View Full Version : Official Episode Discussion: #6 "Metalhead"

Greetings, everyone!
Okay, we've got another episode coming up, this time a little more Donnie-centric...
V66_cZj_r7k
Ah, another cross universe 'truth'... Donnie, the ninja with a 'stick'. He's lost more bo in every incarnation of the TMNT than any of the other turtles combined. Wooden bo don't exactly fare well against advanced laser weapons... I guess when you can use shower dowels from the local Home Depot for replacements, you don't have to worry about a budget.
In true gearhead fashion, he's used his ingenuity to create something to make his situation a little easier on the battlefield: A metallic ninja robot turtle, armed to the teeth with every kind of weapon or cannon imaginable. So while his brothers are getting tossed around like rag dolls by the Kraang, he can sit back in the safety of the shadows and play video games. A 'hands off' approach, if you will..
Well, as with any Donnie project, awry something must go... circuits short, targets lock onto brothers, lairs get half demolished. Robotic mercenaries go on a rampage...
How do you stop a reverse engineered robot that's hellbent on destruction? They'd better hope that robot doesn't start developing it's own artificial intelligence...
So,
Will Donatello's invention be the next great weapon in the turtle arsenal?
Or will it simply be another project doomed to failure?
And how could this fit into the major storyline involving the Kraang??
Stay Tuned!!!

Let's find out which member of the creative staff the idiots run off this week!
Maybe something about Fred Wolf eating the script, vomiting it out and making the writer eat that.

Metalhead is shorter than the turtles.Just over three feet tall probably. I thought he would be a little taller in fact! How tall was he in comparison in his two '87 cartoon appearances?
Reverse enginered from a Kraang bot? That would explain how a Kraang alien could control it.

So far a pretty good episode, Metalhead looks to be pretty beefed up with tech, its too bad he's only half the size of the turtles, woulda liked to see him tower over the turtles. I dig that his shell is a NYC manhole cover.

If I remember right FW Metalhead was quite a bit taller than the FW Turtles, but hey, technology gets smaller, right?

Good point with the sizw of tech!
I guess this is a good excuse to watch The Making Of Metalhead to check! Your probably right though. I was thinking Metalhead was between 5'6-6'0. Maybe he gave some fo his height to the towering Tragg would already 7'0.
I like how it was reversed. Don rewired Metalhead after Krang created him,but this time Don created him and one of The Kraang rewired Metalhead so to speak.

This was a very good episode! Not only did we get to see more of April, but Metalhead was pretty epic! My favorite line was this:
Don: "Hey Kraang! The one that's called your mother wears combat boots!"
Man I love Donnie in this new series!
pannoni1

Donatello: "Booyakasha!"
Michelangelo: "He sounds so dumb when he says that."
Raphael: "You do, too!"
There was some nice action against the Kraang, and I find it funny when the disembodied brains pop out of the bodies like they're so desperate. We did get a warning about more mutants, and enjoyed the manner with regards to if its a good or bad thing, though that means the Dogpound/Fishface mutations look to be coming soon.
April finally shows what's she made out of by taking down a couple Kraang aliens. I wish they could show some of her normal life such as high school though.
A good episode, and I noticed that Leonardo and Raphael were playing a '70s-style hockey game in the lair. Given that in the OT episode where the action may not have been as great Metalhead was programmed to say more voices plus that episode involved Shredder (albeit alternate voiced). But this time the Turtles weren't sick with Chickenpox, so we get to see them fight Metalhead at full strength. I'd rank this episode ahead of Turtle Temper and His Name is Baxter Stockman and just below Rise of the Turtles and New Friend, Old Enemy.
Overall: 8/10

This is now my favorite episode so far, it was really great!
First of all, I loved that thy actually treated April like a character in this episode, I really like the new April a lot, it was awesome to see that she was brave enough to go out on her own and even gave a Kraang droid a beat down. It's also good to see that they are still looking for here father. Now about Metalhead, I think he is really awesome, but I'm confused, did the turtles keep him or did he just get destroyed? I hope they kept him because I would LOVE to see him in future episodes. Donnie was really funny in this episode too, I love him and April's little "relationship" XD. I'm also glad Mikey wasn't the center of attention this time, as the other turtles were funny in this episode. All in all, I really liked this episode, way better than the other ones, except maybe the premiere. Next saturday can't come fast enough!

I thought this was a pretty good episode. A great one to show some character development for Donatello to say the least.
At first I thought the fact that Metalhead being shorter than the TMNT was awkward, but then I was kind of like "...does anyone else find that a bit precious?" Silly of me, I know.

