View Full Version : Who should take over art duties for IDW?

Not that we haven't been discussing it, but I thought we should put it to a poll.

I'm going with Santolouco. He's already been featured in the ongoing, and once he's done with his Foot Clan mini, I think he should get the full time gig.

i voted for Santolouco as well. his work on the #5 flashbacks were great. and i think he'd fit in with the look and feel of this incarnation. Campbell would be my second pick... only because i understand that he's a busy man. not to mention... the art that Matches Malone posted in the other thread (the sample pages with rocksteady, don, and raph) was phenomenal... definitely something i'd love to see in this series.

this one:
In hopes of mustering up support for Mateus, here are some rough pieces he's done of what looks like the turtles fighting Rocksteady! :D

I just read the Mikey issue, and I actually think Kuhn might be great on the main title. Just so long as he makes sure to keep the turtles from being drawn too large.

I'm torn between choosing Valerio Schiti and Ross Campbell, I like their drawing styles. But in the end it doesn't matter because I'll end up buying the comics anyway.

I voted for Valerio because Ross is pretty busy with his own stuff(amazing stuff!). It would have been a harder decision for me if not for that.

I am curious about Bobby Curnow's "other" vote... sounds like we got ourselves a wildcard on our hands. Maybe a surprise?

CyberCubed

Valerio Schiti, at least for the light-hearted issues. His drawings reminds me of the cartoons/Archie stuff.

Matches Malone
07-19-2012, 10:42 AM
The other reason I'm psyched for Mateus is because Ross Campbell's style is a much bigger jump from Dan Duncan's. He's already done an issue in the main ongoing; the transition would be much smoother. Then again, Andy Kuhn to Ross Campbell isn't too far off either. Not like I would complain about either, and I'm definitely interested in seeing what Kuhn can do. I think he's got a lot of potential and talent, especially if you've checked out his other artwork.

Anyone notice Bobby voted "other"? Is he trying to tell us something?! Sneaky son of a gun...

honestly I think some art samples should have been in the OP to help jog memories (like mine :p)

The only one I remember off hand is ross, because he has a thread here that is very active.

I think he'd be fantastic, but he seems to have creator-owned projects stealing all his time :p :p (more power to him!)

I love the way he draws the turtles, but I think he should tone the bananas down a lot... they look like blankets :p

Ross Campbell is awesome and all; I respect his work and general attitude, but Urru definitely had a style that I think worked beautifully with the IDW setting. Darkened it just enough to visually pull it all together. Plus, it really felt like the Turtles moved like ninja in his pages (Santoluco did a good job with that ninja feel, too, I think). I'd get a monthly subscription and the trade paperbacks if he took over.

maybe bobby is looking for another artist... one we haven't seen in the series as of yet. Well... whomever idw chooses, I hope they give us an amazing artist that captures the feel of this version of the Turtles.

Haha, you can see my vote? I was just curious what the results here were, thus my vote. Anything is possible. Though I do hope everyone gives Andy a fair shake. I've seen what he's doing and it's great.

However, yeah-- as I've said elsewhere Ross is too busy for the foreseeable future. We've discussed more TMNT work. Maybe another micro down the line.

My #1 pick would be for Tristan Jones. I voted for Mark Torres since I really liked his Infestation issues. His use of lighting as well as his Turtles are what I liked the most.

Stop teasing us, Bobby, we already know it's Rob Liefeld! I can't wait for him to draw his first story arc, "TMNT visits the pouch shop."

Ross Campbell hands down, followed by Wilson III. I know Ross can't do it at the moment, but I can't cast my vote elsewhere.

Mateus without a doubt. I have wanted him for the ongoing since he first appeared in issue #5. The images Matches has been posting sure helped to reinforce that.

I look forward to what Andy has in store, so I wouldn't wanna move him aside for someone else just yet. & of the given choices, it's hard to pick. Santolouco is obviously a good fit, but I really loved the Mirage vibe I got from Torres' infestation books. & like thelouisguy said, Tristan Jones would actually be dope too. But really all of these guys are truly talented, and I'd welcome virtually all of them to take the reigns. Raph & Donny's micro artists stand out as well.

same here. Campbell is my first choice followed by Santolouco, then Wilson III. though Kuhn's art is growing on me and i will give him a few issues until i truly come to a decision. i just hope that he really tones down the teeth. i love his turtles when their mouths are closed or there's only a little teeth showing. other times it like someone else (i forget who) wrote about them having rabbit teeth.

I voted Mark Torres based on the two Infestation issues, but after reading the Casey Jones micro-series issue, I was really impressed with Mike Henderson. I really like Henderson's Casey. Much better than Duncan's Casey. Henderson's Turtles aren't so great, I prefer Torres' Turtles.

How about Peter Laird, since he's not busy with Volume IV?

My favorite so far is Ross Campbell, his Leonardo micro was great (and I love the way you draw those girls in your deviantart page!), but I know he has no time now (someone said this here), so my vote went to Santolouco. Mike Henderson'art is very nice too. Valerio Schiti's style is exactly what i DON'T want to see in this comics.

I hope to see some art from Peter Laird one day, maybe just a cover art, or a one-shot story with Eastman. Kevin is the only one that can bring him in a IDW issue, I guess.

Between Campbell and Santolouco. I voted Santolouco based on his "Secret History of the Foot clan" cover featuring Splinter and the turtles. Also, I think it fits the aura/ambiance of the current IDW series.

Voted for Ross Campbell and Santolouco was my other choice.
And ( i guess ) naturally them two, have the most votes at the moment.

I wish Campbell was not that busy.

Considering Campbell will not be taking it... choosing between Santolouco and Mark Torres would be so hard for me btw.
Those 3 guys are my fave.

If I had to rank my favourite to my least favourite from the proposed list:

1. Santolouco (very versatile in his style, but...)

I like:

I don't like:

http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m8r9q333o11rwxz28o1_500.jpg

-. Campbell (only con to his style would be that the turtles look much younger/smaller than they should; love his humans though)

http://media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m2pesbeyRb1qhyssr.jpg

3. Schiti (simple, slick and effective, I am actually considering to change my vote because I had not recalled how sweet his artwork in Don's micro was)

I did not vote for him as well ( well... obviously, since he is at zero ) but surprised that Mike Henderson got zero votes so far.

I really liked the Casey issue. Made me feel as if i was reading a Tales of TMNT issue of Tristan Jones & Paul Harmon.
And Henderson's style ( and probably the gritty tones ) had a pretty huge affect on that, i guess.

Ross Campell seems to have the most name recognition and the most active profile, so he naturally would be the go-to man.
