that way the first who comes across it can post the preview of the annual!it s out in two days and there is ZERO about it on the internet, that cant be true, can it?
could someone at least post again the two page glimpse we got on idw forums, please?

Yeah its weird that there hasn't been a preview for the Annual or #15 yet, hopefully we'll get both today from IDW.

I have the regular and the 25 copy RI variant listed as filled but not yet shipped in my DCBService account so it should be coming this week for sure. I can't wait to get them, but it probably won't be until late this week.

It's on Diamond's list for this week so it'll be at your local shop on Wednesday if they ordered it.

It was originally solicited as 48 pages, but upped it 12 pages to 60. Did it get upped 12 MORE pages??
Metropoliskid41

That would be awesome. 72 pages would make the $9 price tag a little better. Dark Horse Presents is usually 80 pages for $8.

Good old, Kevin, there's spelling errors in the editorial. PL said Kevin was notorious for being a bad speller, some things never change. Gotta love Eastman. :D

10-30-2012, 01:34 AM
Hell, every Eastman comic ever has awful spelling and punctuation. I was almost hoping IDW would leave his script untouched to give it that extra Eastman nostalgic touch, but I figured they'd edit all the errors, heh.

Hopefully I'll get both versions (and then worry about the Jetpack releases), my comic store is only ordering in the regular edition but said they will be especially sourcing a 1:25 for me because I'm a regular customer :)

I'm getting really excited for the annual! The typo is unfortunate, especially affecting such a warm-hearted gesture. These things happen.
Some of the artwork looks a little rushed compared to Eastman's more recent covers, but I can't say it doesn't have some of that old magic! I love that splash page with the stooges! And you can definitely sense some Eastmanisms, like how Raph seems rowdier, or the goofy jokes. And you can also see some of Tom's writing too, which makes for an interesting blend, and I can't wait to read all SIXTY pages of it!

I am SUPER angry at this. I was planning on purchasing 15-20 blanks for future sketches. They would have made a TON of money with a reasonably priced full blank cover.

I didn't realise the DFF had risen to that price now... I got a DFF with a sketch on it for $50 shortly after it was released.

i want to get one of these
I was soooo looking forward to this. Then it comes out, and I'm so annoyed - I didn't get it. (Or #15. Don't feel up for a 5th Turtle, even if he is evil.)
The price, really, was a big factor. I get why it's $9 -- Batman Inc Leviathan was in similar format. But I was really looking forward to an actual comic - not a mini-Trade Paperback.
Biggest problem though, that it was done in Black and white. I'm a fan of the Black and white comics - but this really just... jeez - I do not appreciate a $9 price-tag, and not even a colorist is present. I understand it - trying be classic, and all that - but I don't recall it being solicited as being in black and white. Was it? (And Eastman's colored variant covers looked so good)
Just disappointed. I'm sure its good - but it simply wasn't in any format I was expecting.

Well i think this is a book you would regret not getting later, so i would be getting it, if i were you.
If you like B&W, then the price tag being high should not be such a problem imo. ( tho its ofc ok, if it is economic reasons )
But imo, this is a book too good to pass if you are just basing the pass on cosmetic problems, such as being an issue or a thin TPB, or such.
Btw, i have not read it yet...

Economic reasons definitely factored into it. If I had more money, yeah I might have gotten over it. If I ever really want to read it - then whatever TPB of Hardcover it will be printed in is the obvious solution.

I loved it, its a great read, has some nice nods to 2 of the greatest comic story tellers of all time in Frank Miller & Richard Corben. It's a very fun read, and has a lot of re-readability to it. I really dug the multiple flashbacks to tell the story from multiple vantage points. The rising tensions between the Savate & Foot is interesting and I hope we see more of it in the future, we really haven't seen anything on the Savate vs. Foot since that one issue way back (the issue # currently escapes me), what's it been 6 months or so since that scene?

