View Full Version : Easter Egg Hunt

One of the more enjoyable aspects of this show is all the Easter Eggs in each episode. I thought it would be a good idea to make a thread where we can collect them.
So, if you find an Easter Egg, drop it in this basket.

Obvious references to past TMNT incarnations:
1. Mike's 80's toon face was shown when he joked about getting a tattoo on his face.
2. Mikey saying, "That was us!" during the origin tale in episode 1 was a throwback to his Movie 1 line.
3. Don asking, "Is that the Shredder?" followed by Raph's, "Well its definitely A Shredder," felt like a 2k3 reference of there being multiple Shredders.
4. The Kraang have their name inspired by Krang himself.

I love the idea of this thread... Some of these are not so much easter eggs and just bits of trivia.

The Shop owner that April tricks information out of by pretending to be undercover is actually located just a block away from her father's shop... because we can see it on the next street over.
http://img339.imageshack.us/img339/470/tidalwavefreshfish.jpg
if I remember correctly in one of the episodes we can see Shredder looking out his window and there seems to be buildings with the same decorative windows as the building as April's neighborhood.. indicating Shredder is probably operating nearby.

You know good and well them referring to Shredder as, "a" Shredder, when that has never been done before in any other series, felt like a reference. There probably won't be any other Shredders in the Nick show, so it felt like a reference to me.
He meant a shredder referring to all the metal and blades he was wearing. He who shreds. Stop reaching.

This thread reminds me of the "Pop Culture References" section of the attempt to reference thread on the OT forum.
Well, my contribution to this thread is that on the episode "Metalhead", after Donatello suggests to play the video game Combat (an Atari game from 1977), sounds heard include those from the game Asteroids.

I'm not sure if this counts as an Easter Egg, considering it's dialog and may be a reference to the OTS but,
in the episode The Turtle Terminator, when Rocksteady and Bebop kidnap Irma, and bring her to the warehouse where she sees Shredder and and The Turtle Terminator is activated by Shredder to copy Irma, as The Turtle Terminator approaches her, Irma says "look fellows, I'm not into heavy metal!"
In the episode Metalhead, when Metalhead and April are on the rooftop, Donnie asks through Metalhead (to break the awkwardness of starting at her and saying out loud how beautiful she is) he asks :laughs: "so you like heavy metal ?"

But what are the chances of the Nick writers actually reading through a comic based on a cartoon from 20 years ago? They may have checked out a few random issues here and there, I doubt they read through it all.
The TMNT universe is huge now. They probably read through a lot of the Mirage material, and watched many episodes of both the original toon and 4kids series, and probably seen all the movies, but other than that I'm sure they didn't read everything.
How can you be sure about that? Have you asked them ? Anyway i am proud to say that i am one of the few people who have read all Mirrage comics all Archie comics watched all episodes of OT and 2003 cartoon have watched the 13 episodes of Nick cartoon and have read all IDW comics that have been released right now. I have also watched all movies. Now you know it because i told you. But if i didnt told you then how would you know that i have read and wathced all versions of TMNT?

if I remember correctly in one of the episodes we can see Shredder looking out his window and there seems to be buildings with the same decorative windows as the building as April's neighborhood.. indicating Shredder is probably operating nearby.

I HAVE ASKED THEM! .... i'm serious, they were at a panel at London Exspo con, in London, last may, before the premiere of the show to promote the show.
And I am happy to inform that the creators of the show are huge fan-boys of the turtles.
And I mean enourmus! these dudes grew up with the eighties show, and loves it. They sounded as nothing but over-excited fan-boys at that panel. All what they said can pretty much be summed up in the following sentence;
"OMG WE ARE MAKING AN ACTUAL TURTLE SHOW! can you believe it? a real turtle show! this is so amazing! Our show is going to be so amazing! I LOVE MY JOB!" end quote.
So no.. having to go through old turtles material is not a chore for these people, it's pure enjoyment. Believe me, you do not doubt these people when you have heard the sheer glee in their voices over the turtles as a franchise. Those people are over existed fan-boys themselves, whom all-ready knew all turtle history even before they knew they were going to make any turtle show.
It's pretty amazing to think that the turtles are now old enough that people whom grew up with the old stuff and remembers it from their childhood now are old enough to make new material of their own, isn't it?
And that passion can be felt in the show, at least I feel it can. It's just so existed about itself and its own existence.

pretty cool that in the last ep, the same comic featuring a "mutagen man" (that Powder pointed out in the 2nd post of this thread) showed up again when Mikey talked about using it as a weapon. (The scene can be seen above in snakeweed's current sig). A nice foreshadowing to the real mutagen man making his debut later in the episode.

ok yeah so obviously Chris Bradford is based on Chuck Norris, and could Baxter Stockman be based on this guy?
...I remember him in Superman 3 some sort of comic relief bad guy computer genius which is pretty much what Baxter is in this series. Definitely the one who came to mind when i saw Baxter for the first time! :)

And I by "fuss," I mean that literally.
Just watch it on Netflix. No need to open your DVD.

This guy, lol. You mean one of, if not the, most famous comedians ever? That's Richard Pryor, and superman 3 is probably the worst representation of him. I doubt he's based on him, unless Baxter starts doing a lot of blow and sets himself on fire in season 2...

Awww snap! That's cool! I can't afford to buy any of the Lego TMNT sets right now, but if they made a Lego Turtle Blimp, or started producing sets based off other incarnations of the Turtles, I would probably have to pony up the dough and pick them up!

April wearing a yellow shirt is probably a nod to the OT, while the red hair is due to it being her standard hair color in animation now.
Just be thankful April never had curly black hair like in the early mirage comics in the shows.
She had a tendency to look little african american in those days. I remember there was a rumor going around that April's design was base on one of the creator's girlfriend at the time.

I'm surprised no one mentioned this one. At the end of "Monkey Brains", Raph was reading a comic that had the new version of the exposed "Rat King", showing you what Dr. Falco would become.

Not sure if this means anything, but it seems too specific not to be a reference to something. In the finale all of the turtles had a different number on the back of their flying suits but I can't figure out the reason why, if any. Anybody have a guess?
Don - 3
Raph - 9
Mike - 7
Leo - 5
(Even though Leo's is never shown, you can see Don working on a "5" earlier on, so I assume that one's his.)

Upon watching "Turtle Temper" a second time, I caught what sounds like a nod to Du Prez's score from the original movie while Leo, Don and Mike are infiltrating the warehouse.
Perhaps not a true Easter Egg, but as a fan of the original movie, which I have seen numerous time (as you all have also) I thought it was neat to hear, what sounds like a portion of one of the score tracks during the BGM.
Sounds like the song that plays when the Turtles return home from the farm. I know it's used more often than that but that's the most clear example I can think of from the source.

Oh yeah, good call! Didn't think about that. :D
Here's another possible one - in the finale Splinter's staff broke, revealing a hidden sword inside. I was watching with a friend and he pointed out that the OT Splinter Playmates toy did the same thing - a small sword would pull out of his staff. I don't remember if it was that way in the actual 'toon, but I don't think it was. I just remember him fighting with the stick. :ohwell:
