View Full Version : Splinter's human origin is now used in more incarnations than his rat origin

Anyone notice this?
Splinter being Hamato Yoshi:
- Original cartoon
- Archie TMNT comics
- Nick TMNT cartoon
- IDW comics
Splinter being the pet rat of Yoshi:
Mirage comics
Movie universe
4kids cartoon
The incarnations where he's Hamato Yoshi now outnumber his original Mirage origin. How do you feel?

As a fan of any incarnation where Hamato Yoshi becomes Splinter I find this very interesting.

i like both versions but i have to feel that rat first splinter is way more unbelievable. you could say that is part of the charm, and i would not disagree, but a part of me feels like a rat learning martial arts from its cage BEFORE even
being mutated seems over the top.
it's also underwhelming when shredder finds out who splinter really is! "it's... you! the pet rat of my mortal enemy! NOW YOU PAY!" -- i mean come on :P :P it just does not have the same effect!
human first splinter has potential for much greater drama.
my favorite origin is still the OT origin because splinter is a former ninja now homeless in NYC who rasies the TMNT from *baby turtles* -- see, this is the part that bothers me more than splinter's origin, the fact that in some versions of TMNT the turtles mutate straight into teenagers (even in the OT they do this!) i have problems with this for a lot of reasons :/
i guess my favorite origin would be a combination of both OT and the first movie. I think splinter should be human first, but the turtles should mutate into babies... or at least children -- and then splinter has plenty of years to train them.
if they mutate straight into 15yos how does that give splinter and the 4 turtles time to bond and train? :/ (yes, I know the IDW series gets around this... though that is another topic!)

I prefer the rat origin myself. It just seems to work better for me.
Though I would suggest that the IDW version is a mixture of both. Because he was human but reincarnated and mutated from rat form.

yes the IDW origin merges a lot of the great ideas. it is probably the best origin if you like the idea of reincarnation. personally I find it too great a departure from the established canon.

The incarnations where he's Hamato Yoshi now outnumber his original Mirage origin.
Technically, that's not true.
Splinter is a mutated rat in:
- Mirage comics;
- Image comics;
- The first three movies;
- The Next Mutation series;
- 4kids series;
- Dreamwave comics;
- TMNT movie;
- (arguably) IDW comics.
Even if you respectively count Mirage/Image, the four movies, and 4kids/Dreamwave as the same continuities (ignoring some inconsistencies), they still aren't outnumbered. :P
How do you feel?
I do agree that a human mutated into a rat makes more sense than a mutated rat as a ninja master. But I still prefer the Splinter as a rat approach, for various reasons.
Firstly, I think it makes the family bond more interesting and realistic. Splinter and the Turtles are already different species, but at least they are all mutated animals and so understand each other better than the humans from the outside world.
Also, an animal who raises and teaches the human ways to other animals is more original and less condescending (from an animal point of view).
Moreover, I don't think Splinter is very realistic as a human. I think that a human mutated into an animal should want to re-establish connections with his fellow humans. Instead, the continuities where Splinter is a human are the same ones where Splinter is less active and more secluded. The Turtles seem to be the only ones with the need to make human friends and to blend into the human world.
my favorite origin is still the OT origin because splinter is a former ninja now homeless in NYC who rasies the TMNT from *baby turtles* -- see, this is the part that bothers me more than splinter's origin, the fact that in some versions of TMNT the turtles mutate straight into teenagers! i have problems with this for a lot of reasons :/
Er, correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure that in the OT the Turtles mutate directly into teenagers.
I even remember Raphael telling April that they spent half their lives in a glass ball in the first episode.

