From IDW Publishing forums (http://forum.idwpublishing.com/viewtopic.php?p=313854#313854):
We'll likely do a fill in issue at #21, with Kevin on art, but I may be speaking early on that front too. That's what we're shooting for.
Personally, I think this is great news. I know it's good to give newer artists a chance, but it's Kevin Eastman!

Thoughts?

Sounds cool. Between all the covers, Ultimate collections, the annual, and #21 I hope Eastman doesn't get burned out. They're really having him do a lot.

Well, it seems like he's having fun. I'm sure when it's not anymore, he can just walk away.

Yes. That is definitely a concern. Keeping him busy as well as happy will be a tricky balance.

Kevin is probably relieved to be treated with respect again. He probably butted heads a lot with Peter. Other than Vol. 4 probably never getting finished, I'm kind of glad that Laird sold the turtles.

Considering Viacom saved the property with the new show and comics, I think everyone is happy PL sold the Turtles.

Kevin involved on another TMNT #21... considering Mirage Vol. 1 TMNT #21 is my favorite comic book, period, the significance of him doing that particular number wouldn't be lost on me.

I just hope -- if it happens -- he's given the right kind of material to really shine.

Well issue #18 has the Turtles trapped in Dimension X with Fugitoid in a space arc,and I imagine it'll go on for a few issues.

They might still be in space in issue #21. Would seem odd to see Eastman chosen for a sci-fi adventure rather than some down to earth Foot Soldier story.

The Krang War is 17-20 (4 issues like most arcs have been). Bobby also said yesterday that Secret History takes place between 20 and 21 (but this is subject to change) so they should be back on earth by 21.

i'm always down for more of kevin's art. though, i do hope that IDW doesnt burn him out.
keep him involved - yes
keep him gainfully employed - yes

he does a cover for every issue (which i love by the way), but that seems like it could be taxing over a long period. honestly, i'd rather have him do only a few variant covers and spend the other work time drawing stand alone stories that consist of only of his art.

point is, i dont want him getting burned out again. he seems to bring a lot of energy, energy that the series needs and i'd like to see that go the long haul. if a candle burns brightly than there is no need to burn it at both ends.

oh and a quadripple ****ing yahoos to an all kevin issue!!!booyakashaaa!

I wanted to remind you guys:it was peter who got burned out, kevin sold his share of the turtles a long time agon and didn't work on any turtles comic project since bodycount.I never heard or read him say anything about having been burned out.
and another thing to keep in mind about this brain project here;) is:peter didn't get burned out from drawing and writing his comic book series for 29 years, he and kevin for many years was leading their co-created baby on a WORLD WIDE LEVEL and with never before seen succes at that over the majority of that time.I think even after reading the very insightfull interview with kevin eastman in the comics journal from a few years back NONE of us can ever imagine just what a HUGE(H U G E) amount of work this is...and this is just destined to cause stress problems on your health after time...
if tmnt had just remained a great wonderful comic book for all this time then they would have certainly had written and drawn more issues by now and probably(if sales were allright) would still continue to do that with the greatest of joys...t get back on topic here:I don't see doing a lot of ART WORK bring kevin in a burned out state now;)...

I am sure Kevin could have done some Tales of the TMNT issues if he wanted to. He simply abandoned the TMNT franchise after the failure of both Next Mutation and his Bodycount mini-series in 1997/1998.

And if I recall correctly, it was IDW who came to Kevin first.

I think Marcelangelo's got it right. I'm sure things are vastly different now that Kevin doesn't have to draw/write turtles while managing the overwhelming business aspect. He still probably has to compromise a bit since he isn't the owner of the turtles, but perhaps Waltz and Curnow are easier for him to work with personality-wise than Mr. Laird.

lol, the failure of Bodycount? Bodycount's sales -- which were strong (it's even been reprinted at least a couple times now), and he had a great time working on it -- have absolutely, positively nothing to do in any way, shape or form with Kevin walking away from the Turtles.

Yeah I'm gonna have to disagree with you there, I think Bodycount remains to be pretty popular today and is still pretty sought after by fans on the secondary market. Next Mutation's failure maybe, but I certainly wouldn't lump Bodycount in there with that.

With Laird still in charge? Hard to believe he simply didn't want to because he was tired of the Turtles. Peter Laird has always said that he would be (or would have been) open to a new collaboration but we don't know how Kevin is feeling about that.

As it's been discussed before, there's always the possibility we'll get a final Eastman and Laird collaboration some point down the road, though it might not be for a while. They'd really need to mend the fences first.

