Just today IDW announced what they call "IDW Limited (http://idwlimited.com/)." This is a website specifically for Limited Editions, signed copies, etc. of IDW releases.

They are launching IDW Limited with 3 separate special TMNT limited edition sets of the TMNT Vol. 1 Change is Constant Deluxe Edition (http://idwlimited.com/books.html). Buying all 3 sets will set you back $725 !! :o

These types of things are relatively new to the TMNT comic book realm as Mirage never really did stuff like this. I've always sought to have a single copy of each printing of a TMNT comic, trade, or hardcover. However, just like the SDCC slipcase set, the book itself isn't limited other than the original print run (EDIT: this is a different book from the normal Deluxe Edition HC - at least in regards to cover variation - see this post (http://forums.thetechnodrome.com/showpost.php?p=1005733&postcount=9))...it's the stuff they are providing along with the book that makes this limited. These are definitely cool and if I had unlimited funds I'd buy all 3 sets. However, while this may fit a niche with some collectors, I've had to draw the line somewhere so I'm just buying one.

Thoughts? Any of you other TMNT comic book completists out there going to pay for these?

These seem kind of crazy price wise

I always kind of dislike items that are made limited simply to be limited

You scooped me Rich!

Hi guys, I'm Nate and I'm the community manager for IDW Limited. Was planning on making a thread about this and posting some pics & answering questions. That sound interesting to anyone?

Rich, there are a lot of components that make these books different, it's not just print run. I can definitely break down that down for you. Let me find a video actually. Give me a minute.

Eh? They look different to me...

You're right, Roseangelo...the cover does look different from what the normal Deluxe Edition was. I had forgotten about the cover of the Deluxe having a whiter background. Plus, if you read the description, it states that it's hand-numbered...hmmm. I missed that the first time around. That kind of changes things.

Rich is referring to the actual comic book hardcover itself, as he is strictly interested in collecting the different variations of the comics and not the stuff that comes with each package.

From what I can see, each set includes the same hardcover book with a black cover (making it different from the regular edition, which has a white cover).

Sorry to steal your thunder on this. Didn't mean to. :)

My main question is whether the three editions of these books themselves are different from one another (other than, of course, the numbering and what you get with them). In other words, what does the legal indicia state on the inside of these books? Are these 3 all the same or does it state "red label" or "black label" on the inside?

Thanks!

Rich;

All the IDW Limited editions have the same enhancements: variant cover, vellum overlay of the title page, new endpages. Interior pages for all three lines are the same.

Each edition has a foil stamp denoting red/black/blue and a satin bookmark ribbon of the same color.

Here's a specs video for the blue book:

Thank you sir! This is valuable information. This definitely changes things (at least for me).

Let's see if I have this right. This is a Limited Edition version of the Deluxe Edition Hardcover book that is different than the previous Deluxe Edition. This Limited Edition has a print run of 210 that is split into 3 tiers: Red (175), Black (25), and Blue (10). The different tiers determine the items that are included with the book (and the numbering, signature / sketches).

I'm with you on hating to pay the high markup later...it's either "pay a lot now" or "pay a TON later." Plus, those SDCC Ultimates (the books themselves) were not any different than the B&W Ltd. Ed. Ultimates on IDWs site.

Actually, it is virtually IMPOSSIBLE to be a true Turtle completionist. With the system IDW is proposing, this seems to be the Turtlemania for this series, though this is a much more questionable investment. I still try to diversify my spending, from vintage VOGUE magazines to game show tickets to an Action Comics #1 reprint. It seems like the past few years is sadly separating the wealthy fans from the more casual, down-to-earth fans and the fun of simply enjoying the new product is being taken out of in favor of snobbish consumerism. Please remember we're only human and that money can't buy love like the Beatles once sang. Buy this for LOVE and PASSION, not for cockiness and smart aleckness.

What exactly is a signature plate? I see the picture of it in the listing details, but I was wondering if it's made of thicker paper or some other material?

Also, are there different illustrations for the signature plates for each edition (ie - red, black, blue) or are there different illustrations for each set sold?

IamtheNorm

I ordered one of each of these earlier for my collection, it is difficult to keep up with everything that is coming out. However once I get my hands on a 1:50 number 1 then I should have just about everything the IDW has put out for the TMNT so far...and that does include three different versions of the Ultimate Collection 1,2, and 3.