The seen with the Kraang chasing the turtles atop Metalhead did not happen, right? So I would suspect he will be back by season's end. The only compliant I have about Metalhead is his height or rather lack thereof.
You just brought up what I though the '87 cartoon should have done. He would have been great for sparring and could have been pjt to use that way!Perhaps he will be this time around!

Finally an episode that focused on the least developed character of the new show... April. Alright so it wasn't a whole lot, but we did get to hear that she is still concerned regarding her father and that she is willing to do whatever it takes to get things done. While a lot of people have griped that she didn't get the proper introduction to the Turtles, Splinter, and the Lair I think that the character we were shown this week sort of makes up for it. I now find it very easy to believe that she has been out there doing things to find her Father and that is why we havent' seen that much of her.
Regarding the other character who finally got some character development. It was great to finally get to see some hot Donatello action. So far I am a fan of him being able to manipulate existing technology and not just produce this amazingly fantastic devices. It is believable that he could retrofit the tech in a Kranng droid for his own means and that helps the show stay that much more grounded in reality. I did not like Donatello hating on his Bo Staff seemed weird for the character considering it seems like the Turtles did pick their weapons in this iteration. Had there been more jeering from his brothers to make him feel inferior beforehand it would have gone a long way to explaining why he was hating on his weapon. However, when he is bemoaning it on his own without any sort of motivation it seems just out of character for a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle, not to mention the fact that we have already seen it transform into a Naginata which would make it more effective. Speaking of out of character the jumping to the conclusion that Splinter would continually deny him his requests got old really fast (especially when you consider it happened only twice). I feel like Donatello with his intelligence would be more astute in his observations and not have missed his Sensei saying yes to his requests. It just felt more like a Raphael move than a Donnie one.
Regarding Metalhead, he's cute a the Dickens. I love that they made him so small and yet so loud. I had never considered how loud a giant robot turtle would be, but it makes total sense. It was a nice touch and I'm glad that it was included. Also I may be grasping for straws here but when Metalhead grabbed Raph and slammed him against the ground multiple times I couldn't help but think of Turtles in Time, where you could do it to the foot soldiers. I was half hoping that when the Kraang took over Metalhead he said something along the line of "I'm gonna mangle you green slimeballs."
Finally it was great to learn a little bit more about the Kraang and the Mutagen, excuse me "unstable mutagen," opes up some cool directions for the story to go. Also loved having more Space Heroes, one that Leo apparently hadn't seen yet, and the perfect display of Michelangelo's character in him seeing a city full of mutants as a way to make new friends. Line of the episode had to "The one that is called your mother wears the boots that are made for combat!" Classic

I liked the episode today and was excited to see metalhead. I was, as others were, disappointed with the size of metalhead. Other than that, it was great seeing him. It would seem as if he isn't going to be coming back though? He was almost there to teach Donnie a lesson. I like how Nick is going about this show though. It's like they are pretty open to all characters from mirage, old 80's and new characters. If they seem to think people will want him back, I bet they do. Maybe when they encounter the shredder at some point? In addition to using a bunch of enemies, old and new, that could really allow the series to have a long run because it wouldn't get stale.
Speaking of shredder, I like how they aren't rushing him into the series. It was nice seeing glimpses of him and having Chris and the foot do some of his work thus far. I wonder if they will have their first real encounter with him to end season 1? I'm excited to see the purple dragons too. So many great things in store for this series! I love it! :)

Pretty good ep. Loved that Don decided to build something cuz he was tired of his bo staff's from breaking. And Splinter's first thought when Don asked for an upgrade to his bo "Hmm.. a 7 foot staff then?" *lol* Does he make Don's staffs out of that tree that grows in their lair???

You weren't alone, that moment when he body slammed him was the highlight for me. Definitely an homage to the arcade games.
I wonder what other easter eggs or throwbacks to previous iterations I've been missing in this new series so far...

I guess I'll have to accept that this is one of those "turn off your brain" shows if I want to enjoy it: watching the turtles utterly ignore the big, obvious glaring weak point in the Kraang-controlled Metalhead--just aim at the utterly unprotected alien at the top, you guys!--was painful. Still, we finally got some much-needed development for April, and the show continues to be enjoyable, so I'm still watching.
Random thoughts:
I don't remember: had we already seen Don's naginata in the actual episodes?
I'm not sure how I feel about having plot points like the Kraang's attempts to contaminate the water supply resolve themselves off-screen. It suggests that the writers don't expect us to take the Kraang seriously, which I don't think is a terribly good idea when they're supposed to be one of the main villain groups.
Speaking of, Mikey just got serious competition for the title of stupidest character in the series, because the Kraang's plan to perfect the mutagen by contaminating the water supply is capital-D dumb, and a big sign that the writers either don't care about science, or don't expect their viewers to. What's more, just how are they supposed to study those thousands upon thousands of new test subjects? After all, it's not like they've ever succeeded in containing any of the mutants we've seen so far, so why should they expect to be able to do so now?
I am so over Donny's crush on April, and am totally ready to have someone--anyone--call Donny out on just how creepy he's being.
Another thing I'm ready for: actual progress on the Kraang/April's dad story. Sure, we got a reminder that it exists here, and hints to what their greater plan is, but once the actual fights begin, the turtles seem to forget that they're trying to get information about Kirby. Even a token attempt at capturing or trying to extract information from one would help.
Metalhead is cute. I particularly like the manhole cover "shell".

