The RE Jetpack #2 cover is supposed to be "the first in a series of 4 covers that will interlock" but that cover is just the sketch version of RI B cover, so do you think that the RI B cover will also be " the first in a series of 4 covers that will interlock" or do you think that they will be different in future issues in order to make the people that want to have the 4 issue interlocking covers purchase through Jetpack comics?

Well they have used it already in the ongoing.

It's actually just the opposite. Jetpack #1 is the interlocking cover. Jetpack #2 is the sketch wraparound.

They sure made a lot of Kevin Eastman variants for this issue (not that I'm complaining). I have no idea which cover I'm going to get yet because they are all so excellent.

This may not be accurate but on the following webpage it says that both Jetpack #1 and Jetpack #2 are part one of interlocking covers.

Who drew that? It has a distinctly Laird vibe to it. Or is that earlier Eastman?

Pete's is based off of a sketch Kevin did, so I'm assuming the cover in use here is his actual sketch. Just don't know why they called it that.

I agree. And the lasers kinda disrupt a lot of Raph. But it is still nice to see some good old Mirage stuff in current publications. I just hope they give credit if there is need for credit.

It's a retailer exclusive. Dynamic Forces is the retailer.

Looks like it's actually by Kevin.

So could they really use any of the TMNT art Laird has drawn in the past without his permission?

Published art, yes. That is why Laird got paid $60 million. Random doodles, no.

Man all of those covers are gorgeous, its weird that there are to Retailer Incentive covers, but no 1:4 Cover B cover. I assume the RI covers are at a 1:10 & 1:25 rate, or is it higher?

I really wish they would have had Burnham tackle a cover, don't know if you guys have ever had the pleasure of meeting Erik or seen his art, but it's top notch, I've had the pleasure of meeting him quite a few times & have 14 or 15 sketches from him. I really dig his take on the Turtles & Splinter, I hope we get to see him tackle a cover or two before the series is done.

Yes, this is the typically the incentive assignment for the IDW RI covers.

Why do the make blank covers?

rich
11-12-2012, 11:15 AM
Why do the make blank covers?

Purely for sketching purposes. The idea is that you'd either buy the blank and have your favorite TMNT artist sketch on it or you'd buy it "pre-sketched" by Eastman (like the #1 RI D cover). Also, retailers sometimes make these RE blanks for upcoming in-store promotions like signings and planned artist visits.

dkram230
11-12-2012, 11:34 AM
Those blank covers are such a dilemma for me. I'll probably never have the opportunity for an artist to sketch them, but I'm trying to collect all variants so I still want them. Yet, I find it so hard to justify paying premium prices for a blank cover (like the $100 JP Annuals). Hopefully, since the blank JP cover of SHOTFC is limited to 250 copies instead of just 100, it will at least be 1/2 the price of the annual. But even that still seems way too high for retail price.

The IDW series seems to be holding up pretty well in value while the franchise is hot right now. But I wonder if 10 years from now nobody will care anymore and variants like the Jetpacks will be struggeling to sell on eBay with a $3.00 BIN!

Probably no one will care except collectors. It's hard to know for sure on price but it's a good bet they'll be extremely hard to come by with such a low print qty. Typically, harder to find = more rare. More rare = more $$.

As a long-time collector of the Turtle comics, the general rule of thumb I've noticed regarding new material is "Get it now because it's not cheap later".

Of course, that was when Mirage printed the books, now with IDW producing their comics in larger quantities, those books may slide down the slope in value over time. Thus far, a lot of the Mirage material can be had for around cover price, give or take a bit.

I pretty much go by the "Get it now" rule...partly because of price and partly because of scarcity in the future. But I know that not everyone is able to do that and some of these IDW covers are extremely expensive. I wasn't always able to go by that rule...during my college years I wasn't able to keep up with much and it took me years to track down some of the lower print run issues from that era. However, the internet has completely changed things from the way they were 10 or 15 years ago. It likely wouldn't take so long today.
