What did you like least about the red sky episodes?
The lack of familliar characters in the last two seasons. It's just really hard to decide what was worse. The show was got so boring after the age of Dregg began.

Pretty much everything.
I wished that Mikey could've gotten his 'chucks back after he had them replaced with a grappling hook in season 4...
I wished they have not had a red sky either. It was constantly night.
That's a lame way to make a series dark.

I would not say boring like Gobo said, but the 8 season 8 episodes( it was too darn short!!!!) were amazing even if only half had Shredder and Krang. However, after that Dregg was dull and Carter was unneccessary and annoying. Tony Jay deserved better than this horrible character! It was unneccessary to remove the Channel 6 cast and Shredder and gang for a change of pace as season 8 proved! It should have had more familar faces or had Berserko, Dark Water Inc. and Krakus appear more than just ONCE! All characters had potential to be reoccuring players! Not only the under utilzed character of that season not continuing the older reoccuring characters no longer apart of the show not Shredder's group or Channel Six but the likes of Mondo Gecko, Usagi who was never sent home, and the Punk Frogs. Big Louie might have consolidated the underworld under him or see Slash or Leatherhead again. I guess my rant is saying the characters that were focused on were forced in seasons 9 and 10 and there other characters that should have returned that did not that had potential, arguably more so than Dregg and Carter could ever hope to have.

The fact that the series ended.
I personally love the Red Sky, but for personally symbolic reasons. I'm a huge DC Comics fan, and whenever they have a world-ending or universe-ending event, it is usually preceded by two things: A feeling of creeping tension and impending doom throughout the stories, and the skies turning red. Most specifically, it was used in the Crisis On Infinite Earths storyline where not just worlds, but entire parallel universes were destroyed, preceded by a blood-red sky.
Since the last two seasons of the OT were "the end" of that TMNT "universe", I always found the Red Sky as VERY fitting. But I might be the only one who made that mental connection.

The lack of familiar villains, so another vote for Dregg.
The red sky was also a bit disturbing. I liked the idea of making the series darker and having some continuity, but they didn't nail it like they did with the 2003 series.

I really disliked it the first time I saw it, but I've mellowed on it since then. I think the series really needed a shift, and the new visual style was pretty cool even with the inconsistent animation. I wouldn't even mind that they phased out the old villains eventually if they had been replaced by someone really cool or menacing. Although they tried to make Dregg that dangerous threat it didn't really work for me. The Red Sky seasons were pretty darn good at their best and still entertaining at their worst. I'm looking forward to the Season 10 release. I haven't seen all of those episodes.

I don't know how the hell people find these seasons boring. They had a more consistently written plot and tone then past seasons and there was more fighting.
Dregg was a fine villain although I do think he and Shredder should have co-existed.
I saw these seasons for the first time when I was only 11 and I thought the darker tone was the coolest thing ever. The OT ended on a high note.

We didn't even have one new episode per month on average, no wonder I was simply enjoying reruns on USA at that time. Dregg has grown on me since he finally gives a real threat that Shredder was missing since the early seasons as he became too comedic. I instead voted for the abandonment of the Technodrome since despite the dark tone, the Technodrome never really had a real fight, even in Turtle Trek. It is sort of "proto-2k3" in tone. I enjoy the updated theme song, even more so than the new Nick theme. It shows that this wasn't the Simpsons where characters don't age, as the Turtles/April clearly look a bit older. The fighting is also more serious and the Turtles use their weapons more than earlier in the series.

Dregg was great in Season 10 but I imagine the whole posing-as-a-hero charade got annoying fast. That brought Season 9 down a bit for me. I hated how the Turtles had fought to be recognized as heroes only to have it brought down with the Channel 6 building, Dregg and their new mutations. Where were the supporting characters too, like Dirk Savage? Krakus was supposed to be in Season 9 but that got changed to Landor and Merrik.

Make an "Other" option. What I disliked most was the design changes to the turtles, like their more angular heads, and that we could see green in the eye slits of their bandanas.