Wow....and $40 for the other 2 Jetpack variants? Unreal. I hope they don't sell any and lose a ton of money. Their variants are so over-priced its ridiculous. If someone was to get all 4 that would run you $280!!
Metropoliskid41

I get that Jetpack has a long storied history with the TMNT franchise and a strong personal relationship with Kevin & Peter, but holy crap those Jetpack Variants are getting ridiculous. I sucked it up and picked up the first few Jetpack Retro variants, but at $20 a piece I thought that was ridiculous when I was also getting the A cover, B cover, RI A and RI B as well. But man it has gotten out of hand when you also have Jetpack variants for the color classics. Its too really too bad, you'd think if they had set these blanks somewhere at $15-20 they would have sold a ton of them, but I really don't see them moving too many of them at $100 a pop except with the wealthiest of fans and scalpers. Heck at $100 for the blank annual with no sketch on it, you might as well pass, pick up a Red Label at $140 shipped, that comes with 3 signatures and an original sketch from Dan Duncan instead.

Anybody else who's read it like the potential for more amped up tensions between the Savate & Foot. I wonder if this is something we may see more of in Secret History of the Foot Clan. Maybe I'm grasping at straws but I don't think it'd be too big of a stretch to maybe have a past history between these two. French imperialists & traders encounter the Foot clan hundreds of years ago, a man studies the way of the foot, brings it back to France, and there is a tribute system back to the Foot set up all the way back then, that would kind of set this tribute of diamonds to the Shredder in tradition and add bigger implications to the Savate failing to complete this lasting tribute tradition.

It was very interesting the way all the converging stories were weaved together. That was a lot of stuff going on at the same time.
The only part that I didn't care for was reading Raph and Casey's detailed explanation of the incident to Angel's dad and company almost immediately after it happened. They could have skipped to another part of the story and then came back there instead of dragging it out. Minor gripe though.
The battle at the end with all those bodies flying around after a briefcase full of valuables reminded me of the climax to "It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World." :tlol:

Agreed. $100 yikes, better off spending the extra $40 to get the Red Label if you don't have one ordered already, and get 3 signatures plus some Duncan Original Art. $100 just for essentially a substrate to get a sketch on is ridiculous. That turns a $100 sketch into a $200 investment. :teek:

I don't blame your anger at all man, and not just because I know how much you've been campaigning for blank covers. On a basic economic level I don't understand how they justify an almost 1200% percent price increase to get this book with a blank cover. If they are intending to have some art already done when purchase that's one thing, but based on what I've seen that $100 is just for a copy of the book, that you then would need to get into the hands of someone to personalize

It was Halloween. :p Probably a lot of partying being done.
Read the issue yesterday morning and loved it. Honestly, that it was B&W didn't even strike me as curious; I always expected an Eastman-drawn comic with genuine DuoShade tones to be B&W.
Some of the art seemed a little rushed, but Eastman made up for that with super awesome splash pages. I hope he draws full issues again soon, not just TMNT but more stuff of his own. Roninbebop is one of my favorite books sitting on my shelf.

I kind of feel you on this. It's not the best issue ever, but I enjoyed it for what it was. Art definitely felt rushed often, but considering how busy Kevin is and how long this book was, I don't blame him, it's just unfortunate.
It actually reminded me a lot of the Unmentionables, only it wasn't quite as much of a faux-caper this time around. But the goofy humor was there as well as, unfortunately, the total lack of focus around the turtles. Not enough turtles was definitely my biggest disappointment, but there were some really cool moments with the Shredder, and there were some moments that made me chuckle out loud, like Raph's constant harping on Casey and his bat.
Overall, it was a solid blast from the past, just unfortunately, not the best part of the past. I know Eastman & Laird have their fair share of goofiness, but I'm hoping to see a more serious Eastman tale sometime in the near future!

I just picked this up today and have to say it was amazing to read an issue both drawn and written by Kevin. I really enjoyed it and thought it was well done. Felt like an old Mirage issue. Found it was cool that it was b&w too. It would have been fun to see Kevin's work colored though other then the cover, but the b&w really gave it that classic TMNT feel.