The signature plate is slightly thicker, yes. 250-gsm.

Great question; YES. The signature plate is different for each line: red/black/blue, so that is one more difference to the interior of the book.

If you look at the videos on the product page, you can see the different signature plates when they open up the books.

and that does include three different versions of the Ultimate Collection 1,2, and 3.

Three different versions is actually not true...although each collector looks at things differently and in their own way (which is cool). This is a gray area for sure.

Officially, there are only two versions of the Ultimate Collection: the Regular and the B&W Limited for each volume. The SDCC set uses the same B&W Limited books and they aren't different versions of the books themselves. They were just packaged in a slipcase all together.

This Deluxe Limited Edition of the Change Is Constant HC is actually a different book (printing) than the original and contains a couple new vellum pages and the cover is different.

So...who thinks they are going to bleed us dry by putting these versions out for every trade?

I wouldn't say I have buyers remorse, more like sticker shock. Hard to drop that kind of cash when I am taking my wife to Paris this year for our 10th anniversary....I will recover, but it seems like bad timing.

That depends...if you count the foil stamp and ribbon as "different" then I guess it is...however, I don't (at least not enough to shell out $725 for them all).

I for sure plan on opening one of each. I do not own any original art so I am really excited to get these and frame them up. I was debating ordering a Jim Lawson commission, but this will keep me happy for now. As for the book itself, I will for sure admire it and page through it, but will stick to the actual comics for reading the stories in order to better preserve the volumes. Although, thanks to the $.99 sale last weekend on the first 10 IDW digital TMNT, I won't even have to pull my comics out of the bags to re-read the stories now. :)

I mainly got the Blue because of the OA. I like the group shots, and that was right up my alley. The red sketches look pretty amazing though, and from what I can tell the Black had the best signature plate. I really like the Raph in the top left, and the Mikey in the top right of the sketches the representative posted.

I'm in for one red and one black label edition. I love the original art and I'm a sucker for the different slipcase/traycase and signature plate artwork. It's a bit much to drop $400 on these two after shipping, but I have lots to sell on ebay soon so the funds will be there. Hopefully I get Raph in one of my two sets :tsmile:

I impulsively purchased the red and the black, because of the OA. I might consider selling the physical books, or at least the black one, as I could really care less about it/them....depends on what I could get for them. I will hopefully frame the OA

To me I just paid $400 for 2 Duncan commissions, one with full color, and ill get some fancy books as a bonus.

1) Signature plates are attached to the book.

Can you please confirm which statement is accurate regarding the signature plate? The interview with Eastman indicates the signature plate will be a separate piece not attached to the book. Thanks in advance.

a limited edition signature plate that will be housed in a separate artist's portfolio accompanying each book

Also, it looks like all 25 black label sets have sold out.

No problem, I was just curious. I would prefer something like that be a separate piece so I could frame it or display it on it's own. I understand that most sketch plates/signature plates are intended to be attached to the book though.

Congratulations by the way in selling out of the blue and black labels in one day. That seems pretty quick for such high dollar items.

To be fair, "worth" is entirely subjective. All collectibles are just paper, or plastic, or whatever. None of it is really worth anything.

I'm pretty sure its worth as much as someone is willing to pay. Its not just for a book. Original art is included as well. Call it whatever you want, but at least they are making something for the fans. Judging by the quick sellouts, it seems to be a hit.

And yes, this is just "collector's bait" and sure, these books "are not worth that price" since if you are not a collector you'll be unlikely to buy all them and, like someone already said here, the meaning of "worth" sometimes is all about how much one is willing to pay. And this is a fact: all those variant covers have given us the chance to see a lot of new TMNT artworks, including the ones by our beloved Kevin Eastman.
As long as we are not forced to buy what we are not interested in we can just say Thank you to IDW to releasing all this stuff!