Simliar to all the TNBA re-designs in 97. Like the Joker and his eyeballs, which they later acknowledged and changed him back to his original design in JL.
The Technodrome's demise didn't help, especially when Shredder and Krang became legitimate threats, again. I mostly don't care for the reduced episode order. Because, while reduced episode order means the writers can't waste time with endless filler (hello, Season 3), it also means it can't truly explore certain plot or character aspects, particularly in Season 8, when the writing structure had changed so drastically. After 7 seasons as a humor-based series, an 8 episode season isn't quite enough to explore the extent on such sweeping changes and affecting all its past elements and characters (save for few exceptions, like the Rat King).
(Plus, the wasted opportunity of not putting Karai into the mix, as would she be out of place in Red Sky? Oh, well.)
On the other hand, if you add all the Red Sky episodes together, they do make for one standard 24 episode season. In which case, it can somewhat work.

You have to admit that season 9 was weak and gimmcik ridden with Dregg,Carter, and the mutation and the sudden absence of Channel Six News crew and Shredder and company. "Split Second" and "Doomesquest" were well done. Split Second did not need Dregg forced into the end of that one. That episode proved that Dregg hurt the series and that it could still be good without Shredder and Krang around. Doomequest was good because it was nice to see Dregg pushed around and the mutations suppsoedly solved.

He did not go into detail about what he disliked about the actual episodes, he merely said, "everything." I can understand not liking Dregg or Carter or the mutations, but there is a lot in those seasons that has nothing to do with that that's enjoyable. Even if Dregg is the overall villain they weren't always fighting him but his minions or other aliens working for him.

+1.
In recent years, and even back then, I never disliked Dregg. After all, after years of a humorous alien trying to conquer the world (albeit one who could be a real SOB while doing it), one could appreciate the change (plus Tony Jay really sold the role). As Cubed said, the mistake was removing Shredder/Krang, especially as Season 8 re-established them as actual threats, again.
And the interesting part is by the end, Dregg lost his motivation and became obsessive about killing the Turtles, like Shredder often did. And refreshingly, Mung or any minion called him out about that, in light of what happened to Hi-Tech. Granted, Krang did that to Shredder many times, as well, but since the series' tone wasn't as serious whenever he did it, the impact is rather lessened.
As for the mutation aspect, it was a good idea, though, execution-wise, could have been better.

The only thing I really don't like in these episodes is Shredder's voice. Sounds like the guy playing him is trying so hard to sound gruff that there's little to no emotion at all. Really miss Avery here, he had such great range...

Red Sky was a mess.
First of all, I really don't see why they didn't just reboot the damn show. It has almost no connection to any previous seasons, even when Shredder and Krang were in the episodes. The color scheme was totally drab, there were almost no funny moments, the action sequences were pitiful, the music wasn't as good, and even the editing was just totally rushed all the time.
Season 9 did look a little better, but it made me think of Rugrats for some reason. Between Tony Jay, a couple of the musical cues, and a few creature designs, I'm pretty sure some of the creative team worked on both shows. Even though I appreciate season's 9 and 10 for trying new stuff... there was Carter.
Carter is actually not even a bad character, but his introduction and backstory just plain suck. Right from day one, he literally becomes the 5th turtle. I don't think he and April ever properly meet on the show, they just start talking to eachother like they're old friends.
Mutations were cheap, and just stupid. I won't even ramble about them.
One nice thing I will say about the Red Sky episodes is that the jokes at the end of the episodes tended to actually be funny rather than totally moronic and random like before.

I voted Dregg because the Turtles don't really need the big bad to be a fun show. I prefer when they are just thrown into situations and have to deal with them. I was excited when Shredder and Co. seemed to be gone because I thought that it was going to be a shift in the direction of more threatening one off villians, as the saying goes "Keep the tone, lose the nemesis." Instead they just introduced another villian to be the Lex Luthor to the Turtles "Superman."

