Interview copy/paste in spoiler threads

Before the 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles', Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird created 'Fugitoid'! This was the story of a scientist who's 'essence' was transferred into a robot and hunted by everyone and anyone. That was 1986!

Fans of the 'robot on the run' can rejoice with IDW's return of 'Fugitoid'! The book (hitting shelves on September 5th (earlier than announced) is drawn by Paul McCaffrey and written by newcomer Paul Allor who spent a little time with Matman discussing this project.

Matman: I'm old enough to remember getting 'Fugitoid' brand new off the shelf. For those who don't know, tell us about Fugitoid.

Paul: Fugitoid is the single most important character in the history of Western literature. Well, except for Screech. Screech, and then Fugitoid. More seriously, Fugitoid is an early character from Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, pre-dating the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles by a bit. In the original story, he was a scientist named Professor Honeycutt, whose consciousness becomes trapped in the body of a robot, and who is pursued by intergalactic factions in an action-filled sci-fi romp.

Matman: So how much different will the IDW version be than the original Mirage?

Paul: Seventeen percent different? Maybe eighteen and a half. I think the IDW team has done a really awesome job of staying true to the characters, while also reworking parts of their back story to create a cohesive whole, and fit in with the unique story they're telling. And I think this issue fits in with that approach. I also want to note that the issue has outstanding art from artists Paul McCaffrey and John Paul Bove. Those guys abso-freaking-lutely ROCKED it.

Matman: So tell us a bit about your anthology book 'Clockwork Vol.1'. Looking over the artist roster I must say quite impressive.

Paul: 'Clockwork' is a collection of short comics, all written by me and drawn by different artists, including JM Ken Niimura, Nikki Cook, Brett Weldele, Ben Dewey, Jesse Hamm -- lots of really awesome people. The stories range from sci-fi to westerns to slice-of-life, all over the map, by design. Put them together, and I like to think of it as a celebration of comics storytelling. I'm incredibly proud of the book, and I love it when new people discover it.

Matman: So dig deep passed the suppressed memories and tell us a little bit about the real Paul Allor.

Paul: We're getting to the tough questions now. I'm a comics writer currently living in North-Central Indiana. I've had some self-published work, but Fugitoid is my first big work-for-hire gig, and I'm thrilled by the opportunity. I'm a big fan of genre work that combines dynamic, action-packed storytelling with a heartfelt, character-driven narrative. That's what I aimed for with this issue, and I truly hope that readers enjoy and appreciate it.

'Fugitoid Micro Series' # 8 will be a full color 332 page comic from our friends at IDW...home of the best smelling comics in the business.

Heh, part of me was kinda hoping that Peter Laird would reveal himself as the issue's writer and shock us all!

I'm assuming it's a typo.

I love typos like these. :]

Man, this has me thinking how it would be sweet to see Honeycutt get an actual mini of his own! :D

So in other words the Fugitoid micro will be 32 pages, instead of 332 pages, right?

Jester

That's my thought, yes.

I'm kind of surprised the page count is even an issue. I mean common sense tells you that the number is a typo when you look at the length of floppies and TPB. I mean that would be one hell of a read too.

I'm looking forward to this issue though. I'd like to have these released more in line with where they come story wise though. I thought this came after Blood Brothers.

Haha whoops! I guess some took me seriously about the 332 pages... Every IDW TMNT and Micro-Series issue has been 32 pages, so yeah... :)

This is actually the Micro I've been looking forward to the most since the 2nd installment was announced! I feel like IDW TMNT will feel right at home with some more sci-fi adventures! Maybe even moreso than the typical Baxter and Shredder fare we've gotten so far.

Thanks for the link OP. Haha, I could imagine trying to stuff 332 pages into a comic bag. :tlol: But even at 32 pages, I'm pretty excited about this one.

And thanks, FoxZerro! I appreciate it. I actually have a few more interviews that should be up in the next few days, including one which will have some preview pages.

I'm about to leave town and be off the Internet until tomorrow afternoon, but I'm looking forward to speaking with people about this issue after it comes out. This has been an awesome opportunity.

(oh, and -- hi, my name's Paul, and I wrote the Fugitoid issue. Just in cast people are wondering what I'm rambling about).

Hi Paul welcome to the 'Drome. Can't wait to read your issue and then address every little problem I had with it to you directly now that you've made your presence known. :twink:

Enjoy your internetless weekend

As someone who already read the Fugitoid microseries (But for obvious reasons, will not talk about it) I can tell you that it IS FANTASTIC and easily the best micro series to date.

I can guarantee that this issue will be the subject of many forum threads after its release!

Talk to you all on Wednesday, as i will NOT post a review until the issue comes out, since i do not want to spoil anything and reduce the enjoyment of reading such a great comic.

Ok, IDW. Hi, Kevin "Jester" McGill here. I write for the www.GoGreenMachine.org blog run by TMNT uber-fan Stephan "Archon Turtle" Reese (no relation to Kyle.) Is there anyway I could get in on this early review stuff? You've seen that I have a relatively good grasp of grammar and syntax, and I'd do you guys justice if you let me preview and review your fine work.

Just saying....

I'm not sure if you've ever reviewed comics, but they send you a pdf of the book a week before release. Actually, I'm surprised GGM doesn't get one to review each month!

I have for GGM. I've reviewed a couple of the Turtle Soup anthologies and a Mirage issue that was previewed for us. :D

But.....what about that Fugitoid? I can't wait to see how IDW re-imagines this classic character. I also wonder how Peter will like it, considering he sees the 'Toid as his baby, and rightfully so.

yea... i'm looking forward to this fugitoid issue too and how peter will feel about it. i'm sure he'll have more than a few words to say about this. i can't wait for this book though... especially since it has krang in it.

Ok, IDW. Hi, Kevin "Jester" McGill here.

Your name would be Kevin...

Seriously though you do have some great insight and it would be nice if you could be included in the pre-release goodness. Especially since you write for GGM.

Awesome! Thanks for the interview, it was definitely an interesting read. I'm looking forward to seeing the IDW version of the Fugitoid...I wonder if I can talk one of my artists into creating the Fugitoid for my Turtles mod....hmm...

Anyway, it definitely seems like the IDW guys have put together a good team to be working on these books. Having a passion for these characters and settings is important. Also, I really appreciate how the IDW folks stop by here to talk with the fans. That's great guys, thanks.

So, has there been any word on what awaits after #8?

Oh man, you guys are in for a hell of a story with Fugitoid. It may actually be the very best IDW micro-series ever, and I daresay it trumps the original Fugitoid comic!
