just clicking around tumblr for tmnt stuff, and found these 2 posts interesting:

http://tugamaggie.tumblr.com/post/35077339161

http://pandasize.tumblr.com/post/35512624054/tmnt-2012-never-say-xever

it's clear that girls enjoy the show a lot, now that the turtles are more, I dunno, human? relatable?

...dare I say date-able?

AND doubly so because you can sense that there are girls that can project themselves onto April, and enjoy a connection with the turtles that way.

this reminds me again of that April sheet that Ciro Neil did. working wonders.

I doubt April's the main reason girls are digging this show. I personally (speaking as a female fan) can't stand the whole April/Don weird crush, and if I had to choose a reason why more girls may be getting into the show it'd likely be a mix of the fact that shows aren't nearly as gender inclusive as they used to be in general, and also the fact that the show is animated with a much cleaner, "prettier" style all around. Most girl cartoons tend to be pretty streamlined and pretty while boys have the harsher lines and colors. With the turtles animated in this way they don't feel so overbearingly stereotypical masculine which I think is inviting to younger girls to give it a chance.

The only girls I know who really think of the turtles as "date-able" are not new turtle fans and have thought of them as such for years.

Girls could also be enjoying the show because of all the anime effects.
Oh, and if you think the things on tumblr are bad, you should see the fan fics that little kids are posting on the Nick message board.

Nah, that's impossible. It's a Nick show designed for kids. If you're over a certain age and like it, you're weird.....

I have to admit, I much prefer relationships between the Ninja Turtles and other non-human characters like Michaelangelo's crush on Kala the Neutrino or Raphael with Mona Lisa. The April/Don thing is cute, but I don't wanna see it overdone.

So you're saying the next generation of Dromers are girls?

Joking aside, I'm glad the series is attracting new fans. I can tell you, and mind you it's only anecdotal evidence, that fans of the OT have ZERO knowledge of this new incarnation.

Dude, once upon a time atleast 80% of the fandom was comprised of women, but we drove them out of this place with our neaderthal behavior! Now they hang out at TMNT-L.

I always thought TMNT was dominated by male fans with perhaps a third of fandom female. Being four brothers and no females aside from the Oracle-like/damsel of non-romance April its probably hard for the ladies to find a charactr to drift towards. In Power Rangers there was the Pink and Yellow and thier endless replacements and Pok'emon had Misty and her successors and the Pok'emon themselves could find a neuter audience easier for obivious reasons. Its not like we can take a poll and get enough of a logical answer without a huge margain of error so let's just go with the idea that more guys than girls are TMNT fans.

As for these ladies at TMNT-L,why don't you two boys jsut use your charms to lure them back here?:twink:

Not really. I watched Transformers (despite the lack of a female character) and TMNT as a little girl in the late 80's/early 90's and my brother watched Care Bears and Smurfs. Whether it's a "boys or girls" cartoon isn't really a factor.

I'm sure boys of today's generation love MLP Friendship is Magic and Legend of Korra as much as girls love Adventure Time and Ben 10.

I don't know if this is about the crush or not. I'm glad more fans are getting involved in this series regardless of what it may be. I've been a fan since the '80's, and I have to say that I've never thought of the Turtles as potential "dates." I just liked the show itself.

I'm sure there are some girls that might latch onto the whole shipping thing, but most are probably interested in the show because it's enjoyable. The female fans are just going to be more noticeable now that geek culture has really exploded all over every part of the internet.

I also think it's also just the nature of Tumblr. I read a post on there the other day about the composition of the site being mainly shippers and hipsters and had to laugh at the truth of it. The Donnie/April thing really is a huge driving force of the fandom there though and Don is definitely the most favorite Turtle. It's been an interesting event to watch the progression of as the show has been on *laughs*

The OT was the same, but the 4 kids version was definitely the tip of the iceberg , I guess that is why it was a little hard to see the TMNT with such a different look, but they have proven to be not only adorable but their personalities are way better developed.

No way, Neville/Hermione all the way! Ron can have Luna or something. :P

I don't take shipping incredibly seriously like a lot of people do, but I am a fan for certain couples in fandoms I'm in though. I really don't think I've ever looked at TMNT quite that way though...no incarnation of the Casey/April thing has got me happy to see them together, it's just how it is, or something.

Heck, as much as I love the Donnie/April dynamic we're getting in this series, and how I kind of think it's not as 'disturbing' as some others find it...I'm...still not really sure I'd say I 'ship' it per say.

Actually I kinda dug the idea of Harry and Luna hooking up. I always thought they made a cute pair in the 5th and 6th films/books. Then again I tend to prefer what's canon in the books, especially when it comes to Ron and Hermione.

