Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Network: Nickelodeon
Airs: Saturdays at 11am
Premieres: 9/29/12
There are fans of both previous Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated series unhappy with the look and feel of this new series, based on the previews – just as the fans of the gritty black and white comic book were unhappy with the first animated series. It’s the circle of (Turtle) life.
The creators of the new TMNT are not hiding the fact that they are looking to make a fun show with a lot of comedy, so those seeking dark, lethal proceedings should probably look elsewhere. But for kids and adults open to the approach (and let’s face it, it’s no more goofy than the first animated series), there are plenty of classic characters, like Shredder and Krang, on display, while April O’Neil gets a big revamp as a teenager girl herself. The voice cast includes Mae Whitman (Avatar: The Last Airbender, Parenthood, Arrested Development) as April, Jason Biggs as Leonardo, Sean Astin as Raphael, Greg Cipes as Michaelangelo and Rob Paulsen as Donatello – the latter a notable inclusion given he voiced Raph on the original 1980s animated series.

I don't know where these idiots get the idea that TMNT fans are "unhappy withe the look and feel of this series," when most fan reception has been positive so far. We understand its a kids show and it looks fun for what it is doing.
I hope the hatred toward the CG graphic style wears off soon.

They must be reading the replies in their TMNT articles from casual fans constantly complaining that the show has, "N64 graphics," and such.
The sad thing is all those people are in their 20's. It's like everyone aged up from being whiny teens from when the 4kids series started to whiny 20 year olds when the Nick show starts.
It's as bad as the Pokemon fandom whining everytime a new generation of Pokemon begins.

We need to confess ourselves for allowing the negativity to appear on this article. We fans, not the Foot, are the biggest enemies of the Turtles, and need to think upbeat without hassling over the problems. Its a very simple article that at least tells us if there were haters of the original cartoon, there can be haters of a newer series and still be a success. The TMNT universe is like a cosmopolitan big city; its a melting pot of fans, styles, and "neighborhoods" (each incarnation is like a city neighborhood), and certain fans, like demographical groups, seem to be tied to a particular locale. TMNT, or any large franchise isn't any different. Interestingly they spelled it Krang and not "the Kraang", so perhaps the "true Krang" might show up unless if its an error.

But those aren't "real" TMNT fans. They were people who were caught up in the fad of the franchise and never bothered to get back into it after the mid-90's.
I bet all those people who said they were such huge fans of the Turtles never even bought any of the DVDs or read the comics.

Did these whiners even see the new version of the Kraang trailer? The CG animation has improved tenfold since the first showing of that trailer.
I think the people are complaining think those brief clips shown were the final works, when they really aren't. This show is going to look beautiful especially in HD.
At this point the only concern is the writing, hopefully we get some good story arcs and character development...something at least on par with the 4kids series with better humor.

Post tween? So.....Teenagers?
Also die-hard ninja turtle fans that accept different incarnations. Wasn't there a gigantic panic fest a week ago over an old script because 'it wasn't MYYYYY TMNT'?

I was initially a little iffy because I was unsure of how the backgrounds and humans would look. But now that more previews have popped up, I'm not as concerned about the backgrounds. We still haven't gotten much of how regular humans will look, but the turtles themselves look great. The way everything is stylized looks pretty awesome to me. I prefer the sharp stylized look over the show attempting realism, because it would probably look pretty terrible.
I can see why some fans would be upset, people are always quick to jump the gun when beloved franchises get revived.

You ever read the comments on every picture they post on Facebook? The positive ones are far and few between. Almost all the articles on it are also filled with negative feedback. It gets slagged pretty hard. Just because people here will defend a used snot rag if TMNT is scribbled on it doesn't mean the rest of the world is so easily swayed. IGN clearly pulled this information from the general public's reaction to the series which is that it looks like crap.

In the end though what it all boils down to is the kids. I work at Target and the Turtles toys there are all but sold out so we shall see how well it does. I predict a bunch of people tuning into the first episode to see what it's about and then if a drop off will happen it'll happen there. Even though they loath it people will check it out. I think it looks horrid myself but I'll still try to watch at least one episode. If it doesn't deliver it'll drop. Parents who were fans of the original toon could just as easily show their kids that instead if they really wanted.

Compare the first Kraang trailer to the new one, the animation improved tremendously.
Also you do realize those scumbags whining about the new show destroying their childhood are the same idiots who complained about the 4kids series being different from the OT back in 2003?
Those people know nothing! They're the same as those nostalgic Pokemon fans who hate everything after the original Pokemon they grew up with. These are the same whiners who are still signing petitions to get their precious Misty back in the Pokemon anime even though she's been gone for 10 years.

Do you have a point or do you just like to argue with anyone who doesn't think the new series is gold plated awesome? There are people out there who think its crap. They don't care about some new krang trailer. Most of the issues lie in a dislike of the style and the fact its cg period despite the quality of it. You're inclined to disagree but you're not going to change anyone's mind and honestly why do you even care what anyone else thinks? If its so awesome some internet bound nay sayers won't stop it.

