Official Discussion for the episode!

Not a bad episode today that was sort of the Nick version of the OT's "Turtles of the Jungle" without the wackiness of the jungle vines, giant monkey/Donatello, and Shredder's involvement. April was really the star of this episode along with Donatello, since it eventually led to her first encounter with Splinter and agreed upon being a Ninja with the rest of the team. It also exploited more about what happened to April's father. This April really is good in self-defense, as the OT April after the monkey grabbed her would almost surely say "Put me down you big ape", but this April really shows how to calm the monkey.

The flow chart about Don about how to hang out with April was a little silly, but it does note that Don does go to much over his head sometimes and it did cost him for awhile in battle, but in the end he over encountered the "pyschic" powers and forced the scientist to escape presumably to the Kraang. No real development with the Krang and no mention of Shredder and the Foot means that we're due for them to come out with a plan soon. At least unlike the OT where this would just be another "Mad Scientist" episode, there is some connection to the Kraang, and the Turtles still use their weapons, and there were some funny jokes about monkeys.

Overall: 7/10

I got beaten by one minute, so please merge with the other thread!

DAMN It. I missed the Episode! All I saw were Donny fighting some random guy with psychic powers or something. It looked cool but then the Episode ended with Don asking April out again...oh and apparently April will learn the ways of Ninja from Splinter!

Jeffrey Combs. He also voices Ratchet in Transformers Prime and Proffeser Hatecraft in Scooby Doo: Mystery Incorperated.

I thought the episode was pretty good! Don's flow chart was hilarious, and Don was pretty cool throughout. :)

I do think there's a bit of careless plotting in the show though... way better lessons could be taught to youngsters if a) the Turtles had been more compassionate and had showed the monkey a spot in the sewers he could live in, as they did with Leatherhead in the past, and b) Don was able to use his greatest strength--his mind--to defeat the villain. For example, thinking so much that he confuses the villain, like by imagining multiple attacks at once so the villain couldn't fight back.

Just my two cents.

I thought it would have been better if

Donnie defeated the scientist by using his superior brain power rather than turning off his brain altogether. For example, if he'd imagined a bunch of different attacks and confused the scientist.

But apart from that, good episode. Particularly liked the t-phone ringtone. :P

A really fun Donnie based episode. I got a real kick out of his flow chart on how to hang out with April. I thought they had great chemistry in this episode as opposed to other ones. Monkey Brains' (is that his official mutant name?) eyes really freaked me out when they were bugging out of his skull. :o

LOL, I just said the exact same thing!

Agreed. The show should emphasize playing to one's strengths, not changing yourself if your way doesn't work the way others want it to.

It's great to have normal human villains not connected to Shredder in any way.

I'm glad nobody complained about the Turtles laughing at Donnie scene yet.

I know some people won't like that scene.

Are you kidding that was the best scene in the entire episode for me. I was so nervous that they would immediately start poking fun at Donny. The fact that they showed concern and made sure he was alright before laughing at him was brilliant. It was very indicative of a real life situation. Had they just showed concern it would have been awful, because the best part of the Turtles is that they are able to laugh at all of the insanity that is thrust upon them, as soon as they know the threat is eliminated. Donny was fine and they could tell that so they joked about the situation in order to deal with it. We all cope with trauma in our own way and the Turtles have always relied heavily on humour to deal with their failures. Its that or all of them sit there and think damn that could have been me and lose their levity and strength. That and the beauty of "No more monkey puns"

The whole episode in general was just perfect. The pacing, the plot, the character development, it all just came together in the right way to make this the strongest episode since the first. The turtles continue to feel like teenagers who still have to learn to be the mean green fighting machines we know and love.

The scene where Mikey was able to defend against all Splinter's attacks because he goes with the flow was brilliant, it completely explains the whole wild card status he seems to have on the team. Whole thing was beautiful

Leonardo actually attacking a human with his swords, fantastic

Falco was also a great villain. I loved his whole demeanor throughout and the way he saw things once he had the psychic powers was awesome. It was like that Nicholas Cage movie Next accept not completely disappointing at the end.

