Tentatively out later this year. Mateus Santolouco (TMNT #5 flashbacks) will be co-scripting and doing the art, and Eric Burnham (Splinter Micro) will also be co-scripting.

I'm insanely pumped.

Did we get any sort of summary on what the book would be? Just based on the title, it sounds interesting. I'm a bit behind on the series (only four issues in thus far), but I'm enjoying it thus far. More background shouldn't hurt.

Here's the article: http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=39770

Assistant Editor and "Night of 1000 Wolves" writer Bobby Curnow was the next guest. Speaking about "Battle Beast," a miniseries based on the toys, Curnow said that a rampaging race of aliens comes to Earth seeking artifacts, and it's up to good beasts and one woman who can understand their language to save the planet.

Kevin Eastman will be illustrating the 48-page "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" annual, Curnow said. "He's putting his heart into this," Curnow added.

Curnow announced "Rise of the Foot Clan," a miniseries set for later this year, showing "how the Shredder rose to power and how he came to the current day." It is written by Mattheus Santalouco with art by Eric Burnham.

Okay, so what's this about an annual? I know Peter Laird has the right to publish something like 12 issues a year of original content, but I haven't heard of this annual yet? What is it?

I am glad to see IDW keeping up the mini's and specials. As much as I do like the main series, I do agree that without the specials the series moves too slowly.

With these micros and mini-series they can cover things they don't in the main volume, like the intro of Alopex, Leo fighting the Foot, Splinter and Shredder backstory, or just fun filler adventures.

IDW really is doing a fantastic job keeping this series alive.

That article is riddled with errors (I'm not an assistant editor!!). The correct name of the mini-series is "Secret History of the Foot Clan." Art and story by Mateus Santolouco, with Erik Burnham co-scripting. We'll have covers by Rafael Grampa and CP Wilson.

Though subject to change, all signs point to a 4 issue mini starting in December. I'll try and post our first art for it at the IDW forum next week!

Totally agreed. Erik has Splinter down-pat, his Micro was by far my favorite take on the character. He even beat out Mirage's Splinter, in my mind. That may be a drastic statement given it was only one issue, but IDW's Splinter as a whole has been far more attractive as a character to me than Mirage's was. Not to say that I didn't enjoy Mirage Splinter, I did. But I feel like IDW has given him fresh life that Mirage...well, literally...killed off.

Bobby, you're getting annotations from Peter Laird concerning the Ultimate? AWESOME!

I love the intercutting between past and present, ESPECIALLY when the backstory takes place in feudal Japan! Shredder is going to get some well-deserved back story which has sadly, after 25 years, remain sorely unexplored. I'm somehow more psyched for this than an Eastman drawn turtles issue! IDW has accomplished quite the feat with that one!

If it helps, remember that this is going to be touch upon Shredder's survival up to the present, so it won't ALL take place in old timey Japan. You're also gonna get to see Saki's embarrassing mutton chops from the 70's! I too would be pretty grumpy if I had a dark past like that haunting me...

If you want to keep up-to-date, you should be able to buy them digitally at http://read.idwpublishing.com/.
More info http://forums.thetechnodrome.com/showthread.php?t=38840 and http://forums.thetechnodrome.com/showthread.php?t=37751.

And if you still plan on buying the trade but still want to read them for fairly cheap, IDW has been discounting their issues once the newest once comes out. ie: issue #1 will be $1.99 once issue #2 is released (at $3.99).

Also, you'll probably be able to read issue #1 for free on http://read.idwpublishing.com/ based on the pattern they have already established (Ongoing issue #1, TMNT Infestation #1, and Donatello Micro-Series are all free to read, Donatello sort of breaks the pattern).

I'd counter with maybe she, like the Turtles, has a fuzzy memory of their past lives. I mean only Splinter is 100% certain and Leo gets spurts. So far none of the other Turtles have had flash backs.

If Alopex is Tang Shen I'm not reading anymore. In fact of anymore reincarnatied mutants show up I'm through. I gave it a chance even though I was kind of pissed when the series started, it was marketed as "the original tmnts return to comics", I pre-ordered and forgot about, so it was a blatant lie. That being said I like what they've done so far, including the Fred Wolf characters and reincarnation but if they start adding things like reincarnated Tang Shen and the mutanimals then it'll become one of those things I don't talk about like the next mutation and musical.

I would love something like this: Shredder dies in ancient Japan and the foot somehow preserves his dead body. In modern days Karai, who is his great great great.. grandaughter, uses the worms to clone him. So the Sheredder we've seen so far is actually a clone of the original one.

Previous incarnations have ranged from good (Legend of Koji from the OT), decent (Mirage's Foot Clan origin) to poor (Movie III) with regards to ancient forms of the Foot Clan. I hope that the story begins peaceful with the Clan getting along universally until one man of the Saki family starts to secretly turn against them until he becomes a traitor and becomes the first Shredder or somebody else who goes by a different name yet has a similar role to the Shredder (I prefer this to the Shredder mantle, though I wouldn't be upset if they adopt the Shredder mantle).

i'm not a huge fan of the worms idea either... and i favor the shredder being a mantle over this. it's just that i think that a mantle like the shredder is just too great to pass on unless he dies. and even then... karai or whoever takes it up should be even more threatening than saki. i just think that it's like one of those things like "who else can be superman/batman" kinda thing. bringing saki back... whether it be through magical worms or scientific cloning... is inevitable.

i hope we see more foot and less turtles in this miniseries. it's not everyday we get a foot-centered comic. so i'd prefer less turtles. but idw seems to being just fine with giving us in-depth coverage of supporting characters by the looks of the micro-series.

Not sure if it was discussed in the Leonardo Discussion Thread (http://forums.thetechnodrome.com/showthread.php?t=36207). It must be hierarchical since they appear in the later fight scenes (like issue 12 (http://forums.thetechnodrome.com/showthread.php?t=38435)).

No I meant a modern day human who got turned into a fox-mutant.

I believe she was a fox who got mutated just because of her name. I mean I understand the taking on of a new name once mutated like Bebop and Rocksteady. Yet somehow I feel like taking on the species you've been mutated with as your new name doesn't make as much sense in the long run.

What would make sense is a group of ninja's referring to one of its creations by species because it creates a sort of under the surface distain for the mutants, they aren't people they don't deserve names, but we still need something to call them.

Though personally I like the thought of our newly mutated arctic fox picking that as her name because it was what she remembered being called pre-mutation.

I really hope not. This is what I feared the most when they started the reincarnation thing. I don't want all the mutants to be people that the Turtles know from their past life, nor random reincarnated people.

Regarding her being someone reincarnated. It would make sense since she seems to be held in such high regard by the Foot Clan. Though perhaps the reason why she was created was to fill the void left by whomever that mask wearing women was to the Shredder.

If she does end up being reincarnated, then more than likely she dosn't remember he past life, which if she were to be Tang Shen (which I hope she isn't) would explain why hearing the name Hamato Yoshi wouldn't have affected her

Well, the husband and the sons have been reincarnated as animals (rat and turtles), so it make sense that the wife has been reincarnated as an animal (fox) too. It's a family thing and after all they were all killed by the same people in the same time. This however is the last reincarnation we should see. In the present they catch the white fox and mutate her, but no one knows who she was. When she hears the name Hamato Yoshi something in her mind starts to slowly bring back memories.

I think he was more referring to the feudal era as opposed to the same exact moment in time.

As I think on it further though, it would really sort of diminish the whole Turtle back story if it turns out that Tang Shen is still alive and well. Sure it could make for a happy ending: "The family is reunited albeit as animals!" but it would also mean that the whole motivation behind the training of them to become ninjas and the promise to his dieing wife not to hurt anyone else would lose something.

It would be like if years later Batman discovered that his parents staged the attack in crime alley so that they could get rid of all their responsibilities as parents and return back to their former jetsetting lives as billionaires or Uncle Ben having known full well about Peter's spider powers and faking his own death in order to teach him the ultimate lesson in great power meaning great responsibility.

Yes. Makes it feel too much like a soap opera or Jerry Springer. "And here is your long lost mother! Let's hear what she has to say!?"

Also, the Turtles and Splinter still need that "revenge" angle or that driving force / motivation to keep on going and right the wrongs of the past.

I don't think it would negate their purpose as their lives as a family were cut short and were unable to spend that time together. And who is to say that if it did turn out to be Tang Shen that she would remember the events the same way as Splinter. Remember we have only been told the story from his perspective, so it is how he remembered it. Sometimes ones memories obscure the facts.

