I can think of two off-hand: I thought the comic book was over with by the time the OT came out, and I believed Usagi was a TMNT character. (Which makes sense, because I was never into comic books as a boy.)

Back in the days before I joined here, I often wondered why the Turtles were all "dressed like Raph" on the NES game's cover. I knew nothing about the Mirage books then. To me TMNT comics were Archie....well and I knew of the Image books...but passed on them because of the over the top violence.

Uhhh, hard to say. One thing that comes to mind is when I discovered the comics as a kid, I was SUPER confused. I bought an issue of Archie, Vol. 1 & the Image series all at once, thinking they were the same series. The issue numbers corresponded so I of course assumed they were in continuity with eachother (not that I thought in those terms, haha). I was ridiculously confused. In one they're in a maze with robot foot soldiers, the next they're time traveling with a child and feeding an obese Superman, then suddenly Donny is a cyborg, Raph is Casey, Splinter's a bat, Casey has a chainsaw... I never picked up the comics again until I was an adult. Hahaha.

Same as above about TMNT(1989) NES. It was confusing! I too passed on Image to this day because of the over the top violence that does not seem like the Ninja Turtles I know. I remember the cover #3. I bought thinking it was Armaggon on the cover, but I was unfortuantely wrong.
Ditto on Usagi! I was blown away when I learned he was not a TMNT but was the lead of his own set of characters.
Krang not a comic character at first. I knew better by age 11 just like the above two.
Almost forgot,I thought Eastman and Laird that was stamped on the Archie TMNT Adventures comics was the production compan that made the comics for Archie not knowing they were the co-creators during the original run. Not until 1998 when I finished my Archie set did I realize who they were.
I thought Karai was Shredder's step daughter anywhere she was involved in TMNT apparently she is not in the Mirage/Image Comics. I only learned this LAST WEEK!
I erroneousl thought that the source material (Mirage's b&w comic) was certainly superior... until I bought an issue. :tgrumble:

They all wore red bandannas and they had tails.
Splinter raised the Turtles specifically to kill the Shredder, and that guy died by the end of the first comic. I remember being so shocked about that.

Dan told me to pronounce it like "burger" or like whatever language it came from "bear-guh". I'm certain Steve's is pronounced the same as Avril's despite the added G.

I never actually watched the OT growing up, just the movies, primarily the first movie, and when I started to catch TMNT on TV again, it was the 2003 series. So I was always under the impression it was a somewhat serious show with bits of humor thrown in to lighten the mood every once in awhile (since it was, after all, targeted towards kids). I've actually been pretty weirded out to realize how many fans prefer a lighter, more comical portrayal as opposed to darker, more mature themes.

I thought the Utroms were Krang, or at least he was one of them.
The first movie made me realize the Turtles were very different from the cartoons. When I saw the movies I figured the comics would have human Foot Soldiers and Splinter would be mutated from a rat.
If anything the first movie was almost like our gateway drug to the Mirage comics.

I thought that the Foot Soldiers from the OT were humans at first -- which freaked me out a little when, in my first episode I'd ever seen, Mikey backflipped away from their laser beams and two melted each other to slag. Probably why I'm so fascinated with the special death animation of plasma weapons in the Fallout series... albeit, closer to one's fascination with horror films than anything else.

Oh wow. I actually totally agree with this. I love Mirage later down the line, but the enjoyment I get out of the first dozen or so issues is definitely of the "because it's so raw/aw, they were having fun" variety.
Uhhh, anyway, I obviously didn't discover the source material for a while as a kid, although I'd read the first several issues (my parents actually bought it) before the Fred-Wolf toon had ended. So I was at least clued into the black-and-white, all red masks, Shredder dead in the first issue stuff earlier than most.
Other than that, I 'unno. I also thought Usagi was a Turtles character for a long time.
Oh, and I played the SNES Tournament Fighters for years without knowing where Armaggon, War and Karai came from. Karai was actually the first one who's origin I discovered. I knew hardly anything about Adventures until I became a fan again in my late teens.
For a long time I didn't know who or what the Utroms were. I liked the word, though, and I still do. Like little squidgy pink umlauts.

The first time I saw Usagi was on his own #10 cover with Leonardo back in the late '80s. At the time I thought it was some foreign TMNT comic. It wasn't until I bought and read it that I realized otherwise. Then of course I got Turtle Soup and there he was again.
Also, I always pronounced Steve Lavigne's name incorrectly until Avril became popular.

For me, it would be that when I first saw on the OT that the TMNT were based on comic book characters, they were based on older versions that inspired the TMNT, and that Archie was the only comic volume ever released and that of course Fred Wolf was the original version of the franchise. I also thought the movies were made independent of everything and just a fresh take and not based off of the Mirage comics. I originally thought "Mirage Studios" was just a production company that worked with Fred Wolf and Golden Harvest that supported their productions by providing stuff such as character designs and props. This was when I was about five, six, seven years old.

I thought the OT was the source material for awhile until I started reading articles on the TMNT in magazines and got ahold of a Mirage TMNT graphic novel at the local bookstore.
I was also surprised to learn that Panda Khan wasn't a TMNT character as well.

