View Full Version : The more cartoony art style of certain Season 3 episodes

As everyone noticed there was an animation studio that generally drew the episodes seeming more cartoonish. I actually really liked that style as it fit some of the more "fun" episodes of Season 3.

Some examples were, "Pizza by the Shred," "Invasion of the Turtle Snatchers," "Camera Bugged," "Michelangelo's Birthday," and "The Grybyx."

I actually thought that style worked really well with the funnier and/or more comedic episodes. What did you think of that art style?

I like it. It reminds me of Ken Mitchroney's art in the Archie series.

Heh, I knew I thought the art style seemed like something else from the TMNT franchise, glad you brought that up!

And I guess you can say the "standard" animation for the old toon that was used for most of Seasons 2-7 looks like Chris Allans art. I guess that's where Chris Allen based his designs on anyway.

Who cares? Seriously. It's a cartoon; it's suppose to be cartoony. These threads are pointless.

Way to be a negative nancy and not pay attention to the topic... It's about celebrating a unique style in the OT, and comparing thoughts about it vs others.

I think those episodes looked better than everything, short of the first season which is equally appealing in a 'professional' sense. It flows so smoothe, it's far more expressive than other seasons, and has an insanely cartoony look. Definitely reminiscent of Kens style for sure.

Pic related (but please pardon the caption, it's the only screencap I have to use for reference)-

This is a result of both the storyboard artist and the animators based on their styles; I've heard similar stories about other shows (Transformers, Ghostbusters, GI Joe) with regards to different animation studios; some provide more errors than others and provide their unique take on the character models.

Don't forget Super Bebop and Mighty Rocksteady. That whole scene of Donnie explaining his plan on how to stop them was full of super cartoony expressions. And let's not forget the cartoony look when the Turtles first realized Shredder was acting like Michealangelo in 'Cowabunga Shredhead'.

I think some people mistake this art style for being "cheaper" or not looking as good, but I think people are confusing it with that other animation studio that did some Season 3 episodes. For example, "The Turtle Terminator" was animated horribly, that was the ep with the robot Irma and with Raph's alternate voice. Ep was terrible.

Although one thing a little disappointed about it is Shredder doesn't look as cool in this art style. You have to say something about Shredder, even if he was treated as bumbling comic relief in a lot of episodes, he always looked cool.

I don't really like the cartoonish thing they did , I wish the whole series was like the first 5 episodes , oh man how I like the first 5..

The stuff animated by Toei? Yeah, that was great, even if it was off model quite a bit. I actually wish there were more episodes animated by TMS. Those guys were, and still are consummate pros.

The cartoony stuff was nice to see when it popped up, with all the stretching and squashing going on with the models (those bouncy eyes!). But it felt unevenly distributed. Espcially knowing how crushingly limited animation budgets are, I wonder why the animators chose certain scenes to animate like that over others.

These episodes were all being rushed out at the same time, hence all the animation errors like the bandana mistakes and coloring errors.

Bleh. The quality would have improved if they didn't have so much episodes in season 3 and 4. But I suppose there's no use thinking about that now.

But there were animation errors in every season, even Season 2 which only had 13 episodes.

Hrmmm. You're right, but I felt most of the worst were in those two seasons. Like those still frames where no ones' mouth is moving.

The best animation in the show was from the intro. That is the Turtles cartoon I'd like to see.

I personally didn't care for the "squashy" animation, the scene that was mentioned earlier in Super Bebop and Mighty Rocksteady with Donatello explaining the schematics and his bouncy exgerated movements and facial expressions looked awful to me.

Though I'll concede that sometimes this animation did well to pull off visual gags. The episode with the turtles terminator where "Irma" is trying to to magnitically pull the news van to her, and gets slapped onto the side of it as the van drives off was quite comical.