I even remember Raphael telling April that they spent half their lives in a glass ball in the first episode.
My wording was obtuse above. But i did reference that fact.
still he *had* them from babies, or nearly so. they couldn't have been that old when they left the pet shop. they lived with splinter for some time before the mutation.
I still prefer the TMNT live-action turtles origin :D The 4kids show was also highly influenced by that version of the origin

Agreeing with Loudo, you're forgetting Next Mutation, and it's kind of loaded to put IDW squarely in either category.
Yes, he's Hamato Yoshi (if you believe his reincarnation story), but it avoids most of the pitfalls of other Yoshi-is-Splinter origins by also making him a normal, mutated rat who only starts to remember its former life when experimented upon. What are those pitfalls? Mostly the idea that a human turned into a rat-man and forced into the sewers would be at all okay with those developments.
Overall, I don't really care which origin is used, as long as it's used well. Historically, I feel the rat origin has been more successful. You have to get over the initial silliness of Splinter being a hyper-intelligent rodent, but that's a fair trade for the constant silliness of a once-human Splinter calmly accepting his lot in life.
The problem with the human origin is that it makes Splinter's mutation a burden, rather than the blessing it is in the rat origin. If you're not prepared to have your story deal heavily with the consequences of that, it's not a road you should go down in the first place.
(Nick seems to be handling it a little better though. Making Yoshi a man who had recently lost his wife and daughter, and who regrets his previous actions, makes his zen-like approach to his new life a lot more believable.)

Then we might as well count OT/Archie as the same continuities as well, reducing the human origin to three. Even if IDW Splinter is clearly a human origin, it would still be tied at three with regards to blending the other continuities that Loudo pointed out, which would make it a draw.
Since I experienced the OT Splinter first, I'm always partial to that origin, and now that both Nick and IDW both pretty much agree on a human mutation, it feels "in" at the moment to feel the average person thinks that Splinter was originally a human. Let's not forget the first NES game where Splinter turns human when you defeat Shredder.

I've said this enough times in other topics, but I much more strongly prefer Splinter being a rat from the get-go, although I applaud the efforts of IDW for merging the two origins, even if I don't care for the reincarnation deal itself. I never would have seen that coming, had I not known about it before reading it.
For all the"unrealistic" flak the rat origin gets, I think that the human origin is much more puzzling, especially since I feel the Mirage properties of the ooze make a heck of a lot more sense. As for the hyper-intelligent rat part... c'mon, this is comic book logic. Extraordinarily intelligent animals happen.

i think having smart animals from the get-go makes their mutation less special, so no, I will never like the idea of splinter practicing his master's moves from his cage. i respect that others like it, and since it is the mirage origin it has very deep roots in the series and i can't dismiss it. if every version of the origin used that depiction, i would be perfectly fine with it, but since we have all these divergences in the story, i prefer the human version.

First of all, Image is part of Mirage continuity so it doesn't count as a new version of Splinter.
Second of all, Dreamwave never went on long enough to be its own universe. It had 4 episode adaptions and two filler stories that could easily fit into the 4kids universe in Season 1.
Third of all, Movie 4 and Next Mutation were loose continuations of the Movie universe so they are not new Splinters either.
So I don't know why people need to make this more complicated than it has to be.

Not to be pedantic, but if you're going to count TMNT Adventures and the 1987 cartoon as two different continuities, you can't lump Next Mutation, the first three movies, and arguably TMNT (2007) together willy-nilly.
They all share common background elements, but none of their separate creative teams have ever confirmed they branch off from one another, as opposed to TMNTA, which expressly began as a 1:1 adaptation of the show. Next Mutation in particular contradicts the movies more than Adventures ever does its Fred-Wolf origins.
So, yeah. I'm being totally pedantic.

The difference is even thought the Archie universe shared the Season 1 storyline, it then became its own thing with different origins for charaçers who appeared in both like Leatherhead, Mondo Gecko, etc. They also retconned the Turtles as having a childhood and more of Yoshi's background that the show didn't do.
Next Mutation and Movie 4 started out as if we already knew the characters, no origin was given. I am not saying they take place with each other, I view Next Mutation as one alternate timeline that happened after Movie 3 while the 2007 movie is another split in the timeline.
Jester brought up the Archie series could be a split timeline with the show when Armaggon used his timeslip generator to go back in time and alter the events of Season 2. It's fascinating to think about.

Just as Next Mutation, if it even shares a background with the movies, must have deviated before even the events of the first movie could have taken place.
Shredder's alive, there's no April, no Casey, no events from the movies are referenced, etc.
It's as different, if not more so, than Adventures is from the Fred-Wolf show.
And we know next to nothing about the 2007 movie, except that its creative team have said they had in mind that it might or might not continue from the previous films.
It's exactly the same relationship Adventures has to Fred-Wolf; a shared origin, then quickly branching off from there. Only these entries are even less explicit about that shared origin.
CyberCubed

But we never got an origin for Splinter in Next Mutation. We just assume its the rat origin because of the movie background influence. As for the lack of April and Casey there were always rumors they were going to appear if the show got a second season. I always assumed they already knew April/Casey in the series.
Besides Next Mutation is a poor series anyway, we don't need to make sense of what was essentially a trainwreck.

This thread just reminded me of the first time I saw the original movie. Right after Raphael's initial meetup with Casey we see him go home and get lectured by Splinter about his temper. The very moment Splinter said "My Master Yoshi's first rule..." I was all like "Wait a minute. Hamato Yoshi had a Master Yoshi?!"

The rat origin gives Splinter a revenge motive to kill Shredder for killing his master.
The human origin makes Splinter and Shredder rivals, but this way its more personal.

The Image series is just like the archie series
sure it has similar beginnings (one being the mirage beginning, the other adapting the first few episodes) but it ended up being it's own story
so you either count Image a serperate series or count Archie series as an untold side of the fred wolf
simple as that
the same thing is said about Next Mutation, Shredder is alive, so it is not in continuity from the movies... The Next Mutation universe may branch off from the movie universe, but it is still it's own universe... it's just like the Multi-verse of Digimon, how Adveture branches off from one of the manga, since Taichi is loosely based on Kentarou, but yet it's its own story
And IDW shouldn't be counted as either
One, he is not "technically Hamato Yoshi" instead it is his soul... That is why the Triangle is: Heart, Body, and Soul. 2. His body is physically a rat, a mutated rat, not a mutated human... no trace of human dna in him, but he is 100% a rat
so as of now, only four universes have Splinter as a human

Is this a joke? When Image started it was written as a direct sequel to Volume 2, with both Kevin and Peter approving of it. It was a direct continuation of the Mirage universe and why there is no "Mirage Volume 3."
Only after did PL decide he wanted Vol. 4 to start off fresh with no mutilations. And then we got the Image conclusion anyway.

Remeber, when they said that it was a sequel, there was no plans at the time for Volume four to come out...
and since Volume four pretty much re-conned everthing volume 3 started, it made the whole story as if it never happened...
again... It BRANCHED off into it's own universe... be it intentional or not at the time, that is the out come as of now
"A Multiverse or multi-verse is an infinite number of universes in which all possible events occur."
and that is all there is to it
This is the same arguement of "Same as it never was" sure it was a possible future in the beginning, but now, it's in it's own universe (Turtles Forever)
And TMNT is in it's own universe now, even though it was suppose to be canon to the past three movies, thanks to Turtles Forever
despite what one may think... Canon means more than Fanons and Head-canons... if you think anyother way, people will just laugh at your stupidity

The Image series is arguable. The last 2 issues do tie it back in to volume 4, but since they're not strictly official, technically speaking it ended on a cliffhanger that just plain doesn't jive with volume 4. But most people do accept the last 2 issues as official, so... There we are.

i agree. the rat in the cage gaining so many skills that he eventually even becomes able to train students always seemed weird to me and made only really sense in the original logic of the ot, the tmnt being just a one shot comic parody of classic superhero comics. because there any crazyness is awesome. but as the mirage series became a longer comic with history this always seemed to be a bit too goofy for me.
also, why should splinter love his dead owner so strongly that he feels urge for revenge? when his owner was actually the one who held him for years inside a cage?
splinter being originally hamato yoshi made more sense to me. i found it weird in the ot series that he would chose to live in the sewers of new york though. so the new nick version deals that a bit better. i just dislike that one mutants now to what was the last surrounding. it felt more right when it had to do with what one had to deal with the most time of life (yoshi living in harmony with rats for years). but at least it makes sense for splinter to hide in the sewers after being transformed into a monstrous creature. i think it is strange though that he didn't begin to have interest himself into fighting the kraang after the turtles find their mutagen. where's his initiative? why is he just staying at home?
so to me the nick version has the most potential, but i fear that a cartooney show will always handle big story arcs in a more dull way than the mirage comic would have.
i don't come along well with the idw reincarnaton concept. it doesn't work for me at all :ohwell:

Some characters (Leatherhead, Mondo Gecko) have different origins in Archie and the 1987 show, so it's not the same universe.
If it was knewn already from the start how Archie would become, they would probably use a new origin story.

