What do you guys think? What aspects of our fandom rub you the wrong way?

For me it's 2 fold:
1. The "fans" who were only really on board the franchise as kids and have "moved on" but feel the need to come behind the new stuff Nick is doing and saying, "This isn't the Turtles. CG sucks! This is gay!" So mainly anyone who posts comments on Youtube saying they're a "Huge TMNT Fan"...

and the second is kinda like it...

2. Fans of one part of the franchise at the detriment of all others. I can understand not liking a particular aspect of the franchise, but to speak nothing but bile about how boring all the Mirage books are, or how un-grim/dark all other iterations are when compared to Mirage (and Image). We get it, the Mirage books aren't your preference, no need to bludgeon us to death with it.

I'd have to agree with you on point one a 100%. People who haven't been following the franchise or even realize where it came from past the OT making comments about this new version annoy me. I don't even bother looking at the comments on the youtube videos anymore.

Like you said the second kind of goes with the first and I agree with you there. I mean there are aspects of TMNT I'm not a huge fan of. However I'm not going to focus on it and continually bash it because of that. Not everything about this property is going to appeal to me all the time. Heck even sometimes the stuff I like isn't going to be liked by others. I get that. But for the love of all that is holy do people need to go on about?

But what really bothers me is when people start talking about the Turtles and mention that they are a children's franchise and are made for kids. I hate hearing that from tons of people. It is clear they have never actually looked at TMNT and where it came from. Their whole view is based off of the toys and cartoon. It drives me freaking nuts.

The "nostalgic" part of the fandom is the same problem with ANY fandom that goes on for a long period of time....the Pokemon, Power Rangers, etc. fandoms are just as bad when it comes to, "only liking the early seasons," and thinking everything else sucked.

For TMNT, its mostly the original cartoon, even though I bet all those people stopped watching halfway into Season 4 and never even revisited it when the DVDs came out.

People who buy something TMNT and then come ask us the value so they can resell it for assumed massive profits.

It's true, for a lot of people out there, anything that does not fit their idea of what TMNT should be will be panned simply for being different. This is mostly true for people who grew up with the original toon and the first movie.

I am one of those people, but I don't share those extreme views. I have my favorites, but I don't outright dislike any iteration... well, okay, next mutation is kinda hard to appreciate at times. But I mostly just overlook it, not bash it.

Actually, I seem to notice a lot of 'oldschool' fans taking an intense liking to the new Nick show and toys. I predict it will be a big hit and win over most people. The ones that keep their minds open, anyway.

I only want what's best for the fandom. Why do you think I'm trying to get the 4kids series re-released on DVD? I am also sure at least SOME of my e-mails, along with many others, is what got Lionsgate to include the two skipped episodes on the Season 10 disc.

Also besides Next Mutation, I really do enjoy virtually every TMNT universe. I loved the cartoons and the comics, and the Nick show looks great.

It's pretty much this for me. People who when talking about TMNT sound as if they're a huge authority on the propertyor are the biggest fans, but don't know much about the franchise past the OT, first 2 movies, and most of the original Playmates toys (I may or may not be referring to most of the people on the What the Shell and Turtle Power podcasts).

It's fine if you're a big fan of one facet of the franchise and that's all you're interested in, but don't pretend to be some sort of uber-fan who has some sort of say on the franchise as a whole.

I don't even consider them fans. You watched a cartoon for about 2 years and played with some toys and now you can't even remember the names? You're not a fan, you're an anus.

There are members here who could be a little nicer about pointing some stuff out to the newer members, but it is also up to the newer members to read the rules and follow them. When I hear about people in foam TMNT costumes, that seriously peeves me. When I was at SDCC09 (probably my only Con ever), I went to the TMNT25 panel. At the end, when the the costumed characters came out and this room full of nothing but adults went ape****, I nearly died of embarassment. :sweatdro: Even as a kid, execs taking the action-oriented pilot miniseries and dumbing it down for the preschool crowd ticked me off. I guess that'll never change.

