Alright... we here in the US finally emerged from the cloud of tryptophan, and now everyone's ready for the newest episode!

So, the boys have been knocked down a couple pegs after getting their tails handed to them by Shredder. After last week, I'm sure the boys spent the time licking their wounds and wondering what to do now with their new nemeses...

They now have a scarred and disfigured psychopath in bladed armor, a giant dog man and a nasty looking Snakehead fish-man. All trying to destroy the turtles in some sort of warped vengeance from events decades ago... what a nasty, gnarled mess they've become. The more I read about the species that Xever's turned into, the more I dislike him (those fish are NASTY lil buggers...).

So this week, our newly mutated Bradford has come up with another idea to get the boys exterminated once and for all - poisoning the sewers with dangerous chemicals. Obviously, the boys are going to do their darnedest to stop him from doing this - but you have to wonder, will they actually succeed?

Mind you, in the TMNT series from 2K3, their long-time lair was annihilated by the mousers in just the first episode. Nothing states that they couldn't lose their current lair, at least for a little while...

So,

WILL BRADFORD DRIVE THE TURTLES OUT OF THE SEWERS?
WILL APRIL GET ANY CLOSER TO FINDING HER DAD AGAIN?
WILL WE FIND MORE ABOUT SPLINTER AND SHREDDER'S PAST??

Stay Tuned!!!

One thing I am curiousabout is will the world notice that their analog of Chuck Norris is missing or learn he has a secret darkside that lead to him accidently during into a dog-man? Considering his public persona it has to be touched on! It have an interesting fallout.

No sooner do they emerge from the sewers Dogpound is waiting for them.Mike recognizes him right off.Did the turtles know it was mutagen that hit him and Xever or what they mutated into?

April's finally showing off some of her ninja skills! BTW, Leo WOULD have Captain Ryan as his icon on the t-phone XD. Also, we got to see spike some more! :) Dogpound really is huge, and he looks awesome. The question is, when is Fishface going to get his robotic legs?

That nightmare was pretty dark Splinter had. Poor guy is so stressed about their near death at the hands of the Shredder. I like how the Turtles are scared after being wrecked. Holy cow Dogpound is huge!!! Turtles are so stressed ans scared that they failed their first fight vs Dogpound. Also loved how Leo's pic on her cell phone was a pic of the Space heroes captain lol. Now we know April goes to Roosevelt High School.

Good episode. And Bradford/Dogpound is still a hard opponent for them. Fishface I don't think has his legs yet but we did get to see him swimming in the water in Shredder's lair. I wonder if Shredder is going to hook up with Stockman and get the legs built for Fishface.

Pretty good show today, and what makes it really enjoyable is not only the long fight with Dogpound, but the buggy that allows the Turtles to have a nice chase scene that eventually results in the Turtles' first victory against Dogpound. April is also kidnapped for the second time in this series, and the reference by Don "I hear the sewers in Florida are nice this time of year" is a pure OT throwback, as are the grappling hooks. Maybe the fact that it was ineffective was a nod that it was what caused the OT to go downhill?

April also sees Shredder for the first time, and we see that she goes to Roosevelt High School. That dream at the start of the episode fooled me, since I thought it just picked up from the last episode after the Turtles' first encounter with Shredder. I also find it weird that the credits ended a minute before the episode was over, and Space Heroes has really become a show within a show.

Overall: 8/10

I wonder how/when Shredder will team up with the Kraang. I really want to see Fishface in action, but that's not going to happen until He gets the technology (legs and water supply) to walk on land and fight the turtles. The next episode is called "Mousers Attack!" so Stockman will probably be in it, and maybe HE will build the legs for Fishface.

Oh hey Mirage Splinter... didn't think I'd run into you here.

Seriously though what a great way to start off the episode giving us a glimpse of the not so loving Splinter, but instead the one that found himself mutated with four baby turtles and decided to dedicate their existence to the sole purpose of killing his most hated enemy Oroku Saki. It translated very well onto the screen and it was nice finally seeing that side of Splinter in one of the cartoons.

Dogpound has a great design, I especially like that his bones seem to he exposed on his right hand, creepy stuff right there. Plus he's no Bebop or Rocksteady, it took a friggin' explosion to finally send him packing and I think that is how he should have explained it to Shredder, shame he's such a good dog or maybe he would have been more comfortable massaging the truth a little bit.

I loved the shot of Fishface just chilling in the pool and that Xever didn't immediately get his Robot legs and Breathing apparatus, it somehow makes this world full of Mutants and Ninjas and Mutant Ninja more realistic to me. Plus having hims stuck in the pool gave us an awesome look of what Dogpound is capable of on his own.