Are you suggesting that perhaps Tang Shen was happy that the Foot Clan murdered her for Yoshi's betrayal:

"Thank god they ended my life so abruptly, now he'll have to take responsibily for his damn sons instead of going out every night assassinating high profile targets with his boys club." ~ Revisionist History Tang Shen

I'm sorry, I understand that the memory's that we have seen are just His Story (heh heh History... Get it) but I find it hard to believe that the loving Father that we have so far seen Splinter to be would have remembered that moment any differently. In fact if he were to have some sort of revisionist memory of how those events unfolded that too would also cheapen and negate the turtles.

Look I'm all for new and exciting stories involving the TMNT but I don't think perverting the whole "All fathers have love for their sons," thing by having that same father have murdered the mother or some other crazy permutation based upon what you're suggesting about how Hamato Yoshi remembers things is not a good place for them to start.

Cowabunga Carl
09-20-2012, 10:31 AM
I just think people are stuck on their own ideas of what is "right and wrong". That they aren't open to new things because they want the tried and true. I'm not saying Yoshi killed her, or in fact if she is even dead.

Maybe if she is back Shredder has twisted her memories into making it seem like things happened differently. There are a lot of ways it could play out. I don't want to see it happen but I'm not against it happening and wouldn't call it quits.

As we have seen with the Turtles they don't remember their past only Splinter. Maybe it would be the same for her. Maybe Shredder has twisted her memories into believing that they were in love and Yoshi killed her and now has their sons.

Like I said there is a lot that could be done. Just to say that it is horrible and would undermine everything isn't rational. Until we see what Tom and Kevin have come up with I'm not ready to burn them at the stake.

FoxZerro
09-20-2012, 11:32 AM
What you have just suggested is very different from her remembering things differently. Being told lies about her past in order to fuel her into a rage to get revenge and reclaim her sons is not the same as her having a different memory of how things went down.

Also I'm not saying its horrible and would undermine everything. I am a big proponet of if a story is good it should be told. However, I do feel the death of Tang Shen is a big part of the origin of the Ninja Turtles and think it would be a difficult thing to alter and maintain the same level of importance.

I don't just say this to say this. I say this as a person who lived through Gwen Stacy having a secret affair with Norman Osbourne and giving birth to his twin children and somehow never mentioning it to Peter Parker.

While I do want Tang Shen to be reincarnated--I find the idea of fate or whatever reincarnating an entire family except for the one woman icky--I'd much rather it be as a human rather than as yet another mutant--preferrably one who doesn't necessarily wish to be involved with Splinter and the rest; it'd be a way to explore the concept of how much they all wish to let their past lives inform their current ones, in a way that isn't hampered by having a foregone conclusion.

Or heck--perhaps more interesting, despite my previous comment--reincarnate her as a man.

I would be willing to read Alopex as Tang Shen of done right, but for whatever reason, I feel it makes more sense that if she's reincarnated at all, maybe she's Tang Amiya or however its spelled. Or hell, maybe even Pimiko. While I enjoy Karai as his daughter (i have to admit, for whatever reason, even though I'm pretty sure I read it before her introduction in the 4Kids show, I swore that Karai was indeed supposed to be his daughter in the Mirage series. It wasn't until years layer I learned she was supposed to be his cousin or whatever), Pimiko is the only confirmed (or semi confirmed at least) actual descendant of Saki, it would make sense to include her somehow. Hell, didn't her and Raph kinda have a thing? If Alopex is Ninjara and Pimiko combined, that would be kinda interesting... Just thinking out loud here, but I definitely can't wait for this.

Tang Shen is the TMNT equivalent of Uncle Ben. Leave her dead.

I think you're drastically overstating her role in the story. Take away Uncle Ben, and Spider-Man becomes a drastically different character. Tang Shen, on the other hand, does nothing to inform the character of the turtles, or Splinter, or Shredder--heck, all she does in the original story is slightly add context to Yoshi and Nagi, who are themselves more props than characters, and which you could easily eliminate or alter without changing the overall story. Even in the 4Kids toon, in which both she and Yoshi are given greater significance, she was only added as an additional detail in a backstory that had already established all the beats it needed to--far from something that is essential to the characters involved.

As for this incarnation? They don't remember her. Her presence or abscence changes nothing of Splinter's or the turtles' motivations, and her return would be perfectly in line with the established universe's rules, unlike Uncle Ben's.