I'm not sure when I said it hurt me. I just think that it is collector bait, and I felt like I might be the only who felt that way. I was glad to see it wasn't just me. Fact is I am a firm believer that the comic boom that happened a few years ago won't ever be repeated. Since the days when a copy of Amazing Fantasy 15 first sold for thousand and thousands of dollars comics have become something that people collect with the hope that they will be in possession of the next Amazing Fantasy #15 come 2047. Unfortunately this has people buying a lot more comics and thus comics are now printed in far greater quantities. Which means that they have to come up with a way to still make it enticing to collector's to go out and buy comic books that is where rare variant covers come into play. Unfortunately that means that collectors are now shaping the industry and they have to play these little games in order to still entice them to buy.

I'll cite your argument that it has allowed a lot of great artwork to come to light. What good is great artwork if you have to be one of a chosen few to actually see it. Wouldn't it be better if the only cover to each turtle book was the Kevin Eastman print. Then anyone who bought it casual or collector would be exposed to it. Also in an effort to actually make money on these variant covers Comic Shops end up charging more for them upfront which seems odd considering the fact that I am holding it in my hands new on day one and having to pay more than the cover price.

I'm sorry that I don't necessarily agree with this practice, but I'm not upset about it, I don't demonize those that are willing and able to spend the money in order to own these treasure. However, where I do take offense is that I always believed that comic books were meant to be read and more and more I see people just buying them to buy them and not read them. When there are people who are buying two copies of these sets one not to read, that upsets me, because that is one less that will be sold to someone who might have actually been buying it not just to have it but to read it. At that point I'd prefer they just sell the original artwork without the book that I can justify the price on because that is something truly unique and not just a reprinted book with a different cover and a foil star.

That raph sketch looks familiar. :D:D not so unique Duncan, you sly fox you. They look great though.

As for the collector's bait comment. While I'm tempted to get a copy... I don't feel it has enough additional material... not enough incentive for me to pick it up. I personally think that if the blue label was so pricey... the cover shouldve been unique from the other two. Not only would it attract more collectors.... it'll be worth every penny if there were only ten blue label books ever printed with this unique cover. Add a little rarity and prestige. Would've been cool and I would've picked one up. If the only thing that sets these books apart is the bookmark and the sketch that came with it... then I don't think it's worth it. Plus.. not really a fan of reused covers

Still cool though.

@FoxZerro
I can see what you are talking about and I agree. A collector-based system totally sucks, this shouldn't just happen. Comics should be more about good stories and drawings than just collectible objects, I'm 100% with you on this. But you know what, we live in this weird world and this is just a part of it. I try to be positive and take the good part of the deal while I ignore the rest.

Wouldn't it be better if the only cover to each turtle book was the Kevin Eastman print.
I would prefer it to be the more common one so I would be able to easily find one sometimes but at least I can see Eastman's artwork on my screen. I can own one cover only (well, actually I COULD buy all the variant covers but I'm not interested in buying the same issue more than once just because of the different cover) but I can appreciate all of them and if I really like a cover that I wasn't able to find I can get it printed by a local shop, why not?
However, there's something that I'm not liking about IDW's variant covers: there are too many of them! I think this could somehow harm the "identity" of the single issue. Usually the variants are made for special issues on special occasions, having them for ALL the issues could bring to some kind of identity crisis.. This is my only complaint, my only.. worry.
For all the rest I'm with you FoxZerro, you are not alone. I'm just trying to remain positive and take only the good part.

We didn't limit black or blue at launch, but probably will going forward.

Thankfully, no one ordered more than 2 this round, and I think 2 is fair. But we've got some stuff in the pipeline that's probably going to be limited to one per person. There's a FIVE copy (non-tmnt)blue label coming out soon!

I'd hate to have one person snap up every copy in an attempt to control the market.

The red's are so awesome. Dan did a huge number of poses for each turtle too, so it's not just one sketch a bunch of times. I'll probably post a few more angles when I get back into the office Monday. The Mikey cityscape is one of my favorites. I posted it on facebook, if not on here.

WOW...I am so happy I stopped collecting tmnt comics when the IDW run started. I'd be LOSING MY MIND, since as a completionist, I'd have to have one of each of these (no matter the "realities" if they are "really" different from each other). Fortunately, I'm content with digital material regarding this run and can put my time and resources into original art. Because between this and all those variant covers for the regular run...sheesh.

