thanks for the preview, interesting how things play out....I have to say one of the things that catches me getting a little sad about the new comic series is apart from some visual differences in taste at times a little cheesy dialogue/monologue...I am sorry that I feel that way every now and then but I cant help it.it feels cheesy at times.in the end though the book always offers more positive than that and I am eager to find out how things will tie up in the upcomming issues....
an example for what I named cheesy could be found in issue ten for instance.splinter captured by the foot and every second speech bubble you are using 'rodent' to adress splinter....also the way karai is talking to him makes me wonder if she maybe isn't as high a ninja as in the past.she seems to be easily angered and freaking out about things splinter says...
in this preview I felt like that a little too...also with shredder standing in the same spot for 44 pages?;)....
but like I said overall I really like the new turtles adventures too and am looking forward to reading issue 11.
thanks for listening;)

Well, you know, rats LOVE cheese! And *spoiler* Shredder is standing in the same spot all this time because Karai freaked out and super-glued his boots to the dais. *end spoiler*

I hope he lobs Alopex's melon off... although I know he won't. They wouldn't kill off a character they just created so soon.

Given all the trouble of creating her, then introducing her into the main storyline, I do hope she sticks around for a while.

Anyway, his line of "I am a rat, but I am also ninja," the issue will be worth it for that. And I'm sure it will plastered on a thousand icons and sigs, and it should.

I'm not so sure about that. They kind of just established she existed without really bringing her into the main story til just now. I don't think she'll die but it wouldn't surprise me if shredder killed her for failing or something.

Killed her? I don't know, that seems unlikely to me...I'm thinking she's going to go rogue on Saki.

I love that the Technodrome gets previews, but I can't read them. Waiting one, two, or even four weeks for an issue, only to be able to read it in 10 minutes at the most, hurts. And if I read part of it online, then I don't have that much more to read when it actually comes out.

Just like with 'The Walking Dead' comic, I hate waiting so long for something, read it in ten minutes, then having to wait another 1-4 weeks to see what happens. But I guess that's the comic world.

I actually got that feeling too, that's why she's one of the options on the poll I posted for issue elevens surprising new ally, but she's still a new character with little development, she's still in the safe kill off zone although I think creating her was too much effort to off right away. Pretty much I think she can be killed off and it won't surprise me if it happens but I don't think it will.

Here's my full review of TMNT #11 at TMNT Entity. (http://tmntentity.blogspot.com/2012/06/tmnt-idw-11.html)

This was the first issue in a while where I was left feeling a bit "meh". Not that the story is bad or the dialogue, but that it just had so much going on that it couldn't dedicate enough space per issue to each plot thread. I'm really having a problem with the fact that it took the Shredder 3 issues and 3 months just to move from where he was standing.

I think things will turn around next issue as the plot threads start to coelesce and we don't have to keep switching back and forth between parties quite so much. Loved Angel's description of Hob and Alopex, by the way.

Thanks for the review, Spengs! And, yes, Shredder's been rather stoic, but when you enter another master's dojo, you better be willing to defeat his best students first before you're allowed to face him/her.

Splinter's done that, so now the main event can begin. If you like action, issue #12 is gonna make you smile, my friend, I guarantee it! And, to answer a question in your review, we did base Angel off the 4Kids character. She's a bit older here than in the 4Kids cartoon where she first appeared (although, she does appear older in later TV episodes). She's a character I like a lot, and we have some fun plans for her -- you'll even meet her dad in a big way in... well, you'll just have to wait for the big announcement coming soon.

Talk soon!

Ooh, that's got me all tingly.

Angel always felt a bit squandered in the 4Kids series; I think she only appeared in a handful of episodes after her introduction. So it'll be great to see her fleshed out some more. And I can only guess as to who you might be alluding to, but now I've got my own suspicions brewing in my noggin and they've got me excited.

Angel appeared in 5 different 4kids episodes:

"Fallen Angel" (her debut)
"The Christmas Aliens" (she was at the Christmas party)
"The Darkness Within" (her second main episode)
Season 4...she was in the episode after Karai destroyed the Turtles lair
"Wedding Bells and Bytes" (she was in the series finale at the wedding)

She could have been used more but she appeared throughout the show.

like seeing the dragons like that. Not blood thirsty.murderers, troubled kids with not so bad intentions. Glad someone else has noticed all the mutants and ninjas running around too and I assume they won't be allies of the turtles forever. Angels dad? Big way? I think we're all thinking of the same man here. I also like more characters being about my age(18): Casey, April, Karai and now Angel. Just makes it more fun to read. Really liking this series

I kinda agree on the pacing. Each issue is only a certain amount of pages but with so many plotlines going on its hard to see anything progressed. I think too many characters have been introduced too quickly.

