1.) They seen the Lost city of Alantis in one episode. When they see it again in a second episode, they act like it's their first time seeing it.

2.) When they meet "a" Phantam of the Opera the second time, they are shocked that a phantam really exist, even though a phantom appeared before.
(one was an alien and the other was human)

3.) In season 10, Donny doesn't believe in time travel even though he and his bros time traveled dozens of times.

When did he say that?

The Atlantis in the Euro eps is not the same one as Merdude's.

When did he say that?

I think it was Past Ralph that had a "yeah right" type look on his face when they were told about being dragged into the future.

That's my only gripe with the original cartoon... absolutely no continuity!

BTW, you forgot to mention the two times Leonardo got age-reversed into a toddler. The first time Michaelangelo shrank with him, the other time it was with Donatello and Raphael.

Are you being serious? There was lots of continuity in the old show.

Compared to what? Jeph said "none", which is an exaggeration. You said "lots", which is an exaggeration. I think you boys need a nap or a time-out or something.

Anyone who watched the show in its proper order knows there is plenty of continuity in the show. The locations of the Technodrome and its problems, the first introductions of many recurring characters, even past episodes or inventions are sometimes brought up again.

But like most 80's cartoons the show was episodic where you could watch it out of order and it doesn't matter too much. However if you do watch it in order you will notice continuity, even stuff as minor as the Turtles seeing the module's for the first time or Don showing his dimensional portal for the first time.

So, about 25 or 30 milestone episodes out of nearly 200 = "plenty of continuity"? I wouldn't call it that. And, what is this "proper order" you mentioned? Last I checked, no one knew and all projects to reorganize the show ran out of steam. As someone who has marathoned the original 'toon twice now, I know what I'm talking about. This show's continuity is 'flimsy' at best.

Exactly. The writers should've done a better job keeping tabs on each other's plots.

I don't think some of you know what continuity is. It doesn't mean a continuous plot that goes on through a season like modern shows, it makes there is a narrative where past events still happened and the characters remembered them.

That is a yes to most episodes.

Jester

You mean like the times the Turtles forget about the transport modules, after seeing them?

If there's such "continuity" then the things listed by the OP are "ret-cons."

They remembered the modules just fine. Its quite obvious Season 3 and 4 had lots of episodes all written at the same time to get nearly 40 eps out a year.

That's also why the animation quality went through various phases of highs and lows in those seasons, they were rushing them out due to the initial fad of the franchise.

1) this doesn't really have anything to do with whether there's a line of continuity or not.

2) this point CAN be used to strengthen the argument that the rush of episodes is one more reason that there ISN'T any continuity.

These episodes were all written at the same time by different writers. They weren't all aware of what the others were doing, and although there was a story editor who put it all together, the show was meant to be watched out of order so it didn't matter.

so what you're saying now is that continuity wasn't a priority? :-?

No, I am saying the show didn't have a season long arc, but it still had continuity. Granted it was about repowering the Technodrome too.

I think things like this only serve as proof positive that not even its own Powers That Be could stomach watching it through to guarantee continuity gaffes didn't creep in.

What do continuity gaffes in the Mirage universe mean, good sir?

Bottom line, there is continuity in the old show if you look for it when you watch the episodes in order.

To say the show has NO continuity is just plain wrong.

I kinda want to see Andrew attempt to have a conversation with CyberCubed about the cartoons. That'd be friggin hilarious!!!

I remember an ep where they're surprised to see a transport module even though by then they have seen them at least twice before already.

I also liked how whenever they mentioned some character they met before, THAT is the episode the character returns in. The only exception I think was when Lotus was mentioned in 'The Fifth Turtle' but she wasn't in it.

"TURTLE MANIAC" too. Probably a few more as well. There was an ep or two where Shredder was mentioned but not involved.

I LOVE the old toons... I know there are tons of plot holes, continuity mistakes, and other issues.. but its still so much fun... you just have to enjoy the episodes on their own sometimes and not worry about them contradicting previous episodes... Afterall when they wrote those episodes they were writing for kids who do not worry about this kind of thing... AND this was a time before owning copies at home was a common thing... Im sure the writers.. IF they knew they were doing it .. really didnt think they would be called on it... especially decades in the future.

No, its just that Season 3's early episodes were all written at the same time so each writer wasn't fully aware what the other was doing.

They just had the mandate, "The Technodrome is beneath the Earth's crust," and went from there.

Dirk Savage Mutant Hunter mentions the incident in the zoo when Groundchuck and Dirtbag were created. Having only seen that episode once at the time I assumed it was mistake mentioning when Bebop and Rocksteady's animals were kidnapped.

I've always noticed this too with the OS. It's like certain characters they don't remember meeting or certain things that happened they don't remember about either. Can't think of any good examples off the top of my head, but you guys did mention some already. But I agree there is actually continuity throughout the series. It's just not one of those shows....like say like Spiderman The Animated Series from the 90s, where you pretty much HAVE to watch the whole thing in order, because each season's a huge story arc. Who knows, maybe the turtles were smoking some greenage and forgot certain people/events, :P

I just remembered a good example of that. In the season 2 episode "Teenagers From Dimension X" the Neutrinos come back to Earth to save the Turtles from Shredder's scheme to wipe their minds. At one point April shows up to help and Kala asks her who she is, almost as if the Neutrinos don't remember meeting her the first time they were on Earth.

Yeah...I recently watched that ep and wondered how the Neutrinos and April don't seem to know one another. I always thought that was strange.

I also re-watched the OT recently and it has plenty of continuity and a surprising amount of it counting the era the show came from.

All shows have plenty of continuity errors including recent and continuity heavy shows like the DCAU, Avatar, etc.

Some episodes were clearly aired out of order which explains stuff like the first time they get their costumes or the first time they see the transport modules, you can actually see that in an earlier thread, that episode goes first since it's the first time they see the modules yet they were shown before with the turtles making absolutely no comment about them so it's clear they take place after.

Now the show is not continuity heavy but to say the show didn't have continuity is an outright lie, and we got plenty of continuity when compared to other cartoons at the time.

Not to mention we see an episode where April buys those bald head rubber masks for the Turtles for the first time, then they wear them regularly in the following episodes.

And then there's the Technodrome. There's so much subtle continuity there that you can easily overlook it.

Having just gone through the first six seasons I can't help but notice David Wise seems to do the best job keeping continuity within his episodes. For instance in "Donatello Trashes Slash" he remembered the name of the ship that Slash took off in.

Yes, I also noticed Usagi's episode is the first time Don shows his dimensional portal to the Turtles. The episode is also the first time General Traag appears since Season 1.

I can't remember for sure, but I think we only saw Rock Soldiers in Season 2 but not General Traag himself.