Don't you remember what it was like the first time you really liked someone? That's how a lot of shy, awkward geeky guys act when they have a crush on a pretty girl. He reminds me a lot of Leonard and Raj on The Big Bang Theory. Hopefully the writers will have Donatello become a little more confident as the series progresses and he'll be more of a gentleman towards April.

Awesome episode. I really liked the lesson it imparted that Don's bo isn't entirely useless. I also liked Metalhead and hope that he'll come back. It was great seeing April get more screen time and actually act like a headstrong character. I hope we get more moments like that from her. I also loved seeing Space Heroes and Leo's look when he's watching it. I know that look all too well because I sometimes have it when I watch a show I like. I liked Splinter reassuring Don at the end that he saved everyone after all and how the missile powered staff malfunctioned.
Fave quotes:
Leo: Let's keep moving. Failure is not an option.
Don: Actually, failure is always an option.
Raph: There's another option. Me slapping you.
Leo: Stand your ground *sees the Kraang about to fire* On second thought, run!
Don: Booyakasha!
Mikey: It sounds weird when you say it.
Raph: It sounds weird when YOU say it.
Overall, a great ep. Can't wait for next week.

Another good one. I'm glad this episode got back to April's search for her father. One thing that bothered me was that I didn't understand why they didn't just attack the kraang on top of Metalhead. Well, ok, Leo had a bladed weapon, but I don't think hitting it a few times would've been too much for censors.
Either way, I look forward to what done comes up with for his new bo staff... launcher.... thing. Sure it'll be awesome
[EDIT]: I also finally looked up the "Your mother wears army boots." line just to see why that's offensive. You learn something new everyday.

It feels like this episode was supposed to come before "I Think His Name Is Baxter Stockman". Donnie was complaining about his weapon, but in the Baxter episode, a blade popped out of his weapon. That also makes me wonder, when are they going to show more of his Naginata or whatever it's called (Bo staff with blade).

Its quite possible the episodes are being aired out of order. This happens often with action cartoons.

Blah, I was so excited for this episode all week, and I can't help but feel totally let down.My sister and I rewatched the older episodes before this, and I gotta say I wish that Don had acted more like he did in the premier than how he was portrayed here. I liked premier Don because he was struck me as more of a wiseass, at least in regards to Raph's poking fun of him and how he took the initiative to be a bit more daring and reckless when it came to what he felt was right. In this episode, he just sort of took it or "defended" himself in a way that made him look even more like a dork.
Also rubbed me the wrong way how in Turtle Temper, the group was sort of missing Raphael before they even went into battle, yet in this episode, none of them could really care less that Don had replaced himself with Metalhead, other than the fact that Matelhead was loud and in the way. And no one, not even Don, really seemed to realize in the end how he should appreciate his Bo for what it can do...I mean, I was pumped for the end when he was to realize it and his true capabilities and rise to defend his brothers when they needed him, but then the stupid Bo got snapped again! I mean, come on! It was like, they all get home, and oh hey, yeah Don this was your fault and you just proved our point at how useless you are. At least at the end of New Friend, Old Enemy, Mikey got a little pep talk with Raph at how he is appreciated, even though he screwed up royally too. Don just gets a short little whatever snippet with Splinter that doesn't really seem to drive home any sort of point at all.

Overall I really enjoyed this episode!
Has anyone else noticed the change in the dynamic of Raphael and Leo in this series? In Mirage and the 2003 series you would often see Leo make a call about something and Raphael having to question it. In this series I feel more like Raphael just goes with a lot of Leo 's decisions and then turns around to instead question what Don has to say.
It's a change and I like it. You can definitely see there is a very friendly rivalry between Leo and Raphael still but it seems much more like something familial that they both enjoy versus a daily power struggle for dominance. In a way I feel like it has mellowed Leo 's character out a little with a strong second in command he doesn't always feel like he needs to be watching over everyone 24 /7 for fear of them getting into danger. So he has developed his own hobbies.
I love Leo's obsession with Space Heroes more each week. Though I dread the impending episode when he will discover life is really not as black and white as his favorite show is.
I really find Don creeping on April very amusing, but in a way it also makes me a little sad because you know he is going to get his heart broken.
I am still pretty indifferent to April personally at this point and am mystified