Shipping wars will happen regardless, and it's been happening in TMNT since 2K3 came out. I'm not surprised it may happen again with this new show, but that's the way it is.

Also, Harry/Ginny and Ron/Hermione FTW. I preferred Neville/Luna and I was sad to learn that Neville married Hannah Abbott and that Luna married Rolf Scamander. But I got over it in time though.

It's not like Donatello's just an animal. I mean, these mutants are more human than any non-human species in the world. Totally sentient. There's nothing that proceeds it to set any kind of standard.

And I just don't get the Ginny thing. It just came out of nowhere, and I don't understand why Harry likes her. I'm not saying he shouldn't like her. I literally mean that I don't understand it, because it wasn't fleshed out, like Harry/Cho or Ron/Hermoine. It just happened.

Exactly, that's the exact way I'm looking at it here. Honestly, I'd find it more disturbing to see one of the Turtles with a regular, non-sentient Turtle. Honestly, when you bring up any other kind of sentient being into the equation, sticking to a 'species' pretty much goes out the window.

That said, I don't think I'd ever be attracted to a 'furry' or anything, but since it's not something that exists in reality, who can say for sure. I begrudgingly admit that Cheetara in the new Thundercats show almost crosses that line though. <_< >_>

The Neville/Luna thing was pretty much movie only, but I do think they made a pretty cute couple.

And I never felt like Harry needed to end up with anyone.
But I don't accept things Rowling says outside of the books to be canon. For me to consider it true in that universe, it needs to be written in that universe. In a book. That's just how I roll.

I don't mind shippers/shipping; it's usually unavoidable, and I just see it as a part of a healthy fandom. When it gets obnoxious, I've just learned to ignore it. Just as long as the whole Donnie crush doesn't carry on for an ice age or turn all angst-ridden; I love Gargoyles, but the whole Elisa/Goliath thing should have been settled by the writers one way or another.

Also, has anybody thought of the possibility that Casey Jones might not end up a teen in this incarnation?

Not all female fans are shippers, and not all shippers are female.
Having said that, there was most certainly shipping going on during the OT days.

Mona Lisa/Raph, Ninjara/Raph, Mike/That Nutrino Chick, April...and pretty much everyone.
And those are just the het ships.

That you didn't hear about it speaks more about geek spaces and how unwelcoming they are to differing opinions on what is or isn't acceptable behavior.

It's not that there are more female geeks now, it's that we've found the internet is a good place to be geeky without having to deal with the fanboys.

Thought it would be interesting to note one of the bigger TMNT 2012 blogs on Tumblr held a "Which Turtle is the most popular" contest.

These are the results:

Final Totals:

Donnie - 30

I'm not really much of a Casey fan. I DO like Casey/April in the first movie, but the 2K3 and 2K7 film, they're just... there.

And while I DO appreciate Casey's friendship with Raph, I'm actually more afraid he'd mess up Raph and Leo's dynamic bromance that was built so well so far in the first season than a potential love triangle with April and Don.

i enjoyed their relationship in the 2k7 flick. it sorta had a feeling like they'd been together a while and needed a kick in the pants. it was a little bit of character development that was pulled off well imo.

Dear god, Donnie's the new Edward Cullen....

For that to be true, April would need to be a useless, lazy, passive wuss. As is, she's a headstrong girl with a sense of justice and street smarts. Thank goodness, too. I just cannot understand how Twilight is so popular with girls when it degrades women to such a grotesque extent. I even know of some tough, feminist types that like the series. I don't get it.

I digress, though. I want to declare, with no irony, that I applaud this pairing, and here's why. Nowadays, when I search for "Nickelodeon TMNT" on DeviantArt, a lot of what I get is Don X April art. Though it can get excessive, you know why I'm fine with it? Because before, when I just searched "TMNT," I got a lot of incestuous gay art of the Turtles, which for a long time caused me to stop searching. I know we'll never get rid of that completely, but if giving fangirls a canon ship, which lets them put themselves in with the turtles, can serve to lure them away from yaoi, I'm all for it.

Am I, myself, a diehard shipper? Not at all, but I can't say I'm really grossed-out at all, either. As has been said many times, the Turtles are more human than beast, and having crushes on girls is just something teenagers do. I wouldn't want this bit to dominate the show, but let's face it; it won't. They aren't pushing the "crush" issue any more than they're pushing most other things to emphasize that they're teens.

And, except for a very few heartwarming scenes (April getting angry that Donnie's brothers are laughing at him for example), the show usually treats Don's crush for laughs. I wasn't taking it seriously until The Gauntlet.