Which makes me wonder: even if it never happens, have Splinter or the turtles even considered the possibility that Tang Shen might also have been reincarnated? It would seem like something they'd bring up.

do you realize that if it were not for tang shen in the idw incarnation... splinter would be a hot-headed ninja that would've been disgraced earlier in his foot clan career and thereby never would've been this great warrior. and if tang shen never existed... yoshi wouldn't have had his sons to get killed... therefore (i'm assuming you believe the reincarnation bit and those WERE indeed the turtles in their past lives)... there would be no turtles.

take away tang shen from the mirage universe... the hamato/oroku feud would not exist. yoshi wouldn't have fled to america (for killing nagi in his rage)... and the shredder wouldn't seek revenge for his brother's death. splinter would still be a rat in japan. and though the turtles may still have been mutated... their characterization wouldn't be the same. they would've been freaks hiding without knowing any lick of ninjitsu.

chain-reactions can be a pain, i know. but simply removing her from the mythos can have serious repercussions.

Cowabunga Carl
09-23-2012, 06:09 PM
In every universe you can replace her with something different and it still works. Like FW did. There is no Tang Shen and the origin works just fine. She is in 4kids but not a driving factor. So the argument that she is key for the Turtles to be what they are doesn't really work unless it is over all mediums/interpretations.

I think it actually makes the story more interesting if she is brought back. I mean it only makes sense that all the players are back and not just a select few.

Jester
09-23-2012, 06:16 PM
I disagree, Cowabunga Hob. It would get obnoxious to bring back every dead character via reincarnation. It was my biggest gripe when it was shown to be the source of the Turtles' "ninja powers": This opens the flood gates for EVERY character to be the reincarnated ___________.

The only good that could come out of Alopex is Shen is the possibility of her redemption, but even then, how do you reconcile the fact that the mutant fox and rat are a long dead married Japanese couple without things getting a bit...well....creepy?

Cowabunga Carl
09-23-2012, 06:19 PM
While not a big fan of the reincarnated bit of the origin it is part of this universe now. So to say that the Turtles are the only characters who are/can be doesn't make sense. I mean if this is about the family having a second chance wouldn't it make more sense for the whole family to be back?

What if Shen is April?

Also, Alopex is apparently a preteen.

http://i46.tinypic.com/1z1u6hl.jpg

The turtles and Splinter are a special case. Yoshi prayed he'd have a chance at revenger against Saki. He didn't pray for his wife to be returned to him after being dead, what was it, eleven years after her death?

Jester

Cowabunga Carl
09-23-2012, 06:35 PM
See it makes sense that April is Shen, I mean a lot more then Apolex. I do think we will see Shen show up again somehow though. They went out of their way to make a whole issue about it, it wasn't a passing mention. So it doesn't surprise me that people are talking about the possibility.

As for Splinter not praying about it so it wont happen, I don't buy it. I don't think it quite works that way. Maybe the fact that those five were brought back together, but not that only those who pray come back.

Jester
09-23-2012, 06:47 PM
To be fair Carl, they are stretching EVERYTHING in this universe. Things that took one issue in previous incarnations are spread across 4 issue arcs. Such is decompressed storytelling.

Cowabunga Carl
09-23-2012, 06:52 PM
It is going to be interesting to see if this mini-series needs 4 issues or if it is going to feel a little thin. I really hope each issue is amazing. I mean even with the decompressed story so far the series has been great.

The more I think about the April angle the more I actually kind of like it. It adds a whole new take on the Casey/April relationship too.

this could work... although i prefer if it did not. and yes i do like the idea that this would mean she's at peace. but if she was at peace... wouldn't that mean april is not tang shen? at peace would mean that her life was fulfilled with nothing left to do if she was given a second chance. judging by the way she died... i don't think she's done that.
if she was reincarnated as april... her falling for casey would just make her fickle and superficial in my eyes... and therefore less likeable. after all... that rat WAS YOUR HUSBAND whom you've had four kids with and literally loved to death. now that that same husband is a rat... you fall for a normal human being? i can't see that happening.

but i guess you're right about tang shen not being needed for certain universes. but mirage's and idw's universes need a tang shen.

reincarnation isn't about second chances. The idea is that you keep coming back tell you get it right. it would make sense for her to come back to show her husband and sons that they don't need the revenge. That buy perpetuating this it is only keeping them stuck in the cycle.