The Red Sky seasons have some of the best action sequences of the show. Also they definitely had more fighting in each episode than most previous seasons. Season 8 and 10 have the best animation because they switched to a different studio for Season 9. And I thought the soundtrack was awesome.
And I beg to differ on the funny moments. They still broke the wall in Season 8, such as Mike saying, "Does that mean the show will only be half as long next week?"
I will agree forcing Carter into every episode was a mess, and Lord Dregg should have co-existed with the earlier villains, but everything else was fine.

I had to vote for the beginning of the show's theme song being changed. It just started the new show off on a terribly different direction. I was like "Am I on the right channel?" It was weird to see footage from the 1990 movie intertwined with this new darker animation for the turtles. The "red sky" and darkness of the show would be my second vote though. I really didn't like the turn the show made but I still own, or will own after tomorrow :twink:, all of these episodes because I'm loyal to the whole cartoon series. Seasons 8 and 10 are two of the best seasons of the show despite their minimal episode count. Season 9 was fairly average but still decent to watch.
I don't know why people didn't find this appealing when we had 7 seasons of the same thing and the show was starting to look dated compared to B:TAS raising the bar for cartoons.

I concur I felt as if the show was "growing up with me." I didn't love everything about it, but I did like that. I didn't think a new theme or intro was necessary, but I kinda liked the footage from the film included, and that alone sort of necessitated a new song to go with it. Again, not entirely necessary, but I got why they went with it.
I liked the whole Dregg conspiracy angle as a nice change of pace in Season 9, the mutations and Carter less so. I think the problem with Season 9 was that TWO Deus Ex Machinas squuezed into every episode - The Turtles' Mutations AND Carter's last-minute interventions, oh-so-conveniently happening at just the right times - became blatantly obvious after the second week.
And yeah Darkseid was the best thing to ever happen to Super-Friends/Super Powers. That's the show I actually watched growing up; when I saw the 70s stuff later on as a teenager I was like, "The HELL is this mess?"

I CAN NOT stand Mung and the other minions in season 9. He was a major butt-kisser and he was annoying as heck. On the other hand, I was surprised he called Dregg mad on the final episode and not get executed for it.
Edit - I find Dregg one dimensional and a bit too serious. We know bits and pieces of Shredder and Krang's past life, but we don't know crap about Dregg except he was an evil space alien(there were a lot of those in the 90's).

The main things I disliked about the Red Sky eps (and I can only say this from the viewpoint of an adult), was that they phased out the Channel 6 characters and did the unstable mutation thing far too long for my liking. I didn't mind Carter, and it was nice that the turtles had another ally...but his mutation mess I didn't care for either.
As I mentioned elsewhere, CBS (in my area) had already stopped airing the series when it got to the Red Sky arc. I've only seen one Red Sky arc when it was originally run and that was because I was visiting my aunt, and her area still aired Saturday morning stuff in general on CBS (unlike our area which dropped all Sat morn programming for news and Martha Stewart) I didn't see the Red Sky eps in its entirety until about two years ago.

The series could've had a bit of fine tuning or so, the intro when Dregg became the main villain should've said something about him rather than keeping the 'when the evil Shredder attacks' line. They also should've kept Dregg and Shredder and maybe they could team up or something, I mean, the Kraang and the Foot were two different main villains in the 2k12 series and then they teamed up, so if they do it now why didn't they do it back then?

I like the Red Sky seasons. The first episode Get Shredder blew me away when I was 8. Red sky isn't as good as I remembered it, but I thought those seasons had a good mix of action, drama and comedy relief. Eight and ten are still good. Nine was bad, but it still had a few decent episodes.
In season 9, I think the whole Dregg turning the city against the Turtles story arc got boring after a few episodes. I didn't like the new mutations either. Some of the changes introduced in 9 could've been written better. I liked Dregg better in season 10 when he was very cunning at times and fought a lot in that season.
I liked that Shredder was a threat for the first time in years, though he was still easily defeated by the Turtles. The three-way battle between him, Dregg and the tmnt in mid season 10 was great, as I hadn't seen that sort of dynamic on a show before when I was a kid at that time.
Part of the reason why I liked the tone of the 2003 series is because it reminded me of red sky.
Characters from season 8 and older seasons could've been used again such as Usagi.