(W) Tom Waltz, Kevin Eastman (A/CA) Kevin Eastman
In this special issue drawn by TMNT co-creator Kevin Eastman, the Turtles have struggled to survive against unstoppable enemies and impossible odds. The time has come for the next stage of their training to begin. The lesson turns deadly, though, when a mysterious new opponent arrives and teaches the Turtles they have MUCH left to learn!

MikeandRaph87

Mysterious new opponent?

Lets take a look at who we have: Shredder,Karai,Krang,Baxter Stockman, Tragg and the rock soliders,Old Hob, and Slash. We are not sure where the Savante ninjas alligence lie whether its good, evil, or nuetral. They seem to be back in the city so interdimensional threats like Malinga or Beserko or whoever are out as are the Triceraton Republic and The Federation rivals. I doubt Bebop and Rocksteady will be mutated then. So it could be one of the two fellow experiments that we have yet to see. If not that Rat King is possible. What do you all think?

CyberCubed

Probably Hun.

thelouisguy
01-18-2013, 09:30 AM
This issue is supposed to be the prelude to a 7 issue story arc, so we can assume that the 7 issue arc will be about the interaction between the Turtles and this mysterious new opponent.

That being said, it is probably Hun who is coming back, as confirmed by Tristan Jones (http://www.crossovercomics.ca/frontpage/interview-with-tristan-jones-writer-of-tmnt-infestation-and-the-gang-wars/#hun). I hope this arc becomes IDW's version of the Gang Wars and even if I am happy that we will be getting back to Earth and NYC, part of me wishes it was Tristan penning these issues. But I have complete confidence in Tom and Kevin, it's just a nostalgia thing.

MikeandRaph87

I never liked Hun. Not hate or anything just boring. He was just a punk who got lucky nothing more. Not interesting like Bebop and Rocksteady were even if all the characters were a bit flat. My guess was the extensive arc was the City At War bit myself, but was not sure of who the participants would be. I had not read that Hun had been confirmed. It was just speculation of myself and others that he is Angel's father and would show up. I know Bebop, Rocksteady(both mutated in full) and Agent John Bishop are set to appear. Though its just the "when". I wonder how the factions will look. Oh, and thanks for the link,I must have missed that article.

thelouisguy

It was more that Tristan let it slip that Hun was showing up, than that it was confirmed.

A City at War senario is probably the most likely for this arc, but does that mean we will see the fall of the Shredder? I would like to see the Foot, go up against the Purple Dragons, go up against the Savates, go up against the Turtles. Hun would lead the Purple Dragons. Where would you place Agent Bishop? Would Krang have a steak in this war? He has been busy himself with the Neutrino.

I just really prefer the dark, NYC underbelly stories. Could be fun to get back to the Purple Dragons vs the Foot.

Oh, I see. I lean Other Media. Not crazy over the darker stuff. I like the porridge just right. Denny O'Neil meeting Adam West and Frank Miller in the middle if you know what I mean with the Batman comparison.

If what you say is true then we could have Hun and street gang(s), Foot Clan led by Karai with perhaps Bebop and Rocksteady mutated to help give the Foot an edge, and the Savanti ninjas. Then there is always a chance of the mob. This time around I will doubt it because of so much other stuff going on. I always saw a potential for a serious take on Big Louie as a consolidated mob boss, God Father type character. There is more likely than the mob a part for Old Hob to play. He and Slash are out there perhaps forming an evil mutant gang or could just tear a bunch of them up acting as a wild card.

Typically this scenario would rise because the one supposedly keeping the underworld in check is The Shredder. However, at this point is active not dead or out of the picture. However, Scret History of The Foot Clan which would have his second encounter with the TMNT in this universe might take him out of the picture for the time being allowing the situation to immediately follow. Though if Shredder is indeed out then how would the Leo offer to join te dark side work?

thelouisguy
01-18-2013, 11:14 AM
Foot Clan led by Karai with perhaps Bebop and Rocksteady mutated to help give the Foot an edge.

You know what? With Shredder preoccupied with Leo being his second in command, could you see Karai splintering off to form her own Foot faction (maybe with a tougher, mutated Bebop and Rocksteady by her side?)? It seems like Alopex is taking Karai's place and with all the Leo talk, I could see Karai leaving just to spite him.

Wow. I'm really excited for this one. I had totally expected #21 to be a "breather" issue since it would following Krang War and Secret of the Foot.

This mystery villain is intriguing. Not sure I can formulate a guess right now, but I'd bet on it being a mutant from Old Hob's little club.

