain derp-y charm.

And, hey, it didn't hurt he was the most physically strongest characters on the show (he did lift a small building over his head in "Night of the Rogues"). "Donatello Trashes Slash" showed that if he kept his intellect, he probably would have successfully conquered everything in sight. It also really didn't hurt that, "everyone tricked him" or quite a few did. (I haven't seen "Donatello Trashes Slash" in years, but I don't believe the aliens that gave Slash his intellect boost were untoward about him. Feel free to correct me, please.) Such feelings are almost pity-based, sure, but it trumps any sort of nerd rage in the long run.

To a lesser extent, such pity or derpiness or bizarre ness explains my newfound fondness for SOTO Tokka and Rahzar, and maybe Post-Season 1 Bebop and Rocksteady, as well. (I didn't actively loathe when younger, but I wasn't crazy about any of them, either.)

Or, it is "How I Got Over My 87 Slash Nerd Rage And Started To Like That Derpy Maniac."
