Woody --

lives.

The Issue was a pretty good, but I feel like since we waited so long for this one, it was anti-climatic, especially since the appearance of Slash was not a surprise. (Is #16 on its way yet, LOL?)

i guess it's because we did not have a micro-series issue come out in between like previous months. i too feel it's been too long since the last issue.

Mostly enjoyable issue and believe it or not, I actually found Slash to be drawn even better here than in the April special. I figured he'd be from an alligator snapper... now he's like a melding of Tokka and Archie Slash and that's fine by me.

One thing, though... it's a little hard for me to take seriously the Killer Turtle when at every turn the story stops and makes sure we know that everyone he hurts is OK. Probably a Nick thing.

i haven't forgotten. i'm psyched. but i meant this past month it felt longer than usual. i'm certain we'll get bombarded with Turtles in the next few months.

side note: i actually like khun's art here (except the Turtles). his humans are quite impressive.

Not sure if its a nod to Tokka while being Slash due to the difference in depiction in this issue.

Slash ripping that guy's shirt and using it as a mask to mimmick the turtles was clever and gave me a snicker. Also, the media names him Slash. Reminds me of how The Daily Bugle once did that in ASM.

Nice plotpoint of moving the turtles into a hopefully permanent lair. Bomb shelter under a church with access to the sewer? Creative, historical, and cool. I say that as a history buff.

It looks like the whole killing vs no killing policy will come to a head next issue and be in my boy Mikey's hands.

Glad the pizza deliver boy did not get killed, but it would not have been any of loss if he was. I thought for sure he was slashed.

Speculation wise...

So, how many more cages are there in the lab? TMNT,Splinter,Slash, and ?

Could Slash be reincarnated as well and perhaps be Teng Shen and Oroku Saki's illegimate son?:teek:

I hope Slash is not re-incarnated in any way. To me the thing I love most about IDW's depiction of Slash is the pure animal he is. He is all instinct, pure carnal animal instinct. He's after the turtles and stalks them & hunts them

until he finally tracks them back to their new lair and attacks

To me he is everything that Stockman is trying to create for Krang with his experiments. A mindless pure rage war machine soldier who is released to hunt down and bring carnage. I think that's definitely more "realistic" of what a mutated animal would be like if it didn't have any brain enhancement or played part of the re-incarnation theme. So far he is spot on, I hope they leave re-incarnation out of it when it comes to Slash.

Every character in this comic is not going to be reincarnated from someone in ancient Japan. I'm not sure why this keeps getting brought up everytime a new character is brought into the series.

I was only addressing MikeandRaph's statement about the re-incarnation issue, thats the only reason I brought it up in my post. Everyone is going to have differing stances on how deep the reincarnation of characters theme goes, so obviously yes not every character is going to be reincarnated (I hope!) but you can't blame some people for theorizing/hoping for certain main characters to be a part of that theme, thats just going to vary on personal preference. I really don't see the speculation and guessing about if a character has a previous tie to the Turtles going away anytime soon. :trazz: It may get old, but I think until we have the Shredder origin fully laid out and some idea of why in NYC and why now that all these things from the past are returning, this issue is going to come out after every new character is introduced. I personally hope it stops at the 4 turtles, Splinter, and Shredder. Those have all been well done, but I don't want to see anymore, but that's just my preference and it isn't any more valid than anyone elses. :trazz:

Good issue, but I have one gripe:
Why, if the police are on the look out for Slash, and the Turtles match his description, does Leonardo have no qualms with Raph going to Casey's, very public, hockey game?

That's a good point, character flaw in a young leader?

I'm going to have to go back and reread it, I don't have it in front of me at this point, I left it at work. At what point does the police description of Slash come into play in the issue? Is it before or after Raph first mentions going to the game? If its after Raph brings up the game, it could just be that they're so focused on finding the new lair that the thought of Raph matching the description of Slash that they heard while on this mini mission never really sinks in until he's beating the crap out of them in their new lair?