I am sorry for the double post but for some reason my Kindle will not allow to finish my last post.
I just wanted to say I am mildly mystified by fandoms obsession with April in this series. She's an enjoyable character but I never recall in 2003 so many people wondering about her and almost looking forward more to her character then the guys.
I am seeing this more on Tumble then here but I think it means kudos for Nick for getting everyone so involved in her character. Even if I don't get it :twink:

I think people weren't bothered about April in the 2K3 series because she showed up quite a bit. In this series, she hasn't shown up that much, and I think a lot of fans are bothered by it. But I hope that this episode makes up for that as it showed April being headstrong and doing what she felt was right despite what Leo said. And I agree with Prefight Doughnuts that April probably would have hit Leo if he hadn't given in to her request. It looked like she was going to.
And, yeah, that Mikey quote was funny. I forgot about that one.

Had she hit Leo for simply being concerned about her welfare it would have made her look like a jerk.
I am glad they didn't do that.

Did anyone think Leo looked a little different when he was talking to April about going to the Kraang? He looked like one of those rubber costumes they used in the movies IMO. It may be that it's just because he was standing next to April so it made him seem bigger.

I agree that Raph and Leo's relationship in this take seems way less aggressive than it usually does, and I'm totally digging their punch-buddy sort of vibe they've got going on. Hell, I'm liking Leo more and more with each episode and that's a first for me!
My only beef is that it feels like Raph has to take his aggression out somewhere else so now it's simply being targeted even more so on Mikey and Don, which bothers me a bit, since even though his fighting with Mikey is no big deal (and some of that tension had already been quashed at the end of the episode with Bradford), I feel like it's causing a stress between him and Don that isn't usually there. I've always liked the dynamic between those two because it felt like they fought the least and had a sort of mutual understanding. This series it seems all they do is argue, which, although refreshing to see Don stand up for himself, sort of fell flat at how easily he seemed to let himself get abused by Raph in this particular episode. Would've preferred if Raph, or hell, any of his brothers, made some sort of acknowledgment that he and his 'useless bo' were actually an important part to the team, which I'd thought was the lesson we were supposed to get out of the whole ordeal (instead of reinforcing the idea that the bo really is a pretty stupid weapon and who would want it anyway).

Why did the turtles acted like total idiots in this episode?
I mean they din't gave a crap about April and acted like total Duche bags, I know Raphael has always been a jerk but this time he was "Extra" annoying.
Ironically Mikey was the one who better behaved. :teek:
Anyway before some guy from the nick crew goes crying home because I criticized he's new show I want to say that I did liked the episode but, I found the way the turtles acted a little weird, like they weren't being themselves.

I really enjoyed this new episode. It was good to see April again, and I love how she's well aware and slightly annoyed by Donnie's feelings towards her. The new Metalhead is the cutest war machine ever, but I was a little disappointed he didn't have his own personality with A.I. or something. I was a little annoyed that when the turtles were fighting Kraang-Metalhead they didn't try to hit the Kraang part, but whatever. I can't wait until the next episode! :tgrin:

I think this is again a moment where the quality of the animation is so great that the surfaces(here the skin) looks just like real objects being lit by the same light as all the other things on screen..
I had this feeling quite a few times in previous episodes as well..for example in the 4th episode when raphael is talking to michelangelo in the alley before the foot attack for the first time...there his skin looks like real costume rubber texture from the first movie in my oppinion and this is a great feeling!
is that what you meant?
Not a bad episode but also not amazing, kinda fun. Donnie didn't sound like Raph for most of the episode to me so that made me pretty happy, I actually liked Rob as Donnie today because of it.
Something I forgot to mention last episode was how the turtles managed to throw a pizza to get rid of a bad guy and it didn't feel cheesy, heck even the OT never really did that besides once or twice and yet it worked here perfectly. I still don't like how they just let the bad guys escape, why not try to capture one of the kraang.
Metalhead was neat and I'd like to see it again in the future somehow. At least he got more closure than OT metalhead who was left open ended only to never be used again besides a quick cameo.
Its quite possible the episodes are being aired out of order. This happens often with action cartoons.
I guess we'll never know though.
When the season is over we can place episodes in a more logical order if there are big inconsistencies. It's not that hard.

I absolutely loved this episode, but with that said the creators have either decided to take their sweet time with all the story arcs or their primary focus is establishing characters that can be made into action figs. For a few eps we've had a "villain of the week" scenario, and this episode only misses that tag by having a new friend rather than foe.
I'm not opposed to new characters, its a kids show and they must make money somewhere, but of the two main story lines (The Kraang/April's Dad, and The Shredder/The Foot), zero progress has been made and this is the 6th episode.
This really only works because the show is so funny, and this total lack of progression is giving us some quality time with the personality development in the turtles themselves.

