View Full Version : Any word yet if Playmates is continuing the classics line with OT Shredder, Krang?

Apparently the 4 classic OT Turtles have been selling extremely well. Playmates said if they sold well we'd see them continue the line with other characters or other Turtles.
I think Shredder, Krang, Bebop and Rocksteady released would do very well in a line like this, and I'm hoping to finally see toon accurate versions of those 4 especially in the same vein.
Any news yet?

Man I really hope so, I can't imagine how awesome those characters would all look in the style of these classic figures.
If you think about it though, making the four Turtles just required four (almost) identically molds, and four completely different and new characters would probably require a lot more. Hopefully they're selling well enough to justify that though.
The biggest problem I see is the scale, in the 80s toon the Turtles were always a little shorter than most of the other characters, so that would mean Shredder and the rest would need to be closer to 7 inches.

The Classics are the best figures playmates has made in a long time, so I really hope we get a 2nd wave of 4 figures. Splinter, Shredder, Bebop, Rocksteady. Easy money! I know everyone wants Krang... but his android body is ugly as sin. I'd buy him but not before Splinter or Shredder. I think those figures are more marketable than Krang, too.
Splinter, in action figure form, has had a tough time. IMO every one of his figures is flawed (with the very first figure still being my favorite) so a definitive version is badly needed.
Sorry but we do not have screen-accurate versions of shredder or splinter yet from the OT so these are badly needed. Collectors would be lining up around the block.
I am a huge fan of the Nick TMNT figures from playmates too and I hope Playmates does some larger, highly-articulated versions of the Nick characters someday.
I feel like they are selling well judging from the amount of sell outs online and how people are not seeing many of them in stores. They really hit a good spot with price/articulation/sculpt so I can only hope that we see more releases.

They could get creative and have Bebop and Rocksteady share a body. Whatever makes them unique (Bebop's Vest & knee brace, Rocksteady's belt) could be an add on accessory. At the least they could share legs and arms.
Knowing Playmates, I'm expecting the 2nd wave to be the same figures as the first wave, just with white eyes and a pizza accessory.

white eyes would fix the "derpy" problem.

The classics have been very difficult to find in my area.TRU was the only place to get thme and once they sold out they have yet to restock them.

I want to see the line continue, but not if it's going to continue to be a TRU only thing. The only TRU close enough to drive to is an absolute crap shoot when it comes to stock. Most especially with stuff only they sell. My parents asked me for a Christmas list this year, so I put Classic Collection Raph on there, but I don't expect them to have any luck finding him, assuming they even try that is...
If they can get at least one other store interested in selling the line, say Target for example, I'd love to see it expand out to cover most, if not all, of the different TMNT incarnations (even Next Mutation). There'll inevitably be scale issues due to the size of the Turtles.
I wouldn't object to them also making figures of this size, including the detail and articulation, for the Nick designs. Most especially a Master Splinter figure.

I'm not sure what you mean by TRU Only I got my figures from Target personally and I have seen them at local Comic Book Shops as well and there have been pictures of them in a Wal-Mart. The only known TRU Exclusive Turtles merchandise right now is the 11'' Battle Shell figures.

And the Sewer Lair.
I think that may apply to US only. It's apparently available at Sears in Canada. Cheaper there too at $109 (see link below). In fact, if it was bought in September at Sears.ca, because it's part of their Xmas catalog it would've been like $90 or something with a promo they were running. They won't ship outise CA so since I live in the states I bought mine at TRU. Got it the week before the price increase and used the $10 off >$35 TMNT promotion in addition to a $20 email coupon and applied for a credit card to save an additional 10%. Got it for around $80. I'm satisfied with that price. :D

Since unlike NECA which was a small company that went down after unimpressive April sales, there is very little doubt that a new wave of Classics won't be made. However, until we get confirmation since Playmates is a big company and has numerous other franchises/lines to market, don't guarantee yourself that there will be more Classics. Shredder, Krang, Bebop and Rocksteady could be market as "The Bad Guys" just like in the old days and sell well, and perhaps release Splinter, April, and Casey next for "The Good Guys" set. I would like Android Krang as opposed to Bubble Walker Krang due to the popularity of his Android version.

First I've heard of them actually being found outside of TRU and comic shops. I had heard that Walmart turned down the line, and a rumor that Target was supposedly getting them in. Good to know they're available elsewhere. I'll have look for them the next time I'm going through Walmart and Target.