Actually getting some time with April, and her being a dynamic character and not just a damsel in distress was such a breathe of fresh air. TMNT 2k12 April would never sit outside of the TCRI building crying about how she can't contribute, she would do whatever was possible for her to help her friends. I want to see more of her and I'm excited that the scene between her and Splinter happened, because it will probably mean more screen time for her.

Overall I can't wait to see how this episode ties in with the rest of the story. I want Falco to come back, and the fact that the Mutagen has been somewhat refined means we'll probably see less Spider-Bytes type mutants in the future.

I also can't wait till I can find a screen capture of Donatello's to ditch his brothers and solve the mystery alone. Those pictures were cute as hell...

Rooish
11-03-2012, 11:37 AM
Agreed, it was fantastic that April got some development! I can't believe I forgot that.

I do think the episode was really good, but do think it would just be a bit better if Don had managed to defeat bad guy dude with his brains, not by putting aside his greatest strength.

The teasing didn't bother me too much because they did indeed check if Don was injured first. I guess the times I really don't like the teasing are when it's Raph against Don, because Don seems genuinely nervous about fighting back. But that didn't happen in this epsiode. And sometimes Splinter's a tad mean, too. This only bothers me because I genuinely think kids emulate what they see. But oh well, boys will be boys right? :trolleye:

Yeah it was fun for me to hear them mentions streets in my neighborhood. Bleeker is around the corner from Houston, and Delancey Street (although like a 10 - 15 minute walk) isn't too far from either of them.

What does confuse me about this new show is how there seems to be no one walking the streets of NYC. There's always someone walking around the Downtown area.

I just realized that the turtles don't wear disguises like in the OT. No Tor Johnson masks this time around :tlol:. And Donnie didn't try to cure Monkey Brains like he would of in the OT. They just sort of let the near brainless mutant monster loose on the city.

I'm not too familiar with the 4kids series, did they wear disguises to walk around the city, or did they just stick to rooftops?

Mostly roof tops, but they occasionally wore street cloths (like in Fallen Angel or Return of the Justice Force) and even the good old trench coat/fedora combo in Garbage Man

Me: "Yeah. Perfect lazy, defeatist attitude for a leader, jerk."

I don't know I think that was being a good leader. Sure it could be taken as defeatist, but it felt more like April was kind of freaking out and developing false hope that she had finally found her Father. Leonardo taking the time to be a realist and make sure she kept her head on straight. It was also true, yes the Kraang had provided Falco with mutagen, but it didn't lead to anything about April's dad. Leo needed to make sure that they weren't getting their hopes up too high in the event that they are dashed.

And I'm saying this as a fan of Raph.

I agree. It feels good to have an episode like like this. I'm a fan of the OT mad scientist episodes so this was a real throw back in that sense, but also a lot more mature what with the torture of Monkey Brains. And we need more April in this show, and this episode gave us more of her personality.

Agreed. Some of the best TMNT stories come from them facing normal humans, or gangsters or thugs, or whatever.

Granted this episode did have a mutant, but he wasn't the main enemy so its not in the same way. On that note did anyone wonder why the monkey couldn't speak?

Maybe it was because since the mutagen that mutated Rockwell was tampered with, it caused some side affects for him, which could explain why he couldn't talk.

Holy smokes, this episode totally made up for the epic fail of last week. Even the weirdness between Don and April was handled well and came off pretty cute rather than just creepy or stupid. Totally loved seeing Don finally able to hold his own (though, without his bo...of course) and his brothers actually, you know, recognize it. The interactions between all 4 turtles finally felt natural too. I'm also starting to confirm my belief that Raph isn't really that huge a fan of April, he never really seems to pay a whole lot of attention to her until one of his brother's speaks up.

Anyway, was feeling pretty let down last week and pretty annoyed with all the turtles as a whole, but this episode really captured them all spot on. Definitely hope to see more like this in the future (though with a little less April crushing).