For perspective, 6 episodes into the 4Kids series we saw these episodes:
Things Change, A Better Mousetrap, Attack of the Mousers, Meet Casey Jones,
Nano, and Darkness on the Edge of Town. That series had 1 major villain/plot and we were getting just as little in the way of story progression, and probably less character progression.
Oddly, the FW series set up the universe in fewer episodes than either of the other series.

This was a good episode in my opinion. I thought Metalhead was awesome, the scene where he runs towards the other turtles while on the rooftops with all the junky and clumsy sounds gave me a very good laugh. Hopefully we'll get to see more of him in the future, preferably a bit upgraded. Not the best episode this far but definitely an enjoyable one.

Hilarious episode was hilarious!
"So, hehe, you like heavy metal? Hehe.. heh.". I swear, replace Donnie with Quagmire and "hehe" with "geggity" and it still works.
I'm sure that was a nod to Family Guy. The delivery of that line and innuendo were not innocent. XD
Second best I give it 9/10
Old friend new enemy is my fav
T'his is second
rise of the turtles part 2 is third
i think his name is baxter stockman is fourth
rise of the turtles part 1 is fifth
turtle temper is last
For me it's:
1. Rise of the Turtles (ep 1 and 2, premiere); 9/10
-. Old friend, New enemy (ep 4); 9
3. Metalhead (ep 6); 8
4. Turtle Temper (ep 3); 7.5
5. ... Baxter Stockman (ep 5); 7
PS: Say what you will, but if you are a teenager or young adult, admit the fact that April's voice is smexy. Yes, I went there..

I liked this episode! I think this is my favourite version of Donatello so far, and he may be my fav Turtle on this show (usually he is my least favourite!) He was pretty badass in this episode, and I just love the voice acting.
Did anyone else think Leonardo was adorable when April totally told him off and he was like, "Okay" and moved out of her way? I really love the expressive facial expressions of these Turtles. Loved Mikey's face too, when he and Leo were both attacking Metalhead near the beginning.
Other than that, the guys really have to start attacking the brain inside the robot body! Seriously duh! And this may be the jerkiest Raph ever. He's such a gaping a-hole!

Nice to see a Don-centered episode. Wonder why they decided to make Metalhead so small? They could have easily made him as big as the turtles (or just a tad shorter) and it would be just as easy to believe.
I wish Metalhead were more than just a remote-controlled robot. He has no mind of his own or anything? That would have been more interesting.
This series needs more multi-part stories like the pilot. 24 mins is very limiting in what kinds of stories they can tell.

I was a bit disappointed Metalhead himself had no actual, "character" like the OT or SNES version of the character.
Here he really did just feel like a remote controlled device and little more. Perhaps in a future episode Don will add a personality chip to Metalhead and he'll become an actual character?
Would be cool.

Indeed, some people tend to forget this is a 26 episode season, not a 13 episode season.
This is Ninja Turtles, people, we get 26 episode seasons and we'll likely get at least 150 episodes out of this show before it ends. We're not DC and Marvel where their shows are canceled quickly.

We probably will see more if a somewhat obscure character like Metalhead was resurrected.
Metalhead only ever got 1 full episode in the OT and a short 10 second cameo in another where Don used him as a vacuume. I think the character is mostly remembered for his role as a boss in Turtles in Time than anything else.
In fact I think there's a good chance all the characters from Turtles in Time will eventually show up....we already know Leatherhead, Rat King and General Traag will.
Next we just need Slash, Rahzar/Tokka, Bebop/Rocksteady and Krang himself.

When Metalhead bashed Mikey back and forth on the ground, it reminded me of when the Turtles did the same thing in old SNES/Genesis games.
I pretty much agree with everyone on this show. It's fun to watch and I laughed out loud a few times this week. This might be my favorite episode so far. However, I found it strange that April went off to face the kraang and not one turtle followed her. Loved Metalhead's design, and I think the fact he was short just made him more badass. The episode had some nice action sequences too.

Just rewatched the episode and remembered I had wanted to mention how amusing I found it that it felt like Leo just spent half the episode face palming, mostly at Don. Gave me a good laugh!
Aside from the already aforementioned plot weak spot, the episode was pretty fun. I'm not overly familiar with Metalhead from the OC, but loved his design. It was also great to finally see April's situation progress a little (I love that Katara is voicing this chick), and Don's awkward nerdy crushing (that poor, poor turtle).
My favourite bit, however, has to be seeing Leonardo tell April off. I don't know why. I think it was good to see him show a bit of backbone.
Still, we have yet to learn more about the Kraang and their motives, it will be interesting to see. Not my favourite episode, but high quality as usual.

