That's cool and all but I'm not going to SDCC and I'm not dropping 200 bucks for a slipcase and a cover variant. Had I known about this before I bought the other books maybe. However buying them all from Amazon cost under 100 so its a tough sell there.

$200 for a different cover?

Yeah, if I were to even be interested, it better already have a full colored drawing of a Turtle in there somewhere. I'm guessing it's tailored for the 'completist'. I just don't see the appeal. But more power to ya if you do.

Scanderson
06-22-2012, 04:01 PM
If money isn't an issue, and you want something a bit rarer, why not, huh? Especially if you are looking for the volumes and have't bought 'em yet. No way I would miss this.

Actually looking at what it is. If it were full colored and had some kind of exclusive bonus material I'd pay 200$ and that's provided I could afford it. I'm an eighteen year old bartender and I live by myself, funny thing is I'm better off than a lot of comic fans. Idk who they're selling to.

Well with an edition of 40, they don't really need to think too hard about demographic. I'm sure they'll dig up 40 completionists

I do suppose that if some that have preordered the set change their minds or do not attend the convention, it is quite possible that they will be put up for sale on the site. I imagine if they are not picked up by noon on Sunday, they will open them for purchase at the convention.

Rich, you should chime in on this. I'm interested in what your take is.

Hey, sorry for the delay...I didn't see this thread until now. However, a few days ago I did post about this in the Comic Release Date Thread (http://forums.thetechnodrome.com/showpost.php?p=960373&postcount=134).

So, my personal thoughts on this? Well, since you asked... :D

This was a tricky one for me as I had to research quite a bit about it before making a decision. In the end, I chose not to buy it. From a logistics standpoint, since I'm not attending Comic-Con this year, I'd have no way to get it even if I did buy it.

However, logistics issues aside (and from a purely "collectible" standpoint), it came down to the actual contents of this collection and the high price-point that made the decision for me. The slipcase is the only item here that isn't available individually. While the slipcase is cool, it's not designated / marked as "SDCC" or "Comic-Con" and it's not signed and/or numbered. In addition, the books themselves aren't designated / marked as "SDCC" or "Comic-Con" anywhere and they are each available for purchase separately for $50 each. With a $200 price tag for this set, that basically means that the slipcase is $50.

Since I primarily collect the comics and collected books, I know I wouldn't buy a standalone slipcase if it were offered on the IDW site separately. Bottom line...if the set were signed and/or numbered "x of 40" or had "Comic-Con 2012" or "SDCC 2012" or some designation of rarity then I would definitely want to get it. Since it doesn't and I already have (or will have) the books within the set, I chose to pass on it.

Scanderson
06-27-2012, 07:00 AM
Although, Kevin is always at the con at the Heavy Metal booth. Anyone who wants theirs signed/sketched can do so. I will have mine signed while I am there. Big factor in me making the purchase.

zodach
06-27-2012, 11:07 AM
Does anyone have any details about Kevin signing at SDCC?

Since I purchased this set I was wondering where would be the best place to have him sign (inside cover, slipcase, etc.) and if he would be able to sketch on it also?

Also, will he sign a couple other TMNT comics while I'm there or are his signings limited to one item per person?

Scanderson
06-27-2012, 05:04 PM
Kevin has always been extremely accessible at the convention. He will likely have a time scheduled at the IDW booth, but you can usually catch him at his Heavy Metal booth most other times of the day. I will likely have the slipcase signed since that is the item unique to the convention. He always does a sketch for my daughter each year as well.

Spoken very eloquently, Rich. My exact workds to Steph, when he showed it to me was "F*** that!"

As someone who also collects all floppies, variants, trades, and hc's/variants, this was just a little too ridiculous and a proverbial slap in the face to us "hardcore" collectors. Who ever is in charge of putting material like this on the market should really do more market research into our wants/likes/dislikes and gauge our reaction before releasing something like this.

Then again, with only 40 sets, they probably don't care because they know there is at least 40 people on the nation who will want this out of compulsion or ignorance (but our niche is so tight-knit, ignorance in regards to a collectible product isn't likely).

Archon_Turtle

Has anyone heard directly from IDW about whether they are going to be making this set unique or not?

I have.

I wrote them a letter:

To Whom It May Concern:

My name is Stephan Reese. I am a long time collector of the TMNT, and a staunch fan of the new IDW Turtles series. Tom and crew are doing a fantastic job.

Out of all my various TMNT collectables, a cornerstone of my collection has always been my comics. For years I have prided myself on the level of completeness of my Turtles comic collection, which boasts every Turtles release in the history of the brand. Every variant and every edition of every issue; Even "crazy stuff" like the Gobbledygook books, and a copy of Turtlemania Gold (of which, 10 copies were ever printed). I am a tried-and-true TMNT comic completionist.