I so want the toys of the Patrol Buggies now after seieng them in action. What will definitely clench the deal for me is if they include Turtles with their respective headgear. Seriously Leo in that Baseball helmet looked awesome as did Football Raph and Hockey Don... Though where Mike found an aviator helmet kind of boggles my mind. I like that the first vehicle that we saw Donatello build was something that it would make sense for a Teenager to build as I know I for one had build a crappy little Go-Kart by the time i was fifteen, certainly feel like it will make it more logical when he builds the Shellraiser.

Loved the message about not pysching yourself out but still knowing how to maintain caution. Though my favorite part of the episode was when my long held belief that Raphael actually enjoys Space Heroes was confirmed when he was able to quote it back to Leo when he needed it the most. Though like Raph I too am upset that Leo didn't slap himself...

In closing how about April's student ID from Roosevelt High School... I'm sure Donnie is glad that she grew into her looks. Oh yeah and the Thermal Charge great throwback to issue numero uno

So, are Spider Bytez and Snakeweed ever going to return? We saw that Snakeweed was still alive, and Spider Bytez was saying that it wasn't over and that he'd be back. Also, they just let that Monkey run loose in New York City. How does no one notice giant Plant Monsters, Huge Spiders, and Mutant Cyborg Monkeys running around?

I admit the excessive mutants are getting tiring, and we still have Leatherhead coming 2 episodes from now who is huge like Dogpound and aquatic like Fishface.

Ah... you shouldn't give in so easily.

Dog Pound is probably stronger than Shredder by the fact that he's a giant mutant dog man.

Its just that he's so loyal to him in such a way that he's submits to his will...that and Shredder is a crime lord.

I see it as this, you hurt Shredder or bump him off, and you don't know what kind of crazy guys are going to come after you.

Thought it was an alright epsiode.

Love to see leo do his leader thing and seeing how April is ever so crafty and guile.

I enjoyed seeing Bradford as this hulking mutant, that the Turtles barely defeated if not for mental ingenuity.

I only wish we got to see Shredder come to terms with Bradford and Xever's new forms as well as how they are adjusting. Bradford didn't seem to be complaining, so is he the first post-mutant that doesn't blame the Turtles and readily accepts his mutation?

I guess I missed Xever in the background. I didn't see him at all. I'll have to watch again.

That's what I've always found fascinating about the fandom, as it seems really divided on mutants, whether there should be any others besides the Turtles and Splinter, or others, as myself, who seem to love more.

I remember ten years ago, I was barely sixteen, and so many members hated the "over saturation of mutants on the OT" which I could never understand because in my mind, who doesn't want more mutants?

Personally, I love the route they are taking with this show. My only complaint is some of the designs (SpiderBytez) and the lack of development (Rockwell, Pigeon Pete) As long as the writers don't drop characters and plot points such as Snakeweed, Rockwell and Pete I have no reason to fear more mutants. Isn't the Kraang still trying to perfect the Mutagen, so I don't see the writers dropping the "more mutants" angle anytime soon.

I've really enjoyed getting to know Bradford and Xever before they were mutated, it reminded me how the writers handled Eddie Brock/Venom in the 90's Spider-Man cartoon.

This incarnation has really impressed me with how it's dealt with arcs, characters and plots, the writers seem to have a plan and I can't wait to meet new characters as well as old favorites re imagined.

Kevin G

I'm curious also as to when Shredder will work with The Kraang. I'm thinking maybe the Kraang will give Xever aka Fishface his robotic legs. I don't think Shredder would have the patience to deal with the Kraang repeating a word in every sentence though lol.

While I loved Panic in the Sewers, I was wondering why Shredder wasn't curious as to know what was it that made Chris Bradford and Xever mutate. I actually thought this episode was going to have Shredder meet the Kraang (and maybe I'm the only one, but I actually thought "the meeting" was going to be with Shredder and the Kraang).

I love Clancy Brown. While I thought he did an amazing job voicing Chris Bradford, I loved his portrayal as Dogpound. Then again, Clancy Brown does an amazing job in anything he does.

Question though and maybe it has already been answered, Michelangelo said while they were fighting Dogpound that he keeps getting bigger, does that mean Dogpound as the ability to grow ? He's already huge.

I love April in this new incarnation. While Ciro foreshadowed that she will always be "the girl in the yellow jumpsuit", I can see her using her tactics trying to get a scoop/story if they go that route. If not I'm still satisfied with the way they are portraying her.

Another well done episode.

I'm fairly sure "he's getting bigger" was Mikey's way of saying Bradford was getting closer, hence looking bigger because of how perspective works.

Nothing's wrong with more mutants. The problem is that they're not being handled well enough.

I agree in the case of Vic/SpiderBytez. In terms of his design, there was no reason he couldn't be an alien spider that the Kraang brought along. It would suit him better actually.

I will reserve judgment on Snakeweed, Rockwell and Pigeon Pete, dependent on what the writers do with them. But honestly, I could have done without either Rockwell or Pete.

