View Full Version : should us tmnt fans be upset compared to mmpr

I just found a link that mmpr is releasing all of their episodes in one set in august. 19 discs plus extras

http://ohnotheydidnt.livejournal.com/70463353.html

It took us about a decade to get ours complete lol.

I am a tad upset that mmpr gets them all in one swoop for that price where us tmnt fans spent about $10-15 per dvd we purchased, lets not forget season 4,5, and 6 were more + season 7 was a lil pricey.

Doesn't matter where you start where you finish, but just found this shocking how MMPR fans can get them all for one. Granted we had 10 seasons compared to 3, but both shows finished airing in 1996ish.

Ah well- Guess we can have a 90s' august celebration!

The bonus features also seem better than ours. At least thanks to Canadian Turtle, IveyAngelo, and NinjaTurtlesNetwork.com and the TMNT Podcast site we got out "bonus feature content" more independently, and I put those of separate discs. Though people would rather spend a little at a time rather than on one big set, even if it means less money per episode. We also don't have to be in the shadow of Super Sentai since Mirage/Archie Turtles were completely independent of the OT. I'd rather wait til' 2013 when it may be in clearance/cheaper on eBay since that will be MMPR's 20th anniversary, and will feel much more appropriate to celebrate then. Even still, the canon isn't complete until In Space (which includes that NTNM crossover episode, which I'm sure we'll all buy), so I hope it sells well so we can get that far!

Why are people always comparing the Ninja Turtles to the Power Rangers? I don't understand how the two coralate with each other, except for a couple minor similarities.

Of course we should be upset, Lionsgate halfassed the TMNT release and gave us pretty terrible releases with low quality and less than stellar packaging/special features over almost 10 years. Disney never cared about PR's and gave us pretty crappy releases and once Saban got the franchise back they partner with Shout and now we have these amazing box set released relatively quickly with great quality, great special features and amazing packaging.

The comment about MMPR only being three seasons couldn't be more wrong, TMNT may have been 10 seasons instead of 3 but MMPR is still more episodes than all 10 TMNT seasons and we're still getting them all in one box set, and that's not all, Power Rangers fans aren't just getting MMPR we're getting a megabox set that has MMPR-PRLost Galaxy, which is basically the first 7 PR seasons and around 350 episodes and we'll be getting the other 10 seasons PRLR-PRRPM probably in less than a year making 700 episodes released in less than 1 year, and 1 year is how long it took Lionsgate to release S1 and S2 a total of 18 episodes on DVD.

Except for the fact that it was MMPR that ended "turtlemania", the title of the show was obviously influenced by the TMNT title, they both feature Martial Arts, they teamed up and most 90s kids grew up with both franchises and both franchises were huge around the same time. There's plenty of reasons to compare the two.

I'd say this is more accurate. To me it seemed that turtemania was over by the time Power Rangers came on the scene. TMNT was just killing time 'til the next thing.

And then Pokemon killed Power Rangers.

Same deal. The Power Rangers fad was well and truly over by the time Pokemon hit. We were already on what...Turbo or In Space by the time Nintendo released the games and anime aired.

I love bonus stuff, but I don't feel comfortable when I'm upset about something. It's like a distraction from that exciting, magical journey I go on when I watch cartoons from my childhood. An entire TMNT box containing all episodes would be ace though. :)

Power Rangers never really died it's been on-air pretty much non stop since it's launch.

Well, Disney wanted to kill it for a while before actually doing so, with that Remaster MMPR Season One crap (and they wanted to kill it sooner, they just had to not advertise RPM, and stick it at a 5AM timeslot to kill it, and would have killed it after Jungle Fury, had they not gotten asked to continue). Saban saved it, got it back into being a hit name (quality's subjective, but the 2 million or so viewers on Samurai say the marketing worked) and are bringing back the show on DVD (pre-ordered my MMPR-PR:LG set), so I'm happy. They're also bringing back several of their other live action shows (so, hey, we now get The Next Mutation on DVD...yay?).

Be upset at Lionsgate, if anyone. Shoutfactory's giving these seasons in reasonably priced box sets (MMPR Seasons 1 and 2 will be released as half seasons, the rest as full seasons when bought alone at stores), yet, Lionsgate got the DVD rights to Samurai and Super Samurai, and they're release 4 episode DVD sets (apparently, box sets will come down the line, but I told myself I wouldn't go through the 3-4 episode a set deal after the DBZ on edited VHS/uncut VHS/Uncut Bilingual DVD days...never again *holds Dragon Boxes*).

Still, the way they were released is the issue. It would be nice to see the sets get released in proper order (maybe both individually, and in a complete series set, for the pain seekers among us). I'd buy it if they released a set like that on Time Life, like they did the 7 Season PR set.

Though honestly, the 4Kids show needs a proper release a bit more, considering how it's DVD release went.

Power Rangers has never left the airwaves ONCE in it's 20-plus history. While there was no original content in 2010 because Disney cancelled the show in 2009, there was the "reversioning" of old MMPR episodes. Saban bought the rights back and it's remained active since then

Technically, PR did leave the airwaves for a time. In the US anyway. After the two final reversioned episodes aired on August 28th of 2010, PR hadn't aired here in any shape or form until Power Rangers Samurai started on February 7th of 2011.

Power Rangers has always remained on the air with "new" episodes even if the MMPRv2 was just glorified re-runs a la Transformers Gen.2 it still wasn't just a normal re-run and had work put into it. Sure it wasn't nationwide as some omitted it but the same can be said about the last few seasons of the turtles I wouldn't say Pokemon killed Power Rangers or that PRs wasn't killed by Pokemon though. The Power Ranger fad ended around the end of MMPRs3, by the time PRZeo started the show was no longer the fad it once was and by 1998 when Pokemon started and the craze Power Rangers was far from big. So I can't say Pokemon ended the fad or killed PRs since it did neither, the fad had been long over and the show continued with Pokemon anyways.

And yeah many shows have martial arts but it's clear that the idea of Power Rangers was greenlit because of TMNT, a group of teenagers who do martial arts? It's basically the concept of TMNT, now unlike all the other clones that tried to ride on the TMNT train, Power Rangers actually offered something original and new to kids which is why it hit hard and replaced TMNT. But it's clear that it was influenced by and had certain elements to appeal to the TMNT crows which is why it's always compared with PRs.

I don't think it's "whiny" to be a *little* cranky about it. I know TMNT got "more than most cartoon shows get" and all that, but personally I find it's inexcusable for any show as popular as TMNT NOT to get a full release, in a timely fashion.

negative much? Can I at least complain that I want my Kamen Rider Dragon Knight dvds

As for the topic itself... well, I suppose you could be upset, or be glad that you got dvds anyway. I mean there isn't really much to say, Lions gate and Saban just have different ways of doing this, though Power Rangers has more episodes to use, only season I will probably get is RPM though.

As for the similarities of TMNT to MMPR... not hard to believe, considering both the cartoon and PR are about a squardron of color coded heroes with plot-of-the-week episodes

also just to continue... Yu-Gi-Oh! stole the phenomenon torch from Pokemon... what came after Yu-gi-oh!?

Genesis

Yu-Gi-Oh! stole the phenomenon torch from Pokémon...Hardly. Turtlemania was a phenomenon. Pokémon's early popularity was a phenomenon. Yu-Gi-Oh!, despite being enjoyed by a recognisably large number of children for a while, certainly has never been big enough to be described as a phenomenon.

It's not a problem of popularity, but a problem of company. Shout Factory is a completely different company than Liongate. Liongate does releases differently than Shout. Bottomline: Shout Factory cares about the shows they work on. Liongate, not so much. The best we can hope for is that Nick lets Shout handle DVDs (including 2k3).

And yeah, it's whiny to complain about such things.

I don't think it's whiny at all that if I'm paying for something, I want it to be at least reasonably well-done and prompt.

The OT DVDs they gave us are fine, and it's the least they could do. But that's my problem with it; the way they gave it to us was almost literally *the least* they could do. I'm "fine" with what we have, but I wouldn't mind a re-release with a little bit of care put into it, someday.

But it's clear that it was influenced by and had certain elements to appeal to the TMNT crows which is why it's always compared with PRs.

Actually, it was greenlit because the head of Fox Kids at the time tried to bring Super Sentai to America in the 80s with Stan Lee, so when Haim Saban brought his promo for Power Rangers, it lead to a show being made:

http://www.blastfromthepasttv.com/mloeschinterview.html

"Interestingly enough, I know that this is about Marvel and the X-Men cartoon, but I had a similar experience with Power Rangers. Stan and I had the rights to Power Rangers to try and sell it. I’ve told this many times, but it never gets picked up. Back in the mid to late 1980’s, Stan came to my office one day at Marvel with a ¾ ‘’ video cassette and he told me I had to take a look at this since he thought I’d like it. So he left me with this cassette and I put it on and watched it. Afterwards, I walked down to his office and said: “Stan, what’s up with this? It’s all in Japanese!” He told me: “Yeah I know, but what do you think? I think it’s fantastic!” And I told him that I thought it was fantastic too! What had happened was that because the live-action Spider-Man that had been made years before and had became a big hit in Japan, Stan had become a big celebrity there. This was not just because of the comics, but also because the show had worked so well in Japan. So Stan became friends with a Mr. Watanabe at the studio where other live action shows were being done. He had the rights to the Japanese version of Power Rangers, which had been on the air for many years, and he told Stan to take a look at it. If he liked it, he could have a free ride by taking it and trying to sell it. So that’s when Stan came to me and I got very excited. Then I authorized our team to spend $25,000 and we put together a little pilot by plugging in American voice-overs (we didn’t shoot any original material) and cutting together really funny, action takes. But when I went around pitching it to all the networks, none of them would buy it. I was literally thrown out of the room at NBC since we had gotten kudos from doing things like Muppet Babies and now they saw this and thought it was horrible. So we pitched it to all of the networks and nobody would buy it. Then we went back to Mr. Watanabe, told him we tried to sell it but couldn’t, and relinquished the rights to the show.

Years later in about 1992, I was meeting with Haim Saban and he was pitching me a bunch of cartoons from Europe. He had about 12 cartoons lined up in a stack of cassettes for me to look at. I got about ¾ of the way through and he came into the conference room to see how I was doing. I said: “Haim, these are all fine, but I’m looking for something really offbeat, zany, fun and exciting…I want a counter program for my morning lineup Monday through Friday. I don’t want to do light, fluffy stuff…I want to come in with something different.” And he says: “Hold it right there!” And he left the room and came back literally running down the hall with this cassette. He told me not to get mad at him and I asked him why I’d get mad at him. His response was: “Oh, a lot of people hate this. Let me show you this, take a look, and let me know what you think.” He put the cassette on and it was the same show, the same videotape that Stan and I had that had from Mr. Watanabe years before. I watched two minutes of it and I went next door to Haim’s office and said: “I love it…this is it. There’s changes that I want to make, there’s development we should do do, but this is the show…I’ll buy it and I’ll commit to it today.” And that’s the story, but it all started with Stan."

Just an interesting bit of trivia to add, given your comment.

Also, besides TMNT and PR, I also fall into the Super Sentai fandom (and Kamen Rider as well), so I wouldn't complain about getting legal, reasonably priced subbed dvds, or even a stream using ads for funds.

And Yu-Gi-Oh! was also a pretty big thing, several successful anime, manga, an original, American-funded movie, the card game, video games, it all did pretty damn good. I would also put the Dragon Ball franchise in as a Phenomenon. It had a major impact on kids, CN and the Toonami block as a whole, and got me into anime in the first place.

But with TMNT and PR, I honestly think the OT show was just on it's way out anyway by the time. The episodes per season dropped off around the time the show came out, but decisions like those take a bit of time to make. Though, the fact that Saban got to make a TMNT show after the original went off the air is a bit suspicious...

They were the two big children's fads, one right after the other.

MMPR took the spotlight away from TMNT. There's plenty of back story there between the two.

Heck, MMPR even borrowed the long winded name style: Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers compared to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Still, I see no reason to get upset. We've had the TV show on DVD for years, while Power Rangers fans are just getting it now.

Wasn't part of the reason why the TMNT cartoon got axed because CBS decided to refocus their Saturday morning block towards E/I programming?

So everything up to 1996 probably still would have turned out more or less the same. It's when you get beyond that that there'd be real differences. Next Mutation definitely would not have existed, and then there's the question of if Fox Kids would have survived long enough without Power Rangers for 4Kids to come along with Fox Box (ergo, 2K3 may not have existed, at least not in the way we know it).