I don't think it makes her fickle at all. Tang Shen is a past life. It is over and she has moved on. It isn't who she is anymore. Maybe that is what Splinter needs. To know that Shen has moved on and become someone new so he can too.

if you put it this way... then yes i 100% agree with you. i get what you mean here. and if she does get reincarnated into april... then i hope they handle her like this.
but i guess i just prefer her dead and april be her own self with no such importance but rather a friend they came across and eventually become "family".

^ This. I've always love the "Family By Adoption" aspect of the TMNT. The whole reincarnation bit rewrites that and makes them the same blood family, just in a different time and in different bodies. To add a reincarnated Teng O'Neil to the mix further weakens this dynamic.

I think the whole reincarnated thing takes a lot away from them as a whole. However that is how this universe seems to be working. I'd love for it all to be a "dream" but I don't think it will. So instead I think we need a way to wrap up the whole thing and then push past it.

I think the only way to do that is to have Shen somehow show up and let Yoshi know she is at peace and that she wants him to move on also. I think the April angle is the best way to do that at the moment.

couldn't they just have her appear in one of splinter's meditations or something? i'm sure there are other ways that she can appear without having april be some sort of messenger host for tang shen. i'd prefer april to be herself.

by the way... i think this thread is starting to become a "Tang Shen reincarnation angle" thread. we're straying away from the foot.

Don't worry...it's been taken care of.

You know what always seems to get swept under the rug: in most incarnations of the Turtles, Hamato Yoshi WAS a Foot Soldier. We see them as the evil faceless minions, but they can't be all bad if the supposedly honorable Hamato Yoshi was among their ranks.

According to Splinter in the FW explanation of the origin.

Cowabunga Carl
09-23-2012, 07:51 PM
Even in IDW they talk about how the Foot didn't go to extremes. It was after Saki took over is when Yoshi walked away from the clan. So it is possible that we could see the forming and the rules they set up, then how Saki perverted the clan.

Lampy
09-23-2012, 07:53 PM
this miniseries should explain that then... most likely taking place after splinter's micro flashbacks. i think saki killed his sensei and yelled at the rest asking "who else wants some?!".:D i am looking forward to seeing what missions they did after saki took over though... pillaging perhaps?

Jester
09-23-2012, 07:57 PM
I wanna say the Mirage book is very vague about the evil nature of the Foot. Doesn't it say that the clan cultivated and used Saki's hate and bitterness in it's training him? Almost makes Saki seem like he never had a chance, at least there. In IDW, he's totally a bad apple who spoils the clan.

Cowabunga Carl
09-23-2012, 08:03 PM
Yeah Mirage Shredder was pretty much screwed from the get go. He had no way of getting away in that continuity. In it, it seemed like the Foot were a lot more harsh and willing to use hate.

IDW he started off as a complete douche. It is his fault that the clan turned "evil". Or at least that's how it seems.

yea in the mirage books... shredder was trained to be evil. almost like the whole clan was evil from the start. hell, it made yoshi seem more evil than the other incarnations make him out to be.

in the idw incarnation... it seems to point to the whole domino effect that saki causes on the whole clan. kind of the whole polar opposite.

looks to be that way already. yoshi and saki's old sensei seemed very honorable and had the "dumbledore" vibe to him. so unless the miniseries shows that after their sensei died... the clan started a mini "city at war" kind of thing... it looks like saki was the rotten apple that spoiled the bunch. guess it was OT borrowed.

Wow you go away for a weekend and things go crazy...

I do not like the idea of Tang Shen coming back as April. I know this has been stated by other already, but I don't think its necessary. I think we have plenty in terms of development for these characters that it isn't something thats needs to be added to the pot. It seems like an idea that would be put into a comic book years later when things are beginning to stagnate. Not something you do in the second year. Could it happen eventually sure why not, but now does not seem like the time.

Regarding the Foot, they can't all be bad. I keep thinking about issue 46 of Tales of the TMNT Vol. 2 that kid was just trying to provide for his family. In terms of the evil performed by the foot it always feels like it was done after Saki has joined them. Even in Mirage, Hamato Yoshi had disrespected the clan by killing another member and in not committing Sepuku (Honorable Suicide, sorry I always loved that they made that distinction in the first issue) and instead fleeing he led the Foot Clan to cultivate the anger within Nagi's younger brother in order to have him take out the traitor.