You have to deal with Shredder/Karai/Alopex on one side, then Krang/Traag/Baxter on the other, in addition to Old Hob and now the Purple Dragons.

As much as I enjoy the IDW series thus far it does make me wonder if the pacing is suffering because too many characters were introduced too quickly. It makes me wonder how long it'll take to see what Krang's plans even are.

DarkLightDragon

One thing I did like about this issue is that the Leo/Don feud is supposedly over for now. Don admitted he was wrong and apologized to Leo for doubting him. But instead of being straight up smug about it, Leo maturely says it's okay and that Donnie was right to question until proof is shown.

Even though I found Don's whole "I don't believe this whole reincarnation crap" tiring after the last couple issues, I do like how he's not being treated as the bad guy here and that his doubts are understandable and it kind of makes him relatable to the readers who also find the extra origin story a tad odd at first.

Don in a way is representing us. I think the whole reincarnation thing is too much and would like to be able to ignore it. Though if it does not not effect the story beyond the Splinter/Shredder connection I am down with it.

I don't care for Angel so use her or not its nothing special. It did appear that the Purple Dragons are like a Neighborhood Watch more than a random street gang. If Bebop and Rocksteady are working for Shredder and are not Purple dragons then we are likely to see rivial gangs clash?

Angel's father is a upcoming player? Can anyone say Hun? Another character I never cared for. Yet what if Tatsu is Karai's father and Hun is Angel's father? As Inspector Gadget would say,"WOWZERS!":teek: Mr. Waltz might make characters that bored me interesting with Hun(?) and Angel.

Thanks again, Mr. Waltz unless this anticipation does not kill me before the next issue.

No Baxter,Krang, and Captain Tragg. I was hoping for that three way fight! Next issue? PLEASE! This is what I have been waiting for! That and Bebop and Rocksteady mutated. :tgrin: This waiting is going to kill me yet!:teek:

I think I'm like a lot of people, I'm loving the series but it feels like it is taking forever for things to happen. All the characters they are introducing are cool and fun but I'd like to see one whole arch get finished before starting new ones.

I mean we are still waiting to see what Krang is doing, and now we have the Shredder with the Foot attacking New York. How did Saki live so long? I mean something major has to be going on there. Then in this issue we see the Purple Dragons. Maybe it's just me but I'd like some answers before we get more questions.

*contemplates using spoiler tags, as this is just conjecture...*
Yeah, I'll tag it, don't wanna pull a STOCKMAN.
I like the idea of Hun and Tatsu being being Angel's and Karai's fathers, respectively. What if they are 2 wayward sons of Oroku Saki, with Hun leaving the fold when he finds out some secret about his grandpappy...
:D

corvus
06-27-2012, 04:42 PM
Where the hell did Tatsu come from? Did Tom or someone mention him or is it just speculation? I've always pictured Karai as an orphan. This version maybe an orphan and descendant of Saki. Addressing him as "grandfather" is probably easier than "great great great great great great great great great grandfather" or whatever. I don't like the Tatsu/Khan character, really one dimensional, I don't think we'll see it here, I hope I'm wrong so we can flesh him out a little more. Hun as Angels father? That's what I was thinking. Would explain why she's a relatively incompetent fighter yet all the dragons seem to listen to her(although most men listen when crazy girls yell) yet no one addressed her as the leader. Also note that Casey doesn't like the dragons at all and my guess is he thinks they're no better than any other gang. They probably shake people down for protection money. My guess is we'll see more of them in Caseys micro and possibly Hun, if he is Angels dad.

Cowabunga Carl
06-27-2012, 04:54 PM
Shredder has always had a lackey in all the different versions, save Mirage as he wasn't around long enough to. The original cartoon it was Bebop and Rocksteady, the movies Tatsu, 2k3 Hun. So I could see why people would think he would have one in this universe.

Anyway onto the speculation that Hun will be Angel's Dad. I'm not sure how I'd feel about that. In 2k3 Casey feels protective of her. To change it to where they are more rivals could be fun. It would be interesting to see what dynamic Hun would play in Casey's life then. 2k3 set him up as the rival, the guy who was responsible for ruining Casey's life. It would also lend its self to making a very unique dynamic between Angel and him.

DrSpengler
06-27-2012, 05:21 PM
The 4Kids Angel was never anything more than a prop character for "a very special episode" about why it's totally uncool to join gangs, dude. And after they got the message across, she was hardly ever seen again.