Anyone who elevates their fandom to scholarship. For example, all those ______ and Philosophy books sort of annoy me (The Simpsons and Philosophy, The Daily Show and Philosophy).

I do however appreciate thoughtfulness regarding the TMNT, and this board is a great example of that, but the bottom line is that it is all merely entertainment for the sake of it.

As has been stated before and I'm going to try and say it again as nicely as I can figure how, it isn't about people coming to the franchise, or not having having collections, or even knowing everything about the franchise. It is when people start acting like they know everything about the franchise while not having exposure to it or actually having experienced facits of it trying to put off that they are better then or know more then others. Stating things as fact when often times they are opinion.

That is probably my biggest pet peeve is people posting or talking as if they are the authority and know without a reason of doubt what is going on. Everyone here is entitled to have an opinion, heck I love reading what others think. People just need to stop acting like they are the authority or end all to end all.

I agree people shouldn't state stuff as facts unless they know. But hey, maybe people have asked people who are a part of the TMNT the same question, and they know the answer. Maybe I'm getting defensive because I posted an answer to a question, and I'm new to these boards, whatev (yeah haha, I said whatev).

Here's the problem I think everyone has (no matter what you're a fan of). You wear a t-shirt, someone comes up to you and starts the "I'm a huge fan of _____" conversation. Then after about a minute of conversation you realize, they were just trying to be nice or cool with you, damned if I know. This used to bother me, but then I realized that those people help you realize how big a fan you are.

I have no problems with people who some would call "casuals" as long as they don't act like they have all the answers. I know I knew next to nothing outside a nostalgic love of the FW series and the Playmates figures of that era when I signed up here, and I've learned a great deal because of this forum. So as long as a person with a casual enjoyment of the Turtles doesn't act like that means they know every facet of the franchise, they're welcome here. I mean, how else are you gonna "move up the food chain" unless you start with a basic knowledge of the franchise.

For me it's all the fighting about which version is better. Truth is, there's not a "better" version. Some people prefer Mirage, some people prefer 2K3, and a good majority prefer Fred Wolf. None is better than any other, they're just different. At the end of the day, we're all TMNT fans.

Jester likes this!

If it weren't for some of these we wouldn't have others. Mirage begat Fred Wolf, Fred Wolf begat Archie, both series together begat the movie universe (most notably the 1st movie.) The success of the franchise as a whole lead to Image, Next Mutation, the 4Kids series (which again took cues from primarily both the FW series and the original Mirage books). If one of the early iterations had failed, we wouldn't be looking at the new stuff from Nick and IDW.

The thing about the whole "people who think they know everything about it" is that that's the easiest way to bother fans of something. Trolls will do it intentionally, like "confuse" Star Wars with Star Trek when talking to a SW-fan or Trekkie. Others have no idea how little they know.

I'll admit I know little of the comics, but I'm not going to criticize them. I grew up with the campy Fred Wolf cartoon, but grew to love the darker done of the first movie. And when I finally gave the 03 cartoon a chance (didn't give it a chance back then because I grew up with the campy toon), I actually liked it.

You gotta be open-minded about other interpretations. I was also iffy about Batman: Brave and the Bold until friends told me I should look at it as a fun alternative, rather than another attempt at the quintessential Batman cartoon.

Yes, I agree about the people who bash the other incarnations and act like the one they like is "better" than the others. All of them are different, and even though I wasn't fond of Next Mutation or the Fast Forward and BTTS series, I don't think of any incarnation as "better" than another. I grew up with the FW toon and came back for the 4Kids toon. Both of them are good in my book and have different tones to them (one's a fun loving and comedic toon while the other is a darker interpretation). People need to have an open mind and stop bashing every incarnation they don't like.