The guys save a mugging victim and both he and the muggers flip, assuming they are Slash-s, and right after Raph mentions the game, again.

Ahh that's right, thanks for refreshing my memory. They seemed to both be a little confused at that point why the guy they just saved ran off, you're right a red flag should've been raised in Leo's mind there. I guess it didn't sink in? Maybe this story, like the annual is set around Halloween, and they feel that Raph going to the game with April in a jacket with a hoodie pulled up could be considered a costume? Hockey fans go nuts with face paint and fan get-ups maybe Raph had some sort of plan to use that to blend in. That's kinda weak, I agree with you that Leo should've at least tried to argue with Raph or state that he doesn't want him going.

Actually, we're probably in February on the timeline right now.

Anyways, great issue this month. Kuhn did some cool stuff and the fight with Slash at the end was brilliant in all departments, particularly coloring.

Not sure how I feel about Mikey's whining about Shredder, but he'll easily change his tune if Shredder goes too far.

Raph was obviously going to wear a trench coat to the game! No one would have suspected a thing. :D

After Woody's talk with Michelangelo in the issue, I really have come to like the character. He's a good soul, and a nice ally to the turtles. As a character who's fully accepting of five foot tall talking turtles, he's a very believable person.

I love, love, LOVE the way Khun drew and Waltz portrayed Slash. More primal and instinct and a mix of Slash and Tokka's strongest design points, this is probably the first time I've really liked this character.

Thank you. It was really bothersome the lack of attention that Leo gave this. I mean I completely understand Raph wanting to support his friend and I thought that it played a nice role in furthering their bond. Yet Leo not having one negative thing to say about it just seemed off. I feel like it might have been one of those situations where Leo knows that Raph is going to do whatever he wants so why bother wasting the energy trying to stop him, but even then that feels like a weak excuse to explain his actions.

I also hate how conveniently awesome the new lair appears to be. I understand that its a comic and belief has to be suspended, but they find a huge place to live rent free. It was just too convenient for my tastes.

I did love getting some Splinter / Casey time to see how they've begun bonding and I really liked Casey questioning Splinter on watching Soap Operas

Here's my review for TMNT #15 at TMNT Entity. (http://tmntentity.blogspot.com/2012/11/tmnt-idw-15.html)

Loved it. I like Kuhn's visual take on Slash, as he's more or less fused him with Tokka and I'm A-OK with that (Tokka always seemed rather derivative of Slash, anyway). Waltz's explanations for all of Slash's quirks and motivations make use of the mythology he's crafted and work in-story. None of that "there just happens to be a planet populated by people that look JUST LIKE the Turtles" stuff.

And I know some people hate it, but I LIKED how the 4Kids cartoon gave Splinter a love of soap operas. I'm glad to see that's stuck.

Haven't read the Annual, yet, but it's next on my que.

He would've been in disguise, incognito, and sitting high up in the nosebleed bleachers if he'd made it to Casey's game.

As for Leo trying to stop him, if the beginning of our Annual shows anything, it's that Raph -- and Casey -- are gonna do what they're gonna do.

I read #15 this morning before work and I'll read the Annual tonight. I like the gritty feel of the books with the artist that's been around a couple of months now. He really nails all of the characters other than the turtles, in my opinion. I don't care for the bucktooth look that the turtles get so often. If he changed that one thing, I would have no qualms with the art. The writing is so good though that the art is only a minor gripe!

Good stuff, the art was definitely better this time around. I also enjoy the idea of combining Slash and Tokka. I really liked the scene where he puts on his back mask, but with the snapping turtle design, he looks a lot goofier wearing it than not.

Also love that their new lair is under a church. Nice nod to Volume 2, if I'm not mistaken.

It starts off a month after the Turtles and Splinter are mutated, jumps forward a few months to the time April's micro occurs, then leads into the present day (denoted by Now in the comic) when Slash finds the Turtles and the battle begins.