Went with "Not as humorous/Too dark", only because the tone of the series was it's charm. I don't wanna hear Townsend Coleman playing it straight, there's no fun in that. That's not to say I want it to be all gags & slapstick, but they really took it too far in the opposite direction. Make it a little darker or more serious, sure, but don't entirely neuter the good vibes. Suddenly Krang & Shredder are now terrorist-tier villains, too? What the hell were they doing all those years? I liked Dregg, the mutations, etc, all that new stuff was just fine with me, but it needed a few spoons of sugar, I think. It was cheaply produced, so it's not even like you could really appreciate the new action oriented angle, 'cause it didn't look that great. The sarcasm, dry wit, & puns were what made up for the stiff animation in seasons past, & that crutch wasn't there in the tail-end, so it suffered as a result.

I actually didn't mind any of the things in this poll.
I would also have liked if the animation and fight scenes had been better. Season 9 was a bit too serious at times and needed more comic relief. Maybe red sky should have been a separate entity from the earlier seasons of the 1987 cartoon, as the tone of the show became very different and there wasn't much continuity.

It was definitely in response to the more serious mutant superhero shows. It lost some of the charm the earlier seasons had. I do like the exploration of seasons 8, 9 and 10. You can tell, they were trying to see where else the TMNT could go. The toy line strongly supports this notion. They strayed away from the basic collection and ventured into one off stylized versions to match other toy lines on the shelf.
Its not surprising they went off to do Ninja Turtles the Next Mutation next either.

And I still couldn't figure out as to why the Turtles even had to go through their super mutations to begin with.
Then again, I haven't watched all of Season 9 either. :ohwell:
The idea was that the mutagen they originally crawled through has now gotten unstable and anyone mutated would experience changes. Surprisingly, only the Turtles and Carter had problems and not Splinter. Mondo Gecko withstanding since he had all but disappeared by then. Maybe Mondo had something to do with Donatello's sudden desire to experiment with the mutagen?

I figured that I would eventually re-watch the ninth season at some point, but never felt 'driven' to do so.

My eyes are still very fresh to TMNT, so here's a newbie perspective.
ARTISTIC PERSPECTIVE
I'm currently in my first semester as a graphic design student. And while we haven't really covered color theory as designers, I will say this having studied at least a little art in high school and community college to get my associates:
The shift from using bright colors and more rounded shapes to darker and more angular shapes was jarring. And having to continuously look at it, was physically tasking. Especially the choice in making the sky red, taking the turtles to a darker green, and getting rid of April's jumpsuit.
But seriously, the darker color tones are a pain to look at.
KRANG REPLACED BY DREGG PERSPECTIVE
Now, I love me some Krang. His association with Shredder can only work in this type of universe (though I'm trying to shape up my own perspective), and toward the end of the show, their relationship had changed dramatically. In earlier seasons, especially the first two or three, Shredder would have abandoned Krang after Dregg drained his life force and escaped. He didn't necessarily need Krang at that point, especially since they're both essentially powerless without the Technodrome. But he saves him anyway, protects him until they reached safety, and then shared his own life force to help him recover. Then when Krang loses his walker (until the next episode when this was forgotten about), Shredder seems to throw himself over him when the building they were in collapsed.
(The life force thing brings in a huge issue I have with the "go back in time to retrieve yourselves from the past" story. Why was that necessary if Krang could recover his life force from another person -- someone he could easily call a friend at that point. Why not use that to shoehorn a "FRIENDSHIP IS THE REAL POWER, YO 8) !" Moral of the Day? Why couldn't April and Carter track down Irma and Casey (or even Zack...eeeeuuugh) so they can help the turtles regain their life force. It's corny as a state fair hot dog, but at least it's less bumpy than time travel, and flows better with Shredder helping Krang.)
While I don't mind Dregg as an antagonist (especially with being voiced by Tony Jay), I couldn't even stand to listen to Mung speak. And it's pretty terrible considering the contrast from the gloriousness that is Tony Jay's voice.
I would have liked to have seen Krang and Shredder try to get by without the Technodrome at their hands, and then having to deal with both Beserko and Dregg as contenders for power. Maybe even Krang starting to question if Earth is really worth it anymore after he couldn't compete with the new contender for power.
TONE
Dark tones just...don't suit the Fred Wolf show at all, especially after the reputation it had set up. It works for the 4Kids show, because it was set up that way from the start (and then had a reverse pitfall of trying to be bright and silly in the later seasons), and the Nick show has some balance between the serious and the humorous. But this one? God, no. It was too late in the game to switch gears.
Those things being said, while I would like to see the FW characters in a slightly more balanced setting (still goofy, but able to take a few steps back to breathe after a bout of madness and have some character building), Red Sky went a step too far beyond.
I didn't even watch season 9 because of the double-mutation story, because I didn't care enough to.