It was honestly hard enough to get all versions from the original run (printings, appearances, etc.) Getting a Gold Turtlemania, one of a ten print run, took a collecting lifetime to achieve and finally completed my run. But now print runs of 10 seem like they might be the norm. I have no idea how you all can stomach this. I mean, its one thing to chase after an error cover printing or something non-intentional, maybe a special collected book every now and again. But what's been going here since the inception...but I guess this is what they call fan/collector service nowadays. Maybe I'm just an old fogey...!

All of that said, those of you who are taking on this herculean task, I salute you! We collectors come in a million shapes and sizes, with a million difference focuses, and the way I see it, if you are plowing your cash into Reds, Blacks, & Blues, then hopefully that means a little less cash out there for those things I do enjoy purchasing. :)

If I had purchased one and got a non-turtle, I think at first I would disappointed, but it wouldn't take long for me to realize how rare and special my piece is. & then I'd cherish it more than anything! If you bump into Dan at a con, he might do a turtle sketch for you, but I doubt he'd do a secondary character. So those are very unique works that I'm sure will please their owners.

Natecm,

I know it might be too early to tell just yet, but obviously these things have been very well received by the fandom, and I would guess they even exceed IDW's expectations with the Blue & Black Labels selling out so fast. Can we count on every collected edition for the foreseeable future being offered in these 3 formats? It'd be great to continue to release each set like this, I'd love to have a whole shelf of TMNT hardcovers packed with extras between the Red Labels and Ultimate Editions. And it'd be great to collect the great original art from every artist who tackles the Turtles in this series. I would love an edition that came with an Eastman sketch, and looking way ahead, a Bates sketch. I know it is probably too early to confirm yes for all arcs, but is it at probable that we'll be seeing a fair chunk of the TMNT Ongoing series being collected & released in this format down the road? And if so any idea on timeline? 1 every 6 months? 1 every quarter?

Response has definitely been positive and that's great. Continuing momentum and growth is important.

We didn't do Volume 1 without hoping to continue the series. Ideally every quarter sounds about right. But it's probably going to take us time to get up to that speed so it could be six months for a while.

Quick Review:

The box it was shipped in was well protected as you would expect from the costs associated with it. I went straight for the book inside for the signature plate. The book is awesome and is embossed in several locations. Overall happy with the book.

The main reason I bought a Blue label though...the Duncan art. I was VERY pleased to get a representation of the #1 covers spread across the page. 1 tiny nit pick here is that the case that holds the art is very tight around the paper. If you don't close it properly it could bend the left edge of the art. Rest of the box was pretty good as well, but the art makes it worth it for me.

Thanks Dan and everyone else involved!

Was re-reading some of this thread and saw this post. Great post and great insights...not sure how I missed it the first time.

Like you, I've been a TMNT completist (completionist) for years. While I haven't stopped with the new IDW stuff, as of this Limited Edition book I've come to the realization that it's just no longer financially responsible or wise for me personally to continue seeking every TMNT variant with all that IDW is putting out. So, for this book I decided to just purchase a Red edition.

Now, add to this that IDW plans to do this "Red, Black, Blue" edition for more and then today's release of two $100/each Jetpack TMNT Annual variants...it's truly now impossible for me to keep up financially. So, I'll keep collecting what I can but it's a sad day to realize you just can't continue as desired with a lifelong hobby. :(

Yep, that's really what irks me most about this: this is targeted at collectors (since most "casual" fans wouldn't buy a book that they already have a collected version of, esp. at these prices). Is it really fan-service to put out something that is virtually identical to what is already out there (minus some vellum, foil, etc.) at such a high price? And 3 versions? And with the hope to potentially release these $700 triple sets quarterly?! Yes, I get that there is some Duncan art in there, at a price that would be probably be lower than if you commisioned him directly. That said, you have NO input in what kind of art you'd be getting (in this package) so I think that washes out price differences.

IMO, its a complete money grab. Which is fine since they are a business and the point is to grab as much money as possible. And nobody is forced to buy. I'm just speaking as a lowly completionist, and what IDW has been doing from the getgo is an absolute nightmare with all these variants, jetpacks, etc.(isn't there something like 10 different covers for issue #1 alone?) And since I feel that sets like these are probably targeted at completionists, and since in this thread alone a number of people who are a bit miffed are also completeionists, I think its a valid point to bring up.