For what it's worth, I ordered them all from playmates' website a few weeks back and emailed customer service about the possibility of expanding the line. She was pretty vague but her answer made me feel optimistic.

Well, Playmates did want to make a cyber Splinter build a figure, so I think they will do a BAF at some point.
Anyway, here is what I think wave 2 should be
Classic Master Splinter Figure
Accessories-Removable cloth robe, cane, Yin-Yang symbol base, and build a figure Krang part (right arm).
Classic Shredder Figure
Accessories-Removable cloth cape, Foot Clan symbol base, and build a figure Krang part (Torso with head (this is where the arms and legs connect) and a classic, mini Krang figure to go into the stomach).
Classic Bebop and Rocksteady Figures (Two pack)
Accessories-Laser Blasters (the ones they used in the show), Turtle shell bases, and build a figure Krang parts (left and right legs).
Classic April O' Neil Figure
Accessories-Camera, Video Recorder, Microphone, a removable belt to hold them, a Pizza pie base, and a build a Krang figure part (Left arm).
I think those bases would be awesome rather than them all having the same sewer base. What do you guys think?

yet you'd rather drive around and look for these things and waste gas money? Doesn't quite make sense, but thats just my opinion.
It's very apparent that few in not any stores are still selling these, yet people continue to look for them....again, doesn't make sense.
Ordered mine the day they were released on Amazon, paid 16 bucks a figure and had free shipping. So shipping costs really aren't a factor.

I love this idea but Playmates made these toys unbelievably hard to get in my area! :tmad: And as for the question as to "Why don't you just buy them online?" I'd love to but we all saw that a lot of the figures had paint problems (especially with the eyes) so I don't want to spend $17-$35 on a figure that might look right.
The thing that makes me really mad is I saw all of them when my local Toys R Us got them in stock the one and only time they did. But they all had paint problems (oddly enough except for one Donatello!) so I only got Donnie. It's just very frustrating when you want to buy a product and it's unnecessarily hard to buy them. :tconfuse:

I'd be VERY surprised if the Classics line continued with more characters. I could see a second wave with repaints/retools of the 4 turtles, but as for Shredder, Splinter etc, I think that's doubtful.

I think a lot of people are hesitant to buy action figures online due to potential quality issues - and rightfully so. A lot of toy companies recently have really dropped the ball on maintaining consistent high quality.
Also, most toy collectors are going to be out driving around looking at toys anyways, so it isn't like they are eliminating gas expenditure by ordering online. Plus there's the 'thrill of the hunt.'
At least all that is true for me, and probably for many others as well.
But back on topic, I think a new wave is unlikely but if it happened a BAF Krang is a GREAT idea!

would love to see a Shredder classics figure...
BUT, more importantly, I'd like the Classics line to continue with a Neca-like comic-inspired line like was rumored to happen, with different styles for the different artists versions (ie: Laird, Eastman, Lawson, ect)...

Are you under the impression that NECA doesn't exist? Or that The poor sales on April folded their company?
That's hysterical.

I thought the NECA April was a San Diego Comic Con exclusive just like The Mousers ?
I know NECA is still running because they are currently releasing Robocop figures (to pump everyone up for the 2013 remake), Terminator, Evil Dead 2, Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street figures, and are continuing there Gremlins, E.T. and video game based figures line.
But they did have cut backs to their figures as not including bases, a lot of accessories and also condensing the size of the clam shell the figures are released in.
I would like Ninjara to be released eventually. She never got an original figure, and she's a favorite of mine.

I heard that it's been rumored that they would also take on other renditions of the turtles, which ultimately got me started in this line in the first place. Design wise, the 2k series has been my favorite so far. How are the rights to that handled? Would it even be possible from a legal standpoint?
I'd also like the current turtles handled in this respect as well. The closest thing I see to it are the "Power sound" turtles. With more articulation and less gimmicky sounds I can see myself purchasing those.

I LOVE this series but these guys have been a pain to find. I ended up with Leo, Don and Raph and all with correctly painted eyes! However, my favorite turtle, Mikey... I cannot find anywhere. My nearest TRU is an hour away, same with Target, and no other stores have stocked them. Also, we have no comic shops here. :'(

These have been in stock at Amazon.com and ToysRUs.com for several days now. Walmart had them for a few days too but they appear gone as of today. I believe Mikey is $17.99.com on Amazon.com and $19.99 on ToysRUs.com. You risk getting funky eyes, but at least you'll have the complete set.
