Which catch-phrase do you prefer, Cowabunga or Booyakasha

So in the new TMNT cartoon, Mikey now says "booyakasha" instead of "Cowabunga". Personally, i like cowabunga better, but what do you guys think? Do you like Cowabunga or Booyakasha better?

That is my thought. Cowagunga had entered lexicon before Michelangelo first uttered it but this "Booyasha" just sounds like random gibberish and awkward.

I don't think they're going to say it every other sentence, but I'm sure it'll be in every episode, during a fight scene, or when Mikey shows his love for something. And if every now and then, the other Turtles call him out on it, or use it for comedic relief (as in the trailer), I'll embrace it.

Of course, as a TMNT fan, I prefer Cowabunga, and always will, no matter how many catchphrases there are. But I'm not going to hate on the new phrase because I'm an old-school fan.

I love both....well...maybe not love booyakasha, but I definitely feel it's appropriate. It, imho, has a very similar vibe to cowabunga. As much as I love the '87 toon, and while cowabunga will always have a special place in my heart, I see no reason to be upset that they aren't using it as the Mikey's catch phrase in this new show.

I'll be proud if booyakasha becomes this new generation of turtle's fans cowabunga. I'll be sharing cowabunga with my nephew, but it's nice to see that this new generation will have something completely their own.

Honestly, I'm sure alot of the original, Mirage fans were like "WTF is this 'cowabunga' crap?" when the OT came out. This series is trying to be different, rather than giving us the same stuff over again, so I understand trying to add new elements, like a new catchphrase.

Honestly, who gives a ****? It's a kids' series and if the powers that be decide the Turtles should have a funny word to throw around that kids can connect to the series, then whatever. One is just as good as the other, and change is generally refreshing.

Cowabunga is awesome because it's nostalgic, but now it just sounds odd saying it in a non-ironic way which was not the case when the OT began so I can see why they are not using it since it's not really a "hip" word. As long as they say it once as an easter egg I'll be happy.

Booyakasha sounds like a lame way to make a new catchphrase that basically represents what "cowabunga" did in the OT without it sounding cheesy. And oddly enough I think it works well, it'll never beat cowabunga but that is more nostalgia than anything else.

Kevin Eastman himself said that fans prefered Cowabunga over Booyakasha at the London Con, and that may be appearing more starting in Season 2, but this gives us an opportunity to see how the public will react to the new catchphrase. I even thought Casey's Goongola from the 4kids series was kind of catchy. Still, even though "Cowabunga" is no longer in vogue as a general slang term, it is a staple of TMNT and still appears in headlines in the media fairly often.

It's not random gibberish, and it's not booyasha. It's booyakasha.
Booyakasha, also booyaka, also booya, is (from a combination of what I can find and what I know) a slang word likely originating in the Caribbean, possibly Jamaica, and gaining some popularity as street slang in the US around the 1980s (and gaining a much wider spread in the 2000s through Sacha Baron Cohen's "Da Ali G Show"). It's almost certainly derived from onomatopoeia of a gunshot echoing, although it's usually used to express approval or enjoyment.

In the sense that it became popular through a different TV show, it's kind of similar to Cowabunga. I think that came from something like "Kawabonga", which was from Howdy Doody or something. I guess Ali G is the new Howdy Doody.

But as to the OP question, I don't really have a preference. Cowabunga made sense in the 80's. Surfers were saying it then. It was a thing. These days, Cowabunga is mostly associated with the Turtles, so nobody really says it in reference to anything else anymore. Booyakasha, in a sense, is the new cowabunga. It's a thing people say in sort of the same context. But I hope they don't end up over-using it the same way the '87 show over-used cowabunga. Catchphrases in general are kind of played out.

It's certainly because of the Splinter nostalgia that I definitely prefer cowabunga. Though I don't actually mind the new booyakasha. Sure, it's kind weird to hear at first, and I have to wonder why cowabunga suddenly became outdated and the turtles required a new catchphrase, but I think it's just as silly and fun sounding. No complaints here, even if my own headcanon turtles will always stick with the classic :tcool:

I think that "Cowabunga" is as integral to the Turtles mythology as their love for pizza. It's really a word that many of us learned because of TMNT. I don't have a problem with "Booyakasha", but I'd prefer it not replace the former.

I loved Cowabunga as a kid, but I am totally fine with both. Some kids today have never watched anything related to TMNT and some haven't even heard of them at all until recently. This is a new show that is being designed for those kids (with some elements added for us older fans). I would have loved it if they would have used Cowabunga in the new Nick show, but I am not upset with their choice. Too much importance is place on a catch-phrase. I am just thrilled that kids today get to experience the coolness of TMNT and I am too. :tgrin:

Watching everyone try to get excited about "booyakasha" at the comicon event was a little bit cringe inducing. "Cowabunga" is classic and appropriately hokey.

"Booyakasha" is what Ali G said 10 years ago, it's silly to try to start a trend out of it and I really hope they don't use it too much.

The good news is that the dialog in most of the clips currently released is true to the turtles charachterization and humorous so hopefully the writers have a good head on their shoulders to the point where they won't have to resort to unfunny catchphrases constantly.

I like "booyakasha" just fine. Yes, I'm always going to fondly remember "cowabunga", but that term is dated, and I'm glad they've made a change. It sounds more like a Japanese war cry one would shout in battle anyway.

And as for your question, TM, I'd say that "booyakasha" is way better than "It's ninja time!" because the first phrase is being put into the series from the beginning while "It's ninja time!" was hastily shoehorned into Fast Forward when they never had a catchphrase in the first five seasons.