But if everybody keeps buying everything they put out, what incentive is there on their part to change?

18 covers (http://www.tmnt-ninjaturtles.com/blog/2011/07/tmnt-1-idw-variant-covers/)...counting all the specials and ashcan editions. :ohwell:

But if everybody keeps buying everything they put out, what incentive is there on their part to change?

Exactly Danny. Which is why I just can't justify keeping up with everything IDW puts out. I was really upset when IDW released Vol. 1-3 of the Ultimate Collections for pickup ONLY at SDCC this year (no shipping). When something like that then turns up on eBay all over the place for $500+...that's just maddening.

So, I'll do my best to keep up with the comic book part but many of these limited-special-ultra-mega-rare collected editions are just now out of my collecting scope. I know this type of stuff is just the progression of where the comic book business is headed and it's about money (which I can't blame them for...that's why they're in the business). So, instead of getting upset I just have to adapt how and what I collect now. I still enjoy collecting and always will. Everyone's collection is unique and that's what makes it so great to interface with all of you...seeing what everyone collects and has is really fun.

What are these $100 variants you speak of... which covers are they/where can I see them?

I have the covers here (http://www.tmnt-ninjaturtles.com/blog/2012/07/tmnt-annual-2012-idw/) on my site. Go to ebay here (http://www.ebay.com/sch/m.html?_odkw=&_ipg=50&_osacat=0&_armrs=1&_ssn=cesradjr&_trksid=p2046732.m570.l1313&_nkw=ninja+turtle&_sacat=0&_from=R40) to see the prices.

Same here...I am struggling to find something.

I don't have one of these, so I don't know exactly what size they are. But if it doesn't fit a standard-sized frame, I'd just go to a frame shop and get a mat custom cut for it, which then could fit in a standard frame.

Or, center it in a clip frame, like this (http://www.aaronbrothers.com/products/euro-clip).

One of my favorite framing-on-the-cheap methods is a mat inside a clip frame. Or, find a nice piece of paper from the scrapbooking section and put that behind the art.

They were the best!!!

After spending a little time searching tonight, this seems to be a good place for custom matting. http://www.framesbymail.com/
It is a little more expensive that documounts, but looks to be decent compared to framing stores. I always recommend you go with the conservation grade when it comes to matting so it does not harm the art in any way since it will be pressed up against it for years and years.

Do we really need more of these? Is this just the ultimate collections for the hard cover with limited quantities and original art? I think you are going to see real fast that people are going to be unwilling to pay so much if you keep putting these out all the time, especially since they are rehashing of products that have already been produced. To be fair though, original art from Kevin might make it worth it for some.

Will these sell at the same price as the others, or will there be a higher premium for Kevin's art?

Sweet...thanks for the info. I think it's better to keep it all in this thread...it's IDW Limited.

As an aside, I'm curious about what other TMNT comic completists are doing. These IDW Limited books are awesome (just got my Red Label Change Is Constant yesterday). The TMNT enthusiast in me loves that we're seeing so many super-creative and very well-made items but the collector in me is mourning the loss of the ability to collect everything. Collectibles of this magnitude (both in frequency and cost) are very new to us TMNT comic completists. We rarely had to deal with Mirage, Archie, or Image providing such limited and expensive collectibles and, when they did, it was very infrequent. Assuming this type of IDW Limited line continues with the TMNT series, I'm interested to see how other collectors are going to handle this. I've personally had to change my scope and just buy the Red Label of these IDW Limited editions to ensure I can continue collecting the actual TMNT comic books. Dropping $750-$1,000 every few months to get all 3 versions of the TMNT IDW Limited books is just not feasible for me. Are you other collectors going to continue buying all 3 (Red, Black, & Blue) versions of these IDW Limited books?

If only it was that cheap! The whole set is $2,025 :teek: But that includes 5 "certified" hand drawn full color original art prints from Kevin Eastman himself. I see it as a steal when you look at it that way and the value original Eastman art of TMNT holds.

I think IDW is beginning to think that we turtle fans might be made out of money. I'm not sure but how did they think that making 325 of the red label would make sense? Aren't there still red labels of the last idw limited that are still left, and those seem like a better deal to me in that at least you get some art. If i'm remembering correctly there was also fewer of those.