Season 9 overall isn't the best, though Split Second and Doomquest are among the best in the series. The animation quality is also among the worst and then there's Carter. But yeah, those two are the ones I watch most.

Split-Second is definitely a great episode and the only reason to put up with the mutations all season. It was the only episode where I recall those mutations being useful at all. Also, that episode was a bit different from the others in the season due to Dregg not being the main focus of it for once.
I also liked that episode where they go to the future and believe Carter had betrayed them. Can't remember its name now. Landor and Merrick holding hands after the Turtles teleport back to their time was quite eerie. The only problem with that episode is that it was completely unrealistic that Carter would be a traitor. Anyone could tell from Dregg's debut episode that he had never met Carter before. And besides, they had already tried to pull that "Carter is a traitor" angle before.

Agreed. I thought The Showdown was a decent episode as well. It was interesting to see the Turtles fight in an arena on an asteroid. Also, Carter got some character development with his rivalry with Jett revealed.

I had forgotten about that episode. Yeah, that one was interesting. Funnily enough, we'd see the Turtles in an inter-dimensional tournament some years later in the 2k3 series. Which reminds me, kinda odd how it took so long for there to be a triceraton episode in the FW series.

The season did pick up as it went on. Watching it when it originally aired would've sucked but with the DVDs it becomes tolerable. How weird!! Jet McCabe ruined "The Showdown" because to me, he was very annoying. The Unknown Ninja was a good setup, then it fell flat only to return in the last three episodes.

A better question is, what did I like about Red Sky. I guess Dregg was a nice addition overall, everything else in the poll I was not a fan of.

I didn't really hate anything about those seasons except the lack of the other characters from Channel 6.
As for Dregg, he was unfairly hated! Great design, perfect voice actor in Tony Jay (God rest his soul), he appealed to the Turtles as much as he fought them (at least at first), chose different villains from time to time who were usually more competent than B&R, established himself differently from Shredder and Krang, etc. etc. I think Tony Jay is enough reason to not hate him. How can you go wrong with Jay?

Tony was easily one of the most talented dudes around, he totally made that character. Wish he were still around to do a guest spot in the Nick series.

Yeah, it's pretty hard to really hate a character voiced by Tony Jay. This is the man who did the only Disney villain who doesn't sing about how evil he is, but how his celibacy is being confused. Not many people could do that. He could even say "I need to destroy the turtles" and make it sound dignified. "Ducks rock" though...not so much...

I agree about Dregg. I thought he was a decent villain, especially in season ten when he was very cunning and fought a lot. He was written better than other cartoon villains at the time such as Sonic SatAM's Robotnik and Spiderman TAS' Kingpin.

The only thing I didn't like was the inclusion of Carter. Just though he didn't really fit in to story. It felt to me like he was jammed into the story. No clear back story to him he was just there and the fact they basically did away with Casey Jones. The only Red sky episode he was in to my knowledge was the cyber turtle episode.