Scary Splinter is scary (to the point Raph is intimidated by him). I think this is the first time this side of him showed up in an animated adaptation.

The Go Karts are awesome. Too bad it seems to be a one shot.

And yes, headcanon that Raph likes Space Heroes is realized. It's touching he uses this to help Leo.

The "mutant of the week" thing is a toy sell, I'm sure. They're loading us up on characters so they can sell as much as they can before Christmas. Honestly I'm surprised we got our first vehicle today. Pretty sure we'll see the Shellraiser in the next episode or two, it's already been on shelves for a while.

Cramming in all these new characters reeks of production involvement to me. A lot of times decisions like this come down from the suits at Nick or Viacom and the writers just have to work with it. Not that it's necessarily a bad thing (I actually like all of the mutants so far, myself) but it's an obvious marketing ploy to me. TMNT has always been about the toys.

But it's cool, it's one of the staples of this show. I think things will calm down after the holidays though, and we'll start to see some of these mutants return.

Oh yeah! Great episode though. Really like Dogpound's design, especially his size. The dream sequence at the beginning was rad. I can't wait to watch it again. :D

I watched the ep with my girl today and the thing she noticed after it was done was.... 'Michealangelo is an idiot. And he's completely useless'.

I have to agree because at least in this episode.... he seemed like a waste of space. I felt the water balloon thing was just to give him something to do. It felt forced, like they just HAD to give him something silly to do. The ad was even all about Mikey's water balloons and nothing to do with Shredder and Dogpound.

Great episode... Dogpound was a s#!t ton cooler than I thought he was going to be.. Its too bad his toy doesn't do him justice..

That said.. Those of you wondering why he listens to shredder.. You forget shredder has said he was the one who trained Bradford so shredder already know all his tricks and sure dogpound could probably beat him arm wrestling there is no way he could match shredders speed, skill, or experience, shredder would certainly have the skills to work around dogpounds advantages if not turn them against him.. An like mentioned by others shreds still has a loyal army backing his every whim.

Also I think it would be more likely that fishface's new kicks come from Baxter instead of the kraang or at least reverse engineered by baxter from kraang tech.. At least that is how I would handle it...

For those still reading this far in this long post.. I typed it all on my phone on the toilet... See literacy has its rewards..... Ok I'm just kidding I'm actually on the couch watching tmnt 2 with my son.

Shredder would most likely cut his arm off before he could land a punch...

As for Mikey, yeah I forgot about the scene at the end... but still, the water balloon thing was kinda dumb. And it was actually Leo that pointed out that the water balloon would help, Mikey was gonna waste it and throw it at Leo despite all the serious stuff going on at the time. They could have find some way to make him useful than just being a constant annoyance. He's becoming lot like 2K3 Mikey....

Pretty good episode I think. My only complain is having Dogpound run around the city unnoticed. Not a big horror movie guy but was the Shredder claws on the wall a reference to Nightmare on Elm Street? I think I remember that scene from the movie.

As for excessive mutants, I don't care for Snakeweed or Spiderbytes or pidgeon pete, their designs are pretty generic. I like th other ones and while I would've like to have Bradford/Xever a while longer, I actually like their mutant forms. I do hope we don't get a ton of mutants which seems like it'll continue happening. If we do I hope they're more iconic unlike Spiderbytes/snakeweed. But even when the OT started doing more frequent mutations in Season 5 it did start to get tiring and I like mutations but there has to be a break between them. As far as ToonZone, who cares, they are far from the demographic or have any actual impact with their opinion, this was a solid episode unlike other episodes they praised.

Just to clarify, the scene where Shredder uses his claw on the wall as he gets closer to Leonardo is from the original 1984 A Nightmare On Elm Street where Freddy Krueger scrapes his knifes (on his gloves) against a wall as he approaches Tina in her dream. It became his signature since he also did in the other sequels and I believe the remake.

This was also used in other horror films such as The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 and Hellrasier.

Chop Top uses a wire hanger against a wall as he approaches Stretch in TCM 2 and The Female Cenobite in Hellrasier uses a knife across a wall as she approaches Kristy up the stairs (which is one of my favorite scenes because blood stars to pour from the wall as she continues to uses the knife against it).

I'm not sure if anyone else notices, but this incarnations references a lot of horror movies.

Today's episode was, as Mikey would put it, AWESOME! Was great to see a good amount of Bradford/Dogpound post-mutation. Was interesting to see exactly how big he is compared to the Turtles. He kinda looked like the Hulk fighting them, lol. I like that they had his voice change a bit, but without changing the voice actor. Was nice to get a glimpse of Xever/Fishface post-mutation. Kind of convenient that Shredder's lair would have a pool. Since the next episode will be featuring Baxter Stockman, I wonder if Fishface will be gaining his legs and breather pack soon. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing more of Shredder's mutant goons, the Rocksteady and Bebop of this take on the Turtles.