I had passed the IDW Limited version of Change is Constant. and i do not feel much of a regret. But to be honest since this is classic material , even tho i own the normal edition HCs, i really would one of these.
If i was a TMNT - only collector , i would buy for sure. But while there are some other cash to be saved for other comics and figure/statues i guess i will be passing those as well.
also if it comes to a point that, IDW Limited starts to publish nearly every collection they publish also in those fancy formats, i know i will be unhappy at the end, since i am a completist and tryiing to buy every one of them is impossible for me.

The same guy (I think - different user ID) messaged me again asking if I wanted to buy a "blue edition." :ohwell:

Also, maybe I was seeing things this AM, but did anyone else see that the Blue and Black labels both were priced at $350 initially? Now, the Blue price shows $495. Plus, the Red Label was $350 when I initially added it to my cart this morning.

At the moment, I see the collection of all label colors as the full set. The covers are variant, even if it is just the label denotation, as is the content inside. My job is in document control and I would view each label type to have their own unique part number since they would be manufactured, packed, and inventoried differently. Therefore to truly be a completist on these you would need one of each. In fact, there are technically 4 versions of the Black label. Since the Black label for "Change is Constant" was a print at random, it only had one version. But the "Ultimate Collections" will be sorted by the 4 print types and are being sold as such. So to collect all of these new offerings you would need to buy 6 books.

My original intent with these limited books was to buy two of each: one to open and enjoy and one to keep sealed and collect. However, both market demand and my pocket book no longer allow for this to be possible. So for this most recent offering I opted for all 6- one each type, including all versions of the Black label. It wasn't my original intent to buy 4 blacks but I knew if I didn't I would regret it! That being said, if these offerings continue to be as frequent and costly as they are currently, I am going to have to scale back. But for now I am definitely enjoying IDW Limited!

With your method of collecting you should have bought all 10 blues, all 25 Blacks and all 125 reds the last go round... all the art was different in each one. If you are collecting every little difference you will go broke pretty quick. You can argue that you are a completionist more than everyone else, but your logic contradicts that by your own admission :tlol:

No- as I said in my post, with the last round the art was all packed at random and there was essentially only one offering of each book type on the website. This second round separates out the books by print types and this is reflected on the order page. I'm not trying to "argue," but my point is that for this round, IDW Limited if offering 6 options on the page just as they offered 3 options with the last round. I view that as 6 different versions so to have a complete set a collector would want one of each. People are going to have differing opinions on this matter and there is nothing wrong with that. But Rich asked for advice and opinions from fellow collectors and I was just giving him mine.

Thank you guys for weighing in on this. Appreciate your opinions as fellow collectors. There's for sure no right or wrong method of "what" you collect...in the end it's your collection and you get to decide what's in it, right? :D

In regards to "completist" or "completionist" and what that's about, I also think this is subject to one's opinions. Personally, for 25 years, I've labeled myself a "completist" and I defined this as collecting at least one or each variant of the TMNT comics and books themselves. That might be cover, interior, or error but the book itself being different or unique is what I was after. I needed to wait until I received my Red Label Change Is Constant though to really comment on whether the Red, Black, and Blue label books themselves are different. Of course, by now you all know that they are. They each have a different colored exterior label (red, black, or blue) but the interior bound page with the raised stamp also is unique to the Red, Black, or Blue books themselves.

So, to really stay true to how I've always collected as a "completist" would mean I'd need one each of the Red, Black, and Blue labels. The art itself is not relevant to my decision if it isn't really joined to the book itself.

However, this now gets REALLY involved with these Vol. 1 Ltd. Edition BLACK Labels. Since numbering comes into play with defining what a variant or unique edition is, the key here is this. Each of the books has a "Mounted signature page signed by TMNT co-creator Kevin Eastman, hand-crimped and numbered to TEN." Since this page is part of the book itself this means each of the 4 Black Labels of Vol. 1 Ltd. Ed. are variants (at least by how I would define this). That numbering within the books themselves is what I see as the key to defining it as a variant. They are each limited to ten and, therefore, I'd need 1 each of those 10 variant editions to have a complete set. For Vol. 1 Ltd. Ed. there are 6 variants (1 Red, 4 Black, 1 Blue). For Change Is Constant there are 3 variants (Red, Black, Blue).

So, since I've only decided to collect the Red Labels from IDW Limited I can't still call myself a TMNT "completist" by my own definition of what that is. However, I've come to terms with this and am OK with it. Largely because I don't want my collecting hobby (which I very much enjoy) to negatively impact my family or my finances. Collecting should be fun but, honestly, if I bought all of these it would become painful financially and then it would no longer be enjoyable. But don't get me wrong, if I could afford it I'd snap up one of every single edition of these.

In the end, I think it's so cool that the TMNT are back in a big way. These books are just evidence of that. Some of you likely remember the "dry" TMNT years where there was just NOTHING...I would have given anything to have stuff like this around during that time.

I'm so glad I'm not a completionist. It makes my head hurt just reading what you guys think about these sets :teek:

Yes, it can get mind-numbing as a collector. And this post likely didn't help that any. Sorry in advance. :)

What also really made a difference for me in this decision is that it was Kevin's work this time around. Don't get me wrong, I love Kevin and his work...but I own a ton of his art already.

As such, it was really difficult for me to justify Buying all these different art incentives, when I have so many fantastic (not to mention vintage) Kevin pieces on my walls.

The last wave was a little different because, aside from a couple pages, I don't own any Dan art.

Edit:
Additionally, from an art collecting standpoint, the blacks are pretty expensive. Now mind you, this is only the case if you arent in it for the book as well. If you are only after the art (like many people seemed to be for the Dan Duncan books last time around), Vintage 1 figure character art by kevin can be had in the price range of these black editions. As an example, I have a full color 1985 Eastman Raph piece that I paid $400 for within the last year.

I've already had my say about what I think about these items and a collector driven environment, so I won't recap that.

What I will say is I wish that they would wait until after they've printed all of the Ultimate Collections before they started doing things like this. I keep receiving the e-mails that the release date on Ultimate Collection Four is being pushed back and I now see that work on an Ultimate Edition rerelease of Volume One is one of the reasons why... It would be nice if they finished rereleasing the series before they started putting out this collector bait.

Stop doing these expensive rich-collector-only limited-for-the-sake-of-it books. We are comicbooks readers, not art collectors. If I want my books signed I take them to convenctions and have them signed, if I want some original art I ask the artist for a commission. We don't need items that are limited on purpose, just for the sake of it. Put your effort in doing good affordable books for all: Ultimate collections were good enough, we don't need Ultimate Deluxe collections.
I wonder what they would do if they ever manage to have Laird doing some sketch and signs. $2000 Super Extreme Ultimate Deluxe editions?

Not sure I agree with this. I think it's kind of lame to say something is bad just because you aren't interested in it or because it's outside your budgetary scope.

You simply can't use the royal "we" in this case. Because many of us ARE art collectors. Many of us ARE interested in this level of collectible. You can't tell them they shouldn't do something simply because you, a single consumer, don't want it. The imprint has already proven itself in sales. There is a big enough market interested in this level of collectible to sustain it. So more power to them.

I also don't think that doing these books are taking many resources from the other books. That is why IDW Limited is it's own imprint with its own schedule, and it's own resources. Nate can probably speak more to this.

I only said that because these books are showcasing original art from Kevin Eastman and Bobby has been saying on the IDW boards for sometime that he is waiting for Annotations and the Cover from him. Regardless of a separate inprint, Kevin Eastman is one man, and if there is more money to be made on these Ultimate Deluxe editions, which mathematically there is since 420 > 50, 350 > 50, and 125 > 50. One could easily imagine that these books would take precedence.

I agree, I understand that some people out there are in fact Art Collector's I myself have some pretty cool and unique prints from some of my favorite artists. Still I preferred when getting a signed comic book meant going to a signing or convention... not just buying it off the internet.

But even then, why would any of that be cause for them to stop being produced? If you don't want them...don't buy them. Plenty of people want them, and buy them. Stopping production would not have any positive impact on the people who don't like them...but it would have a negative impact on the people who DO want them. So saying they shouldn't be made just because you don't buy them is a pretty selfish play.

There's nothing stopping you from buying the regular edition and takin it to a convention to get signed. It's not like Kevin won't sign those simply because the Limited books exist.

I'm not an art collector nor a completitionist, but I enjoy owning some original art from artists I admire and every now and then I do buy variants and such. The issues included in this volume are massively important for me, and an edition like this is something I've been wanting for many years. I honestly don't see how this hurts the other, more affordable editions of the same material. Granted this books are not for everyone, but it's not like the stories in it are restricted to only the Deluxe version.

Personally, I'm aware that I could get Eastman's art for less than that, but I'm also buying an extremely nice book, and yes, with a very limited run (wich plays a big role in the price). I would still buy it despite the number of copies printed, but I understand that the less there are, the more it costs. I remember when we paid $10 for the last issues of Mirage Vol.4 not that long ago.

Of course we don't "need" this collections, but there are people willing to buy them, and at the end of the day, publishing companies just want to make money. I think the effort put in this things is worth the money, so that's why I'm buying it, but that's just an opinion and everyone's gonna have their own.

The point that Kevin Eastman is only one man, I get. But either way, IDW is going to keep thinking up ways to find cool things for him to do. I'm bummed that the cover isn't ready yet, but I don't think it would necessarily be done sooner if these didn't exist. He'd probably just be working on something else.

The math part is where you lose me. There is supply AND demand. You can make a $350 book, but if you only make 10, you can't compare that to 1,000 $50 books sold. Sure, there is some monetary incentive from these publishers to put out these collectible books, but it's a little nutty to say these take precedence over their main reprint books which have way higher runs. In the end, as long as they don't replace the more affordable books for everyone, there's nothing being taken away, only added.

Oh man, if I'd known about these in time I would have been all over a Blue label.

Black label (Leo) is tempting, but since I'd be getting it for the art not the book I'm not sure I can justify the price (495 for the group shot in color is a bargain, 350 for 1 character's not as easy to justify to my bank balance, or my wife, this close to Christmas).

which mathematically there is since 420 > 50, 350 > 50, and 125 > 50.

Yeah, this is just terrible math.
The print run for the unlimited versions of a UC hardcover are unknown to me, but for the sake of argument, lets just say it's double the limited "convention" version print run (which is 500).

So lets use the $50 price point you proposed as a baseline for the unlimited (it would actually be a little less on their end since they don't sell them direct at that price...but let's not over-complicate this).

$50 x 1000 = $50,000 Retail for the Unlimited Print run

And you know what? For kicks, lets add in the "convention" print run of the same book, since all the extra work for those is production and manufacturing work. No extra work for the artist.

So another $50 x 500 = $25,000 retail

So far we have roughly $75,000 in retail for the Non-artist involved copies.

Now. Lets do some quick math for the IDW Limited versions. We aren't even going to count the added production costs of the books that are hand crafted.

Blue Label $500 x 10 = $5,000
Black Label $350 x 40 = $14,000
Red Label $325 x 125 = $40,625

So Retail for Limited is $59,625. About $15,000 LESS in retail than the regular books.

Now, there is going to be a variance due to the fact that the Unlimited books get a percentage taken from Diamond for them that the Limited books don't since they are sold Direct. But there is also a cost variance going the other way since the Limited's are much more expensive to produce and they have to pay a page rate to the artist for the extra art.

My point is that, the Limited imprint doesn't exist for IDW to make hand-over-fist money from the collector base, and they aren't fleecing people who buy them. It exists because they want to provide the service for the collectors. IDW Limited is a credibility engine for IDW, not a money maker.

Food for thought.

I agree with your thinking that it is more cost beneficial for idw to make the normal hardcovers, but saying that all these books sell for 50 isn't very accurate. I bet a ton of people that get these get them from amazon where they are about 28 dollars. Regardless of this, there are so many factors that change, (could the print run be higher? how much extra work does it really take to make these hand printed editions? How much are they paying Kevin for all that extra drawing he has to do?) That I do think the normal hardcovers are a bigger money maker for them.

BUT, I'm sure Idw knows there will be people like us that will double dip and buy both

Yeah i was going off the MSRP since thats what the other guy was going off of. But even so, If EVERY copy sold for $28, thats 28,000 + $25,000 (every copy of the convention versions DO sell for $50 since they are directly sold). So the lowball is $53,000. Again, that would be assuming every person that bought the book did so through Amazon.