So many multiverses can create a divided fanbase, but at least on this board, most fans like most of the material. To me, it's the divide between the casuals and the dedicated fans that drive me nuts, since they tend to read media that has a more negative tone more than the real fans, knowing only the important stuff and avoiding the latest Alien Turtles prank. I also hate people that still blame that TMNT is uncool ever since the third movie, Next Mutation, or Image since all formats have improved since. Its not any different than civil rights, since having equal opportunity for all will contribute to the best fandom rather than discriminating on a single series or group of fandom.

On the earlier subject of 'bashing' mirage constantly. I never go into mirage discussions just to bash. I don't even look at them because I have no interest in it but if it comes up in another thread you bet your ass I'm going to speak for myself.

Also Zarius is right on the trolling thing. It seems like posting anything besides 'cool!' or 'agreed!' is considered trolling but oh wellz. Not like I give a sh*t.

I am a fan of the original cartoon from the late 1980s and the Playmates action figures of that time. As well as the SNES Game "Turtles In Time" and "Tournament Fighters". BUT it delights me very much that after that the Ninja Turtles continued their existence, although in another interpretation, from other creators. If this were not so, the conversations would find an end soon, and forums like this would be boring. In my opinion every early fan should be glad that the Turtles are still currently, after more than 2 decades. Otherwise they would be a letdown, as Biker Mice from Mars ore something else...

First. Don't compare TMNT to Pokemon.

It's very similar. The casuals obsess over the original TMNT cartoon and turn a blind eye to everything else, just like those overly nostalgic Pokemon fans only like the original 151 pokemon and their precious Ash/Misty/Brock trio.

In fact the Pokemon fandom overall has almost the same exact problem as the TMNT one....its divided between overly nostalgic fanboys who hate anything that came after their childhood, the hardcore fans, and then the new little kids who grow up with the newer stuff.

I'm sure there are only a select few who like EVERYTHING TMNT. I'm sure many dislike NM, Coming Out of Their Shells, and the 2 Turtle Tunes videos. BUT even though we don't like them, we can appreciate them as yet another unique take on the Turtles, even if the end result is a steaming load.

I'm definitely guilty of this  at this point I can't think on any possible version of the TMNT that I just wouldn't watch.

It's long been my experience that the bigger a fandom, the more in-fighting and rage there's gonna be amongst the members of any community about it. Sometimes it's just a fun amount of bashing heads into one another like a pack of Pachycephalosaurus', but other times you get people who seem to LOVE the arguing so much that you wonder what's left of their original liking of said franchise. This thread shows some of it on it's own.

So really, all the arguing actually doesn't bother me QUITE as much as it normally would. I'm too used to it from everywhere else I go online. It's to be expected at this point.

That said, there are certain attitudes that bug me a lot though, and hopefully I can point these out without any particular person coming to mind, but -

1) The idea that if you aren't a fan of the original Mirage stuff, then you're not a TMNT fan at all. Or any kind of 'Mirage or bust' attitude. It's just a simple fact that a LOT of people's first experience was the more kid-friendly stuff like the OT or the movies. I don't see why that's such a big deal. Some of them, like myself, will eventually find themselves as such a lover of TMNT that they'll want to check out stuff like the original comics, but I really couldn't blame someone from balking from it due to certain attitudes either. It's the same reason it took me forever to give subbed anime a chance.

And speaking of 'kid friendly'...

2) The idea that because one part of the franchise is 'for kids', then it can be easily dismissed and ignored. I just don't get that. Even the precious Mirage stuff, no matter how violent it is, isn't exactly the 'deepest' reading material abound, so I still think of it as a kid's product just the same. Just being more serious and gritty doesn't make something any less for kids, nor does something being aimed at kids diminish how good it can be. Harry Potter, especially towards the end, is a great example of both.

All right, vent over. I can think of one other thing that irks me slightly, but it's a very minor thing that I don't really get up in arms over, so it's not worth noting.:tlol:

I meant, I will watch even if I don't fully enjoy it. Sort of like NM or vol 4, I know it sounds stupid, but I really like the characters and sometimes that's all there is to go around and I prefer taking what I'm given that nothing at all.

