I recently saw the Nick TMNT clip of where the Turtles are training. Donnie was fighting Raph, Raph won (even uses Donnie's weapon against him)

It made me start to think...has Donnie ever beaten his brothers when they sparred?

I've seen Leo beat his brothers. (In all the tv shows)

I've seen Raph beat his brothers. (In the '87 cartoon and upcoming Nick show).

I've seen Mikey beat his brothers. (In the '87 cartoon and '03 cartoon). (There's also the first live action movie where he was able to fend them off in blindfold sparring.)

But I've honestly never seen Donatello beat his brothers in sparring. Only time I've ever seen him win a fight was that Archie comic with Stump wrestling where they wrestled each other and Donnie beat Raph.

It just makes me think that the creative team is making fans believe that Donnie is the weakest member of their team when it comes to fighting.

Yeah, he's a genius with gadgets but why can't he be a skilled fighter as well? He does train with his brothers. May be Donnie does not train as much as Leo does but I just feel that the shows make Donnie seem like a weak fighter.

Has Donnie ever beaten his brothers whenever they sparred?

Tht question lurks in the back of my brain. I just think that since Donatello would prefer to talk than fight, so that's why. (I really don't know) :trazz:

He beat the Shredder 1 on 1 in the older toon when he became a Batman wannabe.

I remember Donatello's clone was able to beat the other's pretty easy, though he claimed to be 10 times stronger.

Not really because that's telling me that people who are genuises are automatically lousy fighters.

Donatello won the wrestling competition in Archie comics

I know he did, I mentioned about it on my first post.

It has been said in quite a few bios of Donatello (I believe one was even on the old NinjaTurtles.com website) that he was least interested in training and fighting, and that he would rather talk out conflicts before resorting to violence. Brains before brawn. That being the case, Donatello is most likely the least skilled fighter of the four. He cares the least for training and perfecting martial arts - he'd rather be in his lab or pondering about/using the latest gadgets, etc.

As a Donnie fan, I kind of take pride in that fact: that he'd rather talk things out than fight. That's a key character trait of Donatello, and I think that since his passion isn't in fighting, like it is for Leonardo and Raphael (in different contexts), it makes sense that he'd be the least skilled fighter.

Case in point, I wasn't at all surprised when Donnie was eliminated first in the Battle Nexus Tournament as depicted in the 2k3. I thought it fitting, and made the brains-before-brawn attitude more convincing for Donnie's character.

but that's the truth. don's iq is way over everybody else. don't u think it's a bit unfair if he still beat others in ninjatsu?

It's not necessarily to act as a statement of "Donatello is the best!" (even though he totally is).
The way I think of it is that Donatello is kind of the observer when training with his brothers. He simply doesn't fight as passionately as he would the Foot, but he would be as calculating, just in a different way. His mind may well be focused on feeling his brothers out. Learning how they fight in a way not to be confused woth Leonardo's almost militaristic manner of noting their weaknesses, so that he can be better prepared for future encounters.

Or perhaps Don has a lack of confidence against his brothers because he views them as more capable martial artists. He may feel like the odd Turtle out in terms of skill, even if he isn't. My point is that as long as his slightly lacking skill doesn't call attention to itself outside of brotherly sparring. I mean, after all, Donatello killed the Shredder in two incarnations, after all.

I wasn't at all surprised when Donnie was eliminated first in the Battle Nexus Tournament as depicted in the 2k3.I was pissed that he didn't win even one match, though. In a way, it turned out to be better, since all the fights of the tournament were pretty weak, but Donnie's fight with the Daimyo's son's minions alongside Usagi was pretty boss.

lolz i found lots don's fans tend to overestimate don's fighting skills. idk why... if they think abt melee when they think of donnie then they r wrong.

I was going to point out he won the match in Stump's Asteriod in TMNTA#37 but I see that was covered. I see it that each turtle represents a certain skill in fighting. Leonardo has the discipline,Raphael has the strength, Michelangelo has the athletism and agility, while Donatello is the strategist. All four qualities are key to being a great fighter and apt for battle. Sometimes one of these four qualities of a fighter will be more important than the others depending on situation and what makes each turtle shine when fighting Shredder,Krang,Rat King, etc.

You have a point there. He always wants to improve his inventions or invent new things rather than doing anything else. Plus I do see him talk more than fight.

Just saw that episode and it looks like Don has beaten his brothers in sparring.

At some point in the OT he must have beaten them. I just can't remember...

On a sidenote, fans of the games are more swayed towards Donatello as their favorite turtle due to his range! :tgrin:

So in the games, Donatello is usually top tier turtle!

talkin abt battles. u gotta have good weaps. the choice of don's weap tells u that he's not melee. he's more of a strategy guy in battle.

using the same reasoning, u shell come to conclusion that when u duel don, the best to do is to think nothing n do spontaneous melee attacks. coz no matter how smart ur, u can never over wit don's strategy.

I think he won some in. the OT, but not 100% sure

edit: Isn't there an ep. where Don thinks the sun is going to cook the earth, and the guys
make him train with them to calm him down???? I think he kicks all 3 of there shells at once!!!!

Now I can understand the similarities between Donatello and April. They both prefer brains of battles, though by taking too much of a forward step, they are both ripe to being kidnapped. I'm surprised that we don't see Donatello alone as a damsel in distress that much because of this in a similar matter to April. However, I'd say whenever Donatello doesn't see any gadget or possibility that could be used to calm the situation, he then decides that the best tool is the bo, and at that point Donatello can be the strongest Turtle. Just look at the Mirage Vol. 1 Shredder battle; with no technological distractions, it became clear to simply use the staff to knock out Shredhead.

Interesting. Even if the answer was no, in terms of fighting with any technology aid, Donnie would likely be the most lethal of the four if he wanted to be.

Have his brothers ever beaten Donatello in terms of intelligence? Meaning, would they be capable of Donnie's intellectual capacity if they had the passion for it? I feel like Leo could certainly have the ability to understand a lot of what Donnie does if he weren't as dedicated to putting his energy into perfecting his leadership role. Mikey also has displayed an impressive intellect concerning his own interests as well, and Raph has some definite understated intellect. There are no flies on any of them when it comes to what they decide to perfect/master.

Examples have been given, so yes, he has. In my opinion, each turtle can beat the other from time to time. Donnie just doesn't have the passion to fight like his brothers. I've seen more instances of Leo and Raph or Mike and Raph.

This is an interesting point. I think Leonardo especially, if he wanted to, could give Donnie a run for his money in a specific department if both of them studied or were passionate about the same things. They just have different passions. If Leonardo was interested in technology, I'd wager him and Don could have a mean-machine show-down of intellect. Michelangelo's smarts are often overshadowed by other mediums of the character, but he's been given some time to shine in that department especially in Tales and Image. He isn't a dummy, that's for sure.

Raphael, on the other hand - to me, he's not dumb, but he's entirely too "in the now" to sit down and actually read, write, or do anything that is deemed scholarly.

I agree, and I would love to see a Leo/Donnie intellect showdown. And I agree about Raph as well, although I think if he ever did get it in his head to master something of the scholarly pursuit, he could produce some surprisingly bright results due to being so headstrong. Or maybe I'm biased ;).

in the OT Donatello always came across as being very capable and tough custo oer to fight with. He seemed like the second best fighter out of the whole group. OT Mike, unfortunately was the one that was often potrayed as the weakest fighter in the OT. Even though he is still shown as compentent he was always the first to go down or get captured and the one turtle Rocksteady and Bebop didn't seem intimidated by, and always seemed to bully him when he was without the other turtles.