Splinter's nightmare at the beginning of the episode was interesting. Up until the point where they show that it was Splinter dreaming, I went from thinking they were showing us a bit of the future, to Shredder having a dream, to Splinter having a nightmare (shoulda stopped there), to finally thinking that it was Leo having the nightmare (him being the last one standing made me think that).

The Turtles themselves, and their interactions with each other and others, is really getting interesting. Especially with them coping in their different ways. Leo watches Space Heroes and trains, Raph goes to Spike (btw, it was nice to see Spike be a little more...active for once), Donny builds things (was good to see their first vehicle), and Mikey has some fun.

I'm really loving this take on Splinter. He's definitely got the father trying to protect his four sons down pat. I'm hoping we actually get to see him training April sometime, rather than hearing about it. Would be interesting to see how he trains someone so new to the art. I'm really looking forward to seeing where they take him. Especially with some of the inevitable emotional turmoil ahead.

Already looking forward to next week's episode, "Mousers Attack!". Should be interesting to see Stockman again, and to see what all he's been up to since the Turtles left him in the trash.

Solid episode, though not as good as last week's. Loved Mikey's water balloon mischief as well as Raph quoting Space Heroes. That cracked me up. I felt sorry for Splinter, but I'm glad he apologized and admitted his mistake in being so obsessive. It was interesting to see Leo be obsessed a little as well. Dogpound was huge, and I can't wait to see Fishface in action, too. I was glad April had more of a role this time and that she wanted to use her skills a bit more. Overall, a pretty good episode. Can't wait for next week.

Fave quotes:

Raph: I can't believe I"m gonna say this. 'Get yourself together, Captain. You are our leader, so act like it.'
Leo: You're right, Raph. That was just the Anxiety Ray talking.
Raph: What, you're not gonna slap yourself?

Leo: What did Donnie say about the chemical? Mikey, use the water balloon.
Mikey: What water balloon?
Leo: The water balloon you were going to hit me with.
Mikey: *looks behind his back* Dude, you're good.

Leo: We all deal with stress in different ways, Mikey.
Don: This is my way of dealing with stress.
Mikey: And this is mine. *throws water balloon at Leo who ducks as the balloon hits Donnie*

Splinter: There will be no training today unless Michelangelo throws that water balloon.

I remember ten years ago, I was barely sixteen, and so many members hated the "over saturation of mutants on the OT" which I could never understand because in my mind, who doesn't want more mutants?

The original idea behind that is that the TMNT and Splinter would be more special with less mutants. But this has never worked in any TMNT universe. Of course, we want more mutants, as long as mutants on Earth have to hind from most humans (except their friends/allies).

And most episodes of the 1987 show aren't based on mutants, but Krang and Shredder sending Bebop and Rocksteady breaking into power stations for Technodrome fuel.

Originally I was going to record this episode and watch it today because some friends and I were gonna go to the art museum in Philadelphia, but at the last minute we decided to just do lunch, so I was able to catch the episode as it premiered.

I have to say I really dug the fight scene with Dog Pound and the Turtles, and I especially loved Michelangelo's explanation for coming up with Bradford's new nickname. Kinda makes me wonder though why he still uses "Rad Brad" since it was originally meant as a term of endearment.

I liked this episode. It was a nice change of pace after the brutality of the last one. I think Mikey rocks! It was so absurd at the end with Dogpound and the Shredder, and I kinda felt bad for Dogpound when Shredder slashed one of his bone protrusions. Also, Dogpound is huge! I love how he is more than ever a physical match that takes a explosion to defeat. Reminded me a little of Tokka and Rahzar in the second film.

Yeah I dunno why he still is calling him Rad Brad. Maybe reminiscing..?

Decent episode with a good plot. I like how they show the good ol' April-tude, in that, she's always sticking her neck out for the turtles and in the process, getting herself into trouble. Both the OS April and this new teen April have that wreckless attitude. Tho I noticed this April has interesting tactics to infiltrate the enemies....pizza delivery.

I sorta look at DogPound as I do Hun from the 2k3 series. As in, why would he take orders from Shredder? He's twice his size! But I guess Shredder is more powerful and has the Foot.

Splinter shows his weakness: fear. Was in interesting take on his character. I liked it.

Good ep! The chase sequence was really sweet. Total toy potential there with the patrol buggies, assuming plans weren't already in the works.

I'm kinda bothered by Shredder at this point. He's like, "guys, I'm such a badass" and he threatens Bradford and Xever every time they screw up, yet he never actually does anything to punish them physically. 2k3 Shredder was awesome for that reason - I mean, just look at what he did to Baxter.

@demonsweat: Thank you :) I'm very surprised that no one made a thread that consists of all the horror film references and nods.

Cassandra Peterson aka Elvira is confirmed to voice a female Kraang.