I don't either, I don't ever plan on reselling any of the great art I've got, but like you said, you could get a hell of a lot better art piece for $200 than for $100 to the artist on a substrate that costs $100.

Here's my review of TMNT Annual 2012 at TMNT Entity. (http://tmntentity.blogspot.com/2012/11/tmnt-annual-2012.html)
I think having Tom Waltz on the script really helped. Eastman LOVES "fly by the seat of your pants" writing, but it doesn't always turn out so hot (Bodycount, Melting Pot). Having someone there to help keep the story focused and on track, but without ditching all the awesome Eastman-isms, really made a difference.
Nice to finally know the deal behind the Savate Ninja after almost a year, even if they're organization is revealed to be an idiotic, comical thing. Still, I can't say it disappoints any real build up, as they were hardly heard from since TMNT #6 and there weren't really any high expectations going for them.
I guess it takes place shortly before TMNT #15, or at least, that's what made sense to me. Either way, it was a nice standalone tale.
I REALLY liked Splinter punishing Casey alongside Raph at the end. It helped drive the point home that Casey's now a member of the Turtle family (as issue #14 stated), and that includes both the perks and the punishments.
Lots of great stuff. Thanks for the early Christmas gift, IDW!

I really really really hate to say it but I agree. So much of it just felt unnecessary, and it hardly had any mainstay TMNT characters in it. It was great in tone, very much so a throwback to the Mirage days, but a wasted opportunity, I think. Give us another one with more actual TMNT content, rather than some random criminals and Irish dudes.

Irish dudes.
That was probably my biggest gripe about the issue. I wanted to read a TMNT annual, instead I'm following two stupid Irish stereotypes? REALLY?
Also turning the Savate into a joke about how they're French pretty much takes any merit they could have possibly had.
Because now I'll always remember them as stupid French stereotypes.

I agree with it being like the Unmentionables; it was a fairly enjoyable story for me. Not perfect, but I liked following the various characters through a series of chance events that nearly lead to a multi-gang fight to the death. Obviously, Kevin was going to be a bit rushed due to the size of this project (the old TMNT days were slower with releases). But even still, I was glad to see him back on writing and art.

I thought this was easily the best issue of the IDW run so far, beating out the Leo issue of the micro-series. Love Eastman's art, and I missed the sprawling grittiness of TMNT that we haven't really seen for a long time.

Overall it wasn't bad at first I wasn't really digging it because of the introduction of all the new characters and how little the turtles were in it at first. The nods to Frank Miller and Richard Corben among other things were neat.
It definitely needed more turtles but had good parts as well as a vibe of The Unmentionables as others have stated. It was quite the project for Kevin to do after not really doing a full issue since the late 80's. Its also cool he did it on duo toned paper hopefully he will also do a more turtle based book at some point but I think this is the type of story Kevin enjoys telling. I'd like to see him do another story even if its a regular issue length more turtle centric but by the end of the book I was pretty happy with the read.

I don't know all too much about Jetpack comics. Does anyone know if there is a chance their variants on this annual will ever come down in price? I'm referring to all 4: the 2 overpriced AND the 2 super-overpriced variants. I'm trying to be a completist with this series, but I can think of plenty of other things I would rather spend $280 on at the moment!

From what I've heard to date, Jetpack is planning on using the majority of the blanks for a Free Comic Book Day promotion with Kevin Eastman in May. That's all the details I have at the moment.

So most of them will only be available in person at events on the east coast? Hmmm... then again, if I can find anyone who is able to attend...

Hard to know at this point exactly how these will be distributed. I'm a bit confused because they are available now at $100 each but are planned to be used for FCBD promotion with Kevin. What if they sell out prior to May?

Cool issue. If we get another all Kevin issue I would prefer it to be a bit more turtle-y. I was kinda getting bored about 1/3 of the way through it, but I enjoyed the art and the silly jokes most of all.