I seriously enjoyed this episode - definitely one of my favorites so far. Opening with the action scene was something I wasn't expecting, but it thought it was done really well. Raph's quip about Donatello and the marching band had me rolling.
The rooftop scene with Metalhead and April was hysterical. I do not look forward to the episode where Donnie gets his heart broken! Also enjoyed Splinter's jokes about the bo staff being upgraded.
I am totally in love with this series.

only thing that i was getting frustrated about, and i know that this is a kids show, was that they just couldnt stab the damn kraang on top of metalhead's head. just the fact that that it hasnt occured to them that they need to eliminate this threat before they get away is kind of strange to me.

I guess it was due to censorship because we all know they can't show Leo or Raph slice or stab the Kraang off Metalhead.... but geez, Mikey coulda smacked him with his nunchucks. If it wasn't a kiddy show, they would have either stab the thing or toss a shuriken at it.

Or Donnie could have smacked it with his bo, or one of them could have just pulled it off Metalhead's head.
I prefer when Leonardo and Raphael are at loggerheads, mainly because the current way removes the weird "respectful distance" relationship between Donatello and Raphael that I really like.

hi, I wanted to put my view on the episode in, too..;)
well, I have seen it thrice so far...and I like it very much..I can enjoy thi show without boiling my head over tiny things that I may feel don't work so good at times..but to be honest so far I haven't even gotten anything yet that I would think should be changed..this is a pretty awesome ride every week!
so, metalhead was exciting..loved the fact that he/it was so small compared to the dudes;)..also there were some hillarious phrases in this episode, I am thinking of donatellos mama-kraang joke!hahaha..or raphaels comment in the beginning about the possibility of losing;)...thought it was a nice touch to see him feeding spike with a fresh leave in the sewers.the rooftop cene with metalheaad/donatello and april?great timing, so very funny!;)bravo!
I like the way splinter threw that bo to donnie when he was going for the rescue..I see your point with the guys just easily ditching the kraang off of metalheads head but to me in rewatching it actually looked like-yeah...it did kinda look like if leo and mike and later donnie did punch the thing a bit..but it wouldn't come off...
one thing that made me curious a little was in fact how the turtles got to fight with the kraang on their turf even in the very beginning of the episode..I have the oppinion that in fiction you don't always have to explain everything and it is for the good to let the viewer him/herself do fill in the gaps sometimes..but I just thought about why they were even there fighting them in the first place?or did I miss the reasoning somewhere?did they mention that?
I gotta say I LOVE when the guys flip like a little ball with their heads pulled into their shell..it makes for some fun action in my book;)...
really great show, cant wait for next weeks episode!

Metalhead is shorter than the turtles.Just over three feet tall probably. I thought he would be a little taller in fact! How tall was he in comparison in his two '87 cartoon appearances?
Yeah I kept thinking that too. How is a metal turtle so threatening if he's shorter than the TMNT? I did find it interesting tho that it was actually Donnie who created/programmed him from the beginning, verses the FW series where the TMNT caught Metalhead and THEN Donnie reprogrammed him.

I really enjoyed this episode. That being said I did think there were a few minor things wrong with it; First off, I think maybe this episode should have aired before the Stockman episode. Donnie clearly has a blade concealed inside of that staff that he used last week which never appeared this week. It could have been maybe like a silent upgrade to his weapon between episodes, since when this one ended he was still working on it.
Secondly, even though I liked the fact that April finally did attempt to get some clues about her father, I felt that even after mouthing off to Leo, he should have either gone with her or stopped her entirely. These guys know the Kraang are dangerous and for the leader of their team to just.. let her go without any kind of help or supervision just seemed irresponsible. :tlol: I realize that these versions of the turtles are younger and still have a lot to learn, but still.
But overall, still an enjoyable episode.

You're not the first person I've seen to comment on that. It is interesting, isn't it? Maybe it could be a character growing point in a future episode; where Raph and Don come to respect each other's rather dramatic differences. That's something I'd like to see, anyway.

You hit the nail on the head for me too. While I adore this new Leo ten times more than I've ever liked him, I rather detest at how its coming at the cost from the unique relationship I always felt like Don and Raph had. It makes sense when Raph and Leo bicker a bit more than the others, so feeling like Raph is channeling all that frustration toward Don is annoying, especially since Don seems to be doing a pretty lame job at defending himself in return as time goes on.

Aside from the problem I have of the height it was a creative reimagining of the character. Don controlling him from the lair and all. It would be nice if he could be put on autopilot and Don can join them to fight alongsdie Metalhead. Still ,well done!