Jeffery Combs voiced Dr. Victor Falco a deranged scientist, while Combs is best known for playing Dr. Herbert West in the 1985 film Re-Animator who was also a deranged scientist. In fact in the scenes where he holds the syringe is nod to the character who is usually seen holding a syringe with green liquid in it.

In the episode Old Friend, Old Enemy, where the Foot Soldiers are hung from the pipes in the sewers, the way they were hung (or the scene in general) is like from the 1974 film The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, where Leatherface hangs Pam on a meat hook and also in the 2010 remake A Nightmare On Elm Street, Freddy Krueger hangs his victims (Dean and Kris) on pipes in the boiler room.

Almost all the magazine's Raph reads is mostly horror/science fiction. I'm not sure (since it was never cleared) if Ciro reads or is a fan of Fangoria or HorrorHound or possibly Monster magazine.

Shredder does have some Freddy Krueger characteristics to him (he is also burnt) obviously minus the puns. I forgot who on here said this, but he (or she) who went to Nickelodeon studios to hear about the 2012 incarnation said that this Shredder has a scary vibe to him like Freddy Krueger.

It's funny. I think I've always related to Michelangelo, because I'm laid back and not very driven, at times. Now it's like I share something else with him. I say he's distracted and doesn't think before he speaks because I tend to do the same thing.

I often ask questions before I even stop to think them through. Mikey and I are the kind of people who would open the fridge and yell, "Where's the ketchup," having not even looked past the front row of items. We would ask "Why?" or "So what?" immediately, though with two seconds of thought, we would've figured it out.

I don't think that when Mikey readied his water balloon, he was thinking, "Oh, it's just a battle to save the sewer and Splinter, I can fit in a water balloon toss at Leo." I think he thought, "Leo's back is turned. Water balloon," and all consideration of the major situation just slipped his mind.

Wow, yeah. Didn't even put it together that Shredder was burnt too, on top of it. I did think of Fangoria though with the mags. Or some of those old House of Mystery comics; I think they're a little closer to those. If I had to guess, I'd say it's because the creators all grew up in that time, which was a golden age for horror. I wouldn't be surprised if we see more 80s/early 90s movie references in general (like the Karate Kid stuff on Bradford's magazine).

And... I love this Mikey too. :D Stupid is too harsh a word. He's impulsive for sure, naive maybe - but the guy is just a kid. I think some of his jokes, while pretty silly, are occasionally witty. I never liked either version of him in the past because the jokes were so bad. I've been waiting for years for someone to write decent comedy for the character.

Actually, Shredder uses his steel claws to cut off a piece of Dogpound's claw/spike on his back.Forgot to mention that in my post for some reason, but my feeling was that it was totally underwhelming and lame. That's like cutting off a bit of someone's hair, where's the lesson in pain there?

I realize this is a kid's show and it can't go too far in a dark direction, but the 2k3 show did it extremely well with Baxter. I was hoping Dogpound would have lost half an ear or something - that would have made a point.

Well, we still have many episodes to go. I have a feeling this won't be the first time Dogpound comes back with his tail between his legs. :D I'm with ya though, I'd like the Shredder make good on some of these threats eventually.

true, but Shredder only killed that one Purple Dragon and kept tormenting Baxter in the 2K3 show. Even when Hun kept failing over and over again, the worst he ever got was being forced to shovel stuff or whatever in the Foot dungeun or whatever that was. He never got any actual damage done to him, nor was Shredder seen punishing or killing any other Purple Dragons or Foot Ninjas.

I doubt we'll see Bradford lose a limb due to his action figure not looking as such.... they should have at least have him take his anger out on random nameless Foot Ninjas and Purple Dragons.

Interesting enough this was written by the same guy who did, "Turtle Temper," which is considered by many to be the weakest episode of the series thus far.

This episode was better than "Turtle Temper," but I think this writer may not be as good as the others.

"We get it..."

Or...Maybe Raph will call him "Fish Face" getting Mikey bent out of shape. I could see Raph snarling, "You're goin' down, Fish Face!" or something along those lines. Then again maybe Mikey will like it and run with it.

It would have to be. In the OT Yoshi was nicknames "Splinter" by the Turtles. In Mirage/4kids/Movies he was named Splinter by Yoshi.

However in this universe he had to get the Splinter name from somewhere other than the Turtles. It already being a codename for him when he was human makes sense.

Another nice and funny chapter!!!!

My prefers:

Splinter´s nightmare....at same time we see Splinter´s fear and Leo´s fear and of course I voted the first option at poll!!!
""No Patrol, No Games, No rest.. There is only Training. Starting NOW! ""

How every brother deal with stress: Mike playing jokes with water ballons, Leo training, Raph spreding his anger in the first brother on agree!, and Don working machines!!!! Awesome! :tgrin:

So funny all the water ballons joke/game for me!!!! :tgrin: As Leo stunned said at the end..... WHERE Mikey keep hide the water-ballons!!????:lol::lol: Adorable Mikey!!!!!

Nice to meet Dog-henchman! also the small shoot of Xever in the pond!
If Leo were slapped himself I think I could fall rolling &laughing on the floor!!!

Also I enjoy the Go-Karts...I mean !!! The bugy-patrols! I presume those will be a nice set of toys!!!!!!!

Jut a few questions ...
Any easter egg on the number of the van with acid??? I think it was showed so clear! Any meaning or just casualty???

What kind of hats were using the boys on the Go-karts? Mikey was a pilot one...Raph I think its maybe Hockey? And Leo and Don???

Thanks in advance!!

As for Splinter being terrifying in that episode, the show did point out that Splinter apparently had a terrible temper (its what caused the rift between him and Shredder to worsen), so it's actually interesting to see that dark side in him show up.

I was actually sympathetic because that dream sequence at the start of the episode was horrifying, and Splinter unfortunately had to let it out on the boys.

I never liked it, but it seems to be taken to an excess in this show. I always hated how Raph hit Mikey in 4kids, but he seemed less alpha-dominant in that show, at least compared to Don. In this show I really get the impression Don and Mikey don't want to fight back because they'd get their asses handed to them. I find it disturbing that there would be fear like this in a family in a kids' show. It happens a lot in this show! As in, a couple times an episode. It's really annoying and teaches bad lessons--in Splinter's case, about disciplining, and in Raph's case, about dealing with people who say annoying things.

Also, Splinter took the role Leo did in season 4 in 2K3 (and fortunately Splinter backed off and apologized for his behavior at the end).

Leo was surprisingly mature during the whole time, which is why I really like this episode. He had to put up with the stress his father and his brothers are in for weeks.

You must not have ever experienced actual siblings interacting and living with eachother. You're overreacting quite a bit, it's not that serious.

Also, should every show be pink and fluffy and cute with no arguments whatsoever to present a good message to kids?

I do have a brother, we did fight, we stopped under age 10, and when we did my parents would remind us that violence wasn't acceptable between family members. When I got spanked I found it unjust and disproportionate to my behaviour (physical violence is almost always disproportionate vs. words, in my opinion), and it just triggered feelings of rage and vengeance in me as a little kid, instead of actually teaching any valuable lessons about working out problems or even about dealing with idiotic behaviour. Obviously the Turtles can argue all they want but I don't like the bullying. And Splinter... well he's an interesting case because I think his violence would be inexcusable in a father, but it's borderline in a sensei. At any rate, I really wish it didn't have to happen multiple times per episode.

I don't know if I am overreacting... I feel like in 4kids, when Raph would whack Mikey, it was like... brushed off because Raph had less power and Mikey could have fought back better. Here Raph is obviously much more physically powerful and it seems like he has more relational power since he's more of a second-in-command to Leo than he was in 4kids. I acknowledge that Mikey is possibly even dumber in this show than in 4kids though.

It's just really getting to me--it's happening too many times per episode in my mind, without consequence. I know the world isn't all fluffy rainbows or whatever, but it would be nice if people tried to make it a bit more reasonable and fair, especially for younger more malleable minds.

Siblings tend to smack each other around at all ages, and just because a punch or hit looks painful or sounds loud, doesn't mean it actually is. Not that I think we should encourage kids to go around fighting with their brothers and sisters, but honestly, siblings already act that way to begin with, so it's pretty realistic that the Turtles do it too. Besides, I don't really see Raph hitting Don all that much because he's not asking for it as Mikey is, the only times I recall him doing so is when Don actually needs to refocus. And Mikey acts like all younger siblings do-half the time the only reason Raph seems to be beating him up is because Mikey antagonizes him first. All attention is good attention for some kids, doesn't matter if they're getting their ass kicked.

I am aware that the Turtles are beating people up all the time, but it just seems weird because it's within the family and it's so frequent in this show.

I guess it's the loud slaps or the way the characters like double over when they're hit--just seems a little extreme, you know? Or Splinter getting Raph in that arm-lock and kicking him back at his brothers. I was like... dude that's your father.

Sure, I can understand that it's not a great dynamic when you relate it to your own experiences. But you have to take a step back and realize that this dynamic does work for a lot of families, including the Turtles. Not everyone sees through the same lens, and not all siblings see playful shoving as a personal attack. The turtles have no other outlet or friends, it would be pretty impossible to imagine they don't all get sick of each other after awhile.

Edit: Ya beat me to it, Yagami... :P

You also have to look at the situation - they are not just learning ninjutsu for the hell of it, like the OT - they are working towards survival 24/7. Splinter's not gonna be a helicopter parent that baby-proofs everything for his sons. They'd Never Make It.