Few things...
Most kids who grew up with the 80s TMNT are well into their adulthood now and probably won't be watching the show. So rather they approve means very little. It's only a few fans like myself (and those like me here at the Drome) who were around both then and now who are even paying attention.
So as a former die-hard TMNT fan of the 80s and early 90s, I wholeheartedly love the look of the new show, and I have really liked every single video clip, photo, flash game and comic book shown in the new Nick style!
I think that says a lot since there are other incarnations of the TMNT I have not been so fond of. They are melding the best elements of all past incarnations, from the original comic, to the OT, to the films and later cartoons into an ultimate version. I know there will be some things about it I don't like, but for the most part they seem to be hitting a HOME RUN!
So for my money they have a quality product on their hands. There is only one piece I am worried about here and that is rather kids in the age group they are targeting will like the show.
We have seen shows like Thundercats (2011) that, IMO, were REALLY well done get virtually ignored by kids and has now been cancelled, to my great dismay. I really hope this new show has what it takes to grab an audience.
Nick TMNT has my vote, but I am doubting it can become the same phenomenon it once was from about 1988 - 1994 or so. Back then, TMNT was on free over-the-air tv and every kid with a tv could watch it. Now you need a cable subscription. Some shows like Spongebob can overcome those imposed limitations and become loved worldwide and go on for over 10 seasons. In my dreams, TMNT does the same :p
I do not think IGN has its fingers on the pulse of the world's kids the way they seem to think they do.

Not really. Many of these people actually do still follow the franchise, even if we're all adults now.
You're thinking of fans who aren't real fans, but just say they like TMNT as an 80's fad kind of thing. They know nothing about the franchise outside the main cast and probably don't even remember a single episode of the original toon.

In 1988 and the few years that followed, millions and millions of kids watched the turtles. A large number of them probably received turtles merch over that time, bought VHS tapes, wore costumes, the whole deal. I would consider that a fan.
But I don't believe most of them still care. They might care in the sense that they walk by the toy isle and notice the new TMNT stuff and go, "Oh, look TMNT is back again!" but that would likely be the extent of it.
Why would they not be true fans? Not everyone is like us and clings to these things for years and years. Poeple move on, have families, get careers, not everyone has the time or interest to follow it for decades on end. I wouldn't say they weren't fans, just that their fandom has lapsed or they "aged-out" and that is perfectly okay with me.

Look at the thousands of Star Wars and Star Trek fans that never lost interest in the franchises and are still fans in their 40's and 50's.
Look at the thousands of Batman and Spiderman fans that grew up with the old shows in the 60's and 70's and are still fans today.

That may be true, but TMNT is also much younger than any of them are.
When you realize Batman has been around since the 1930's compared to TMNT from 1984...it explains a lot.

Haven't we had this discussion before? Are you really so dim or deluded to not see that the Turtles, despite my love for them, are not, and never will be as big as Batman. Age has something to do with it, sure, but Batman is a pop culture juggernaut.
Cowabunga Carl

Turtles has never been as big as Batman, Spider-man, Star Trek, Star Wars. For the majority of people it doesn't have an enduring quality. What makes me a fan even now that I'm in my late twenties is the fact I've explored all the different versions. I know the TMNT more then just the old show. Most of the population doesn't.
That is why there isn't a large group crying out for it. I mean if you look at the franchise before Peter sold it it was dying. The comic wasn't selling enough to justify selling at store level, the cartoon was on the way out, and merchandise was just sitting on shelfs. No one but those of us here were clamoring for TMNT. It isn't a cultural icon like those other properties.
I don't want to say it never will be, but it isn't right now. Chances are it wont be either, because a lot of people don't remember the OT fondly now.

I don't know, I wouldn't go so far as to say many folks here enjoy the new design for the turtles simply because they're old fans of the show. I can think of a handful of my old childhood shows which I love just as much as TMNT which are being remade, and I'm very put off by them because I hate their new designs. It doesn't matter how much I adored them as a kid and want to like them now, their new style is so unappealing. For me, it isn't the same with this show, I genuinely like the new style for the turtles and I'm sure others do too who aren't being biased with favoritism.
I've been a fan since the late 80s as a kid, followed all the incarnations, and i love the new look! I love that the turtles finally have unique bodies, i like their facial designs and expressions, i think the new CGI design is perfect. Reminds me of Kung Fu Panda legends of awesomeness, which i enjoy.
CGI gets alot of slack and i don't get it. Do you guys want this show to fail? Hand drawn animation still has a place and should continue on, but it's a new generation! I've loved CGI since Toy Story back in 95!

Yeah I know nothing of animation/visual arts/design because you know my background and education right?.
well you did write that the animation was hideous, The animation is superb, with a lot of stylistic animation combined with subtle movements and second animation. You can clearly see each characters thoughts and emotions in each scenes by not only facial expression, but with body pose as well. The discovery of pizza preview video is a great example of it.
The DESIGNS on other hand is subjective sure. For some it might not be appealing, but it is still a well crafted design, keeping the essential visual design of a ninja turtle ( and other characters) within a modern stylized design heavily influences by other modern animated shows, especially from a lot of the Cartoon Network shows that also have angular stylized designs. The CG models are clean and neat looking as well as being easy to animate and easy to update with future technology.
The only negative I find with the CG models are the textures of the turtles skin, it looks like the same skin texture used in the first promo pictures when they released pictures of the final CG models, and the texture looks very random with the spots and specks. Which makes it look a bit amateurish, or student project-like.
Its not appealing to me and pretty much everyone else who is not an obsessive tmnt fan.
Yes, I'm just an obsessive TMNT fan loving anything with a masked turtle slapped on, nothing to do with being an animation enthusiasts, nope, not at all.
