There have been many series, many different companies, many different artists and volumes and eras in the turtles' history.

My personal favorite comic incarnation is (vol.3) the Image run, partly because that's the series I first started reading in comic book form. It was also fast paced and CONSISTENTLY well drawn by Frank Fosco. I really hope IDW collects this run someday in TPB form.

Each version has it's own merits worthy of appreciation, hence I love all incarnations, with Hedden & McWeeney's on the lower rungs.

Absolute bottom rung.

Loved the first 3 years of Mirage Volume 1. Issues 19 - 21 and 48 - 62.
Tried Mirage Volume 2, did not enjoy it as much. Mirage Volume 4 the same.
Some Mirage Tales of the TMNT were good. Tristan Jones' Gang Wars in particular Vol 2 issues 36, 50, 56, 59, 61, and 64.
Did not read enough of the Image Volume 3 to give a good opinion.
The Archies we fun when I was a kid, but they do not stand the test of time for me.
I am really loving IDW's reboot. Definitely the Ultimate TMNT Universe.

I don't view each separate volume as an incarnation. There are 3 comic universe:

-Mirage
- Archie
- IDW

That's it. Most series fall under Mirage continuity while IDW is the reboot.

What about 2003 comics?

What about 2003 comics?

And the TMNT Magazine shorts and TMNT newspaper strips? :P

Maybe incarnation was not the best work, but the intent was clear.

Is Vol. 3 that good? Haven't read much of it. Should I?

TMNT Adventures, was the only I ever cared for because it was Other Media friendly with respect to Mirage Studios output. I enjoyed its character set and had some great storylines! IDW is slowly grwoing on me with its excellent use of Krang and Slash and excellent twist with Fugitoid. Perhaps this year if we get anything like Future Shark Trilogy or Raw Power Trilogy and the promise of The Forever War....then IDW might just surpass Archie.Hope so!:tsmile:

It seems to be either loved or hated by most fans. Not many seem in the middle. I like it for the fast pace, heavy violence, guest appearances, radical changes, more adult tone, & the art of Frank Fosco (which featured lots of black and white contrast- very stylish). If you can get past the turtles being 'mutilated', you'll prolly dig it. That seems to be the main reason some folks don't like it.

Thank you. That's sort of what turned me off. I'll give it look.

Mirage: Best incarnation.

IDW: Best reincarnation. (Har-har-har!)

The "canon" issues of Mirage Vol. 1/Tales Vol. 1 is the best era for me.

But I did enjoy the other volumes, what I read of Archie, and I'm loving IDW's take so far.

To add on top of what Powder said, if you're a fan of Michelangelo you'll like it - he had the most character development in this more than any other.

The only true flaw was the "ZOMG XTREEEME" 90's-itis all comics had back then.

Nothing in Image was out of the ordinary. So Donatello gets temporarily turned into a cyborg...we all knew he would turn back to normal. Raph gets his face scarred...but it was healing.

The only thing I would change is prevent Leo from ever losing a hand.

Archie for me, mainly for nostalgia, it's the Turtle comic I read as a kid and grew up with.
I do like the Mirage books I've read, was surprised by how much I liked the Image run once I actually got past the "horrible mutilations" and actually read it, and IDW's an interesting hodge-podge of what worked in most of the other incarnations.

Then there's poor Dreamwave, but it never had a chance... :P

I'd say I'm in the middle. I enjoy it (what I've read), love the art, the characterization, and get a kind of kick out of the '90s-ness as well. But beyond that, I think it's a kind of middle-of-the-road action serial that doesn't always follow through on its ideas as well as it could.

Anyway, for me, it's Mirage, but particularly Volume 1. And unlike most fans, it's really more for the issues after #21.

IDW would be second, as it's by far the most successful attempt at a serialized Turtles series in the franchise.

I've only read a volume 1 of the ultimate collection of Mirage and pick up every issue of IDW. So, it's a tie for me.

Tough for me to decide as I've enjoyed each incarnation thus far. I love what IDW is doing with the new series but I would want to wait until the series is further along before ranking it against the complete stuff. Not including IDW, I think my favorites were the main storyline stuff in Mirage volume 1 as well as volume 4.

So far, I've loved IDW quite a bit, but Volume 1 of Mirage is still my most favorite (IDW is a very close second at the moment, though).

I never read the Image run, I'll admit, and while I do like the Archie run to an extent, I still can't say I enjoy it that much, and I never read it as a kid, so I don't have any nostalgia for it, either. Also (and I'm sure I'll get a lot of heat for this), I never liked Cudley the Cowlick. Like, at all.

I never read the Dreamwave run (short as it was), nor have I read Volume 2 of Mirage. I've read Volume 4, however, and... I actually didn't care for it. For whatever reason, it didn't feel quite the same as Volume 1 did (which I still find had a perfect beginning and end).

Mirage, those early issue turtle designs are the best.