The human to rat mutation makes more sense logically. However, I like the fact that there is no human form/equivalent.
Splinter as a rat transformed to human, is his own person - completely separate to Hamato Yoshi (even though he does adopt many of his qualities). Human to rat transformation IS Yoshi.
By eliminating the rat to human mythos, you have effectively removed a character - THE Splinter.

Just my two cents.
As I was growing up, my very first interaction with the TMNT was the first live action movie. It was engraved in my mind and remains my favorite incarnation of the Turtles. And the themes of family resounded a lot more in that film than in the OT. Splinter seemed more like a boss than a father in the OT, at least from what I saw. Perhaps someone could enlighten me about the subject. However, seeing Splinter being first as Hamato Yoshi has always seemed off to me, even though I loved the OT. So, even though it doesn't make much sense, I prefer it that way. (I justify my mind saying that Splinter was a very special rat)
However, even though it goes against my beliefs, I kinda dig the approach the new comics took on the matter.

oh I understand this... but more I was going on the physical body side of things, not the soul thing
...
as for which version of Splinter, I prefer the rat, Why? It's classic.
now on to how a rat knows martial arts...
I always pictured it that it was Splinter just watching Yoshi doing those moves, not mimicking them
Then as he mutated into a rat, and thought of how to keep him and the turtles safe, he recalled upon what he remembered. To fill in the gap of what Splinter doesn't know of Ninjutsu, he used animal instinct to make up for what he doesn't know (such as turning Fight to Flight to stay in the shadows or defend oneself). This would also explain the turtle's "brawling" like style from the first issue of the comics
but that is just how I see it

My very first introduction to Splinter and the Turtles was through the first movie, so it's pretty much impossible for me to shake from my head the origin storyline that was presented there. I greatly prefer Splinter as being mutated from an actual pet rat, and as I didn't take to the show growing up and simply watched the movies over and over again, I was pretty weirded out when I first learned he was actually mutated from Yoshi. Even now that I've grown used to the idea, it still bothers me, mostly because I feel like it severs that bond Splinter has with the Turtles as a family. As a human (especially one with another family), I have a difficult time seeing how he could really come to love the Turtles as his true sons as opposed to pets or pupils. But as a rat who found four helpless baby turtles, it just makes more sense to me that he would have a genuine sense of fatherly protectiveness over them that only grew as they all aged.

sure. but the turtle father laird dismissed image and started his own thing again without any interest to push the image main writers to direct their series back into his canon.
so i doubt it is important what is the "true" story of a comic. but i would view image stuff (i like it!) as a seperate possible development.

I have to agree, as great as Andrew's Image conclusion was, it's still a fan project, it doesn't officially put Volume 3 back into continuity. If you want to include Volume 3 in your personal canon then it lets you do that, wrapping everything up and joining the dots in a way that's nothing short of amazing, but that doesn't make it official. The official Mirage canon is still the in house Vol. 1, Vol. 2 and Vol. 4 (plus Tales Vol. 1+2)
Just like Archie split off from the OT, Image split off from Mirage. That may not be what was intended at the time, but it is how things are today. So if you count Archie as separate from the OT then you have to count Image as separate from Mirage.

These are the only continuities of TMNT:
Cartoons:
- Original cartoon (all 193 episodes)
- 4kids cartoon (all 157 episodes)
- Nick cartoon
Comics:
- Mirage continuity (Volume 1, 2, Image, Volume 4, Tales v. 1 and 2, and assorted specials and mini's)
- IDW continuity
- Archie TMNT Adventures Continuity
Movies:
- Movies 1, 2 and 3 (all canon)
Movie 4 and Next Mutation are up to intepertation, but have been basically billed as, "loose continuations" of past universes. Hence why the characters already exist and we're not re-introduced to them as an origin story.
And of course there's that new Michael Bay movie...which is definitely going to be a reboot.

