View Full Version : When it just gets too absurd...

Lets face it, as fun as it is to watch the Ninja Turtles some episodes tend to have a sort of "What the hell did I just watch?" quality to them.
I always thought that episode with the Neutrino baby was especially weird. For one thing we didn't even get to see Kala, Dask or Zak in that episode. You think they would've been involved. Instead we get these leaders that look like rejects from an Elvis Presley convention, and the 50s hipster lingo coming from their mouths was more excruciating to listen to than what we typically heard from the regular Neutrinos!
Both episodes with Irma's boyfriend Howie were also pretty hard to handle. The idea of having an episode where somebody sings was pretty cool, but they couldn't have come up with a more obnoxious character. I would've preferred it if April or one of the Turtles took up singing.
That all being said, I do enjoy the wackiness we got from characters like Mr. Ogg and that Freddie Kruger knock off, but what made those episodes funny was that the Turtles themselves were aware of how weird it all was.

Tattoo's origin in the show was by far the most bizarre thing they ever did.
A normal hamster somehow got mutated into a human Japanese sumo wrestler? What the hell?

Tell me about it! It's like according to the writer's logic every villian has to either be some kind of mutant, alien or robot!

Tattoo being a human sumo wrestler as the result of a hamster being mutated was absurd.Tatoo should have been saved for a sequence in another episode that had nothing to do with him being Shredder's mutant agent.Perhaps trying to off the president of sumo wretling federation for making him look bad and the turtles and the turtles happen to be across the street at a pizza parlor to stop him taking thre minutes out of an episode. Instead it was the most bizarre attempt to throw a toy into a cartoon to promote it.
Another sequene that bothers me is in The Sword Of Nowehere, early to mid season 3. At the end an alien antique collector interrupts the battle to claim the sword as a cheap end to well done episode. It felt like it was unneccessary, stupid, and was a let it down.
The only characters that were too much were Zack and Mr. Ogg. I wish to this day that Zack was not used in my favorite episode Night of The Rogues. The turtles relying on allies and they call him instead of Mondo Gecko or Usagi if it was areach to have the Punk Frogs as a backup team? He was fine in The Great Boldini but was plain annoying in Zack and The Alien Invaders and I am only so crazy about Bebop And Rocksteady Take Over The Universe.
The episode Raphael Kocks'Em Dead is embarrassing to a fan who perfers Rob Paulsen's Raphael. The idea of Raphael going to a comedy club and being a stand up bothers me so the whole episode is hard to swallow.Oh, and I loathe Donatello's Badd Time.
That is everything that I am embarrassed about in my favoritism of the 1987 cartoon. Well,I didn't care for Michelangelo(my favorite) and Leonardo getting nabbed alot.
I have no probelm with the Nuetrinos like some fans. I really like Hot Ordding Teenagers From Dimension X,The Dimension X Story, And Attack of The Nuetrinos. That three out of five because of the stellar plots! While the other two are okay.

I think Mr. Ogg might have been the worst character in the series. I could tolerate Zach but even as a kid I thought Ogg was just way too silly.

Step 1) Ask everyone in the studio to put an idea in the hat.
Step 2) Once you've run out of ideas, take out the hat.
Step 3) Ding! You've got an episode!
That's how I think these reject episodes came to be.

I think everyone is missing that super weird mothball floating episode.
I think it was the second Yusagi episode.

Your right, that was the second episode that hada great build up and the resolution was cheap and left me upset. That was "Michelangelo's Birthday" which was the episode right before the first of thet wo Usagi episodes that you are referring to. I don't mind that the turtles are turned helium-like,but it actual gives credit to '87 Don's "power of positive thinking can make anything work" concept in Turtles Forever. I called it a cheap plot device. It like Sword To Nowhere was a great episode but had a crappy resolution.

All my life, I thought the original cartoon was the "crazy" version of the turtles. Then the ultimate collections started coming out and I got a taste of the original comics.
Nothing is crazy anymore. All is forgiven.
Also, um... OT. That stands for "original toon?"

Yep.
The first time I saw the ending to "The Ninja Sword Of Nowhere" I was more than a little shocked. It was just so random and off the wall that it was laughable.

Archie handled Tattoo better. No mutant, just ordinary sumo wrestler.