I was being sarcastic, bud. I don't really think its the case at all just something amusing that crossed my mind when reading the issue. It happens when people have been around Jester too long.:P

I appreciate Tom inserting humor into this where it fits as well such as Slash's bandanna or Splinter's love of the other troubled industry soap operas. This title truely is a great blend of everything TMNT. Most pockets of fandom can have something to be excited about with this book.

"I Wok Therefore I Yam." :tlol:

It was kind of nice to see Splinter able to relax for once. The poor guy's been under almost constant stress since the beginning.

Also, I think Slash was used very effectively here. He's an absolute monster, and his furious surprise attack on the turtles was truly suspensful. I'm really anxious to see how the turtles deal with this thing. It was also nice to see a Hob cameo, I chuckled at the panel where he's been knocked out by what looks like a fast food meal.

MikeandRaph87
11-01-2012, 04:18 PM
Just to add,Slash a turtle is conditioned to hunt for the kill other turtles? I could see Leatherhead in that position, a natural predator opposed to a fellow turtle.

While referencing Leatherhead, could Mike be in a similar position to "What A Croc" as he is currently with Slash? Able to litterally knock sense into a the conditoned monster and thus SLash becomes an anti-hero? Never knowing if he will want to kill or help his fellow mutant turtles?

Venom

I enjoyed reading this the other night; a great deal in fact!!

Slash is *not* a monster, he's a victim of circumstance as noted by his limited thoughts and vocabulary. Very much an amalgamation of Tokka/Slash, and if he does bite the dust as I predict, I would personally have liked to see Tokka bite it rather than Slash since he wasn't really developed much in SotO.

I wish the entire issue had been dedicated to "the hunt" and build up suspense, because the brief moments we got were truly full of tension and the air thickened when the Turtles had that "Oh sh**! moment.

With Raph an Don seemingly unconscious and Leo pinned against the wall, I wonder if Mike will be teh one forced to kill Slash in order to save his brother?

He seems like the one pondering the most on the subject and working on his thoughts regarding the matter.

I know its not gonna happen, and I'm pretty sure Slash is gonna die soon, but I would LOVE the idea of Slash becoming a bit of an anti-hero character. Might be a good way to pair him with Leatherhead too... I also always loved the way the Archive series redeemed Slash, I would love a story like that. Oh well. They shouldn't just retread old Archie stories just because they were amazing, its a new deal here.

You know, you just posed the worst and best outcome of next issue. Mike forced to kill savage conditioned Slash after months of writing in to Tom and the gang asking for Slash to appear to use as a character study and anti-hero. Not an Archie retread, but a struggling character between good and evil and a Leatherhead team up attacking the turtles!Something I have wanted since I was a kid. I have more riding on this issue than any other poster! Its either going to be perosnally ironic or very epic. :teek:

I'm wondering about this, too... this also seems to be a very different take on the Fugitoid than past takes (which for me include that somewhat comic, ridiculous robot from the future, Big Macc I think was his name?). Anyway, I was disappointed in this issue because it seemed more like a transition issue than anything and I like the issues that "pay out." It is an interesting take on Slash, one that makes logical sense but is still different from what we've seen from that character thus far. I have a feeling that next issue will be great since that issue will be the pay out.

I really don't see Slash dying unless he's impaled on something. The turtles & Splinter are reluctant to kill Shredder, their mortal enemy who killed them all once, I don't see them going from reluctantly being on a kill Shredder mission that breaks their non lethal violence code to killing any tough villain they fight. I think they're going to have to use their teamwork to outsmart him, maybe temporarily beat him, knock him out and lock him up in the storm cellar, then get master Splinter and come back to find him gone & track him to Krangs HQ where they're transported to Dimension X. Or have Slash defeat them all, drag them back to Krang's where they recover (maybe they strategically lose to find out where Slash comes from?) Only to awake, attack Krang in his stronghold and get teleported to Dimension X in the process.