Peter Laird has said it's not in continuity. He didn't call his TMNT Vol. 3 out of respect for the Image creative team and to avoid confusion, but he doesn't count it as canon.
End of that discussion ;)
And Cubed half of Vol. 1 isn't canon, that's not something Laird did in 2001 it's something Eastman and Laird acknowledged in the original comics, otherwise how could #45 mark a return to continuity if everything previous was in continuity.
Vol. 3 and Vol. 4 are the same as Archie and the OT. They start off from the same point (picking up after the events of Vol. 2) but go in different directions.
If we lump TNM with the movies in a "live action" universe, TMNT, like Archie and Image, is again an off shoot of that universe, an alternative to TNM. So you're really looking at something like this;
RAT
Mirage
Image
Live Action (Movies/TNM)
TMNT
2K3 (plus Dreamwave)
HUMAN

And that's not counting all the guest writer stuff in Mirage (some stuff like Zulli's is clearly its own continuity), the Manga (another OT off shoot?) and probably some other stuff I've missed.

If we lump TNM with the movies in a "live action" universe, TMNT, like Archie and Image, is again an off shoot of that universe, an alternative to TNM. So you're really looking at something like this;
RAT
Mirage
Image
Live Action (Movies/TNM)
TMNT
2K3 (plus Dreamwave)
HUMAN
OT
Archie
Nick
BOTH
IDW
ALIEN
Paramount Movie :twink:

Nice save! Way to get this thread back on track. I applaud you sir.:tgrin:
I don't think it really concerns me that the human origin is outnumbering the normal rat origin. I think that the only thing that really matters to me is that (1) yoshi plays a major role in how splinter teaches and treats the Turtles and (2) yoshi is not omitted from splinters origin and (3) the rat is a normal rat from earth. IDW does a great job combining the two origins.... whether you like the reincarnation bit or not...
P.s. I love the ending that was made for v3... but like some here have stated... I still consider it noncanon due to its current unofficial status. Despite its approval from several of the old staff... Eastman included... it is hard to accept it as an actual conclusion.

Lard might dismiss Vol. 3 as non-canon (as well as stories like The River) But he also made a good gap between Vol. 3 and Vol. 4 that could easily be filled with an explanation on how the turtles turned back to normal.
As for Splinter's origin. I prefer having Splinter and Hamato Yoshi as two different beings.
But with that said. Nick did a good job with the origin, making Hamato a Mutant before he lived in the sewer, makes much more sense then Fred Wolfs version. Fred Wolf was bounded that Splinter is a ninja bipedal rat that lives in the sewer, making him a mutated human they wrote themselves in a corner when Hamato choses not to be a human again or even claim the Foot Clan, when Hamato knows he is the true heir to the clan and have proof. Instead he lets Shredder have the clan to degrade it more into crime.

Look these are it's own continuity of the multi-verse of tmnt... all confirmed canon as a seperate thing
"A Multiverse or multi-verse is an infinite number of universes in which all possible events occur."
Main known ones
Mirage
Image (it's branched off, it doesn't have an official ending, it isn't officially confirmed as canon to the mirage series, at one point it was, but not anymore)
Archie
IDW
IDW Nick (possible new continuity)
Fred Wolf cartoon
The Next Mutation (The Shredder is alive... it isn't in continuity to the movie, this fits the definition of multi-verse, so it's in it's own continuity... though, you could argue about it belonging to the franchise, Nick hasn't said if they accepted it)
03 cartoon
Nick Show
Movie 1-3
Imagi movie
others:
Super Hero turtles
Kappa Turtles
Same as it never was
Anime OVA
others I'm still trying to figure out which is which
and cybercubed
by definition, these other stories that branches off with similar beginnings but different out comes, though similar to others, belong into their own continuity...
So there it is. Everything is solved.
And unless stated other wise by Nick themselves, the above list of Turtles sories *plus what I can't figure out* is the official list of what is in it's own continuity... this of course ignoring the "2 x the anime turtles" and the joke 4 kids paper craft turtles. and Official words always will overshadow fanon ideas, no matter how well it is.
Imagine it this way
Mirage turtles is the main tree
The series like Movies, 87 cartoon, 2003 cartoon, and the nick show are the tree's limbs
this makes, Archie, Imagi, Next Mutation, and Same As It Never Was is the branches on those limbs

That's not true at all, many of those mid-Vol. 1 issues are canon. With the exception of the obvious wacky/parody issues.
And I find it funny you're listening to what PL feels, he can't retcon anything now that he is not the owner.

