View Full Version : Secret of the Ooze Ending

As a child I didn't notice anything other than Super Shredder looking awesome, but as I got older I realized that the ending was really anti-climactic. They could've done so much more. So I guess what I'm asking is this: How would you improve the ending?
A friend and I were talking about it and thought it would've been much better to have the turtles get their asses kicked on top the docks. Then move the fight below and have them lure Shredder into breaking the pillars until it collapses so it looks like they actually defeat him as a part of that whole "master of himself and his environment" thing.
Anyone else have any ideas?

Fair enough, I was just kinda going for a "what if" sort of situation. Like how would you have done it. Just for fun

I always took it as Shredder died of stress to his body from the mutation. Like his heart gave out from the strain of supporting his new body. I agree it could have used more ass kicking, ala the first film, but oh well. I do like the idea of a fight on the docks first and then it going under. I think they could have fixed this problem having them fight Shredder before he transforms, showing they could now take him on, and then once he's mutated he's unstoppable. People would be less disappointed if they at least engaged him in combat.

I really like the idea of fighting him pre-mutation
I always took it as Shredder died of stress to his body from the mutation. Like his heart gave out from the strain of supporting his new body. But in Next Mutation Shredder is still alive and no longer Super Shredder.

Yeah but what makes Next Mutation canon to the films other then being live action?

I always thought the ending was dumb.
"Oh no, Shredder drank the ooze, now he's Super Shredder!!!!"
"Oh wait, now he's dead...."

I'm guessing the reason they decided to end it like that was partially because the first movie already had the Turtles fight Shredder.

wut is dumber, IMO, is the fact that they actually filmed the whole thing without casey.

Right, but you figure they have to fight him again, seeing as how is in the movie.

Casey Jones is best when he takes down ordinary street criminals, not Shredder.

I agree the ending of SOTO is super anti-climactic. They ramp up that movie so much and then it just stops. I look at the ending as a lot of missed opportunities. Most notably when Shredder holds the girl hostage and threatens to dump the ooze on her. I have no idea how you explain that. This is last of the mutagen... I'm going to waste it by pouring it on some random pedestrian and hoping that once mutated she attacks you and not me.
Plus if its the same ooze that Perry used before couldn't it also be tainted and thus couldn't they also have used the retro-mutagen on her.
Its such a weird moment, even as a child I was confused.
On topic my What If of the ending has them staying at the battle grounds where they give Tokka and Rahzar the doughnuts. I'm sure there were fire extinguishers there that could have added the necessary Carbon Dioxide to finish the process. Then you have Shred's take the mutagen become Super and the Turtles get schooled so they have to beat a retreat, eventually ending up at the docks and having the movie end similar to how it already does with him being crushed to death.
Though I have to admit I love Spitfire's take on his body giving out because of the mutation. I would prefer if you have Perry say something along the lines of "His body won't be able to take the strain of his mutation for much longer," Then Don comes up with the idea to just stall until his body eventually fails.

but he can still help the turtles take down the foot .
Yeah but what makes Next Mutation canon to the films other then being live action? The Turtles living in the train station, Shredder cutting off part of Splinter's ear.

I would have forced Super Shredder to jump all the way on top of the pier, unleash a tube of TCRI ooze, and then fight using the sword found in the Playmates figure, and that sword should have contained an anti-mutation ability. This would have been followed by several minutes of serious fighting. At one point Super Shredder could have turned up to three of the Turtles into pet shop size turtles, leaving one Turtle to rescue by lifting him high in the air and then crashing below the pier, where the force would have later caused Super Shredder to crush himself to death. That hero would then have retrieved the TCRI canister and then restore the other turtles to their proper size. The second movie was about five minutes shorter than the first, and those five minutes should have been put to use! And it's sad that not only the Turtles don't use their weapons, but they don't even use a silly weapon like those found in the original cartoon as well! Even Rocksteady and Bebop would have done a better job trying to attack them. And best of all, it shows the TRUE Secret of that Ooze!
Ultimately, I feel that a live action sequel just a year after the last one was a bit too soon as it gave the crew a limited amount of time to finish it all, and the quick ending probably showed that the deadline was the next day, so they just had to find the quickest way out. If they simply moved SoTO's release back to summer instead of spring (and catching the peak season for movies of this genre), those few months could have been enough to give us the proper ending, while still having well over a year and a half for the third movie. That's why I have no problem having the 2014 movie delayed.

I've said this before but it does irk me that in none of the movies do the turtles beat the villain themselves. Splinter defeated Shredder in the first, Shredder defeated himself in the second, Whit killed Walker in part three and the cgi movie had April, Casey and Kari push the generals into the portal.:ohwell:

or maybe they think the vanilla ice dance is too cool to miss out.

The Turtles living in the train station, Shredder cutting off part of Splinter's ear.
I guess but it wasn't really planned. Even if that was the intention of the series the fact they decided to bring Shredder back after he was clearly dead doesn't mean he didn't die at the end of SOOT. And did they even address this? Cause as I remember Shredder was played off as some crazy homeless guy who ends up helping the turtles at one point because Dragon Master or whatever screwed him over. Maybe I'm wrong there I haven't seen the series in a very long time.

Kevin Nash/Super-Shredder JackKnife Power Bombs all 4 turtles off the pier and into the water, does the same thing to Keno for good measure, Chokeslams Vanilla Ice, throws up the Wolfpac sign, proclaims "nWo 4 Life," and goes home to cash his big, fat paycheck and brush his hair.
Way better than what we got. And yeah, why were the TMNT always unable to finish the bad guys off at the end? In all 3 movies they stand there cracking jokes and looking clueless while someone else wins the fight for them, then they high-3 and "Cowabunga" like *they* did somethin'. The hell?

It probably has something to do with keeping them kid friendly characters. If you start having the Turtles kill people then the parents get all upset. The kids I don't know how they would react

Next Mutation is not in canon with the movies. I don't know why people keep insisting it is. Train station/Splinter thing, who cares? Mark Hamil voices The Joker in a multitude of Batman products, does that make everything canon to Batman TAS? No.

^i dont care abt next mutation... its not official.
It's no more less official than any other version of the franchise.
Well in the script the Turtles DO at least attempt to attack Super Shredder. Mike whaps him with his chucks but they don't affect him. The Turtles then complain saying something like "Aw, c'mon! Strong AND fast?!" and the rest is pretty much the same.
How would I improve the ending? Maybe try mutating Vanilla Ice! Or at least have him be the victim of a hostage situation. j/k
The reality of the situation is that when a movie has a problem in it's 3rd ACT, the issue really lies in the earlier ACTS. If they were to truly fix the ending they would have had to change other substantial parts of the movie as well. The whole premise of the movie was rather flawed. Shredder's motivation didn't make sense. Revenge? How will the Foot get their money from revenge? And the Turtles didn't have any goal or purpose rather than finding a new home, which was solved too quickly.