With "anti-gang" being basically her only notable feature (and purple hair, I guess), the idea that she'd be trying to turn the Purple Dragons away from thuggery and into a neighborhood watch group seems in tune with the spirit of the character. Also, she has purple hair.

It's a case of taking, not so much a "bad" character but a very flimsy one, and doing something new with her while still retaining their essence (and purple hair).

As for aging her, I guess that makes sense for the role she needed to play in the story (either leader or someone others would follow).

It all seems pretty well thought-out, like most of the stuff in the IDW book (I piss and moan about the pacing all the time, I know; but I really do love the universe they're building and it's all really foundationally solid).

I'm kind of happy to see purple dragons that don't work for the shredder. This "war" the french guy warned may get a little more complicated. I'm starting to see a really complex retelling of city at war coming up. And I'm telling you guys, the purple dragons aren't gonna be good guys. Honestly, I wouldn't really like if they were. They'll get angel out and all that probably a little after we meet their leader who may be Hun(who may be her father). Wonder if dragon face will show?

I just realized the only reason Angel has purple hair is because she's part of the Purple Dragons...and I am talking about her 4kids incarnation. Not sure why it took me nearly 9 years to figure this out when I watched her debut episode way back in 2003...

HATED Angel in 2k3, but she already seems pretty likable in this universe. I'm thankful for that. I also like the changes made to the Purple Dragons, pretty interesting. As the book goes on it takes refreshing turns from the versions it pulls from, thus becoming more enjoyable with time. Quite liked Splinters dialogue, very true to the character. Great art as usual. Solid issue.

My only quip is that I'm not a fan of some of the words Tom uses. A lof of the slang terns chosen for the younger characters is out of date, and even when 'in', were rather corny. "Hells yeah", for example. I'd rather he just use more general names/replies so as not to make the book feel dated or attempting to be hip. I think I saw "dweeb" and "dork" in past issues, too. Meh. I'm a fan of his writing otherwise, though. I had my doubts at first with what I considered to be the turtles being pigeon-holed, but that seems to of died down, & I like how the pacing has evolved a bit, too.

I had my doubts at first with what I considered to be the turtles being pigeon-holed, but that seems to of died down, & I like how the pacing has evolved a bit, too.

outdated slang is the best kind of slang :P

How old are you powder? Cause "hells yeah" isn't dated, Idk if anyone mentioned the way Angel talked but it sounded pretty modern. I think I'm younger than a lot of you and I'm a bartender, I hear this stuff a lot and Toms up on his slang. My only problem with this issue is there was no Hob, Krang or Stockman..We're kind if left hanging but you can onky do so much in 32 pages.

EDIT: personally I wish we could go back to calling people "squares" and saying things like "the bees knees". How fab would that be?

Oh, snap!

:P

And, don't feel lonely Powder, because you're not alone in your critique of my choice of words. Here's a lovely smack from the reviewer at IGN regarding issue #11:

"Some spotty writing kills what’s otherwise been a convincing Turtles reboot, too. “Yes. I am a rat. But I am also a ninja!” and “Ain’t gonna be no next time, freakazoid!” are more Archie comic cliché than intelligent and mature reboot, which is a worrisome movement Tom Waltz needs to knock off immediately."

Guess I have my marching orders from him, eh? Not.

(Heh. Did you see what I just did there? Nyuk nyuk.)

On a serious note, thanks, everyone, for your continued support and enthusiasm -- issue #12 is gonna rock your socks off (well... that is, if you like ninja fightin' and stuff).

Talk soon!

My only quip is that I'm not a fan of some of the words Tom uses.

I think the word you're looking for is "qualm" or "quibble," but I kind of feel the same way. Fist-bumping and the word "bro" being thrown around made me feel a little uncomfortable at first, but these incidents of "teenagery slang" aren't too often, so I'm able to overlook it for the most part.

I don't know if his complaint is the fact that the slang being used is dated, but mine is that using slang at all automatically dates your work meaning that even if it's up-to-date now, eventually 10 or 20 years from now, it will feel dated. I personally prefer to keep things as timeless as possible, but I can understand the need or desire to make the turtles feel more youthful.

EDIT: Except "slime puppy." Tom, can you please bring that back?!

Meh. In 10 to 20 years there will (hopefully) be new iterations of the Turtles to use their own modern slang. That's part of the fun of pop culture icons - they may get recycled each generation but they evolve to reflect the times.

