The Turtles' expanded ninja gear

Hello fellow Dromers,

The purpose of this thread is to discuss the weaponry used by our favourite turtles.
I remember during the development stages of this Nick series that some people were not too happy about the announced weapon alterations for Mikey (kusarigama instead of nunchaku) and Donnie (naginata instead of bo staff).

It turns out that those 2 will keep their original weapons... at least at the start of the series (season 1). Because the idea of giving Mikey and Donnie sharp weapons to fight with has not been entirely dropped. In some charracter posters, the official bios on the Nick website and more recently in TMNT merchandise, we see that each turtle has different types of ninja gear.

Donnie has a sansetsukon (three-section staff), Leo has kunai, Mikey has a kusarigama and Raph has shuang gou (hook swords) among other ninja tools.
Do you think we will get to see the turtles in action with these weapons in the show? Do you like the idea of them relying on more than one set of ninja weapons?

I personally would loooove to have the choice to use different weapons for each turtle in the upcoming video games of the new franchise. :)

I doubt we'll see the turtles using some of the weapons and that they are just toy accessories. Thought it would be insanely cool to see changeable weapons in upcoming games

As for the Kusarigama and Naginiata, the weapons "transforms" from the initial weapons to the bladed ones.

As well as a separate katana. Does Leonardo use a combination of a long and a short sword in the show?


I liked how in the Mirage comics they sometimes do switch ninja weapons.

Hard to decide between Raph's jutte and Mike's kusarigama. The former definitely was a pleasant surprise, as much as Don's three-section staff, anyway. Maybe I need to rethink this.

I voted for Donatello, since even though he might not have the weapon that looks the prettiest (Leonardo), but having a bo that looks like a big nunchuck and a slicing weapon gives him a broader range of attacking styles than any of the other Turtles.

Based on the figures I like Leo's set best.

I think it would be really interesting during the show for them to use some alternate weapons every now and then.
Adds a little element of surprise to the enemy if you don't come at them with the same thing each time.

I love the idea of giving Donnie a retractable blade, so I'm voting Donnie's mainly for the naginata.

I hope that in the future video game of this series, we'd have something close to this:

Donatello
Weapon: bo staff (default at start of game) or naginata (unlockable once a certan level is attained)
Projectile: tomoe shuriken-disk (see pic of Donnie's set in OP)
Combat stats (rated over 10) with bo staff: attack 6, range 9, speed 5, stamina 6;
with naginata: +2 for attack

Leonardo
Weapon: twin niten ryu (default) or sole katana and kunai (unlockable)
Projectile: dragon shuriken (see pic of Leo's set in OP)
Combat stats with twin niten ryu: attack 8, range 7, speed 6, stamina 7;
with katana and kunai: +1 for speed

Michelangelo
Weapon: twin nunchaku (default) or kusarigama (unlockable)
Projectile: Chinese shuriken (see pic of Mikey's set in OP)
Combat stats with twin nunchaku: attack 6, range 6, speed 9, stamina 5;
with kusarigama: +1 for attack, +2 for range, -1 for speed

Raphael
Weapon: twin sai (default) or twin shuang gou (unlockable)
Projectile: hira shuriken (see pic of Raph's set in OP)
Combat stats with twin sai: attack 8, range 4, speed 6, stamina 9;
with twin shuang gou: +2 for range

If you are wondering how Leo fight's with a katana + kunai, I imagine that in the game his kunai would be an extra projectile, which means when you press the button for a projectile Leo throws 1 shuriken + 1 kunai, and during his melee combo he finishes with a kunai jab.

Don is my favorite turtle always, However, when comes down to pure pain, suffering and shape variety, Raph set wins in my book.

I don't know too much about weapons (let alone ninja ones), but Raph's just looks made of bad ass!

There is only one thing that brothers me about Raph's set. Each turtle seems to have a short-distance weapon, a long distance weapon and a projectile. One of these three in the set is the turtle's "favored" weapon. Though I know Raph is a close and personal sort of guy, he kinda got cheated in the long distance department.

Leo is not much better, but at least he has a long sword and can get some air between him and his opponent. Raph is in your face no matter what he is using.