I dislike how some people base their opinions on aspects of the franchise without actually reading/watching them.

Some people never read the Image series and assume its bad because of the turtles mutilations, some don't watch Fast Forward because they hear the negative stigma about it, (which no longer matters, the original complaints were about Season 5 being skipped for it), or the complaints about how the OT was too kiddy.

BubblyShell22
09-26-2012, 07:26 AM
For your information, I did watch all of Fast Forward, so stop assuming that I just read reviews and refused to watch it. I sat through the whole season and only liked two episodes. So, stop forcing your opinions on others and acting like we're so narrow-minded just because we don't have the same opinion as you.

If anything, you're the most annoying thing about the TMNT fanbase.

Turtlecest squicks me personally, but, well, I can't get morally worked up about it. Slash between unrelated characters doesn't bother me.

Otherwise, uh:

Anyone who insists that female fans are a special kind of crazy--or the only ones in the fanbase who are crazy.

Loud purists for any side of the franchise. It's fine to dislike change, but...stuff happens. Try not to rain on the parade of folks who actually like it.

At the same time, adopting a pose of moral superiority if you never complain about change.

Insisting that the OT or any of the other "lighter" iterations should be darker and edgier, or actually were.

Those who are so fixated on the "dead end" factor in the Turtles' existence revealed in "Sons of the Silent Age" that that they bristle at the idea of any female mutant character ever, even when it would be so easy to say that if their species are incompatible, they can't breed.

Those who flip out at the idea of discussing social or political issues re: the franchise and fandom.

Anybody, anywhere who uses a "true fan" argument or lines up criteria for it.

Those who treat "Turtles Forever" as a way for the 2003 series to make itself look good. I don't mind if anybody disagrees with the accuracy of TF, but a spiteful spirit was not there to that extreme.

And, I try to make room for most fannish views, but it annoys me when others claim that FW Baxter is an innocent victim, ignoring all of his malicious, destructive and wicked tendencies.

Original TMNT Cartoon Fan
04-12-2013, 07:49 AM
The "nostalgic" part of the fandom is the same problem with ANY fandom that goes on for a long period of time....the Pokemon, Power Rangers, etc. fandoms are just as bad when it comes to, "only liking the early seasons," and thinking everything else sucked.

For TMNT, its mostly the original cartoon, even though I bet all those people stopped watching halfway into Season 4 and never even revisited it when the DVDs came out.

If it wasn't for nostalgic fandom, this forum would probably not even be around.

As far as these forums go the only thing that bugs me is. People who try to police the forums that are not Mods. I not talking about mentioning NICELY to someone new who may have unknowingly broke a rule. I'm talking about the people who constantly seek out infringements or even things they think are infringements and start filling a thread with comments that don't need to be in the thread. If you disagree with something someone did report it and let a mod deal with it cause otherwise your just going to either chase away someone from the forums or cause an argument in the thread.

As far as the Fan-base goes i agree with what people have said about people stating that Version of turtles is better then another without actual seeing the version they are bashing. I personally have seen all OT toons, All the movies, All NM, and the first season of 2k3 (can't get my hands on the rest). So i can safely state my opinions on those aspects of TMNT. But thats all they are is my Opinions, so feel free to disagree and make your own opinions.

If the Turtle Franchise was a Pizza party we would all chose a different kind of pizza. i may not agree with your choice to eat just plain cheese pizza but making fun of you for it or trying to prove my pepperoni pizza is better is just petty. Plus its a Party so its meant to be enjoyed and for people to have fun. And so, at the end of the day we all love Pizza... and by pizza i mean TMNT... well pizza as well as TMNT.

Right, exactly.
I mean, back then the Turtle was named around the time we had other characters like "Ripster" and "Jaws", "Greasepit", "T-Bone" and "Razor" and so on.

