Okay? I like the cover, read through all that mess, and still don't understand. Is it an 'end of year' review of the comics so far? A completely different comic based on whatever the hell Kevin wants to write about? What? It SOUNDS interesting, but I'd like to hear more about what the hell it is.

An Annual is basically a longer story. Sometimes there's multiple stories. Some are set in the past, some in the present. But they're generally yearly One shots that bridge a gap between storylines.

The TMNT Annual will be out in October. It's FULL story by Kevin Eastman, with Tom on script (as opposed to co-story by Eastman/Waltz). Kevin on full art duties. It's a 48 page stand-alone story set in the IDW universe.

It's basically a caper gone awry, with various criminal factions in NYC vying for power, with the Turtles caught in the middle (especially Raph and Casey... c'mon it is an Eastman story!).

Very psyched for it!

If I remember they went like thirty years without an uncanny X-men annual then released one and then it said "to be continued in captain America super soldier #1" at the end. Annuals are pretty much one shots that are intended to be released yearly but rarely are. The story doesn't have to stick to anything in particular. And holy ****ing **** ****ing mother of ****ing **** is that the savate guy? Well...a savate guy since the other ones dead.

You and I both! Having Eastman at the reins in both art and writing is going to be great, and something TMNT fans have longed for since the (in my opinion) shoddy and "extreme" Body Count.

Here's an interview with Kevin Eastman about the issue: http://geek-news.mtv.com/2012/07/13/sdcc-2012-exclusive-kevin-eastman-tmnt-idw/

Haha, they are dead wrong in their intro paragraph. They delegated Laird to writing and Eastman all the art in the original TMNT book. HA!

As a hardcore Donatello fan, I understand why Eastman centers his Annual around Raphael and Casey...I'd do the same thing with Donatello if I was in his shoes. Although, I hope the favoritism doesn't creep through too much. I don't want it to be a little too Raph. (I had to do it).

Not to be the first to complain but mousers or rock soldiers involved in this fight? That faction feels a little left out. But still its only the cover and Turtles + Casey vs. Unnamed Savateurs vs. Foot vs. Dragons! And Casey and Raph issues are awesome when not overdone. Raph is close to my least favorite turtle(that being Leo) but even I won't deny I look forward to issues where him and Casey are beating the crap out of people together.

Raphael and Casey find themselves in the middle of a criminal caper gone awry that touches the lives of many of their friends... and enemies! Double-cross upon double-cross leads the Turtles to the heart of the NYC criminal underworld. Various factions jockey for power, but at the end of the day only one can end up on top. But the Mirage Turtles showed no remorse in killing Foot Soldiers. I wonder if this will be brought up at all in this annual.

Granted, it is Kevin frikin' Eastman. So I'll be willing to buy it regardless.

But I just don't know the comics business model well enough to know whether or not 48-page issues tend to sell for that much these days. I was expecting something closer to $6.

Yeah, I know, but I figure the cost of putting a single comic together probably costs a certain amount that isn't necessarily proportionate to the actual number of pages. For instance, I wouldn't expect a 15 page comic book to cost exactly half as much as a 30 page comic book. I figure most of the cost lies in just getting the darn thing printed and bound together. I certainly understand that page number ought to have some impact on price, but it just doesn't seem like the costs would necessarily double.

Anyhoo... I've said more about this than I ever cared to write. Like I said, I'm just an idiosyncratic comic buyer ("gimmie my Turtles, Mega Man, and Ghostbusters"!) who hasn't followed the changes in the market over the last decade. I'm also a bit of tightwad when it comes to buying DVDs, video games, and comic books. There was once a time when I even thought the Mirage comics were expensive at $3.25.

Bottom line is that I'll almost certainly end up buying this one regardless. It's Kevin frikin' Eastman after all.

This is accurate, though it goes through another filter of Kevin at the end. As opposed to the ongoing, which is pretty much how Kevin described it in the article: Kevin and Tom talk general story, several arcs ahead of time, and then Kevin looks at the final script when the time comes, with maybe a small tweak or so.

Annual story is all Kevin!

This is the only real new news to arrive about the Kevin annual for about 6 months now.

It's virtually impossible that I won't love every panel of this thing but personally -- even as huge of a duotone fan as I am -- I was kind of looking forward to seeing what straight-up Kevin Eastman pencilled/inked art would look like in a full-length comic accompanied by cutting edge digital coloring. I hope to see those shades of gray ink digitally turned in DuoShade-like tones. Unless he is using real DuoShade already.

Kevin Eastman did say that he IS using DuoShade for this issue.

Since Eastman is also drawing the entire 48-page issue, he still prefers to do it the old-fashioned way. "My preference is still blue pencil, pencil and ink and Sharpie and toothbrush for spatter and that's it," he said. There's one more special tool he's using for this issue -- a discontinued paper stock called Grafix DuoShade. "It's just a texturing paper where you pencil and ink your page like normal, but sort of built into the paper is a hidden texture that when you apply a chemical to it, it brings the texture out," Eastman said.

He also mentioned somewhere (I cannot remember where, maybe the Chasing Turtles interviews) that he bought up all the DuoShade he could find when it was discontinued and still has a small supply for his personal use.

Yeah, I remember him saying this. And looking closer at the page (with Photoshop) I seem to notice DuoShade's lines. Very good!

Looks like this could blend right into the Raphael Micro. Obviously "East Side Story" is a pop cultural reference to the musical West Side Story, so maybe there will be scenes inspired by that play. Looks like a classic story that makes a great alternative to the popular Raph/Casey stories, and I'd like to see more depth with the other Turtles.

The variant cover for this is a 25 copy Retailer Incentive which was solicited as an “Eastman Layout blueprint edition."

I have this on pre-order and am very much looking forward to seeing how it turns out. Should be pretty hard to come by at 1:25.

does anyone know how this will look like? is it just his blueprint layout of the colored cover? or an entirely different cover?

From Bobby on the IDW forums:

"Yes! The Annual was just wrapped and sent to print on Friday, for Oct. 31st release. It's a completely new story, set in the IDW universe. Story by Kevin, script by Tom, all art by Kevin. It was originally set to be 48 pages, but Kevin couldn't resist adding TWELVE more pages. SIXTY PAGES.

This made my life, as editor trying to get the book out on time, miserable, but man... they make an already good book so much better. It's a crazy, madcap story. Really curious what people will think."

Oh, and he added this little nugget of info:

"Annual takes place sometime after TMNT #12, before TMNT #15. Let's say after TMNT #14, but like a lot of this type of stuff, it probably doesn't hold up to perfect scrutiny. "

So, he added a nice 12 pages to the already large annual. I guess if you gotta come back to the series for the first time in a long time with art, might as well make it a long read. I won't complain, that's for sure.

There are multiple pre-order comic book sites out there...just Google "TMNT Annual 2012" and you'll find them. Also, ebay shows some listings for pre-order. You can also wait until release day and just get it at the IDW online Shop (https://shop.idwpublishing.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=ninja+turtle).

All of the past TMNT Jetpack Exclusives have been either $15 or $20 each so I'm sure these will be right in line with that. As for cover material, they're using the same cover stock as was used on the Color Classics Jetpack Exclusives (which is a matte finish). According to Jetpack, "It takes a pencil real nice." ;)