So it goes without saying that my collection features every issue, cover, printing, and collected edition that IDW has released for the Turtles brand to date. This includes both of the convention exclusives for the currently released Ultimate Edition hard covers. So you can imagine my disappointment when I read today that the SDCC exclusive slipcase release of the Ultimate Editions would contain both of these books which I already own... but I promptly ordered anyway.

With an edition size of 40, a first-party website only ordering system, and SDCC pick-up only, it is pretty clear that the core demographic of this set is the hardcore collector. Because to be frank, the casual fan or the first time buyer is probably going to order the regular editions of the books through a third party site like Amazon for half of MSRP. Like me, the vast majority of these collectors have most likely already purchased two out of the three books in this set (Twice, if you count the regular editions of the books).

The intent of this letter is simply to urge you to make this purchase worthwhile for myself and the 39 others who are going to purchase the set by either making the books different, or by adding something to the package that is truly exclusive. This way we won't feel like we are paying $200 for one new book and a slip cover.

Could you release the set as-is and still sell them all? Of course you could. Because for people like me who are buying this set, the "if you don't like it, don't buy it" argument simply isn't an option. However, without feeling like we are being provided something truly unique for the premium price we are paying, we hardcore collectors who bleed for the brand you are publishing are going to feel incredibly taken advantage of. Is that really something you want to make a practice of doing to some of the most loyal fans the Turtles fandom has?

Sincerely Yours,
Stephan Reese

And received this back:

Stephan - We received your email and certainly can see your point of view. We are going to add a small postcard/print of the slipcase art within this edition to help provide a little bit incremental value.

Thanks.

Jerry.

In the interest of disclosure, this was not the entire response, but it is all the information I was given regarding the set. The email response I got was pretty lengthy, so please don't think they just sent me a 2 sentence response.

Okay, so others critisize IDW releasing basically a slip cover for $200, and get nothing. I, and other early on, say it's not worth it, and I practically get our head bit off. Sometimes there's a double standard on here...

And it awesome they decided to up the value in the purchase by adding a small print/postcard of the slipcover art. That should make it all worth it now...

Although I've decided against the collection, and do not feel the postcard print significantly increases the perceived value to justify the expense, I feel if the inclusion of a unique drawing by Kevin, Duncan, or a mix of both, would be more valuable to justify the cost.

40 individual, unique pieces of art for each set.

The sets are selling on EBay for $350 and $400 so far. This is a very limited item and people are going to want it. The original slipcase is cooler than any variant cover you could make. Now with the inclusion of the postcard/art, that is just an added bonus. If you want to individualize it even more, get Kevin to sign/sketch it. If you figure into the $200 purchase price that you will get it signed/sketched, how is this not an awesome exclusive? I am stoked!!!

To each their own on this one...but many completists don't see these as actual variants. It's a unique situation that we, as collectors, haven't really experienced before...it's a limited edition item as a set but the set contents are no different than the individual singles. A slipcase is not a comic and so that doesn't put it in my realm of collecting interests. I think it's cool but, at $200, it won't be gracing my collection.

But isn't that the great part of collecting? If all our collections were identical that wouldn't be any fun. :D Enjoy it and the Con.

Scanderson
07-01-2012, 08:31 AM
I do agree with you. Maybe it is just unique to comic collecting. I am primarily a toy collector of all different makes, and only collect TMNT comics. I am more used to toy collecting, where every minor variant, from color, to packaging, to "just about any slight change" that makes it rarer than another piece creates value. In reality, who cares If the package has a different logo, or if the belt is red vs. Blue, right? But people want it if it is hard to find. I view this as a unique set. Sure, almost all of the contents are the same, but the packaging and postcard are different and rare. Many of the highly sought after collectilbles are only slight variations of the regular versions (variations that do not come close to creating actual increased value of the item, only collectible value). I once owned a Mcfarlane Toys Hockey figure that I sold for $25,000 because it had a #13 painted on the jersey rather than the normal #8. Only 13 were produced. The regular version sells for $10. Obviously, the actual value of painting the #13 did not cost $24,910. I can understand if this doesn't fit into some folks' collections, but there is no question that the collectible value is there with 40 pieces.

that's awesome, congrats! I just wish they would do a slipcase for the people that bought the books on there own. It could be a variant of the SDCC. Yea, that listing does not makes sense. Even if the slipcase was damaged, why would you not include it anyway? Are the B/W books numbered for this set?

The slipcase is one of two unique things about this set...the postcard / print is the second. The books themselves are the same as those available directly from the IDW Store for $50 each. The only benefit to buying this auction is that the #1 Ltd. Ed. book is sold out and not available.