First time I tried to read this, I put it down. Second time, I liked it quite a bit. I wonder if anyone else gave it a second look and decided they liked it affer all.
Also, I'm wondering why we haven't heard from Mirage-and-TMNT comics guru Andrew on his take.

Still collating, here. Honestly haven't had time this past week to really sit down and give it the attention it deserves.

Is that true? That'd be cool. I remember getting the first issue at a Free Comic Book Day. Don't remember what year though.

Well, it's a FCBD "promotion" that these blanks are planned for. I highly doubt they will be free or given away...but who knows?

Just got mine yesterday, the regular cover for only $7. I also got a hold of the "Making Of Coming Out Of Their Shells" on VHS for only $2. I'm going to post pictures in another thread soon.

Is it bigger than the usual, or are you just calling the 60 pages huge?

It has the same dimensions as a modern comic book with exception of thickness - it is fatter than the regular monthly ongoing comics. It's also bound like a TPB instead of with staples. I'd estimate it is about half of the thickness that a normal TPB is.

I already own two Rich, but the way Redrum said it I though one of the variants might have been bigger, which would explain the price hike

Oh, gotcha. My bad...sorry.
For confirmation though, I have all the variants of this and they are the exact same with exception of cover.

Re-read this last weekend and liked it considerably more than my first read-through. Anyone who was disappointed by lofty expectations, I'd recommend giving it another shot for what it is. The pacing is actually quite good, even if the turtles aren't in it all that much.

Its cool, I appreciate the confirmation, that the variants are variants in cover only. Doesn't make me want those blanks ones any less, but knowing they are going to do a FCBD promotion means I might make the trek up there for the day.

What you talking about? You should have plenty of cash after your work on Brotherly Love and Boy Meets World... Though I think your best work may have been as Sam Collins on the Super Human Samurai Syber-Squad!
I'm sorry MattLawrence... I couldn't help myself

That the Turtles kind of took a backseat in the comic didn't really bother me. The whole story reminded me of Guy Ritchie movies like Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch, except dumber and goofier. I loved it.

At first, the issue kind of confused me. It was a little hard to follow and piece everyone and everything together. I had to go back a few times to refresh on who was who. After finishing it though, I enjoyed it! Lots of humor, not much dealing with the turtles wasnt a bright spot but I liked a look at the Savates. Gave some insight as to who these guys are.

okay, now I have gotten mine and read it finally!....
I really am happy with this story, the turtles taking a back seat alright, but they commin into the picture again later on and kick major butt!!I LOOOVE the duo shades paper and the feel of the city here...thought the characters were fun(although after first reading I couldnt see why he cared for introducing the driver of the car, he was knocked out in the crash and never came bac for anything later am I wrong?)...the rocky dumboa line was funny;)had to smile when I read that...same thing with the 3 stooges remark;)...and the foot meet foot line reminded me of some place in the guts of the wonderful mirage world...excited in the shredders den and to see all those savate in action was a blast too!
I am glad I perchased this for a friend, too and nw reorder for a few other brothers of mine...keep em comming I say!!

Just got this last weekend with all of the trades and I hav to say it was so much fun havin a fully drawn Kevin Eastman comic book again!
I really loved everything about this even his corny comments.
We learned quite a bit about many of the characters in this and I love when things come together.
I hope we get more like this soon but I can't help but think this being in color as well would of helped those confused with following things just a bit even though I love the old Mirage B&W feel.:)

Glad you liked it!
If you were excited about Kevin Eastman drawing the Turtles again, then you'll love the fact that he will be drawing issue #21!

I'm sure it was meant to say a
True BROTHER, as that makes sense....
but who could that be a spelling error on thousands of books?
Do you think they are still very bitter and it was meant to say "BOTHER" and Eastman is brushing this off like it was a typo?
I mean what is the deal with this dedication, I never understood.

I'm sure it was, but isn't it funny how they are at ends with eachother and then the type happens?
I just think it's a weird coincidence.
