For those who are interested, I stumbled upon the new cover art for the TMNT Adventures Vol. 2 cover art, very much in the same vein as Vol. 1's artwork. The Lawsonisms are even more apparent in this one!

It's cool to see Lawson's newest interpretations of characters he first drew nearly two decades ago in a completely different style.

Goes to prove that we were all probably right that the other one was drawn by Jim and colored by Steve.

I still like to think Steve Lavigne just decided one day: "Hey, I think I wanna try to draw like Jim!"

I'm wondering now...was the reference to Lavigne specific to the covers, or did he work on the interiors of any of the first few Archie books?

Awesome! I find it weird their skin is colored like the 2K3 turtles and not like they are in the book. Still great to see Lawson doing TMNT art again.

Whoever is coloring these is doing a horrible job. The Turtles do NOT have brown arm and leg bands in Archie, and their belts are colored incorrectly. Different shades of green for the turtles is also wrong.
Lawson's art is fine but he really isn't a good fit for the Archie universe. I never liked the issues he drew either.

I just noticed Cryin Hound only has 2 arms.

Oh, Jim... why couldn't you remember what he looked like?!?

Where he's positioned, it's hard to tell.

Can anyone explain what Lawson was going for with Wingnut? Way too freaky than need be. (Though, it may bode well, if he draws the next TPB with Wyrm, Scumbug and, of course, the Rat King.) And Man Ray has a weird frog face, too. On the other hand, his Leatherhead isn't too shabby.
I like the positions, the "Oh, crap" looks on the Turtles and the general theme the art goes for. Better luck, next time?

I looooooooooooove this cover! I never did see the first one though, could someone link it (in the best possible quality)?
Same for this one, I'd love hi-res versions of the two covers if they're available. Rich, got 'em?

I can see his left side. He might have combined them or drawn his arm really big for some reason.
That second cover is neat. I never saw that. How come that was never used?

In case anybody didn't know, that Volume 2 cover that is posted on Amazon allows you to zoom in and see some fairly high res details.

A much better cover, and rather creepy. Except, why are Shredder's eyes glowing red? It works, despite it looking like he's a robot or he's a demon.
But, mostly, it reminds me of this:

Aw man that looks so cool! If I didn't already own every issue of the Archie series, I would so pick this up!

I do, and I will :D Something nice about having a TPB version for the bookshelf.
However, $20 for vol 2? We don't know which issues are in it yet but it seems expensive compared to vol 1 which is only $10 on Amazon.

The price isn't the only reason I'm not buying it. I don't have much room for storing comics anymore. It's hard enough finding a place to put the new IDW series.

I hear ya.
I'm just stoked these are being reprinted at all.
I wonder if they'll go a set # of issues per book or if they will consider arcs. The Turnstone arc starts pretty early and lasts a few issues. Same with Shredder's return/Bellybomb/Slash, and then definitely when getting into Japan.
I think the fact that new covers are being drawn, at least for the first few, is exciting. I hope Chris Allan will do a few! One of the reasons I tracked down those Archie Digest reprints of TMNTA were for those new Chris Allan covers :D

It's ironic you mention the digests...how many issues did each of those collect?

7 volumes, each one collecting 3 issues plus some bonus material such as pin-ups, joke comics, and most of the April O'Neil back-up series in the last volume.

So is Idw soliciting art from the mirage guys for the covers, or are these older pieces of art?

I kept thinking this cover looked all too weird to be strictly a Lawson piece. It's clearly got his lines and textures in the inks, but the underlying figures just looked a little wonky to me.
Lawson just posted the pre-colored inked version on his Facebook and noted that Lavigne penciled the piece.

Interesting! Good find.
I am amazed at how dramatically a piece can change between the penciling and the inking when artists with different styles are involved.
