View Full Version : Was the final episode meant to be the last one?

I say Dregg died at the end. Plus, Splinter tells his turtles their training is complete. Think about it, why would the writer(s) make Splinter say that unless it was meant to be the final episode.
Frankly, I'm tired of seeing Dregg, I bet the producers/writers felt the same way and decided to give him a proper send off, ending the show. All shows must come to an end no matter how good they are. The Simpsons has over 400 episodes and it's ridiculous. I'm glad they end it on the 193th(194th?!?) episode.

Each season (except for Seasons 4-6 in which the popularity assured another season by CBS) was left open-ended, in which the season finale was designed to have an ending that could satisfy the series in case it ended, yet still be allowed to have a new season in case the series got picked up for another season. It just happened to fall at a pretty solid time in which we see the Technodrome abandoned and Shredder and Krang finished off for good in the final season. It could have also worked if the series never got past "Shredder and Splintered," and TMNT would still be known as one of the greatest animated mini-series of all time that just got overlooked. But I feel that Jeffrey Scott was sensing that the decline of TMNT's popularity was thinking "It doesn't look like this will be picked up, so we better give this show a decent send off," and I've heard an interview where the cast knew that that was probably going to be the final episode.

I think they might have known, that's why all the following was wrapped up:
- The Turtles stabilized their mutations
- They get rid of Carter
- They bring back Shredder and Krang
- They show the Technodrome in the final episode along with the defeat of Dregg using Krang's Android body.
I think they did all this because they assumed the show was ending and wanted there to be a sense of closure.

Also, if you count the future in "once upon a time machine" as their real future, then Shredder DOES get defeated for good. I guess season 10 show us how it happened.

I look at that future like "All Good Things", the Turtles have knowledge of how they'll end up and will change the way they go about things so they don't look and act all decrepid.

I have a feeling Dregg survived the explosion. In The Day The Earth Disappeared, which was the second to last episode, he survived the huge supernova explosion. I felt the show could have continued.

Answer me this.....would you rather have Dregg finally perish in that last episode than see more of him on a new season? 16 episodes of his appearance is good enough. He is not a terrible villain, but, I don't want to see his mug in every single episode.

Your hard-on for no Dregg is disturbing. What's the big deal? Did he give your grandad cancer or something?
I wouldnt have minded another season with him in it. He was an interesting change of adversary for the Turtles.

I would have preferred Dregg stayed alive. If you think about it, the portal he entered came from the Technodrome so he ended up in the Technodrome. Considering how destroyed the Technodrome was, Dregg could have summoned his microbots and have them rebuild the Technodrome. I wouldn't want to see Dregg in every episode in a season 11, and I would like to have seen Shredder and Krang take the Technodrome from him and have control of it again.
I think the show would have ended sooner if it wasn't for limiting Red Sky seasons to 8 eps each.
Almost every season wrapped up the major loose ends and gave a conclusion, especiall S1,2 and 3, with the exception of S4 and others that had no real season finale. Most of the stuff wrapped up in S10 was because they didn't want to continue with Dregg or that direction for a S11 but it was still left very open ended for the turtles to continue next season and even for Dregg to return. Overall most shows should be made like this, open ended enough for it to continue but also some closure, I hate when shows end on a cliffhanger thinking that will get them another season and they never do.

Excuse me? Don't take it personal just because some people have different opinions on a character. For your information I like Dregg, but I don't want to see him in every episode in a season.

We didn't get another season, so I say that Dregg is dead. Plus, Splinter finally declares them as his equals in ninjutsu. That sounds like an ending if I've ever heard one.

I think another reason they decided to make season 10 the final season was at some point after the production of season 9 Rob Paulsen left. That might've very well been the final nail in the coffin.

Having watched it about an hour ago, it does kinda seem definitive. Not 100% so, as they *could* have brought it back for one more round, but it does seem like they wanted to close the door on some stuff "just on case".
If it went on for one more season, I expect we would have had less Dregg (but maybe some) and a more definitive ending for Shredder, Krang, Bebop, Rocksteady, and Rat King. But I think *that* season still might have been the end. The last, say, two minutes of the last epsiode should have been better, but it was overall a decent finale.

doesn't get much more final than Splinter saying 'you are no longer my pupils, you are my equals' and the turtles acknowledging that no matter what they face, they always overcome.
I think another reason they decided to make season 10 the final season was at some point after the production of season 9 Rob Paulsen left.
He asked for a raise since he had been on the same payrate since day one. Fred Wolf said, "you can be replaced". Rob said, "let's see you try". Or something like that. I think he said in that interview that he quit so the others could get raises. Fred Wolf is a jerk.

I am aware of the circumstances behind Mr. Paulsen's departure back then, but to me it just feels like losing him cost the series that chemistry that the original cast had since the beginning.

I think they were done with Dregg. Carter was gone, Mung seemed sick of Dregg, and that final attack seemed like a last hurrah.
I could have seen the show go on maybe one more season, I would have preferred 8 more episodes of Red Sky over 26 episodes of Next Mutation.

I think that the final episode was created with the possibility that it very well could end up being the series finale. I do find the final episode to work as a series finale. The original five part mini-series was a lot about Krang trying to get a new body. He had given the Shredder much information about his various weapons and such. He also had given Shredder the knowledge to create the mutagen which lead to the turtles getting their humanoid form. So it's somewhat fitting that it was that same body that Krang wanted so desperately for Shredder to create for him that the turtles would end up using in their final victory.

The final episode in my opinion should have been an all star cast in an epic battle. It would have been Shredder and Krang's final assault on Earth. But that still wouldn't put an end to Krang's rock soldiers. And Shredder and Krang could still theoretically get access to a portal back to Earth if sent to Dimension-X. They were a perpetual threat.
The Technodrome could have been rebuilt. But I think it was the Technodrome's size that caused issues for the writers. What do you do with something that big? The Technodrome is massive. They ran out of places to put it.
One of the things I learned from the series is that Shredder and Krang can still do major damage even without the Technodrome being mobile. And that justifies keeping it stuck for a little while. But I think it was on the asteroid too long.

It makes you wonder, why can't Shredder/Krang come back to Earth some way? The writers treated them as if they were lost in Dimension X somewhere, but couldn't they have just found a spaceship or portal and gotten back to Earth that way?
They didn't wanna go back to Earth without The Technodrome. They couldn't beat the turtles with it. So, they most likely didn't wanna try without it.

Other than killing Shredder and Krang, there was no real way to get rid of them. The writers changed the rules to end the series.