I think Slash has too much potential to be offed so quickly, and like I said I don't see the turtles going from reluctant killers to just killing every villain they face. That'd be out of character in my opinion.

I feel like it could go either way, but when I was reading, it definitely felt like the whole "Destroy Shredder Manifesto" related to "what we must do to survive," and the villain in the issue just happens to be trying to kill them. Maybe this is the story arc where they begin to accept that sometimes killing is unavoidable in order to survive, which helps them ultimately accept their mission to destroy the Shredder. While they have honor, it is a bit naive and unrealistic for the point of the story to be that you can avoid encounters with enemies who are trying to kill you by constantly locking them in the storm cellar... Not exactly the winning war strategy. It's probably more heroic and mature to accept hard truths.

I get what you're saying and I agree, obviously it would be easier and more realistic to just kill Slash. The Mirage Turtles would do it no doubt, but these aren't the Mirage turtles. I believe how they've been portrayed thus far they won't kill him. Would it make it easier for the turtles? Most definitely! But then I think we'll get a Master Splinter "when given a choice always take the harder of the 2 paths." Splinter wants them to live a peaceful existence, and he thought long & hard over having to change that view to kill Shredder. Saki has killed them all once before and they were still hesitant to kill him to prevent history from repeating itself. They aren't taking killing lightly, I really don't think they go from that to killing slash because hens after them. That's 14 issues of the ongoing + micro series issues of characterization gone out the window. How Slash any different than Hob wanting to kill them? They didn't kill Hob, so I don't see them killing Slash. But we'll see what #16 brings.

One could say it's harder to decide to take a life to save another life, and others may say it's harder to risk your life for ideals. I think people could argue either way is heroic or necessary. There is a difference between intending to kill someone, and being at that very moment. If Slash is literally hunched over Leo with a killing blow ready, and he is so strong that he won't respond to anything but a lethal blow in kind, that's a kind of choice that may be placed in front of the turtles that we haven't seen just yet. Obviously I don't know what's going to happen in future issues, but I don't think that if they do come to that path and decide to save their brother over preserving peaceful values, it means all the characterization is out the window. What has been explored so far is what they may or may not be willing to do for their family. Either outcome is an exploration of that. It's not about the right answer, but the fact that people have differing views (as we may have) on tough questions like these. If you used to believe in something but decided you were wrong, does that mean you are acting out of character? Or that everything you believed before was a farce? I don't think so. You make choices; that's what we have that define us. Whether or not the turtles decide to use lethal force is something learned about themselves, which I think is the point of the exploration of this whole issue.

Just got and read this issue today! I've been pretty critical of the series in the past, but I re-read every issue + all the micros over the past few days and really enjoyed myself. The story flows so much better when you have another issue in your hands right after you finish one.

Like most everyone else I enjoyed this issue. Slash is awesome, not much on character, but an awesome design. He looks like a giant standing on that staircase. Kudos to Mr. Kuhn. If Slash is killed maybe that leaves the door open for Tokka down the road? Maybe Tokka and Rahzar are those failed experiments that were stored next to Slash at Stockgen. Not very likely(?) but who knows... :twink: Next up: Annual!

Speaking of who the other mutants are logically Leatherhead would be next. It seems a bit odd to me atleast that a turtle would be conditioned to hunt other turtles. A crocodile is a natural predator of a turtle and it would seem Leatherhead would be conditioned to hunt shellbacks and pop up in a handful of issues after Slash's inital story has played out and the Dimension X/Turtles And Space happens not ot mention the Leo as Shredder's number are all played out.

What if the third batch of micros kick off with a Baxter Stockman issue that will explain the experiments at Stock Gen from his prospective getting into his inital involvement with being bankrolled by Krang and why the five turtles and rat were being experimetnted with and what others were also experimented on and each experiments (intial) purpose. perhaps revealing Leatherhead in the process? Okay, maybe I am reaching but I am trying to make an educated guess as to what is next on that plot thread. I am very eager to know how many experiements there were and what character may be awaiting after Slash's surprise appearance.