Unfortunately there is something out there that coined the phrase "slash" but even so, I seen slash pairings with TMNT heroes and villains, straight or not, where I'm just like "No... no, who would think of this?!" lol

I freely admit, Turtlecest is the thing I hate most about this fanbase. I know that because of how many and diverse the incarnations of this series are, there are going to be plenty of people who prefer certain incarnations and look down upon those dissimilar to it, but most of these people don't go on and on about this jaded attitude; much of the fanwork and posts they contribute is rallying behind the versions they do like instead of beating up on the ones they don't. Turtlecest proprietors are also rallying behind the version of the series they like...but it's a version that doesn't really exist, and is a spit in the face of every official incarnation. The one consistency to TMNT incarnations is, in essence, a strong team dynamic; making the turtles gay, incestuous lovers derails that worse than even Venus De Milo could.

I don't have much exposure to the TMNT fanbase ( outside here, and even then, I really don't know much about you guys) but the usual TMNT fan I know doesn't like anything that's not 80's, OT, or Konami made if it's a game.

One thing I hate are the polls of "Who's the favorite/least turtle," and it always changes. To have people say things like, "Oh, well Mikey is the least favorite," is only true to them, but not by many. I think they're all popular for who they are, but nothing is completely definitive. Leo may have been a least favorite, but now he's getting more attention. Don may sometimes be considered a least favorite, but again, that changes, too. The polls always change. I mean, I don't hate the polls (especially if we have ones here:twink:), but I hate when someone states it's the truth. Someone who was once at the bottom can soon be at the top. I guess that all depends on age differences.

But, yes. I hate Turtlecest. First off, the turtles are not gay. Second, they are brothers. Why on Earth would they make out with one another like that? Gross.:tgrumble:

I have not seen that much. However, one thing that is irritating to me is a number of those who perfer the black and white comics to anything else think their perferred iteration is the dominate one and/or the source material. Three sketches from 1983 are the actual source material. It was merely the first medium in which the TMNT appeared. People who think thier perferred version is king and all others are pathetic in general is annoying but this is something almost exclusively with the b&w comics fans. I had very limited interation with anyone who cared much of anything for the comics that were not Archie so I can only guess the small group makes itself vocal here and really irritating to the other media fantaics and putting them down like myself who don't care much for thier "superior" version. There is a reason it only gets so much attention and was only so popular.

I get sick of the tool pulling the source material card all the time to justify everything. Its simply the first media it appeared in. I have always seen the Michelangelo drawing,Leonardo drawing, and group shot as the source material from which Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles#1 came from. Its et another thing that makes the Ninja Turtles a unique super hero. End of story.

You need more than a series of drawings to make source material. TMNT issues 1-11 were out by the time we got the Fred Wolf series or the first movie.

There actually is a scene where a Turtle flips off someone...just look at Mikey's fingers in the "Fellow Chucker" scene.
Oh, really? Well... Yippee-ki-yay, fellow 'chucker.

They are not! The drawings that two dudes did in the living room trying to crack each other up is! The blak and white comics are merely the first medium the Ninja Turtles appeared in.

By that idiotic sense of logic, the source Batman is a blond guy in red spandex, domino mask and black bat wings. Or Source Batman is the Bat, a murderer dressed as a bat from the Broadway play The Bat

Recreation of Bob Kane's concept drawing.

The source of Superman is a bald villain with telepathic superpowers

I get sick of the tool pulling the source material card all the time to justify everything.

What can I say but... the truth... hurts?

It's really a strange conundrum when someone despises the source material so much that they have to rationalize it in their mind as something other than that. You enjoy and find most endearing one of the children's spinoff shows... it's great, it's fine, I get it.

So the first drawings Peter and Kevin did are the source material? Gimmie a break!

What about Shredder? What about April? What about Splinter? What about every other character that originated in the black and white comic book?

I would say that the first drawings were inspiration for the original comic books, but the comics were the source material for every single incarnation after.

MikeandRaph87 must have never seen Turtles Forever. That explains it quite well.