But the thing is Casey is Raph's bff because he's the only one who gets him and Raph can't connect properly with his other brothers. Leo especially, since he had the whole "favorite son" stigma sibling rivalry.

Nicks' Leo and Raph don't have that problem, in fact Leo listens to Raph/accepts him as the better fighter and Raph genuinely accepts Leo's leadership (by quoting Space Heroes, no less!), and both of these guys train together, play videogames together, loves fighting villains together.

I just wonder how on earth Casey fits into that.

Those whiny fangirls are already bashing Casey for interfering with their precious ship? These people are idiots, we don't even know what the Nick Casey will even be like yet.

These whiny 14 year old girls need to realize there's more than one TMNT universe and just because Casey and April were a pairing in other series doesn't mean you need to attack a character who hasn't even been introduced yet.

I can't speak for girls in large because I am a dude but I think a lot of it is much more acceptable these days for girls to be into shows like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles than it was back in the olden days of the comics and the 80's and 90's cartoon series.

The same thing is even starting to happen with the stigma of boys and men being into "girly" shows is being called into question, some of you here might be surprised how many teenage boys and men are becoming fans of My Little Pony Friendship is Magic yours truly being one of these fans. To those who wonder why the answer is the same one I give for why I am into Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, because it is a good show. I am just glad that new fans are being introduced to my favorite turtles, regardless of their gender.

@avatar yuffie: you're right about the relationships in the new show. obviously, the 2k7 movie was it's own thing and prolly wont affect the new show too much. im pretty confident the nick producers and writers will have a way to fit it all together and make it work within context of the new vibes of the nick show.

as for the shipping...hey, at least it shows there's people paying attention! its healthy, i think. and if its true that a lot of the shippers are young girls, then AWESOME! it means there's a whole lot of new fans who appreciate the show, much like the bronies. it's all good, imo, as it all equals more interest in the franchise!

I kinda can't wait to see everyone's reaction if Casey does turn out just to be a cameo character that drops in every now and then, with no real reason to hang or talk to April.

I would imagine many fans want to see their favorite hockey-themed vigilantee come back to bust some heads.... but I can't help but feel that most fans are just grossed out from the Don/April thing that they can't wait for Casey to come in and take April and 'set things right'.

I'm almost looking forward to see how people will react if Casey is a guest character that in no way affects the Don/April angle.

I just wonder how on earth Casey fits into that.

Because people can easily be close to their siblings and still have a best friend. You relate to everyone in different ways, yes Leo and Raph get along far better on the 2012 show but I still don't see Raph really wanting to go to Leo with his problems to talk about them, a role that Casey could easily fill.

Romantic relationships get much trickier when more people are involved. Honestly I am thoroughly enjoying meeting new fans, I was just mildly annoyed that people were attacking Casey for no reason. But maybe that's also because I have never really been a shipper and don't understand why people get so furious about it.

Actually, I really see Raph going to Leo and talk about his serious problems in the nick version. And Leo knows Raph (the way he taunted him that Raph was just a baby in Turtle Temper gave me "Ouchie" feels. I'm sure that really stung to Raph's as well), he certainly knows how to handle him. And unlike past Leo's, the current one was just as gung ho fighting criminals as Raph did, which is kinda Raph's past time with Casey in the other incarnations.

I dunno, I just can't see Casey fill that role Leonardo already cemented. So hopefully the writers can make a new spin of Raph's relationship with the guy.

I respectively disagree. We saw Raph threaten bodily harm to Mikey if he even mentioned to his brothers he was showing emotional support to him at the end of "New Friend's, Old Enemies". He at least to me still seems like kind of a harda** and not the type of guy that is going to be laying out his heart to his brothers very easily.

I still think there is room for Raph and Casey's relationship here. Raphael looks to Casey a lot of times as his escape from his brothers. When he needs to get out, be on his own and do his own thing.

Also I still really can't see Raph and Leo out "busting heads together". Raphael might have had to admit that Leo was right about showing mercy having benefited their family, but I still doubt he is going to be very forgiving to dirtbags later down the line and Leo is going to continue to be. I can't really see that paying out well with them patrolling together and it instead leading to more fights about tactics and extremes between them.

It's projection. If you're ever curious to see the psychology of shipping on full display, try the harmony podcast. Raph: And then we bust some heads?
Leo: And then we bust some heads.

They actually said that to each other.

Surprisingly Raph was the grounded guy when Leo gets himself all excited he finally fights human ninjas and chasing Dogpund with the patrol buggy (Leo finds it fun).

It's really bizarre. I'm still getting used to this dynamic.

