Is there anything that would make you not see the new film in theaters? Like the Turtles being aliens. Or would you see it anyway just because your a fan?

hmmm....how about if..the turtles are recolored black instead of green. April is actually an obese man and Casey is a dog.

Idk, just making crap up. Really all it would really take would for a really bad plot(I mean reeeallly bad) that just screams crap along with bad visuals to make me not watch it.

If they arrived on earth Howard The Duck style
If the humor is too slapstick like TMNT 2 or 3 (Turtles in Time), both are... overboard. I prefer the darker style of TMNT 1 or TMNT 2007.
If I get the impression the film is too much like Bayformers (ie the turtles are "background" characters and the REAL character of the film is april and/or casey, that's just BS. Just like Sam and his various GFs in the 'formers films :/)

If I see any of these things in the trailer, I'm not paying for a ticket:
A dog (or anything else) peeing or humping something.
An overtly insensitive stereotype character.
Any amount of focus on the US Army (one helicopter in front of a sunset/sunrise or one soldier yelling something and I'm not going).
Any indication that the turtles will be secondary characters to a main cast of humans.
A fart sound and/or any overtly cartoony sound effects.
The turtles (or even one of them) acting consistently moronic or annoying/douchey.
April O'Neil showing no sign of personality/intelligence, while being played by some model who can't act.

That said, Michael Bay's not directing it, nor is he writing it, so I have some hope that the movie might come out good, but if I see any of the above warning signs, I'll probably not see it in the theater.

More likely he's talking about Bay's tendency to completely worship the Army in his movies. Bay uses the Army like Tarantino uses feet. The movie is called Transformers, not Soldiers. It's indicative of a bigger problem in movies where the creators of the movie forget the incredibly obvious notion that people don't go to the monster/robot/ninja turtle movie to see humans, they go to see the monster/robot/ninja turtle.

Joe figures.

Which ... I guess is weirdly appropriate. Never mind.

What do you have against the US Army?
They have nothing to do with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and they have a tendency to be the main focus of movies Michael Bay is involved with (the most obvious case being Transformers, where the US Army seems to be given a lot more importance than the Autobots).
It's not about what I have against the US Army, it's about the fact that they have no place in a TMNT movie, and the fact that Bay has an obsession with the armed forces that tends to get in the way of making movies that are supposed to be about something else. The only way I could see the US Army having any reason to turn up in a TMNT movie is if they're doing the Triceraton invasion of Earth, but that would be an incredibly stupid place to begin a reboot.

The Turtles taking human shape, and going to high-school, and getting bullied for being odd, until they come across Master Splinter who explains their origins, and trains them so that they can kick the bullies butts at the end of the movie, after dealing with Shredder of course.

Plain and simple: below-average reviews, in particular when compared with the '90s movies. If you can't improve upon a pre-existing product within a targeted universe, then there's no purpose for paying to see no improvements. This isn't like the Nick series where as long as you have TV you can watch it for free. Its easy to see why a movie is not worth seeing if clearly many more critics disapprove it than approve it (unless if we get a slew of 2-star reviews). Its the simplest way to judge if a movie is worth seeing, not judging by one particular feature, such as being aliens or not having Shredder in it.

Vincent
07-24-2012, 10:58 AM
Man, not sure.. Last movie that came out, everybody told me it sucked (people still do) but what happened? I actually liked it, and I missed the experience of watching it in a movie theatre.
The Imagi movie? I don't know, I mostly liked it. It wasn't perfect or anything; the villain and monsters were a bit uninteresting, and Mikey and Don got very little to do, but I wouldn't say it sucked. I didn't find it to be fantastic, but I did find it to be enjoyable, and it looked great. Story-wise not on par with the 4Kids series at its best, but easily much better than the 4Kids series at its worst, and definitely better than the second and third movies. I think the main problem was that it was a bit underwhelming after so many years.

I maintain that the most people-pleasing move one could make in making a new TMNT movie for general audiences is to use elements from the Fred Wolf series, but repurpose them in a more story-focused and less "goofy" way (such as by making Krang, Bebop and Rocksteady competent and intimidating), and I think that's what the general audience wanted, so when they got Winters and a bunch of monsters, it seemed like a missed opportunity to come back with a bang (similarly to how Tokka and Rahzar made people go "huh?"). People want to see the Technodrome, and there's really no reason why that would have to bring excessive goofiness with it.

I think people mostly disliked the Imagi movie for what it wasn't, rather than for what it was.

I loved the first one too. Pretty sure the new one won't be as good, so I wouldn't get your hopes up.

Not going because of critic reviews is stupid. I read 'em too, I love 'em honestly, but it's just entertainment. Especially with stuff like TMNT, any super-hero or comic movie... the reviewers by and large are not "fans" of the property and can't see/appreciate things the same way others might.

