View Full Version : So how did the Turtles get the human things in their lair?

In the first two episodes we see the Turtles have a TV, some arcade machines, human magazines, a table, a bunch of fighting equipment, computers, and such.

Given the Turtles never stepped above ground in 15 years, do you think Splinter brought it over from his human days?

Splinter totes went dumpster diving...

I wonder why he never bothered to bring down human food as well?
Whatever drove him to insist eating worms and algae when he could've brought down at least fruits and vegetables for 4 growing boys?
Spike even has his own lettuce.
Of course it could've been a discipline thing, him becoming a hermit and choosing to follow a meager diet.

TBF, Splinter eats the worms and algae despite the fact he must be missing human food for 15 years. Gotta give him props for that.

LOL, that made me LOL about Spike`s lettuce, but it`s so true!

are we gonna nitpick or can these be looked at as inconsistencies?

:teek: :o No such thing as inconsistencies. It's there, so it's canon, it's truth, and it must have a cause - whether it's been written or not.

We know the turtles haven't been to the surface, so it only makes sense that Splinter brought it down. Splinter knows all about human life, and he's the "father," so we can assume he actively controlled what the turtles learned about the surface. Those things are Splinter-approved.

But some things may have just been left in the subway station. But anything still there must be something Splinter chose not to remove.

It's not because the turtles have a television that hey have access to cable and multiple channels which would have made it all the less believable that they had no idea what pizza was or even how it was pronounced. They probably only have a select few channels approved by Splinter as well as a time-frame/schedule.
So far we know they have a news channel and a sci-fi/cartoon channel.

It could be that some of those things may have been abandoned down there from the previous tenants. We don't know if anyone else lived there before the Turtles did, but it wouldn't seem far fetched for some gang to maybe have had their hideout down there or something like that.

Cause as much as we want to believe he's a good father he's actually a huge prick. I wonder if he would have made Miwa eat worms and algae too were she alive. XD

I would think so, since all of the technology doesn't look newer than 1997 in the lair. Since Splinter/Hamato Yoshi had a period of time before he was mutated into a rat (this also applies to the OT with the TV, Hydra Tapestry, and kitchen), Yoshi presumably imported these products to the Lair. He probably had some money from Japan when he emigrated in which he used to purchase all of this stuff. With regards to his/the Turtles diet, there easily could have been fish, crumbs, and other animals abandoned underground that they could have prepared in their kitchen.

But surely Donnie must have other resources of information, given how he was geeking about a fairly recent upgrade/model of what I assume is a computer, which means he's somehow up to date on technology.
You'd think he at least out of all the turtles would have at least known what a pizza was even if he was just spouting factual information with no personal experience.

Also note that Raphael when eating the pizza revealed that he has never tasted anything better than worms and algae. If there were any other alternatives to the turtles diet it probably wasn't any better than worms and algae.

Ironically Splinter now treats Mikey like that. I'm never gonna let that go that he said that the only wrong decision would have been making Mikey the leader. Sure each incarnation gives the other the chance to be leader in some way just to show why Leo is the leader, but this was just plain cruel.

Its possible that Splinter simply kept the turtles on the diet outlined by the pet shop owner. Have we actually seen splinter eat worms and algae?

Ha, I think it's always funny how people think like that. Like this kind of topics!

Think you got your answer. Only the food part stays a little bit strange.. or maybe Master Splinter is just a sadistic rat ;)

this is the first thing you've said about Mikey that I agree with. That line sort of irked me. Why is Mikey always the resident putz in every incarnation?

Cause he's a party dude?

I hope because of the way you said that; that it doesn't mean I have a bad reputation on this forum. It makes me sound like I'm unlikable.

Mike was onlt the party dude in the 80 cartoon. In all other versions he is pushed as this jokster or baby brother stereotype. Every version tends to make him younger and younger. This version has freckles for Petes sake.

Also you are not "unlikable." Fight for your right to defend 4kids Mikey even if other think he's awful.

Well I'm not sure why he's the putz. I'm still gonna guess party dude though.

I don't know. I just feel like I'm not very well liked here. I could be wrong since it's just the air of threads that makes me feel that way but maybe my personality is a part of it.

I like that explanation.

Food for thought: If you had a pet dog who suddenly mutated, would you still feed him dog food out of habit & because it's all he's ever known? In Splinter's case, maybe it was just easier to keep feeding the Turtles what they were already used to, versus having to go out and scavenge for food. I don't think we've seen what Splinter typically eats yet.

Lets face it, all of this its because of poor writting, how can someone not know about other food like Pizza and have TV and internet? Youd think the turtles never questioned Splinter about all this stuff in over 15 years?.

All of this could have fitted a little better in the old series, but still they had a TV then.

The new series may have good jokes, lovable characters but it kinda sucks in the plot department, that's why I still think the 2k3 is better at the moment.

They didn't have internet till April showed them, I'm sure. They just had a TV.

Maybe with the limited diet the Turtles have and the fact Splinter is Japanese and maybe doesn't like American Cuisine that they just didn't know what pizza was?

I guess the real question is could you shelter kids enough that they wouldn't know about such a staple of most people's diets??

Without knowing the TV situation (what channels they have, how Splinter monitors it I guess we will never completely know.)

I do think it would have served the plot slightly better of they would have had the guys surprised by more human things other then just pizza. Like I was bemused by the fact they all had skateboards this past episode.

I am thoroughly enjoying this show either way, but it's something to think about in discussions!

They never had pizza because Splinter could never get it for them. How is a 6 foot tall rat supposed to pick up a pie of pizza?

But I do think this is all because the crew just really wanting the show the turtles discover pizza.

And they're still getting pizza, somehow...

TRENCH COATS?!

It's not so much that they never had pizza that is slightly baffling but the fact they have absolutely no clue what pizza is. I think had they just never tried it before that would have been a lot more understandable :tcool:

The funny thing is I am pretty certain every time we have seen them get it on screen so far they have just taken it from some poor baffled delivery man.

Pizza guys in NYC are going to hate Turtles! *laughs*

I assume April also gets it for them maybe??

I'd rather it be trench coats. Mikey would have a field day if he found a way to disguise himself (not that he let's it stop him, now).