You do realize how horribly sexist you're being, right? Of all the people that could be tied to those commercials, you are blaming the group that is least connected to their production, have no say on how the channel sells its ad space and has the least control over the commercial's content. I suggest you ask yourself why you feel the need to blame them, of all people.

A little bit of '/' is good in just about any series, as long as they don't end up carving each others initials into their skin, having children with magical properties or threatening suicide I don't see it as a bad thing.

And if shipping gets to much there is always the option to ignore it.

Personally I think 2k3 handled the Don/April thing well, the unspoken affection was quietly romantic.

I can't fathom how anyone could not find them (that pig especially) horribly obnoxious, but beyond that, I'm sick of them finding infinite ways to say the same old crap over and over again. Beating into people that they could save you money is essentially trying to distract you from the fact that they won't necessarily, and the truth is that if they didn't spend so damned much flaunting themselves, they could afford to save customers money more often. Geico is the ultimate affront to the sound advice that actions should speak louder than words. Insurance should be treated and promoted just as it is, with less noise and more hard details.

On that note. I hate every insurance company's ads except for All State's, because All State actually treats insurance as simple act of money-lending without any pretense, and describes their policies in detail.

God help me, I'm over 35, I've followed most of of their incarnations with devoted loyalty, even when continuity suffered or pretty much went out the window. I love comics and science fiction and fantasy. I think what's timeless about the story is the dynamic between the brothers.

I like the romantic twists. The Donatello/April thing to me is like a no sh*t moment, their mutants, not robots, they're bound to have feelings. Love, sex, and general romantic entanglements happen in life as in stories, not only adventure and comedy. These situations can shape characters into more interesting and complex versions of themselves and I think overall it makes for interesting developments along the way.

It's good that new fans are drawn in, whatever their gender, for whatever reasons. It helps the mythology endure!

Yeah, which is why I'm puzzled why romance is treated as a bad thing, as I've read rants about it in tumblr. The OT Turtles had crushes (admittedly a one time thing with various girls), Raph had a Japanese fox girlfriend and married a coyote in the Archie comics, heck even Mirage went that interspecies romance route with Leo and Radical. Don and April didn't feel out of the blue for me because 2k3 hinted that (and fanfiction lol).

I'm a lady, and I found it a little bit disturbing that female fans are suggested to be only drawn in by this foreign substance known as "romance", instead of all the many things we can like a series for.

There's nothing wrong with romance; in fact it's strange to me that a fundamental part of what makes us human is being boo-ed as something that corrupts this franchise. Romance can make for great conflict and character development, if handled properly.

But it's always just that One Thing that women are supposed to be interested in, and that's the problem.

Don/April doesn't do it for me, mostly because human/turtle is also disturbing, and the awkward way Donnie goes about making plans and having Freudian slips instead of outright telling April and asking her...it may be understandable, but it's not appealing.

I'm not going to try to play the "one of the boys" card, since I've been out of the Turtles loop for quite some time. I also don't do much stereotypical "fangirl" stuff, but that's not a thing of pride for me. It's just what I do.

But I do think it's better not to treat potential new female fans as only interested in one thing, something none of us others are into, but just to wait and see what they are and what they do.

Kinda agree there. They are human-like after all. Talking, walking, martial arts, acting like human teenagers, having crushes kinda comes with the 'being like a human' package. What can you do in a world run by humans without any other female mutants or other such creatures. Only kinda natural for them to have some crushes. Otherwise they feel like flat cartoon characters.

I don't know, it might be a bit extreme to say that it's the same thing as the old prejudices against racially different couples - but I think the sentiment is still the same, even though I'm sure nobody that's against the Donnie/April thing means it that way, at all.

To me, they're both sentient beings, so it's up to them what they do or don't do. If they want to end up as a couple in the show (not that I'm thinking they will, sadly), then I don't find it creepy in the slightest.

I'm actually more concerned about the karai situation. Don's relationship with april will probably go nowhere for comedy's sake, but as for L and K, well... I'm not saying something will happen but still.

Btw, to this day, the thing that weirded me out the most in the new series was raph calling karai 'hot'

I don't know, maybe they make the turtles have these crushes so kids can relate better to them?

I'm still trying to make up my mind about this whole interspecies relationships deal, but I guess I'll come around eventually.

There will always be turtlecest, don't worry.

Leo/Raph shippers love the Alien Agenda because it looks and feels like a love triangle.

I have a solution from what a counselor told me as a kid having nightmares. When I see a monster I'm afraid of every time I close my eyes, he said, just imagine the monster doing something funny, and that will cure it. So now, just imagine Leonardo and Raphael holding each other close, and then imagine Raph headbutting Leo and breaking free. Non-gay, non-incestuous, and in-character solution right there.