It's funny to see Raph having mostly defensive weapons and the then BOOM Shuang Gou. I'd love to see him demoralize a Kraang by slicing it's suit small pieces at a time :P

The problem I have with Don having any kind of bladed weapon is that it goes somewhat against his character. His fighting style has always been the least violent, which reflects his personality as the guy who'd rather be doing something else, and only fights when he has to, which is badass in its own right.

The problem I have with Mikey having kusarigama is more or less the same; that the nunchaku reflect his personality and fighting style better, since it's a very speed-based weapon, with a lot of twirling and misdirection, whereas the kusarigama is a much slower and more predictable weapon (once it's in motion, you can pretty much figure out where it's going).

I'm not saying they should never use bladed weapons; I just hope they don't do it that much, because that's kind of Leo and Raph's territory, and I think part of the charm of TMNT has always been that the four are very different, and their weapons are a big part of that.

Thanks for the awesome video! Like I said before, I know very little about weapons, so I never even imagined the two could hook on each other like that! That only increased the Raph set's bad ass score! XD

I really do appreciate the fact that folks on this forum actually knows about this type of stuff.

I do wonder how/if all of these weapons are going to show up in the cartoon. Like, will they just pick out each weapon for certain missions? I don't imagine that they can possibly have the set on them while they run around the city, except maybe when they have the van of course.

You do know that actual Sai isn't a bladed weapon. As for now (current TMNT gen) we've only seen him have the hook swords in toy form.

As a note, I am really happy to see Sai weapons without being parrying daggers. Something that have bugged me with both Fred Wolf series and the 4Kids series.

Some weapons are critically linked to Shinobi, but no weapon was exclusive to the Ninja.

Even Shuriken, which are by pop-culture linked with the ninja like bread and butter was used by the Samurai. And the Kunai was a gardening tool.

Sorry, I was a bit loose with my wording. I meant that the thin metal weapons are generally the territory of Leo and Raph, while Don and Mikey are the "blunt instrument" guys.

sorry for my late contribution to tis thread, been reading it since it's start, but just now checkin in for my two cents...
I LOVE the fact that michelangelo is using a kusarigama!!!!!and the naganata(if that is the name of the three sticked nunchuku)is one of my favourites, too...
I love that apparently the turtles are mastering more than their trademark weapon....
but yeah, the kusarigama is one great additio in my oppinion!

I'd love to see the foot using different weapons like in 2k3, too...would definatelly be cool to see foot soldier action figures with different pop in holsters(like the current ones have with a katana and a wakizashi) sporting different weapons like a bow and arrow and so on...
by the way:what was the name of that cool weapon(bladed) from the ot raphael that he could fit into his belt on his backshell?that was cool and would rock to come back!!;)...or the axt type of weapon the foot are using in the first movie(causes the fire in aprils apartment)...

isn't it the upgraded weap for raph in the ninja tribunal season?Um, sorta. It was a version of a kusarigama that has kama on both ends of the chain, instead of a weight on one end. Axl Low from Guilty Gear uses it, but to be honest, I really hate that version of the weapon.

No, the Three Section Staff is named Sansetsukon. Naginata is the bladed pole weapon.

ah thanks for pointing that out, amigo!....well, the bladed version of his staff is interesting as well...didn't even think about that when I wrote my post....
it seems to be handled like a spear then...just from watching documentaries on the shaolin monks using bo staffs and seeing that in the context that this new show will incorporate more acurate fighting choreography it gives me the goosebumps...major goosebumps actually;)...goosebumps city!!;)

As long as the bladed weapons for Mike and Don aren't permanent replacements, I don't mind them sparring w/ them, or if they know they are going into a major battle, bringing them as backups (seems like they brought extra weapons when they went to the Technodrome for the first time in the original series, maybe?). When I first heard about them getting bladed weapons, I was not happy about it. But if they are just for the toys, or as backups, rock on. I think the ability to choose to use them in a video game is cool, too. But I thought Nick was going too far by changing their signature permanently. I can deal w/ 3 toes, but not that.

Well I'm not saying ditch the signature weapons, but be versatile with the weaponry. They don't need to be limited by types of weapons. I guess my point is that different tools are functional for different tasks.

Even though the tops are different raphs weapons make me think of big trouble in little china, when the storm is doing the show.
