I was having a conversation with a guy at a comic book store here in town and he was telling me that in his experience theres a negative connotation to calling the tmnt simply ninja turtles. Is this universal in the fan world?

A lot of people I know call them ninja turtles. It's just short for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. No one ever told me there was anything wrong with it.

I know it's been a thing in the past but I sort of thought the world had moved on..

This is the dumbest thing I've heard in a long time. It's an abbreviation.

Oh.. you know what I misread this totally on my phone.. I thought we were talking about the word "Ninja" on its own..
Hmm maybe the guy was referencing the Micheal Bay movie that was going to just be called Ninja Turtles? But I honestly do not know.

I'm not a fan of a movie or other official production only being 'Ninja Turtles'. But in casual conversation -- who gives a crap? If there is such person out there that insists that 'Teenage Mutant' be included in reference to it, that person is a moron.

Yeah.. the live action show dropped the "Teenage Mutant" part of the title as well... not to mention the 07 movie was just TMNT.. So I think if official sources find its ok to shorten the name.. it should be just fine in casual conversation.

I've never heard of this before. I'd say abbreviating their name to simply "Ninja Turtles" is pretty common.
The only negative connotation to it that I can think of is Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation and I don't think that show registers on many peoples radars really.

My mother and I would refer to TMNT as "Ninja Turtles" most often back during its heyday, and I still do today. Speaking "TMNT" tends to be reserved for either hardcore fans or when referring to the 2007 movie.

I've always referred to them as Ninja Turtles, and that won't change anytime soon. It's just a shorter way of saying the name. Plus, so many people know them as that, that if I were to say TMNT, people wouldn't know what I was talking about. There's nothing wrong with calling them Ninja Turtles.

As most people have already stated, it shouldn't really matter. People use the term "Ninja Turtles" all the time in other TV programs. Hell, I heard Roger the alien mention them that way in a rerun of American Dad not too long ago. The funny thing is if it weren't for Peter Laird, we wouldn't even have the "Teenage Mutant" part.

Maybe he was talking about the supposed fan-backlash to the TMNT Part 5 title just being "Ninja Turtles" in regard to them supposedly not being mutants in it but rather aliens.
I've always been a big advocate of shortening the name to "Ninja Turtles," particularly for the comics at such a time as when they hit age 20.

Sepaking for myself,I never call them Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and never say TMNT only type it on this message board because its shorthand. I always say Ninja Turtles and always think it in my head. Its simply the well-known form of thier name.

I feel this way too. Because of the potiental of the word "teenage" lumping the turtles in a specific realm in the views of some. That and Ninja Turtles sounds fine as it is.

Don't forget that for the longest time, ninjaturtles.com was the official website. That should be a nice hint concerning the validity of the abbreviation.

I don't understand why there would be, the point is that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is so widely known that even most people who haven't seen any of the series or read any of the comic will still know what you are referring to regaurdless of whether you call it Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, TMNT or Ninja Turtles.

Maybe there's a slight stigma since it became known that Bay's movie was just to be called "Ninja Turtles." That's probably the first and only time shortening the name pissed anybody off.