I assumed that the Fast Forward season was pretty much the end of the 4Kids TMNT series. IMO, the episodes were terrible in comparison and constant schedule/channel changes, which are typical for a dying show, kept confusing my DVR. So I just stopped watching. It wasn't until after I watched the premier airing of Turtles Forever that I discovered not only did the series last to see them return home, but that there was an entire final "Back to the Sewers" season after that. So I was excited to buy the season when it was released on DVD, but we never got it here in the states. Seen a few of them on youtube now though. Looks like it was a good farewell season!

Before I started using the internet back in 1995-1996:
- During the original animated series, I had no idea that Usagi Yojimbo wasn't an original TMNT character.
- The cover of the NES TMNT game confused the hell out of me as well. I thought they were just too lazy to color the headbands of the other turtles...
- ...which leads into me not knowing the Turtles were created as a comic book I did find this out eventually before even going on the internet.

Living in the UK comics were never that main stream, so all I knew growing up was the OT and some of the Archie reprints we got.
It was after TNM when I next saw a Turtles comic, I picked up an issue of Image (#10 with the Savage Dragon crossover) which totally confused me. I'd heard about the changes in a letter column of another comic (Superman where someone was comparing his change to the electric blue Superman with the changes made to Don and Raph) so I was expecting that, but going from OT to Image was just too strange, plus they were hard to find (didn't know about pull lists back then) so that was all I read.
On a nostalgia kick about 1999/2000 (when I finally had dial up at home) I discovered the official site, learnt about the original comics, ordered a load and I've never looked back.
So yeah, until I learnt the truth all I knew was OT, like everyone else I thought the all red bandanas were knock offs or lazy artists (I remember having a nice set of pin badges with red bandanas but I thought they were fakes!), I had no idea what an utrom was or that there were different kinds of ooze in the comics to the cartoon.
I think that's why I loved 2K3 so much, I'd just discovered all these amazing stories in the comics and then along came a new show that adapted them (at least as much as possible for kids TV).

More specifically, Archie published TMNT Adventures, a 72 issue run of comics that originated as a comic-based adaptation of the cartoon, then began its own original storylines, written by Mirage scribe Stephen Murphy under the pseudonym "Dean Clarrain".

Aside from it having anything to do with the "Coming out of our Shells" tour, you're otherwise entirely right.

I have to disagree. I think Mirage's early issues were a lot of fun. It might not be what everyone expects once they hear about the violence in issue one, but it's a lot of sci-fi fun.
Anyway, I didn't notice the sword in the original logo until a couple of years ago.

I never thought there was a black Baxter Stockman until the 2003 cartoon came out. Then I found out he was black in the mirage comic books.
Also, it took me years to find out that Kluh (from the battle nexus in the 2003 show) is hulk spelled backwards and he came from Dimension Levram (Marvel spelled backwards).
And I thought the red sky episodes were a different show from the first 7 seasons of the original show until I saw the episode guide.

Yeah that's another thing. I wasn't aware there was a black Baxter until I started poking around the comics section of the local bookstore at the mall and came across a set of Mirage TMNT graphic novels. I also wasn't aware that Splinter was originally a normal rat in the original series instead of a human. Actually there's a lot I didn't know until I came across those graphic novels.

I never got into comic books as a kid. They were too short, and I always got irritated when I finished one in a few minutes and had to wait. It still bugs me. All single issues I've ever owned stack about a foot high.
That being said, I did have this volume, as a kid.

I didnt read the original comics as a kid (just Archie), so when I saw the first movie, being used to the OT cartoon, I was confused about Raphael's behavior and wondered why he was so mad all the time lol! And one thing I also remember thinking about it was wondering why it seemed to be night all the time in the movie and that a lot of the scenes were dark.

The typical thing most fans thought that only knew about the OT.
wondering why they 'messed up' and had all four turtles wear red on the cover of the NES game
wondering why Raph was so angry and swearing in the movie
I always thought the movie had human Foot soldiers and whatever due to them not having the budget to go all out with robot Foot Soldiers, Bebop, Rocksteady, Krang and the Technodrome.
I thought Aska was a Mirage TMNT character, not a Konami original.
Luckily I read up alot on the Mirage stuff before the 2K3 cartoon came along or I woulda been confused.

I never questioned the NES cover, since the colors was okay in the game itself. And I knew very quickly that the Archie comic and the cartoon was based on another comic that I had never read.
It wasn't until much later when I had free access to the Internet on school that I found ninjaturtes.com and learned more about Mirage comics, the original mask colors and that a new cartoon (2k3) was in the making.
I was never a huge fan of the Fred Wolf series as a kid, we didn't have the channel that was showing it, so I mostly got to see episodes by VHS rental, which was often the more crummy episodes, like Super Irma and the Musketeer episode, and the terrible dubbing didn't help either. Don and Mikey sounded like helium frogs, and Krang was basically the same voice April had only with a echo filter on.
So my focal point was the Archie comics, the Live-Action movie and the action figures.