I've had dreams of family members getting hurt or killed, that have seriously affected me for a day or two at a time - and I KNOW it's just a dream. But I'm not in the middle of trying to survive constant threats on my life. So I can be understanding Splinter's fears. Did he react the best way? Maybe not... Is he a perfect parent? Those don't exist...

No... they asked if he was okay first, right? It's really just when they use actions that look like they actually could really hurt, or use intimidation among family members, that seems to be getting to me.

I know that the sibling banter and smacking don't traumatize, but in this show it really does seem to be a bit more abusive or frequent to me than in older incarnations. I do get upset during similar scenes in other versions. Like in the OT, near the start of season 2, Splinter really freaks out and rages and beats them up. It does seem to border on abuse in cases like that, although I know it's muddled by Splinter being the sensei and worried about his sons' lives. I still think it's legitimate to be upset by it, although I am getting a little tired of debating it.

And maybe I would freak watching the Three Stooges, Stryker... but I guess my issue here is I've loved the TMNT a long time, and it's just been jarring for me to see this sort of stuff when I feel the family has not been this extreme before.

Okay. In the most recent episode: Mikey falls asleep during training; Raph body-slams him. Mikey says "Maybe we're in over our heads;" Raph slams his head with his fist. Raph says "Donnie, you're crowding me," Don backs off as though he's worried about having his ass handed to him.

Raph tells Splinter that they'll be ready next time; Splinter twists Raph's arm behind him, holds him like that, and then kicks him into the others.

A whack is one thing, but these are not playful whacks.

Maybe it's not about what this show would do to impressionable kids' minds, but it's just leaving a bad taste in my mouth when I want to enjoy the family dynamic.

*raise eyebrows*

I just recently watched 2K3, and I see Raph and Don "attacking" Mikey for being a comic relief (in the first episode!). They are not playful wacks cause Don hit Mikey's head with his bo.

It's just... what?

Any kind of 'violence' in this show (that's never shown anyone getting killed, mind you), is VERY low key compared to... say the original Looney Tunes. The amount of guns, bombs, anvils... Wily Coyote had an Arsenal of weapons in his possession all the time..

I'm not comparing it to any other show in my mind--that seems like a red herring to me. I'm comparing it to what seems to me to be abusive in a family.

Can't remember the episode, Yuffie. Maybe it would have bothered me, too. ;)

Raphael only body slams into Mikey when he's not paying attention, which is often. Rough? Maybe, but obviously necessary at how easily Mikey's mind tend to wanders. And Don backing up in fear? Really? Raph just told him to move back, so he did. Why start an argument with him over it when they had more important things to focus on? He's not an overly confrontational turtle, so why would it bother him to step back? If Don was so afraid of Raph I doubt he would've started bantering with him later in the episode when Leo was trying to listen in on April's call.

One thing I did notice in the last two episodes.... Leo did tackle down and start to whomp on Raph at the end of the 'Never say Xever' episode, and in the last one, Don did chase Mikey around the lair after the water balloon prank. So it's not ALL Raph > everyone all the time. But yeah, Raph does love to push, shove and bully his brothers around in this version as oppossed to the 2K3 where he would mostly argue with Leo and pick on Mikey.

Difference in interpretation, I guess. Maybe I'm sensitive to what appears to be bullying or abuse. And here is where I do think it's valid to bring in the kids; I think some kids would be more sensitive to that too. I hope y'all don't treat your families like that in real life? Anyway, are you guys tired of this debate? I kind of am ready for bed.

Edit: I guess it's good that it's not all Raph, Yagami? This would indicate to me that the others aren't scared of fighting back...

I already mentioned that I do ;) It's not uncommon for me to find bruises from who knows what after fighting with my sisters. They just make me laugh. In the end I know it's all playing anyway and we all love each other. I'm sure the turtles are the same. It's really no biggie if you have that kind of relationship with your family.

Um, yes? Is that really so weird?

Anyway, it really is just all a difference in perspective. The turtles definitely act younger in this incarnation than what I'm accustomed to, and that has taken me more getting used to than their supposed bullying of one another. If anything, it's Raphael's verbal jabs that seem more cruel than his actual physical actions, and even then it's pretty obvious he doesn't mean half of what he says.

At least Leo isn't afraid of fighting back. Mikey can't be too afraid since he keeps provoking Raph all the time. Although in real life, sometimes it's hard NOT to pick on the people with foul tempers cause it's just so easy. LOL

Methinks Rooish needs to read the Mirage/Image comics and re-watch the 4kids series. They've always been 'violent' towards eachother.

Curious debate here...

I only got a little brother, in our early years ....our battles were epic!!!

About TMNT dinamic ...I dont see it so disproportionate...