I'm not usually a fan of monkeys on screen, but I was getting a creepy 'Toy Story 3' cymbal monkey vibe from his eyes which is infinitely more fun than monkey puns (at least the characters acknowledge they are terrible puns!).

Not the best episode, not the worst. I agree what someone said before about it being more enjoyable to see them fight humans (for now, anyway) but the showdown with Falco was a bit lack luster - wasn't sure what was happening at first with the blue shadows.

Don is great, as usual. Although the dialogue is natural, it seems that whenever there is focus on one turtle the usual way to split up some of the time for the others is to have them "gather round" and make a bunch of one liners. That said, they are funny one-liners.

I am a big admirer of planet of the apes movies and comics, so this psychic monkey experiment strike it home with me;)...
found it exciting to see the guys sparring with one another and funny how michelangelo ditched splinters attacks and ate the peparoni on the floor;)..the original theme from the game boy game fall of the foot clan as the t fones ringtone?INCREDIBLE!;)hahaha..
what else?well, I found it funny as mike wouldn't pause his video game when dinner was there, yet I dont like his solution..I feel I often am in this situation myself with computers, tv and whatnot and would have found it sweet if spliner or the guys themselves had decided to pause one thing and do just one thing at a time concentrated;)...maybe thisll be some slice of lesson in the future if mike keeps on eating like that without looking;)...oh, splinters lesson and especially the way he worded it was really beautiful I think!!find the space in between the thoughts and start living in there(or something LIKE that)...what majestic and yet simple truth..I love splinter in this version!!all the fight scenes were again awesome to witnesss and stay mucho fun re-watching and re-re-watching.the scene with april and donnie entering the lab gave a nice creepy vibe and overall donatellos behaviour about april is so much stuff to laugh to;)hahahaa..for example just the way he focused on lowering his voice when april interrupted his 'hang out with april-plan-scene' uh hi-h--hi-HI APRIL;)...hahahahaha great job rob paulson!;)...and the guys laughing at leo after making sure hes allright?hahahahaha SOOO GOOD!!;)thats all I remember at the moment but it was just great fun again!;)cant wait to re-watch it for the third time today!booyakashaaaa!!

Pretty decent episode this week for sure. I really liked it and the premise behind it. The lesson Splinter gave was good as well as his willingness to train April. Her gift wasn't as annoying as I thought it would be, and I like how they used kunoichi and actually gave the pronunciation. I always was pronouncing it as ku-no-ee-chee. I guess the i is silent. I loved Don in this ep and even his time with April wasn't bad at all. I like how she's getting more development and hope to see it in the future.

My fave quotes:

Splinter: If you think, you lose sight of what is.

Leo: Okay, Falco, we've had enough of your--
Raph: Don't say monkeying around.
Leo: I wasn't going to!
Falco: Yes, you were.

Mikey: Whoa. It's like he's psychic.
Don: He IS psychic, shell brain. That's what he said.
Mikey: Oh, I tuned out during his whole 'I'm evil, blah, blah, blah' speech.

Don: Gentleman and lady, I give you the T-Phone.
Mikey: Hey, I'm in charge of naming things around here. I would have called it the T-Phone.
Don: I DID call it the T-Phone.
Mikey (in whiny voice): Yeah, but I wanted to call it the T-Phone.

Well, that's my review. See you next Saturday. I definitely can't wait for the next episode for sure.

I think this episode had the strongest plot of all the episodes so far. Usually we're just shown the mutant right away and we get some Kraang fights, this episode had a mystery around it.

But as always, its the Turtles who make the show. This show really is worth watching simply for the interactions of the Turtles, Splinter and April themselves.

Falco: Yes, you were.

Mikey: Whoa. It's like he's psychic.
Don: He IS psychic, shell brain. That's what he said.
Mikey: Oh, I tuned out during his whole 'I'm evil, blah, blah, blah' speech.

I loved those quotes. This was one of my favorites:

Raph: Psychic, huh? Well then you must know that I'm gonna beat the...!
Falco: Beat the white off my labcoat? How humorous .
Raph: Lucky guess!

Did Falco's fighting style remind anyone else of Agent Bishop?

Now that you mention it, it was kinda like Bishop's fighting style.

Yeah, I was thinking the same. That's because Bishop always fought on the defensive too. It was rare to see him initiate an attack, he'd mostly just block or counter whatever the turtles threw at him.

I always thought Bishop was a really cool villain. I'd like to see him return for sure. :D

IGN gave this episode an 8.8:

Great review! Also i read all the comments! and none of them says something against the show. I remeber that before the show starts IGN was full of people who were saying that the show will suck or that it will be only for kids. But now evryone likes it! :):)

Alright episode, I'd like to see both of them again if they were given more depth to their characters which I think it can be expanded on. If not then they're just average characters.

While the episodes are fun to watch I want to see if they'll be able to balance it off by having a darker episode, maybe the Enter:Shredder episode will be that one. For a show that seems very influenced by Teen Titans it's still lacking in the character interaction/charm/uniqueness from said show hopefully it is also influenced by having darker episodes. That balance made TT great.

This was one of my favorite episodes thus far. I loved the graph part with Donnie and how much it reminded me of Sheldon Cooper and Leo's surprise at how it did in fact plan for any contingency. I actually really liked the plot with the scientist and being mutated into the monkey and the human element it added to the show.

I have seen people remarking how Falco reminded them of Bishop and that it so true. In a way this episode reminded me of "Dragon's Brew" from the 2003 show in terms of a man mutated someone that was suppose to be his friend and just how disgusting that makes the character appear. This had that same chilling quality to it because of that. Though I also wish they would have done more for the Rockwell mutate then just be like "he'll be fine" :trazz:

Loved the lesson of the episode, the "learning to fight by instinct" is a training trope you see a lot in martial arts films and TV shows and I always like it. I also thought it was a good growth for Donnie and that if he just would have solved the issue by being brilliant it wouldn't have shown him developing. Crafting your body to the point where you can function in combat without thought is in incredible skill that takes years to learn for some people and I thought it was a credit to Don that he really tapped into something that was so unnatural for him to do.

I was actually really starting to like April in this episode her compassion for both Rockwell and Donnie was adorable and her power wasn't as cringe worthy as I had feared. At least until the final scene. When April was being a smart ass with Sensei it just really rubbed me the wrong way. Had she been that way with any of the guys would not have cared but it actually made me dislike her character even more now that she is coming across as one of the bitchy tweens that seem so popular in kids shows these days. :trazz:

I don't know I think that was being a good leader. Sure it could be taken as defeatist, but it felt more like April was kind of freaking out and developing false hope that she had finally found her Father. Leonardo taking the time to be a realist and make sure she kept her head on straight. It was also true, yes the Kraang had provided Falco with mutagen, but it didn't lead to anything about April's dad. Leo needed to make sure that they weren't getting their hopes up too high in the event that they are dashed.

And I'm saying this as a fan of Raph.

Also this was also my thought I complete agree with this statement and I am saying this as a fan of Leonardo :twink:

The episode was OK, the humor was good as always and I actually like this Mikey but I am so over Donnie's crush on April, just be over with it already.
The music in this show is just awesome though.
The only thing I'm a bit worrid about is how they're gonna handle April and her powers, I don't want a Mary Sue that ends up saving the day but I have faith in the writers.

Actually April wasn't b*tchy to Splinter. She was trying to encourage him, and she wasn't paying attention to what he was saying like most teenagers do.

And, yes, I was reminded of Bishop when I saw Falco fight, though his method was different from Bishop's. Still, he definitely seems like an interesting villain.

Didn't get to watch the episode until late because I hurt my neck and had to go to the chiropractor.

It was pretty decent story wise no gripes there at all and Mikey stole the show as usual with Don in a close second.
I'm still not caring for this April and the I can talk to Animals thing honestly had me rolling my eyes.
Hey disliking one character out of everyone so far isn't too bad. :)

My gripe still really lays with the transition from how characters looks from the hand drawn concepts to the CGI counterparts.
Though mind you I do try to look past it, and notice improvements from episode to episode.
For instance in some scenes April isn't shiny and I noticed Splinter was looking less boxy.

I can't believe no one else was creeped out by the Monkey's eyes.:o

Did anyone else wander how a scientist could hit one of the turtles and make them fly backwards? He's just a normal guy with psychic powers, so shouldn't he be kinda weak? Anyway, I've only seen four episodes so far, and this was probably my third favorite out of the four; not that great but not bad either.

I have been quite pleased with the humour and the action thus far in this series. I've been disappointed with the lack of story development though. It seems like every week there are new enemies and new problems but nothing is really getting resolved or even moving closer to being resolved. I think they have enough problems and enemies by now and need to start dealing with the ones they have. I also am not a huge fan of the new theme song. In fact I think of any of the television theme songs this one is the weakest. (including 1987, the next mutation , 2003, fast forward, and back to the sewers).

I don't think the character seen on the cover at the end of ep. 7 is The Rat King, the character on the cover in ep. 5 definitely looks like one of the C.O.W. boys of Moo Mesa though.

When I found out Jeffery Combs had voiced Dr. Victor Falco, it made really wish that my locale Best Buy would be open so I pick up Re-Animantor on Blu-ray (I live in Brooklyn, New York and I got hit by Hurricane Sandy. The Best Buy buy me was in a small shopping center by the water and, they had gotten a really bad flood. It is unknown when they will open again).

I apologize if this was already mentioned, but I love the choice of actors that Ciro Nieli and co. are choosing. If people are going nuts that Jeffery Combs was in a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle episode, I can only imagine fan's reactions to when Cassandra Peterson makes her guest appearance and for all we know, who else are in store to appear ?

I thought this was a very good episode. I love the foreshadowing of April and the more episodes I watch, the more I continue to love Splinter. Dr. Falco's blood shot eyes were pretty sick.

I also like the film poster that was behind the flow chart of Don's plans to hangout with April. The Space Hero's poster was a lot like Star Treck: The Motion Picture film poster (I know the show is a parody of Star Treck, but I like the show's nod).

Also, a huge praise for Rob Paulsen as Don. I really love Don in this incarnation.

@VaughnMichael: I actually thought when the monkey's eyes would bugle out was creepy so your not alone.

My two favorite shows currently on: American Horror Story: Asylum and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

I'm not sure if this is a appropriate or not, but in honor of Jeffery Combs being on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles:

I'm not sure if anyone else on here collects or have horror action figures, but when SOTA did there Now Playing line (a figure series devoted to horror, science and B/cult classic films) they originally was going to do a Herbet West figure as part of their series 3 line. In fact I had two figures from series two (Baron Harkonnen from Dune and Meg Mucklebones (which I actually regret getting rid of) from Legend) and they advertise Re-Animantor in their next series. Series 3 was going to not only have Herbt West but Captain Blake (from The Fog remake), the Jigsaw Killer from Saw (which ended up being in NECA's Cult Classic series) and The Leprechaun. The Herbet West figure ended up not being released with SOTA canceling the line.

AMOK Time was going to release a 12 inch Herbert West figure but that also never got released. I was hoping they would so that AMOK Time would release a Herbert West figure. I don't know why this guy has no luck becoming an action figure ?

I was thinking Reed Richards, but yeah. Mr. Fantastic is also a scientist, plus he (inadvertently) mutated his team into superheroes. Given the fact that the TMNT universe has always shown a lot of love towards Jack Kirby, it could be a nod to that character.

A bit of generic episode. But it had awesome character interactions and fight scenes.
"Apriltello" is still nice and Don's flowchart was...odd, but cute in a funny way.

Falco's "fighting style" was awesome and have certainly reminded of Bishop. Though as a villain he was much like generic mad scientist from OT. Also, it was a nice twist that he was the main villain in this and not Kraang. Kind of unexpected.
