It started to gain popularity because the video was hilarious. Also, because it sounds like Open Condom Style. Then, it started getting so many hits that the mainstream media started to take notice. They thought it had a lot of hits because people liked it. Now it is just funny to see how popular it is in places like iTunes and the mainstream based on how it came to NA. I still laugh.

Honestly, I think a lot of it is in Korean as I can't understand the words myself. But I still think it's catchy and a good song to dance to. Hey, if it gets people to exercise more, that's a good thing, right?

To anyone who's boggled by the popularity of "Gangnam Style," just remember where and among whom it became popular. Nobody claims Psy is the next Mozart, and chart-wise the song wasn't even that big of a hit in the US. Where it was a hit was YouTube, and the bar for YT-based pop music is...low, to say the least. "Crank Dat," by Soulja Boy, was a dance-based rap "song" that didn't even have a danceable beat, and "Friday" proves we've taken the "So Bad It's Good" thing way too far; I could understand laughing at it, but buying it was pathetic. That the video whose view record "Gangnam Style" broke was "Baby" by Justin Bieber should tell you everything else you need to know.

By contrast, "Gangnam Style" is a very primitive song, but it does have a danceable beat, a sense of humor, and an associated dance that is actually fun and challenging to do. I hated it at first, and honestly, I don't even think the video is all that funny, but after the song just wouldn't leave my head, and I tried actually dancing along with it, it grew on me. That TMNT video actually butchers the song a bit, making it even more repetitive by looping it instead of going to the chorus. I am very pleased to see Vanilla Ice coming back to the license, though, and it makes me hope one day, I'll get to see a life performance of the original Ninja Rap.