They fit into the canon, they're not part of the official canon, important difference.
Eastman and Laird are still co-creators even if they're no longer owners. And Peter still retains the rights to continue the Mirage universe so I'd say his opinion still carries some weight.

I always thought it made more sense to have Splinter BE Yoshi the whole time. I've heard Spliter as a pet rat was already sort of "special" which is why he was able to mimic the martial arts (in that origin version), but still...unless he was a "magic rat", seems less believable to me. He didn't get mutated till after he learned the martial arts. Had he gotten mutated first, THEN it'd make more sense, him gaining more intelligence, why he'd learn the moves so easily.
Anyway I prefer the Spinter IS Yoshi origin story.

Some cases, this works (All-Star Superman, Dark Knight Returns)
In others, it just sends home the message a long standing franchise has had it's day (616 Spider-Man)

probably because it was Laird that bought Eastman's half of the turtles... so Peter's word at the time held a stronger impact

Where has he ever explicitly stated this? It's well known what Laird considers canon and that Eastman is more open to change/different interpretations, but where has he ever explicitly stated that he considers the guest issues canon?
probably because it was Laird that bought Eastman's half of the turtles... so Peter's word at the time held a stronger impact
And there's this. Laird was the one behind Vol. 4 and Tales Vol. 2, he was the one who continued the Mirage universe from 2001-2010 and still retains the rights to continue it if he so desires. So yeah, I'd say his opinion is important.
It doesn't stop you having those issues in your personal canon (same for Image and the fan conclusion) but they're not part of the official canon.

PL never even posted a list of what issues he considers canon. So how do you even know which ones he's talking about? Obviously the crazy parody issues aren't canon, but several other Volume 1 stories fit in with the rest of the universe just fine. PL never actually mentioned which either.
You're going by something that is no longer relevant.

Quite a few people emailed Dan Berger back in the early Vol. 4 days, there are threads from that time discussing it. The lists varied a bit but generally contained the same issues.
This is from an email I had with Dan in mid 2003;
> do you have a list of comics that are considered “in-continuity” by Peter?
Here's the list that was just given to me today:
TMNT volume 1 #1-15, 19-21, 28, 29, 45-62
Raphael #1
Michaelangelo #1
Leonardo #1
Donatello #1
Fugitoid #1
Fugitoid/Gizmo crossover
Tales of the TMNT #1-7
TMNT volume 2 #1-13
TMNT volume 4 #1-current issue
And from DrSpengler's thread;
Dan's list of "for sures" was:
TMNT Vol. 1 #1-15, 17, 19-21, 45-62
TMNT Vol. 2 #1-13
TMNT Vol. 4 #1-28
All 5 Micro Series
Tales Vol. 1 #1-7
Tales Vol. 2 #1-31
So pretty much the issues done by the in-house Mirage guys, give or take a few (Dooney's 27 and Farley's 43 didn't appear on the lists Spengs and I got but I think 27 appear on lists some others got back in the day).
Why is it no longer relevant? Just because Laird no longer owns the franchise? What difference does that make to what was the official Mirage canon? He still wrote it!
Why does it matter so much anyway? No one is saying those issues don't count or can't fit if you want them to. Image isn't canon, it's still a good story and, as Andrew showed, can still fit into the Mirage continuity if you want it to. Certainly no one's arguing that we call each guest story its own continuity and add them to the list in this thread. The argument was only being made for Image to be counted separate from Mirage as, like Archie, it was a substantial run and could count as a proper incarnation of the TMNT (unlike the many guest stories in Vol. 1).
CyberCubed

It matters because its no longer relevant. Several issues of Volume 1 tie into stuff later on. The events of "The River" have a flashback in issue #28 for example. Those issues about the Halls of Lost Legends and Renet all fit into the overall continuity.
And Image was intended to be canon when it was written, which makes it canon. In fact the stories of Image are directly continued off the events from before it.
Don't forget that Leatherhead's Utrom friend Dr. X re-appears in Tales of the TMNT v.2 as a friend to him again.
But we never got an origin for Splinter in Next Mutation. We just assume its the rat origin because of the movie background influence. They clearly say Splinter was Yoshi pet rat.