I thought this issue was pretty decent. I do feel like it went by fast and nothing really happened. Maybe I read it to fast though? Idk. I'm ready for some more action, so I will be looking forward more to 12.

Wow...just wow.

Issue #11 had me at the edge of my seat the entire time. The climb to the climax has been slow, but damn, this was worth the wait!

I'm glad Don had a character moment there, apologizing to Leo.

Can't wait for #12...

Just read it today, I like the new Angel.

Splinter took out the entire Foot clan himself. This worried me that the Turtles won't have any Foot ninja to fight in the next issue. Other than Leo, the Turtles overall still have not had their first Foot Clan fight. I hope we get that next issue.

Maybe that will prompt him to bring out the big guns, like elite gaurds or something. That'd be pretty cool. Always loved those guys.

They kind of have to at this point. Leonardo in his first real fight with any fellow ninjas was able to take them out by the truckload solo, and now Splinter does too. If something like the Elite isn't introduced soon, I'm not sure how much of a threat the modern day IDW Foot really is.

Splinter I can see. He knows how they fight. Leo had a much harder time if I remember, he was fighting backwards and fleeing, he's supposed to be the most skilled of all his brothers so yeah the foot are a kind of threat compared to an average thug. But I bet those guys in the red demon masks that executed Yoshis sons will probably end up being the foot elite. However I'm not sure they'll show up. I think they're saving a lot for the turtles second fight with the shredder. Its already been revealed he'll survive this one (solicitation for #13) their second fight, whenever that is will probably be when we see bebop an rocksteady too.

I am hoping in the next issue when the Turtles arrive Shredder/Karai summon a whole new batch of Foot to join the fight.

I'll be really disappointed if we don't get our first TMNT VS. Foot battle in #12.

I have been pretty bored with this series since issue #5, aside from the micro's. Here's hoping it picks up with #12 or #13. There is just not enough happening in each issue.

Its the opposite for me, I've been enjoying the series very much since #5 and up.

The first four issues I wasn't keen on due to the new origin and not being sure about where they were going with it. But now after #5 and onward I appreciate it more.

Its obvious though #1-12 are all pretty much one story arc. It takes us 1 year of 12 issues to get through the whole introduction of all the major characters.

FINALLY got this one. First issue of the main title I didn't get on the release date.

After reading several people complain about the pace and not much happening, I have to disagree. I was definitely satisfied with this one, and I freakin loved every single panel that involved Splinter.

That being said, the Purple Dragon stuff was slightly tedious... it's a cool new take on them, but I really don't look forward to seeing them at all in the next issue. I really wish they would have taken the guys to Foot HQ and left the issue there. The "epic group shot" was kinda corny considering they're basically just giving the turtles directions.

Back to the Splinter scenes, I liked his chat with Alopex. Makes me wonder why she's so loyal. And the stuff with Shredder's lack of confidence in Karai is intriguing, I wonder where they're going with that.

The ending was very cool, but considering the Splinter Micro ended on that "Let's go!" note, it was kinda frustrating going through that again. Oh well, makes me want #12 that much more.

I believe in the ninja notes section of number eleven its confirmed that we will see them again. So we know they were not a mere cameo or scrapped idea. But being that sins of the father is only two issues and the arc after that (tom or someone said its called blood brothers in another thread) will probably have Krang as the main villain I think it'll be awhile. Hmm maybe they'll be involved in the attack on the antique shop.

I still think we could see them next issue. I mean with the Turtles showing up at Foot headquarters Shredder may pull out all the stops. If they were to introduce them in their mutated forms this would be a great time.

I see it's already been mentioned, but I feel compelled to mention it again. As I'm reading this series, I clearly enjoy it (despite some changes I very strongly disagree with), but more than anything else, the dialogue can really hurt sometimes. Tom, I love you, and I love how you reach out to the community; that is very solid and decent of you, and you have my eternal respect. But c'mon, man. Who says "stinkin'" anymore?

The new issue is pretty good. I wish we could just move past the reincarnation idea, confirm it in the book, and not mention it anymore. I just don't like that aspect. I'm glad we're finally going to see Shredder and Splinter face off in #12 (after that 'Rocky III' bit), and can't wait to see the Turtles meet up with the Foot.

Do you know what was even going on? It looked like Mikey saw someone, put down the pizza, jumped down, and started hugging the girl from behind. I honestly didn't, and still don't, know what went on.

I believe they were trying to get across that even when somebody is spying on the Turtles, Mikey will still use humor to deal with the situation. Given the fact that it was a female intruder, I assumed he (Michelangelo) was trying to be flirty at the same time.
