View Full Version : What do you guys think of the alternate voices on the OT?

Sometimes Townsend Coleman would voice Splinter, Burne Thompson, Vernon, Shredder, and Krang when Pat Fraley and Peter Renaday were unavailable.
Coleman's splinter and Burne voice was spot on in "Michaelanglo Meets Bugman again". At first, I didn't know their voices were performed by Coleman in that episode, that's how good he is
What do you think of Gregg Berger as Donatello? To me, he sounds like Scooter from Muppets Babies.

I can only think of one alternate voice that was good, and that was for the Shredder. All the others made me cringe, Raph's in particular.

The OT alternate Shredders except for Townsend's weren't that bad IMO, as well as Greg Berg for Bebop, though his Donatello was a little too "fake" sounding. Michael Gough and Hal Rayle's Raphs weren't bad, but I cringe upon Thom Pinto (it's not Hal Rayle since his name is not in Season 3's credits), sounding very forced. Townsend's Splinter sounded like a nice Rat King and not too bad and did a good job with Vernon and Burne, but his Krang was off, sounding way too whiny. Leatherhead even had an alternative voice in Season 7, and it wasn't nearly as good as Jim Cummings.

Its like your in my head! I share that thought to a "t" however I will elaborate and say William E. Martin who voiced a somewhat raspier Shredder in the character's final seven appearances. It was Pinto's Raphael voice that was cringe worthy.
What other cartoons were forced to have subitute voice actors? This was a big problem with James Avery and Rob seemed to have some conflicts. To this day Rob Pauslen is Raphael so this whole voicing Donatello is going to be wierd. Barry just missed a handful. I will assume it was in relation to being the SGA President?

The Season 10 Raph is actually pretty decent. He's no Rob Paulsen but he was a much better voice than the guy who did him in the Euro eps.

In "Inspector Gadget", Dr. Claw was voiced by Cree summer's father, Don Francks, whenever Frank Welker was unavailable for some episodes. Don's Claw voice was bad. He made him sound like a dying old man.
Leatherhead even had an alternative voice in Season 7, and it wasn't nearly as good as Jim Cummings.
Leatherhead was voiced by Peter Renaday in "Night of the Rogues". He's not bad, but I still perfer Jim Cummings.

Also on Hey Arnold, the voice actor for Arnold changed in almost every season.
I liked William Martin and Townsend Coleman doing the Shredder voices. But I think the one who did the best job of all is that guy who voiced old toon Raphael in Turtles Forever.

I can't say that Shredder's alternate voice/voice actor was bad, but I always cringe a bit, and I don't know why exactly. Might be because I'm so used to it. I've never really noticed the others too much. I've noticed Donnie's once and Bebop once or twice, but they didn't bother me much.

Why did they change voice for just some episodes? Lack of time for voice actors? It seems to be most common in circa season 3-5, when the number of episodes were peaking.

It took me years for me to get used to Frank Welker's Scooby Doo after Don Messick died.
Same for his current portrayal of Garfield after Lorenzo Music died.
You guys notice a trend here?
Speaking of Scooby Doo, Shaggy's New VA is not half bad considering that he played the live action roll.

I did not know that there were 3 Arnold voices.Just two.It was something about the first actor's voice changing because of puberty so he voiced Wolfgang. Surprisingly enough Gerald's voice gets a sudden change as well yet it was the same actor.
Aside from the voice actor overhaul when the Pok'emon anime switched hands I cannot think of anything in the 2000s. It seems sub VAs are now a rarity these days which is a good thing. In Enter The Dragons Hun sounded like he had a cold.It ws a sub VA was it not?Aside from that I cannot think of any subs in the '03 cartoon.
Those two Shredder voices are during my favorite episode stretch of any Ninja Turtle media and probably the one thing missing is Avery's voice but one can't have everything I suppose.

In all honesty, I never cared for Donatello's alternate. Sounds like he's trying way too hard to be Barry.
As for Raph...oh god...horrible! Even as a kid I couldn't stand hearing alt Raph's voice....but only for the European Vacation eps. The others weren't bad at all.I did not know that there were 3 Arnold voices.Just two.It was something about the first actor's voice changing because of puberty so he voiced Wolfgang. My fav Arnold voice is the first one. I didn't care for the others as much. Crazy how fast his voice changed, though. When I saw he was voicing the university senior...I mean 5th grader, Wolfgang, I was surprised.Surprisingly enough Gerald's voice gets a sudden change as well yet it was the same actor.I don't think it was that sudden, but they did focus an ep around his voice changing, so it was easy to keep the voice actor around.
Hm, speaking of Nicktoons, Twister's voice from Rocket Power changed in the show, but they didn't change his voice actor or anything because of it, to my knowledge. They did an episode about his voice changing. He was trying to figure out why his voice was cracking and squeaking and all that stuff, and his brother told him that he broke his voice (just to rile him up). Of course he learns otherwise. They did have another voice actor for him later on, but not sure why. Maybe the voice actor couldn't voice the role anymore or something (but I hated it since he sounded too young and whiny to me). I think Sam's character had about two or three voice actors.

I too thought Greg Burg's Don sounded too much like Scooter. I was half hoping Howie Mandel's Skeeter will show up to complete the set.

Actually, Arnold had 4 voice actors. The first for seasons 1 and 2, the second for seasons 2 and 3, the third for seasons 4 and 5 and the fourth for just the April Fools episode in season 5. I too didn't notice how his voice changed at first when I saw the first season 4 episode.
And here's another TMNT character, High Tech in season 10. To me, he sounded nothing like High Tech.

I believe the Hey Arnold! Problem is obivious as it was in the Charlie Brown specials. Hiring kids to voice the characters in somethinh that is ongoing. Its best to hire a young adult/adult to voice the children characters just because of the problem of not being able to mantain voices.
As for Hi-Tech in his one scene starting off season 10 it was Cam Clarke after Rob Paulsen walked away following Doomesquest.