I am actually enjoying see Raph and Don bicker the same way I am personally enjoying much the same thing between Leo and Don in the IDW comics.
It's fun getting to see Don be snarky and forward, I really love when he gets one over on Raphael and you just see Leo at the side grinning mischievously.
Maybe it's just me, it's nice to mix up the dynamics.
Though having always been a Leo fan I am not certain if I should feel pleased or offended when people claim that thanks to this show they finally like his character?? :trazz:

I understand not stabbing or slicing something with flesh, but I know just about every cartoon has violence and they hit flesh with non sharp objects a lot.

Metalhead was cute and all but I'll have to say out of the bunch this is my least favorite episode.
I think it's like CyberCubed said about him not having his own personality that was sort of a bummer for me.
I've pretty much enjoyed everything so far in this series especially the humor but I need to rant for a moment.
START RANT
I'm also now glad we didn't get much April until now and hope we get even less.
I think she may be my least favorite April out of all of them.
Her design seriously needs some work and her hair needs to be less shiny.
Her attitude stinks from what we've seen of her even if it's not been much, but if this is who the new April is I hope they rescue her father quickly and we don't see her again.
The Don thing with her is creepy and she just comes off as a total b1tch.
END RANT
On another note I'd like to say I crave pizza once more because of this show lol
:trazz:
It's not that I didn't like Leo before, I've just often felt like he was too perfect. He's the leader, he gets to have swords (not saying they're the coolest weapon, but he gets to sword fight other ninjas), he's the most calm and collected, and sometimes the best fighter. It's just not interesting. In this series, we get to see him develop, we get to see him learn and grow. That's interesting.

Best episode for me. I loved how it was Donnie-centric, obviously - great character development.
It was also (in my opinion) one of the funniest episodes, the array of quotes we're all laughing about is testament to that. I especially liked when Donnie kept staring at April via Metalhead. Haha, truly entertaining!
Loving this series so much.
I really enjoyed this episode. Made me laugh and had tons of great action. Gotta say I love some of the detail, like at one point when Don was talking you could faintly hear a subway in the background and stuff like that.
Is there a way to see the preview for next week?

What I am hoping is that when Don fixes Metalhead, he installs him with a personality chip to make him his own character. Would be a good way for him to get a second ep.

Well, maybe they have the next preview on the Nick website. I'm disappointed that they don't show the preview for next week's ep after the current ep though. I really like seeing that beforehand so I have a handle on what the ep will be about.

I think the Raph and Don friction came from the 2007 film, as they certainly never gave that vibe in 2K3.
I'm still coming to terms with Rob Paulsen being snarky and aggressive to a character he used to voice. XD

It would be great if Donnie gave metalhead his own personality (and maybe made him a little taller too). I too was annoyed that the turtles failed to spot the obvious weakness of the krang controlled metalhead. Even if they did not want to show one of the turtles slashing or stabbing the fleshy utrom they could have kicked, punched, headbutted him or even sandwiched him between their shells or something. Also the butt end of a sai is designed to be a blunt but functional component of the weapon so Raph could have just as easily hit him with the butt of one of his sais as Mikey could have hit him with one of his nunchucks.

I read some of the comments about the whole "why didn't they attack the brain" fridge logic. I watched it again in full attention, and it seemed it was Don's bo impaled in Metalhead's chest was the one that defeated it, not the metal that dropped on the kraang.
It's interesting.

I've been kind of out of it on discussion for the new episodes lately, since I've been having to see them a few days after the premiere lately (for example, just saw this one yesterday), but I had to pop back in after this one.
I hate to say it but...I think Donnie might be my favorite in this incarnation of the show. I was all geared up for it to be Mikey, and I do like Mikey, but Donnie keeps stealing the scenes with some of the best dialogue, delivery (then again, it IS Rob Paulsen), and I'm actually really liking the gags about Donnie's crush on April.
Can't lie, even though I knew it wouldn't with the age range it's aimed at, when Donnie had Metalhead's sight zoom in on her...I had a brief moment where I thought it was going to zoom in on her chest. Donnie...no...stop it Donnie. :P

Ha, I thought that too for a minute there. It definitely looked like his camera was headed that way but maybe he thought better of it and decided to zoom on her face instead.

I could see that. They definitely had a bit more of a snippy attitude toward one another, but I also sort of attribute that to the fact that Leo was gone and everyone's nerves were running on overdrive. Once Leo returned Raph was able to channel his frustration back on him as he usually does and he basically left Don alone and vice versa. I just feel they naturally don't argue that much and it takes something drastic like Leo abandoning them for them to really be at one another's throats.

There seems to be some of that tone to the IDW series as well, where Don is a little too intelligent for his own good and has to remind the other 3 of that all the time. You see a lot of backlash come from all 3 of the turtles towards Donnie because of that, even Leo. I for one welcome that change, in the past there's always been that friction between Raph & Leo that at times has pulled the team apart, I think that angle can be overused, and Raph is always going to be quick to anger, thats part of his personality, so its nice to see him target that somewhere else at times, in this case Donnie, instead of just Leo.