Hey guys, just to clarify, the Hun thing isn't something that was confirmed. I'd heard Hun talk of Hun coming back, but that wasn't from inside IDW. I honestly haven't had anything to do with the TMNT crew since Infestation wrapped up. Someone had asked me how I felt about him coming back, and because I was so far on my reading I wasn't aware of really anything beyond the books I was working on. So, the interview isn't representative of anything in the TMNT camp at IDW. Tom and I are working on a book together outside of turtkes and ghostbusters, and neither of us have mentioned anything outside of the book we're working on together in months. Still, I think it would be cool seeing him back!

Any chance we could get a peek at what you and Dan were cooking up in 2008/2009? I appreciate using elements of the other media, which I always perfered. How was Bishop in these plans and any '87 cartoon originated character involved? Inquiring minds MUST know! Though if its top secret or saved for an extra such as an IDW interview with you in place of a letter page in an issue which explains such and a comparison to IDW's plans or up to what is printed at that point? Sorry,I had to ask. :tgrin:

Sorry Tristan, I guess I misinterpreted your response. (Still sounds like back peddling to me :twink: )

So, as cool as Hun would be, it's either Hun or Old Hob's group of mutants, right? It's going to be a great arc either way.

I can't see it being Hun. That would just be too out of the blue. Plus Hun shouldn't be strong enough to wreck all 4 turtles. Looking at the cover, someone found them at the church, and Tom hinted that Hob has his own turtle tracker, so I'm thinking it's them.

So who is with him? Old Hob, Slash, who else... Cudley the Cowlick (http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=42048)?

Looking at the cover, someone found them at the church, and Tom hinted that Hob has his own turtle tracker, so I'm thinking it's them.

Plus, Slash has already been there...

My inital guess was one of the two other yet to be revealed mutant experiments. Leatherhead I have a feeling is one of those two we have yet to see. He is best as a villain and the line in the April micro suggest the other experiments would be villains as April said the TMNT would stand against him. He could do the damage to the church. I am not sure how it would fit into a City At War type mega arc though.

Looking at Eastman's cover again, I really hope it's a wraparound. That'd be gnarly.

Good lord, I ****ing want that Kevin Eastman cover as a poster on my wall! That's the best piece of cover art I've seen him render at IDW. Intense!

:tgrin:

I'll save it for a blog post or something like that, but the main changes I'd put down in 2008 were that Donny and Leo and Splinter were essentially anti-human, being raised by Splinter who has a hatred for humans based on his history. Mike and Raph were raised by Casey (like IDW funnily enough), and there'd be a distinct difference in survival skills and fighting styles, so each group of Turtles had a lot to learn about each other when they eventually reformed. The plan was for Nagi to be the Shredder and that it was a legacy thing. Dimension X existed, Rocksteady and Bebop were from there but looked VERY different. Bishop was an ambiguous recurring character, the Utroms were badguys, Fugitoid was a key character to it all (very different to the IDW ones) and was a military thing (not necessarily alien, but linked to the alien conspiracy); April still worked for Baxter, who wasn't a bad guy, and a bunch more. Oh, and Hun was a big piece of it all and essentially like the one I was writing for Mirage proper, with some key differences based on the Gang Wars story I never got to finish. Cobra as well.

Thank you, thank you for the response kind sir. I have Peter's blogspot saved on my Blogspot account. What is yours so I can save a link to it? :)

I like everything you said except the Mike and Raph being raised by Casey. Though I do see what you are going for. Now, if Casey was in place of our bumbling friend Chet Allen that would be cool!

Cobra,I can't quite place him in my mind, but he was one of those character created in the latter half of Tales vol.2, a mob boss maybe, and one of your own creations. How many fans can add their own creations to thier favorite franchise? A dream come true, sir!

I do similarities in Nick not JUST IDW specifically The Kraang, bascially renamed utroms who are evil like the character who was derived from the alien race.

Tom and I are working on a book together outside of turtkes and ghostbusters, and neither of us have mentioned anything outside of the book we're working on together in months. Still, I think it would be cool seeing him back!

Anyone who wants the subscription exclusive cover and doesn't have a LCS (or doesn't trust theirs to actually get it), you can pre-order it for cheaper than cover price at Midtown: http://www.midtowncomics.com/store/dp.asp?PRID=TEENAGE+MUTANT+NINJA+TURT_1252293

That's obviously not the Kevin art, just the RI cover filling in. I'd say grab it if you can, it'll probably be a tad pricey on the after-market.

Echoing the sentiments of the rest of the Thread... Kevin's Cover art look amazing.

The one thing that confuses me is how the whole Subscription only cover will work. Can I assume that since I am on a pull list at a Local Comic Shop I will be getting this Subscription Cover or will something else need to be done?

Just tell your guy at the shop you want it. I recently asked mine for the Ghostbusters sub exclusive cover and he acted like it was pretty common in industry.