The River being referenced in 28 is the biggest "problem" in Laird's official canon (that and the Savage Dragon reference in Vol. 2) and that's 1 page in 28 that could easily be removed/overlooked without affecting the narrative.
Hall of Legends isn't referenced anywhere else in the official canon as far as I'm aware, I think the only other place I've seen it is in Andrew's Image conclusion. And Farley is a Mirage guy so you could make an argument for 43's inclusion anyway (his 29 was on the list Dan sent me and like I said the lists did vary a bit, Eastman/Talbot's 17 wasn't in the list he sent me but was on the list he send Spengs when 28+29 weren't). Same for the Renet/Savanti Juliet stuff, nothing is affected by it's removal.
Removing the guest writers stories from the official canon doesn't hurt anything, but at the same time including them doesn't either. Heck Dooney's 27 doesn't appear on the list sent to me or Spengs (I think it did for others), nor does Farley's 43 (I don't think it appeared on any list he gave out). I count them both as part of my personal canon, I just don't confuse that with what was officially recognised as/stated to be canon.
Peter Laird/Mirage had a list of what he/they recognised as the official canon issues for Vol. 1 (and beyond). If we as fans want to add or remove issues from what we personally consider canon then that's our right, but we asked the question and we got the official answer. No one has come out and said this has change since the sale, and Peter Laird retains the right to do more Mirage TMNT comics, he's still in charge of (what's left of) Mirage Studios. Yes IDW can do comics based in the Mirage universe if they want to, but until they do (and even then, until they do anything to contradict) there's no reason to say that the official canon has been thrown out.
And Image was intended to be canon when it was written, which makes it canon. In fact the stories of Image are directly continued off the events from before it.
Do you read any comics besides TMNT? Things are written as canon then abandoned all the time. It's a LOT rarer in TMNT I'll grant you (and I'm extremely thankful for that) but it happens.
Vol. 4 and Tales Vol. 2 were written with Vol. 3 being non-canon. Think of it as a road after Vol. 2 you go left to Vol. 3 or right to Vol. 4. Just like after OT Season 1 you go one way for seasons 2-10 and another for Archie's TMNT Adventures.
Some Tales Vol. 2 writers may throw fans a bone (like cameos by Dr. X and Puzorelli) but that doesn't make the Image Vol. 3 canon. Many TMNT characters appear in multiple incarnations of the franchise, Tales Vol. 2 also gave us Mirage versions of Hun and a small cameo by Agent Bishop.
Again, unless IDW release any new, Mirage continuity material, that explicitly references the events of the Image run, then there's no reason to believe this has changed. Being honest I'd prefer it if they didn't, if they're going to do new Image based stories I'd love them to get Gary and Frank back and let them finish the story their way without worrying about tying back into Vol. 4 or wrapping up loose ends from Tales. Andrew has already done that for the fans and it was amazing, let the original team do it their way.
Look, this really isn't worth arguing about. The Vol. 1 stuff is completely irrelevant to this thread, and the Image debate is going round in circles. You personally count Image as part of the Mirage canon (as I'm sure a lot of others do, especially after Andrew his team did such an amazing job with 24+25) but the fact remains it was officially removed from the canon so for the purposes of this thread it should be counted as a separate incarnation of TMNT.

Well my main point was that there are only 3 real TMNT comic continuities:
- Mirage
- Archie
- IDW
IDW is the "reboot" that restarts the franchise. We've only ever had one reboot of the comics.
Chris
10-10-2012, 04:14 PM
On that we're agreed :tsmile:
Image is an off-shoot of Mirage. It counts as a separate incarnation (at least to in my opinion) but it definitely wasn't a reboot.
We've had out of explicitly continuity comics and we've had stuff that was in continuity but later dropped, but never a proper reboot before IDW.
Vol. 4 didn't retcon Image though. It took place a few years after Image ended in the timeline. Nothing that happened in Image contradicts Vol. 4 or vice versa.Nothing except for the fact that the Turtles aren't all mutilated in Vol. 4.

But, wasn't it originally intended to end Vol. 3 with the turtles healed up, similar to Adrew's issue 24 & 25?
I vaguely remember that was mentioned somewhere.