Well, I like it. Leo was mellowed down in this version, likes games to play with his brothers, and Raph outclassed him in combat. It kinda removes the question why Raph would still want to follow Leo's leadership if he's prissy with him all the time (I can forgive the first movie. But the 2k3 and 2k7 film, not so much).
It's been established by now Mikey loves pushing Raph's buttons and enjoys the violence (I really like the fact Mikey complains when Leo or Don hits him). Raph's interaction with Don is really just new territory and I'm looking forward where that direction will go.

I disagree Raph and Leo have always had a bit of friction, and it was shown as far back as the first movie, they would get into shoving matches and Raphael would mimic Leo's goody-two-shoes persona

Yeah, they were always at odds with each other, but they still acted like brothers. However, I like this dynamic for them as well. It's a welcome change that they aren't constantly at each other's throats and have a more playful rivalry, though I didn't think it would be like that after Leo was chosen as leader.

Nope, poor word choice Leo has never been prissy; opinionated, pig-headed and even arrogant. Not nor never prissy.

It is still in my mind something that could change. I am waiting for Leo to face his first real grave challenge as leader. The first time things get bad and he fumbles and it sets bad events into motion. I am curious to see if this does come to pass if his character will start to alter :tsmile:

I wasn't talking about Leo.
I like this episode, not one of my favorites but it was still pretty ok
only thing that i was getting frustrated about, and i know that this is a kids show, was that they just couldnt stab the damn kraang on top of metalhead's head. just the fact that that it hasnt occured to them that they need to eliminate this threat before they get away is kind of strange to me.
I was too frustrated that they didn't just attack the kraang. I can understand why Nick don't want to show living things get killed, but this felt way too stupid to be fun to watch.

Ohh. My favorite episode of OT is when Leo lost his confidence and quit, and each of the other turtles tried taking the leadership role. I'd love to see that in this series.

Maybe I just watch too much sci-fi and so I’m used to coming up with excuses as to why things work, but it doesn’t seem that hard theorize why the Kraang would not be so vulnerable.
Let’s all take a moment to read way too much into things: So, here we have this alien race that “evolved” into a squishy, octopus-out-of-water form that’s only saving grace is that it can apparently “plug-in” to the electronic nervous system of another being. Watching the show closely, you can see that the Kraangs’ body sloshes and slimes around when it’s out of its robotic shell. But once it’s pluged-in, they look rather more like pink rocks. Wouldn’t it make sense (as much sense as any of this can make) that the Kraang have a biological defense mechanism once they’re plugged-in that would protect them from being easily dislodged from their host? Even human organs can become swollen and hard as a rock (though they’re not designed to do that. I’m grossing myself out here); seems to me that an alien body could do the same.
I’m sure you could poke holes in that theory, but it’s mine, I like it, and it helps me to enjoy the show without worrying so much.

Hmm, that does make sense if you think about it, especially with how that host will latch on so quickly.

That's not the problem. Why wouldn't the turtles think to at least try to injure the Kraang? I'm guessing it was a last-minute animation decision to have the Kraang crawl up on top rather than have it remotely take control of Metalhead. It just ended up making the turtles look like dufuses.

Personally I'd call it a mix of both. I had the same thought while watching it of how stupid they were not to just attack the Kraang directly, but within a second's time I rationalized it as 'cartoon logic'. So it is a big hole in the logic, but not enough of one for me to call shenanigans on.

Maybe something about Fred Wolf eating the script, vomiting it out and making the writer eat that.
One of the writer's from the 2012 show was in The Technodrome Forums ? Damn I need to come here more often.

This is a tad late, and I'm sure I'm not the only one with one sole issue with this episode.
Well, that bit about Donatello complaining about fighting alien technology with a stick...
It was funny and true, sure. But it would've been a bit more credible if he hadn't shown off his Naginata-expansion a couple of episodes ago, you know what I mean? :P
At least don't make it sound like bladed weapons have a slight higher advantage when going against alien tech if Donatello so happens to HAVE a bladed weapon extension now... right?
Well, that was my only issue with the episode (and so far, my only issue with the show as a whole :D )
Great episode, and Metalhead rules! It was only hillarious that Metalhead was such a (badass) shortie.

Leo: Let's keep moving. Failure is not an option.
Don: Actually, failure is always an option.
Raph: There's another option. Me slapping you.
Did anyone else think of the Mythbusters (Discovery Channel)? ;) That phrase was popularized by Adam Savage and it seems plausible (no pun intended ^^) that Donnie may be a fan.