Green Lantern is a good case in point. It definitely had flaws, many I agree with and all of which were beaten into people's skulls by critics, and in turn it killed any enthusiasm people had for the movie. But to me, as a huge GL fan for 20 years, who never thought they'd be able to do a GL flick and that if they did it would be cheap and horrible, I thought it was better than average and a movie more people may have enjoyed if they didn't listen so much to others' opinions. Could have been better, but it was 9/10 the GL movie I'd always wanted. If I listened to what other people said I would've missed out. It really deserved to do better, and it deserves the sequel they went to the trouble of laying multiple seeds for.

I think society's obsession with making everything in entertainment black and white/"good" or "bad" is terrible. Art doesn't work that way. No critique is definitive, and an aggregate consensus of critiques isn't necessarily any more so. Plenty of very entertaining films, games, comic and novels have given joy to millions despite being "A Solid C+".

I love Ninja Turtles, so I'll see the movie to be entertained by someone else's idea of them, even if it's nothing like mine and other people think it sucks.

And I agree a lot of people dislike the 2007 TMNT flick for what it didn't give. I thought what it gave us was "OK", there's not a ton actively "wrong" with it, but it wasn't the TMNT movie anybody wanted, which is kind of unfair to the people who made it, but less so when considering how vocal TMNT fans are about what we DO want in a movie. Almost feels like the makers went out of their way to give us "their" TMNT instead of what most people wanted, which is usually a good first step to pleasing no one.

Bob

Well, all of Jonathan Liebesman's films have been completely ravaged by critics so far. I don't think one of his films has ended up with higher than 30% on Rotten Tomatoes. So, I know that Ninja Turtles will get destroyed by critics. Critics have their knives especially sharpened for these types of films, regardless of who's directing it.

I, as well, don't agree with refusing to go and watch a film because a stranger who get's paid to watch it told you not to. There's something about that that seems quite shallow and spineless to me. It goes against any art form, but especially film. I would never allow a critic to sway me either way. If you want to watch something, either because you're a fan or have a genuine interest, then watch it, regardless of the reviews. The same if you don't want to watch something. I know that The Artist has been universally praised, but I have no interest in watching it. Not because I have a prejudice against films like that, I’m just not interested in them. The problem with critics is that a lot of them have an agenda and go in to a film with an already boiling prejudicial bias, more so with the breed of films that Ninja Turtles will end up being. I genuinely think that’s wrong.

I mean, you’ve seen all the articles. How many of them have already declared Ninja Turtles to be the worst thing since the Black Death? People are already doing it. How many people have already decided that they’re going to hate this film no matter what? I find it sickening.

I'm a huge GL fan and own www.thegreenlanterncorps.com, so I was definitely looking forward to the movie. I didn't particularly like the movie, but no way does it deserve 99% of the flak it seems to get. At a certain point it seemed to be hip to ridicule the movie and people seemed to get a mob mentality about it, but it's not warranted.

And I agree a lot of people dislike the 2007 TMNT flick for what it didn't give. I don't believe for one moment that the 2007 film was in any way exactly the movie that Munroe would have done if he'd been given full reign over the production. What we were "given" was a completely neutered toy vehicle for small children designed to be absolutely non-offensive to anyone, anywhere in the world.

Leo656

I like you again  (J/K I never didn't)

I think GL would have been a lot better if only they'd taken out the Hammond stuff and had more action scenes instead, the Hammond stuff just looked too goofy to take seriously and undermined the drama and the weight of everything else going on. I'm betting it was a combination of budget concerns plus the need to make every comic book "not too dark" which led to GL not being all it could be. It's still one of my favorite super-hero flicks, but you're 100% right, it's a great example of a "mob hatred" flick that people gang up on and insist everyone hated for reasons which are hard to nail down. Like Superman Returns, which "everyone hated and was awful", despite the fact it made even more money than the near-universally praised Batman Begins. Ehh, what can ya do?

But anyway Andrew, Guy Gardner in a GL sequel? Your call? I say yes yes YES!

Back on-topic, totally agree, the last TMNT does look like a perfect example of Toy Company Interference and the PC Police conspiring together to wreck a project. Shame. Hopefully in a few years we'll be past the stigma that anything that looks even a little bit like a cartoon MUST be marketed to grade-schoolers.

Iif it looks like it will be on par with GI Joe: Rise of Cobra and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, I would probably see it, though I would be hesitant, and would probably wait to hear what the word is from people I trust. However, I think we are a ways off from even being able to tell what kind of film this will be. Until we see casting decisions and even trailers, all we have to judge by are the other big scifi/action movies that have come out the past several years and, of course, Lebeisman's other films.

I don't think JT would fit in Casey's shoes, but I could see him pulling Mikey. Maybe.. It's not that I don't think he's a good actor. On the contrary, I think he has proven himself, unlock many others who could end up in this film, but I'm just not convince he would fit.