I remember when Raph was punished at home for his behaviour...Mikey miss him a lot... and he thanked to Don for a smack on his head as Raph use to do!!! ...Also I saw how worried to see if Raph was Ok when he was beat by Shredder.... Mikey dont figh back because he dont want...I mean...also remeber when Leo first time slap him like the Space heroes he maked a defensive pose, cos he was surprise that time about it!....later he only keeps talking about his meet with a Pink Brain! He wasnot worried for a slap or a smack from his bros...he dont feel bad about it neither...Only remeber He only felt sad/upset when nodoby of them want to be partner in Krang´s den ...!

About Don stepping back about Raph comment...I think its just Don being shy... noy actuallly afraid!

And about Splinter being hard with them...I think any parent scared by something that can harm his children have ever spoken out or punished them a bit more than usual! ....Just a small example: Long time ago We were visiting in a large dark cave were had rained recently, (usually was safe) , Suddenly I saw end of the cave and started to run out because I did not get wet .... I was just a kid and did not know it could be dangerous ... the only way that my father had to make myself stop was running after me to give me a smack on my head ....! and later he still frightened even...he told me that if the rains had opened a hole in the ground I could had lost forever! ....Thanks my dad for a smack in my head! I was runing in a cave without see were I put my feet! :) lesson learned forever!!!!

Anyway hope Rooish can feel better about the show dinamic with another points of view!! I think TMNT are lovely brothers :tgrin:

Well said! very well said! I think Rooish is overlooking all the GOOD family dynamics in the show, like some of the examples Luzmagica gave and I would like to add to that and say that Mikey and Don hold their own. What about in the first episode when Don points out the power cables, Raph then makes some smart alec comment, but Don comes right back and makes his point making Raph look a little foolish, leading mike to say "You got spanked!" But true Raph hurts Mikey's finger after that which leads me to another point. As some others have mentioned before, I think Mike and, to a lesser extent, Don ask for it sometimes. Some else mentioned that its fun to provoke those who are easily angered, I don't think its Raph being to violent, I think its just him holding his own with his brothers

I don't think the show is too bad. Hell my brother and I had way worse fights. I got chased with knives and he got locked in a freezer.....we're pretty normal kids now.

Also,to me, when someone doesn't fight Raph back....it's not fear, it feels more like....I dunno...maturity maybe? Like I'm not continuing this or whatever. I'm a massive Raph fan and I love this one. Leo is my least favorite and I like this one. So, the show's doing good by me.

Yeah. Roo, I don't want to gang up on ya here, because I think you make a solid point - to screw up that family dynamic would kill the show. TMNT has always been half the action and half that tight brotherhood they have going on (at least for me). But there's been a lot of teasing, fighting, violence etc. from all sides. Well maybe not from Leo, he's the boyscout. :D

Here's what I like to think. Mikey knows what he's in for every time he antagonizes Raph. He doesn't care. That's because pissing off Raph is worth way more to him than a quick smack on the head. And (and this is the big one) Raph would lay down his life for Mike, or Don, or Leo in an instant. They all know this. Raph's sometimes a pain in the ass to deal with, but the guy will defend his brothers to the end. That's where you gotta take yourself out of the equation. We grew up in normal, human families. These guys are mutated monsters that live outside society and fight for their lives every time they go above ground. Honestly the whole scenario should be way more dysfunctional.

As for Splinter... I like that guy. He's doing it right. Gotta toughen those kids up or they'll never leave the lair. :D

To show them that they aren't prepared for Shredder. Basic Martial Arts stuff.

:o .... Fortunately, as we are all a bit older in my class...., my sensei just gives us smacks with the foam sticks, and sometimes says "awkward" ... and that's coming from my sensei and it is quite "humiliating" for us!!!:lol: we are like kids again!!!!!!

Wow. Really? My sibs and I would have fights all the time. My brother used to pretend to hit me with pillows pretending he was hitting me with a chair a la WWE style. It was all in good fun, and we never meant any harm by it. You have to remember that the Turtles are teenagers and brothers. Siblings do that all the time.

And as for Splinter, he's just preparing them for a real fight. There's nothing harsh about that at all as he's the sensei and is trying to teach them what it will be like if they face Shredder and are not prepared. Common sense if you look at it that way.

I agree with Everything Katie said here... Me and My older sister had tons of fights! My husband had two little brothers, he was always fighting with them (he locked one in an outhouse and left him!!!!). My point is that These seem like real brothers to me, And they have their "warm" moments also. The totally love eachother (as family).

I agree about the mustache. The one other thing about his character/design I don't like is how when they hit him with their weapons it does not phase him. It seems like Leo or Raph would cut into him or at least slice some fur.

A wolverine would still get cut and bleed. They gotta work on that if they're gonna keep having Leo and Raph strike with their weapons. Either cut him off screen, or just make Dogpound dodge and block or whatever. Don't make it seem that Leo and Raph's weapons are toys that don't do anything.
