IGN just has a bunch of wannabes working for them. When something isn't popular, they bash it, when it is popular they act like they know everything about it. Im sure their TMNT Coverage falls somewhere in one of those 2 brackets

Yeah there is always people out there just waiting for someone to produce something like that. Why not go to a strip club or something like that and you can see all the girls you want and pay less.

So true. I noticed anything made by Nintendo, Square, or RARE automatically by default gets at least a 9, usually a 9.9 or a 10. I've learned to take their scores with a grain of salt. I see others feel the same.

Yeah totally, that's something I forgot to mention was their biasness for certain companies, mostly the ones you mentioned. Its like those companies can do NO wrong in IGNs opinion. I'm a Nintendo fanboy myself. I noticed they gave OOT and MM like 9.9. While those two games are good, they aren't anywhere near the score they got.
I think a lot of sites are guilty of what I like to call "score inflation." Every game has to have at least an 8. It's like they are afraid of offending people who might like the game. Heck, I've seen people whine about reviews that gave Super Mario Sunshine and Zelda: Wind Waker 8s. C'mon! 8's are damn good scores! Certainly nothing to be ashamed of.
Peanut
06-04-2003, 11:40 AM
Actually just about every videogame site and magazine ever gave OOT somewhere between 9.8 and 10. They say it's one of the best games ever created and I tend to agree with them. MM didn't deserve a 9 anything but OOT deserved what it got.

06-04-2003, 07:59 PM
I like Majora's Mask. As a matter of fact, I think MM fans are the minority, if anything.
I actually think OOT is way overrated. I think it gets too much praise simply because it's the first 3D Zelda. C'mon, Hyrule Field is almost empty, unless you're kid Link and night. And combat is a joke. You target one enemy and the other one patiently waits for you to finish the first one off. The final battle is extremely lame. Am I the only one that thinks Ganon's human form is much harder than the monster form? The only thing you have to worry about in the last battle is running out of ammo. It's shoot a light arrow at his head, whack his tail with the hammer or if you have it, Biggoron's Sword, and repeat about 20 times until you get the Master Sword back. Then start the process all over again with the Master Sword. All the while Ganon slowly inches toward you at 2 milimeters per second. If you're going to make the battle that easy, then don't make it so long. And then of course, there is the camera. Half the time, it zooms in on a wall and you can't even see what you're doing.
Now I think OOT is a very good game. I've played through it a few times. But it's not THAT good.
Karpo_007
06-05-2003, 04:19 AM
Yes it is that good. The is nothing wrong with the battle system, you are the only one I have ever heard complaining about it. So what if the beast form is easier? Who said it would need to be harder? And it has a good story, wich Majora's mask clearly lacks.

Ocerina of Time has got to be one of, if not the greatest game ever made. The cinema scenes are movie quality, the control is flawless, and the music is amazing. It deserves a 10. Also, anyone who spells Raphael with a F should be DRUG OUT IN THE STREET AND SHOT IN THEIR SLEEP! IGN is a bunch of overpaid crack heads who need to study their spelling.....and maybe their art history too (heh).

And it has a good story, wich Majora's mask clearly lacks.
You've got to be kidding me? Good story? GOOD STORY?
It's pretty much the same exact story as LoZ and LTTP: Rescue Zelda, kill Ganon, and secure the Trifroce. Yeah, REAL original. *sarcasm*
And Majora's Mask has a great story. At least it's original. Name another game where you have to save the world from the moon.
And I see my arguements are "ludicrous" because you don't agree with them. If you think OOT is one of the best games ever made, then you need to play some of the oldies again.

Yes, it has a GOOD story, I never said original. Majoras mask jus re uses the textures, animations everything really. It doesn't have a good story, just some battle aginst time. Thats why Zelda fans don't like it.
Only Zelda game that is better tha Ocarina of time is A Link to the Past. Zelda 2: Adventures of Link is better than Majora's Mask.

There is nothing wrong with Zelda 2, I like it! It was just an example, I didn't mean it was bad. It's very diffrent from the usual Zelda games, wich have been basicly the same after A link t the Past, with just improved visuals and new surroundings.

I liked Majora's Mask, I'unno. I couldn't stop playing it. Once I beat it though I didn't really have the desire to again. I guess it lacks the replay factor of other Zelda games, but for me it's cuz there's SO much to do in that game. Ocarina of Time is IMO one of the very best games ever and deserves at least a 9.

06-06-2003, 04:43 PM
Well what bothers me in MM is basicly that it doesn't really relate to anything, being diffrent "dimension" and all. That, and that fact they reused everything. It isn't Nintendo's style, but it seems Wind Waker will have a sequel to. Hopefully a real one and no the like of Majoras Mask.
Here is my ratings for the Zelda games:
The Legend Of Zelda: 8
The game that started it all. Not much of a story yet, but it certainly did set the standard for future Adventure games.
The Legend Of Zelda 2: Adventures of Link: 8
It's totally diffrent game from the first one but still has the Zelda feeling in it. It is the most unique Zelda game in the series.
The Legend Of Zelda: A Link to the Past: 10
The game that almost toally created the Zelda again. Still undefeated in the series.
The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina of Time: 9
Basicly A Link to the Past in 3D, and it works. Only game in the series where we can see Adult link.
The Legend Of Zelda: Majora's Mask: 6.5
Re uses Ocarina engine, but fails to create the "Zelda feeling".
The Legend Of Zelda: Wind Waker: 9
Ocarina of time with huge "Waterworld" like surroundings. Haven't played it trough yet, but the game has done very well so far. I love how it continues the story of Ocarina.

I also liked Zelda 2 but my memories of it are skewed by the fact that when I was a kid that game kicked my ass more times than I care to remember. It took me four years to beat it, and I've only beaten it once without the help of a Game Genie. I like the game, I loved that Link's Shadow was the final boss, I liked the story about Link's blood being used to resurrect Ganon... I just hated getting my ass kicked by it until I figured out how to navigate the mazes in the castles.
And I thought Majora's Mask had a good story too, I liked that it was a departure from the normal story of saving Zelda and battling Ganon. As for the graphics and all that, I feel if it aint broke don't fix it. Much as I love the N64, they were limited in what they could do graphics and sound-wise, and the Zelda games were really pushing it to begin with. I have no problem with the graphics in that game.
And I loved the battle system in both of those games, I think the control scheme in both Zelda games was damn near perfect for the type of game it is. If the enemies always ganged up on you you'd have almost no chance of winning, especially when you're in a room with tons of enemies. And I did think the Hyrule Fields in OoT were a little too barren and void of enemies.
Majora's Mask gets major points because it had one big thing that OoT didn't have: CLASSIC ZELDA MUSIC! DUN-duh... dun-dah-dahda DAH... um, yeah.
Plus Link's Helix Sword in the final battle of MM was kickass.
I dunno, I think Majora's Mask gets a bad rap mostly. I think it's very underrated. I'd rather play Majora's Mask than Zelda 2, but I love both of the "black sheep" Zelda games anyway. To me they're both fun, but Link to the Past is probably the best in the series. I just can't hate on a Zelda game.
Karpo_007
06-06-2003, 04:49 PM
I don't hate it, but don't like it much either. Zelda theme is always nice to hear, but it isn't what creates the "Zelda feel". the game is good graphics and gameplay wise, altough I dislike the whole mask thing. Well it does score some originality points like Zelda 2.

A note on the control/targeting system in the N64 Zelda games:
Today I bought and started playing the new game "Evil Dead: Fistful of Boomstick". When overwhelmed with large numbers of enemies, you can use a "lock-on" targeting system to attack the closest enemy, similar to the Zelda games. However, while you're attacking one enemy with a chainsaw or shotgun, one, two, three, or four other enemies can attack you from the back at will. There are attacks and spells that can take down multiple enemies, just like OoT, but you need them way more in this game than you ever did in Zelda. I tell ya, I never appreciated Zelda's attack system more than I do now. I wish the other Deadites would hang back and watch while I was tearing a hole in one of them with my chainsaw, instead I'm constantly getting mauled by 8 or 9 at once.
On the other hand, if you aim things right, sometimes you can shoot one enemy with exploding shotgun shells and the bullets will go through and hit another enemy behind him as well, and that's really cool.

I just wanna say that OOT is truly one of the best games ever created. Majora's Mask is alright but not nearly as good IMHO.
Oh, and since we're on the subject of Zelda games, I have a question for you all. A friend of mine, has a Gamecube, and he was telling me about this Zelda game he bought (I forgot the name) and it was supposedly exactly like Ocarina of Time except a couple changes made here and there. Is this complete bogus?
Oxnard Hamster
06-08-2003, 02:25 AM
Okay, you reprimand Majora's Mask for re-using things, yet OOT re-uses elements from LTTP.
Hell, it practically IS LTTP in 3D, except less combat and toned down difficulty. Collect 3 items before you get the Master Sword. And those 3 items correspond to the forces of Wisdom, Power, and Courage. Both have a light and dark world. You have to collect more stuff in the dark world so people can help you break down the barrier to Ganon's lair. Then you slay Ganon, save Zelda and the Triforce. Then you and Zelda do the wild thing and produce lots of mini Links and Zeldas.
.........
Or not.
And oh no, MM has a...a....clock?! No! If I remember right, a lot of the classic games have a time limit. Super Mario Bros. 3, the single best selling video game of all time, has a time limit. Nobody cared about it.
And the only reason people hate Zelda 2 is because it's harder. I think people have just become soft playing OOT, MM, and WW. Face it, those aren't the hardest video games on the planet.
Oxnard Hamster
06-08-2003, 02:40 AM
Well what bothers me in MM is basicly that it doesn't really relate to anything,
Actually, it does. Notice the intro to WW points out that the hero never came back to stop Ganon once he escaped. Most players take that to mean Link never made it out of Termina.

To tell you the truth, I only played like hafway trough the game before I got to bored of it,[I don't own the game, just borrowed it from my friend] but if Link didn't get back in the end, then I guess you got a good point.
