View Full Version : You think the 1987 Shredder was more of a lackey back then

The video games, toy commercials, and other media made Shred out to be a big bad villain. But now that I am older, I rewatched the early seasons of the OT and I realised Shredder was basically Krang's sidekick and errand boy. Most of the evil schemes on the show were cooked up by Krang. Krang thinks of an evil plan and sends Shredder out to carry it out.
It's like the same deal with Darth Vader and Sidious. Vader was a lackey following Sidious's orders, and yet, Vader is one of the most popular villains in movies.

Yeah, it bothered me that Shredder was basically to Krang what Bebop & Rocksteady were to him. But he was still a good villian.

I agree. He is still an interesting badguy.

Yeah, it's true, but I still love Shredder. The only thing I don't like about him is that every episode he runs off "curse you, turtles!" I know it's a show, but it still irks me as I believe he would win. :tgrin:

You guys do realize there were many episodes where Shredder says he wants to betray Krang, right?

I remember one time, in Mutagen Monster.
Wasn't Shredder the one who gave the orders instead of Krang in Season 1? As I recall, when the Technodrome went to Dimension X at the end of Season 1, Krang declared himself absolute master just because he was in Dimension X and that's when he told Shredder "You will do my bidding from now on".
Shredder says a couple times he takes orders from no one. He said it that time at the end of season 1 and also another time in season 10.

I love in Four Musketurtles when Krang throw things after Shredder. :)
Well, obviously, Krang was the brains of the outfit.

I think he was more of the right hand man then a lackey. That's Bebop and Rocksteady.

I always thought of Shredder and Krang as equals whether they would actually dare to admit it though is another matter. They both have an ego and pride and have similar yet different goals and roles. Krang monitors his partner, gives tech assistance, and coplots. Shredder takes the field to implement thier plan not Krang's plan. Its like Shredder is the hand and Krang is the glove. They are an unlikely partnership that works( otherwise one would have succeeded in disposing of the other eventually). They create evil, humor, and interesting plots operating as a classic team of villainy.

Krang dominates season 4, that's probably why he's the last boss in the "Fall of the Foot Clan" video game. Shredder's probably supposed to dominate, being the last boss in most TMNT video games.

I grew up watching the 80s TMNT, I was about 7 or 8 when the show first started airing. Yeah Shredder in the show was more of a joke than a real threat, but to the audience the show was aimed at (mostly preteen children) I look back on him as formidable. So I think it accomplished what it needed to. Of course, that in no way holds up when viewing it today :)
While we don't know all of the details yet, I'm glad that Shredder will be his own man this time around in the Nick 2012 series. He's not an errand boy for an alien superpower such as Krang. I can't wait to see how it unfolds.

And in the cartoon, he's not even in control of his robot Foot Soldiers, he has to get Krang's permission and he more often than not got turned down.
Krang/Shredder's roles flip flopped all the time, yeah in S1 Shredder made the rules and iN S2 it was Krang who ahd control but after that they pretty much were both the main villains and both plotted/didn't care about each other.

That's much a season 2 plot.