Either way I'm really looking forward to this mini-series and more information on the Foot Clan in the IDW-verse

I think this post was totally overlooked, but this is an awesome interview! This is easily my most anticipated IDW stuff since they launched issue #1. I'm a little concerned about the new designs and how they'll translate in the interiors, but it still looks pretty solid. And everything else looks absolutely amazing, especially the feudal Japan stuff.

I'm pretty surprised how much they revealed in this interview. Not huge spoilers, but I didn't think they reveal such specific details. Hints at immortality. The set-up of the story with Dr. Patrick Miller. Tragedy in the face of doing the honorable thing. The origin of the Foot clan splintering off from a previous "Yuu clan." Not really digging the pink, but maybe those aren't the final colors?

And they just love constantly teasing us with that mystical fox, don't they? With Santolouco's art and Burnham's writing, this is going to be at the top of the IDW TMNT, I'm sure! And beyond Dooney's time travel issue, the origins of the Foot clan have been mainly untouched, so this is really stomping new ground here. Super exciting.

They're going to have to cross paths eventually (the two almost separate plot lines), which I think might actually lead to "bad-ass Krang if he had been a Mirage character" teaming up with "Almost Mirage Shredder" to take over the world. They've been competitors up to this point, but I think that Fugitoid is going to realize soon that working for someone like Shredder is just as bad as working for Krang, even if they're enemies at this point. Seems to me like the two are simply aware that one another are doing the same thing. They're both formidable enough in my opinion that they might form an alliance at some point. I've kind of felt that is what the comic has been building up to all this time.

Yup, it is unfortunate but it is affecting everyone, not just IDW. It is affecting us too, and we are a Canadian chemical distributor. They are diverting containers to other ports but now those ports are getting congested. Hopefully they will resume labour talks after the holidays and put an end to this, but there are contigency plans in place and at least we will be getting the issues eventually.
ILA-USMX Contract Talks End Abruptly
Contract discussions broke off abruptly today between the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) and the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX). Today’s negotiations were part of a last-minute effort to reach a compromise between the parties over a contract that has already been extended once for 90 days and now expires on December 29. One of the last sticking points is regarding container royalties. The ILA stated they would postpone the strike until February 1, 2013, if USMX would agree to take the topic off the table. When USMX refused, the talks abruptly ended which puts the ILA on course for a December 29 strike.
If an ILA strike occurs, it will effectively shut down ports along the East and Gulf Coasts of the US. With those ports shut down, Canadian and US West Coast ports will be backlogged with overflow cargo, as well as shipments subject to Force Majeure. Carriers are also threatening additional surcharges.

Yeah, there hasn't been nearly enough of those in IDW TMNT.

Do I sense a hint of sarcasm spice in your Mirage Purist stew?

I agree unless you are being sarcastic. Theres seems to be a lot of people here that absolutely hate when anything from the OT is used in the comic. I for one enjoy it since the writers usually improve it from the old cheesy style of the show.

If I read the mirage comic when it first came out I'm pretty sure I would hate the OT more than anything.

Finally, april has some sex appeal again.

I was neither aware there were a lot of people waiting for her to resume such (was she ever sexy?) or that there is some kind pre-requisite that she have any.

April's whole thing is she's like a big sister or den mother to the Turtles... not a sex kitten.

I totally understand why. As much as I loved the OT as a kid. It was really cheesy and not as awesome as the comic. I just think its lame when people complain about something before they have a chance to read it. Just because something came from that show doesnt mean its going to be an exact replica. I dont think Bebop and Rocksteady in the IDW universe will be running around acting like idiots.

I think people are more upset that there's so very many silly OT things and not many mirage.

People keep piping up with, "But it's so nice and so much fun to see all these Fred Wolf things changed into serious and cool things in IDW TMNT!"

I don't dispute that it's probably possible to change (in some cases detrimentally to the character... for example, if they remove Bebop and Rocksteady's stupidity, they cease to be Bebop and Rocksteady because that's their thing... and yet if they don't remove it, why would you want them in your supposedly serious comic?) Fred Wolf elements and alter them so as to make less campy or less inherently kiddy. I don't, it's possible.

By the same light, is it probably possible for a team that was so inclined to make an ultra-serious, no-nonsense revival version of Grape Ape? Of Marvin the Martian? Of Popeye? Of course. But why would I want to sit down and see that?

I'd rather calories be burned coming up with new ideas and characters than spending so much time and energy trying to reverse engineer goofy ones into not-so-goofy ones. I know there's folks around here that value simple nostalgia and "Ooooh, I can't wait to see who shows up from the Fred Wolf show next! Let it be the Punk Frogs !" kind of twists over anything else, but I'm only interested in pound for pound the best possible storytelling and characters.

Because it is fun to see old familiar characters get rebooted and it creates a draw for new readers. I like new ideas too and there will no doubt be plenty of those. I just dont think the ot references are so numerous as to even worry that the writers are out of ideas.

Pretty much yeah. Making bebop and rocksteady more ignorant instead of stupid may work but how the hell are they gonna name them bebop and rocksteady without it sounding completely stupid and out if place? But I get your whole point, people wanted to have the mutimals in ths universe. I mean why? What purpose would that serve besides making the whole series more cartoonish.

What if they dont name them in the comic. Yeah we would know they are Bebop and Rocksteady but was Slash ever mentioned by name? I dont see the big deal in changing their characters. The same people complaining about OT characters being in the comic because they are too cartoony complain that changing them is pointless? Theres no pleasing these people. Whats so wrong with having an actual threatening version of Bebop and Rocksteady...they can still be slightly dumb without being complete morons. Whats wrong with having a Technodrome that is an actual deathstar like threat instead of a generic castle greyskull type hideout. Whats wrong with this menacing version of Krang? Why is taking things from the OT any different than taking things from the Mirage comic? I think the writers are doing an excellent job at combining things from the different universes while still putting a new twist on it.

I removed my post because I wanted to reconsider how I posted it. (:

The reader's digest version:

The best of the concepts from the entirety of the TMNT universe can be used in ways that are silly or serious, and whether Mirage or Archie or the cartoon iterations are the ones that are most identifiable to one as "the right one," that holds true. The Triceratons and Cudley the Cowlick, to name two. I can certainly imagine "dinosaurs from space" as a silly, cartoony, comedic gimmick. And I can imagine a giant, grotesque, disembodied head that can transport things through space by swallowing them as something that'd work in a serious story.

It's an action franchise, so comedy or drama can be turned up or down and things can still work -- like Bebop & Rocksteady; stupid doesn't necessarily equal less dangerous. (Less dangerous was a byproduct of the cartoon.)

New concepts are tricky, since so much has been done many fans would ask "this thing you're presenting as new is a lot like this other thing with a franchise history -- why didn't you just use that?" There's a lot to mine. Why not use a toy that's there?

It all comes down to the concept and liking what you like. If you associate exhibit A with something you want to keep in the silly box, it will never work for you in a serious way. And vice versa.

The post just got me thinking, as a writer -- I took down my other comments (and these are rather unfocused, I admit) but I didn't want to sound like I was saying liking or not liking a particular iteration was right or wrong.

I've never been a fan of the OT. Honestly I didn't know what the hell neutrinos were til this comic came so l really don't care about changing the characters. They do mention slash by name, I like the new version of Krang and I just said making Bebop and Rocksteady ignorant instead of stupid would work. The names Bebop and Rocksteady are silly and I don't see how they'd get those names. Having unnamed versions just wouldn't work.

Lots of ways to get a nickname that sticks, and lots of ways to pick a nickname.

Think about internet handles; everyone has a reason for picking the one they do, but for an outside observer, without any additional info, some handles can seem to not make sense without explanation.

I really loved this issue, I like the art style.
But....I have mixed emotions about krang being the (Iron Demon), I was wondering if they were going to make another demon shredder like in the 2k3 series, but I thought Krang's exosuit was fitting. I am just glad it didn't look nearly as rediculous as it did in the OT. I am hoping they will use more mirage material in the future.

Great issue overall, really enjoyed the art work and style.

What a great story!

Oh wait I didn't get my copy today because my flipping LCS didn't put it in my pull and hold like I asked them and they sold all the copies on the floor. I am fuming, I only get 3 comics, 4 if there is a micro-series going. I see people come in and grabbing their p&h's with like 20 books. This isn't the first time either, I am about ready to find another outlet...
