View Full Version : Did The Turtles Ever Do Drugs?

Obviously they weren't passing a joint around between battles, but did the lean green team have any encounters with psychedelic drugs? I seem to have a vague memory of a turtle (Leonardo or Donny, maybe) taking peyote and having some sort of spiritual quest... or perhaps Splinter used funky herbs to help the turtles travel in their own minds, I dunno. Any of that ring a bell? I swear I remember at least one incident where a turtle tripped out in order to learn a lesson of some sort.

Are you thinking of the Tales of the TMNT 2-parter #12-13, where Leo goes into the astral plane and sees the space monkey and then teams up with 4 different Leo's of different ages?
I remember what you are referring to. In the issue Leonardo says something like, "Master, are you offering me drugs?"
I'm not a chicken! You're a turkey!

If I remember correctly Raph and Mike get high off dentists gas leaking in the Talbot short "It's a Gas". Leo and Don find them lying on the grass laughing at clouds.
Also if it counts I can't remember which turtle popped a pill not knowing what it did in "D'ants Fever". It made him grow in size.

I believe you're thinking of the Tales of Leonardo "Blind Sight" 4 issue Mini.

No, he didn't. You might be mistakenly thinking about the issue where he was being interrogated. The Dr. interrogating him injects him with with phenobarbital, NOT heroin. If this isn't what you're referring to, I'd like some sort of reference.

Was this from the comic where Klunk died? I seem to have a vague memory myself of something like that happening.

Yep. Right after filming wrapped for Cartoon All-Stars.
For real though, not in any issue I've read. Although they've been in plenty of situations so surreal you'd be forgiven for thinking so. (Raphael in Turtle Soup's "Snapper," anyone?)

Do you consider "the Birds, The Bees, And the Turtles" official? If so, Raph smokes a joint in that book right before putting the screws to Ninjara. Just sayin'.

When the Turtles and Honeycutt are at an alien bar looking for transportation, Raph drinks something that makes him loopy.

4Kids series. The crystal power sources...not sure what he means aside from that, though.

the turtles abused pizza like a drug in the OT...
but seriously, you might also be thinking of issue 37 of v1, "Twlight of the Ring." No drugs, but Don gets kinda possessed by a reptile spirit and has a bit of a spiritual journey. Leo thinks he's crazy in that issue, which is an interesting role-reversal compared to the current IDW series, where Leo is the most accommodating to the spiritual reincarnation plot, and Don is the nonbeliever.

For a long time it's been joked about that Eastman and Laird themselves must've been high when they first created the TMNT. Kinda makes you wonder if that's at all true.

This is what I was going to say.
Besides that, Michelangelo alludes to smoking in yes, an OT episode. I don't recall the name of the ep, but I've posted on YouTube the scene. Mikey states "I hate when people smoke and run", which is a common complaint of smokers.

It wouldn't be too difficult to assume that they've all probably tried pot...psychedelic drugs might be a harder sell!

I agree, if you are offended by drugs or anything that's your right but you can at least contribute something to the discussion.
Powder, were you thinking of the Twilight of the Ring?

Raph got drugged by some weirdo in the Tales issue "The Burning Man". Mikey even used to term "tripping balls" when describing Raph's condition lol.

There's that, and Leo also gets drugged via some poisoned caltrops in "Blind Faith" (I believe that's the title; Tales Vol. 2 #5), though it only causes temporary blindness.

I remember an episode of the classic toon where the Turtles were hit with laughing gas. Does that count at all?
Logan

Going by wikipedia (), laughing gas is considered a dissociative drug, so I don't see why it couldn't count.

Oh, I should also point out, there's a back-up story in one of the Tales Vol. 2 issues where Raph is subjected to visions (of a shadowy Shredder, Leo, I think, and himself) by a Foot mystic hiding nearby.
But I can't remember the issue number right now.

Tales #48 "One's Shadow" by Tristan Jones and Kennon James.
The only good thing about that issue lol.

Whaaaaat? That's one of my favorite tales issues. I know the stylized art may leave something to desire for some people, but how often did we get Fugitoid stories? It was at the least very well written, I think. Great to see some depth given to Honeycutt what with him coming to grips with his identity & all. Plus the return of those crab things. They're neat.