On the plot switch front, could Slash be talked down and the turtles find out through him about what Baxter Stockman is up to which lead them to his location and thus Krang who traps them in Dimension X(temporarily of course)? Its about the only way I can think of that can make the plot speed up to get to the Krang confrontation and subsequent Dimension adventure.

Its about the only way I can think of that can make the plot speed up to get to the Krang confrontation and subsequent Dimension adventure.

you make some valid points and i'd have to agree with you on the leatherhead part. he does seem the most likely to be one of those mutants in the other two tubes. given what we know of his mirage origins and how close we are approaching to Turtles in Space story arc... it's almost certain (speculatively of course) that he's one of them.

however... while i like your suggestions on the micro-series... not everyone will like the idea of having a "baxter's freak of the month" batch of micro-series. i personally like the idea and think it's the most likely to happen. i'd love a to see a leatherhead micro by the way. but if they do plan on killing slash off for the sake of the "kill to survive" storyline (which i think is very important)... i don't think slash will survive long enough to make it to the next batch of micros.

I am not suggesting the frak of the month concept just why the turtles and a rat were used to experiment with and why the other animals were as well. Nothing more than the slection of the animals and the procedures done to them plus the Baxer/KRang connection being established!

I read this issue the other night and I am happy to say I enjoyed it more than I expected. The art by Andy surpassed my expections, much better than I thought it would be :D

I love the fact that their lair is now in a abandon church/Nuke shelter!!!!! and is has a back exit to the sewer!!!!! I hope they dont kill slash off and make him a one shot character in the series, I wish he was about the size of the others or at least human size, mostly bc I think shredder could take him on as his pupil!!

I think the IDW Slash resembles Tokka much more closely in his appearance and his actions than he does the Archie Slash. Although I found the origin story for the Archie Slash to be pretty lame I liked his character a lot more than Tokka.

That being said, it was still a pretty exciting issue and I'm stoked to find out what's gonna happen in the next couple issues.

Maybe after Andy is relieved of his duty as the lead artist, Slash's depiction will more closely resemble that of the Archie slash. (If Slash lasts that long).

Somehow I get the impression Slash's IDW appearance is going to vary wildly between artists. I guess that's OK.

Ross May's cover art for #16 is fastly becoming one of my favorite pieces of TMNT art period. I wouldn't mind a Slash that looked like THAT in the book-itself.

I believe you meant Ross Campbell, my good doctor.

I agree. It keeps things interesting though.

So, remember this little moment from way back in issue #8 (see attached pic)?

What... did you think Stockman was just giving Krang the runaround or what?

If so... see issue #15 (and #16) -- SLASH!

Sorry to rehash this again, but after rereading this issue the following bugged me:

Good issue, but I have one gripe:
Why, if the police are on the look out for Slash, and the Turtles match his description, does Leonardo have no qualms with Raph going to Casey's, very public, hockey game? The guys save a mugging victim and both he and the muggers flip, assuming they are Slash-s, and right after Raph mentions the game, again.

Why is everyone bothered by Raph going to the hockey game when Leo decides to save the guy being mugged and expose themselves when the police are looking for a Slash-type creature? Leo leads them into potential harm by saving the mugging victim. I would have left the victim be and avoid being spotted at all costs.

I love, love, LOVE the way Khun drew and Waltz portrayed Slash. More primal and instinct and a mix of Slash and Tokka's strongest design points, this is probably the first time I've really liked this character.

I am really digging Kuhn's non-Turtles. I liked the April Micro Slash, but Kuhn's Slash is SO much better!

"I Wok Therefore I Yam."

I laughed out loud when I read this!

(Yes... we have a plan, fans... we always have a plan... MWAHAHAHA!)

We trust you Tom. We know that you will not disappoint us...
... and if you ever did, we would hunt you down! :fshifty:
