Just some questions, what do you think of this Leo on this show so far?
Do any of you like how he's turned out? I was nervous the first time if he was going to be great, but I really like him in this.
How about his decisions? Do you think he's proven to be a good leader so far? I think he has.
How about his personality? What do you guys think of it? Do you think it's similar to some Leonardos we've known before in TMNT? Do you think this brings more to his fanbase?
Also, Iveyanglelo pointed out that he's a bit smug on this series. Do you believe that's true? If so, just to let you know, even humble people have their arrogant moments. Don't worry. I think he's still the honorable warrior we admire here.
Lastly: Space Heroes. What do you think of him watching Space Heroes? Does this make him look bad, better, or just in-between?
I'm interested to hear what you have to say.:tsmile:

He's a more naive and rookie Leonardo who wants to become the hero he is destined to become. It's great.

As I have said before, I have really enjoyed how Leo is on the show. The one problem I had with Leo in past versions of TMNT was that he was a bit hard to relate too. But here, he really does come off as a 15 year old kid. I'm glad that he isn't as strict as he was before and that he jokes around with his brothers. I also like how Leo and Raph are getting along with each other alot more too.

I like him as he is depicted as the leader of the four turtles and the most disciplined. He is named after Leonardo da Vinci. I got to know about it today!:trolleye:

he definitely has moments of vulnerability as well as moments of smugness. i think that drives home the "teenage" aspect of the character. as for the space heroes thing, i think it's awesome. he's a fanboy for a show and character that he really admires and aspires to reflect. imagine him at like 20-something, still trying to live up to the idea of a captain ryan, who at that point would have informed so much of his life. its great characterization.

Funny enough, da Vinci sometimes was perceived as undisciplined:

Anyway, great characterization and I love the Filmation look to Space Heroes.
Leonardo is easily the most improved character. In the past he wasn't likable; now he is.

Leonardo has always been likeable, considering the mass fanbase for the character that existed in the 27 years before the Nick version existed.

You post implied he wasn't likeable as if you were speaking in general.
Anyway I loved Leo in the old toon but that's probably because I like Cam Clarke's voice and the color blue.

Well, there's two main ways a character can be be likable- as a person or a personality. But a likable individual does not always make for an interesting character or story. I think we will probably get a really strong arc from the get go because of this characterization.

I really dislike this Leo. He is very childish and is WAY to overconfident. 2003 Leonardo was personally my favorite, as he was mature smart strategetic and had an amazing voice actor. I dont dislike Biggs but i have to say Sternikkalas is much better. The mirage Leo was cool, til he lost his hand...
Bauer536
12-12-2012, 03:09 PM
Interesting points. Yeah, he is pretty childish in this series, but maybe that's sometimes a good thing. Think about it. At home, he's a typical teenager who sometimes acts like a doofus over Space Heroes, but still happens to be a driven, charismatic leader. I mean, I just don't want anyone to suddenly think he's like Mikey. Not at all. In fact, Leo happens to be smarter than Mikey.:twink:
I'm sorry. I put this thread up out of reaction over some negative review, and it made me think that I had been kidding myself over this character. I mean, I always wonder if everything I say about him is exaggerated or wrong. It's just, I really think this Leonardo is so much better than the 2k3 Leo in my opinion. So what if he's a bit overconfident? I mean, I like a Leonardo who doesn't always say, "It's my fault. I let you down" crap. Besides, I've said before that humble people can act arrogant, too. We should all think about that.

You do make a point. It's just, still. Am I kidding myself? Do I have to stop calling him smart or something just because one guy says he can be a doofus? I always find myself wondering if I'm misjudging the character. That's one reason why I like him. He's not Donnie, but he's got a mind of his own. In this toon, especially, I don't think it has been destroyed at all. What do you think?

Because he quotes science fiction in real situations and usually builds himself up to get knocked down a peg. He's a guy trying really hard to be a typical tv show leader but without the experience or poise to pull it off.
Mikey's just Mikey. He's already where he wants to be. No issue there. Leo isn't, in this series atleast.

Hey, don't beat yourself up. I like this thread and feel you've made some good points. I like this Leo because he's still learning how to be a leader. Yes, he's arrogant at times, but so was 2K3 Leo and even 2K7 Leo was arrogant. As for his love of Space Heroes, I like it and feel like I can relate to it with my own fandoms. Leo idolizes Captain Ryan and wants to be a great hero like him, but he also knows he has to do things his own way at times. It'll be interesting to see where this goes as the series progresses.
I've always been a Leo fan, and this Leo is just as good as the others, maybe a little different but still cool. He's acting like a kid, and I love that he and Raph get along a lot better than they have in previous incarnations.

A) dont start a thread to discuss a topic and then get all butt-hurt when there are points of view you dont agree with.
B) it not black-and-white "he's entertaining because of the mistakes he makes". the fact that he has flaws and makes mistakes shows theres more of a depth to this version of the character than previous incarnations. it shows awesome potential for character growth and personality developments. this is a good thing, bruh. prolly one of the BEST reasons to like a character, actually.

If anything I'm bashing previous versions of Leo for being boring cardboard cut out characters.

I don't know. Maybe. It's just also that you brought up the truth about your likes toward Leonardo. It's ridiculous. And why do you think you're better than everyone else? Nobody is perfect. I can safely say a lot of kids today would want to play as Leonardo with this version.
It helps Leo was a lot relatable, his bushido obsession was traded with sci-fi obsession, and he likes hanging around with his brothers, Raph especially.
I really like they see each other as equals. Oh, there IS a rivalry, but not to the extremity of the 2k7 movie. Probably helps Splinter actually deflects whenever that happens (as what he did with Leo and Raph when they get rowdy in Mousers Attack).

He's not the overly stereotyped leader that so many people write him as. He's not killing people in the street, and he's not trying to commit seppuku if a mission goes wrong...
And the whole thing with Space Heroes is just cute.. :) He's looking so hard for a heroic role model to base himself off of...

I haven't been a big fan of any incarnation of Leo in the cartoons (The first two movies every turtle is awesome). In the OT I just saw him as the plain and boring leader type, not particularly interesting, contrarily Raph, Donnie, and Mikey all had specific character traits that made them interesting. the 4Kids Leo wasn't bad but I wasn't the biggest fan of that entire show regardless. However, I'm in love with the current show and the way (like many others have pointed out) Leo is sort of new to this leader thing and is figuring it out as he goes along, it's pure awesomeness. The voice acting of Jason Biggs doesn't hurt either, I've never really noticed the intricacies of voice acting when I was a kid watching the OT cartoon, but as an adult I admire all 4 of the turtles voices in this series, they are fantastic.
I didn't really like Leonardo as a character until 2K3. For me, it was a two-fold thing: firstly, his drive, skill and discipline were very admirable. Secondly, his inability to accept he couldn't always win was a HUGE character flaw. So, no, he wasn't perfect.
Because of this, it has let me like Leonardo more in the new series. His flaw in this show could be considered his cockiness, but it's like we are watching him in the beginning stages of him developing into the great leader he wants to be.
It is interesting that he chose a 'star trek' captain to emulate, as traditionally the show is known for not only leadership, but also its high moral values.

Yeah, 2K3 Leo had too much pressure to deal with at times because he felt he needed to be perfect and echo Splinter's standards. But this Leo doesn't feel that way at all. Yes, he wants to be a good leader, but he doesn't feel like he has to pressure himself into it yet. He can do his own thing and still be good at what he does.

I've always liked Leo, but I have to say the Nick version has easily become my favorite. He does have more of a relatable personality as some have said, but you can still see him growing into the more serious character he's usually portrayed as.
I love that he's emulating Captain Ryan and has some Space Heroes quote for any situation, even when it doesn't fit. He's got some new quirks and is inexperienced and naive, but he's driven and determined. He knows the kind of person he wants to be; he's just not quite there yet. I think watching his leadership skills progress will be good overarching character development.

All Turtles to a degree possess some overconfidence in this show from the start except for Raph, though Leo uses it in order to learn from his mistakes, and typically Leo learns them the quickest, which allows him to build his charachter. I feel he uses Space Heroes as a way to learn how to be a better person and it reflects it with all of the coincidences that the Turtles have faced. OT Leo sounded too rigid and too serious who never had time to chill and 4kids Leo is just a bit too hard on himself and expects more than he can do. Along with Leo from the movies, this Leo is very well-rounded, has great fighting skills, and just understands that having good ethics is all that matters.

When I first read the title "Leonardo's Leadership", I though you were being redundant. It's funny, but I guess I've come to associate the two words that it's hard to separate them. It's also made me realize how much "Leonardo leads" is still integral to this incarnation.
He still wants to be the one calling the shots. He doesn't hesitate to let his brothers know how he thinks they should be living their lives, how ninja are supposed to act, how the world should be. He builds himself up on lofty ideals and high standards only to fall down when he cant meet them.
What this Leo has is more balance; his gushing love for Captain Ryan not only simplifies his desire to be a paradigm of heroism, but points out how childish it is. That often during an episode, he'll watch the show, get some idea in his head to behave/think a certain way, only for that idea to deflate mere minutes after is comical. It also shows how far he has to go before he can become a good leader.
But he also seems more willing to listen to others. Look at his face when others have an idea or information to impart; he'll often be the first one to pay any attention even if he shoots it down afterwards. This makes his quiet demeanor look less like a pompous know-it-all, and more like someone who is seeks to understand and reach solutions. He wants to be a good leader, and he wants to go about it the right way; if he can realize and rely on the strengths of others at the right moments, he moves one step closer to being one.
Best of all, he acts like a kid! He likes having fun with his brothers, and he's equally mischievous and playful, in turns with being skeptical and distrustful of others. That he can be wrong at times is not just so the audience can point out how not perfect he is. He's learning important lessons a long the way.
An example of just how good he's got it in this universe is the episode "Never Say Xever". His act of mercy, born out of his beliefs in fairness and chivalry, is proven right in the end. But before that, his brothers put him through the ringer for awhile, and he's forced to struggle with his way of thinking. And yet through all that, I was genuinely rooting for him. Made me realise that, even if Leo isn't my favorite turtle, that doesn't mean that his convictions and personality aren't admirable or likeable.
Anyway, loving how this show, maybe because it's still in it's first season, hasn't got to any character development arcs. It's just been episodic, and all the brothers have had time to shine (and mouth off). They're allowed to just BE without having to rush towards 'becoming'. I'm actually worried, because I don't think this Leo needs some big dramatic event to turn his life around. I'd almost rather see it happening slowly, and subtly. Either way, he's a good kid, and I can see him growing into a true leader.

I think it also gives him a "why". I certainly think the OT had traces of this- the arcade witch and the 3 musketeers episodes come to mind but I think it's an interesting potential conflict too- can Leo reconcile two different traditions?

This Nick version of Leo is okay, but he seems more like a "Tween" Mutant Ninja Turtle (11-13 years old) rather than a 15 year old because of his fanboy Captain Ryan moments. (Teenagers today, especially if they are 15 and 16 are exposed to a lot more "grownup" topics and situations in which the OT and 2K3 depictions of TMNT more reflected the seriousness of being a teenager but yet still having that child-like energy.)
But I'm not too surprised because its for the Nickelodeon demographic who are geared toward younger kids rather than compared to 2K3 or OT which was for network television. I think the "Captain Ryan"/Space Heroes obsession is a double-edged sword because on one hand it makes his character more well-rounded, but on the other if he becomes too interested in it where it influences his decision making on "being a leader" it comes across as immature. ...But we're viewing this show with our adult eyes and not necessarily from a child's who will obviously not be going so in-depth about it (which frankly is what Nick is only concerned about).
I guess the show is leaving some development in the future, but he's just too childish or tweenish to be considered a teenager. Plus in general its somewhat unfair to already be comparing Nick Leo to other Leos (OT and 2K3) since the Nick series is still in its first season.
In my opinion, I still prefer OT Leo because with disappointment he was hard on himself like 2K3 Leo, but he wasn't as whiny as the 2K3 Leo was and OT Leo didn't have the arrogance compared to 2007 Leo or Nick Leo versions. True, he was rigid in personality but I felt it was understandable being the pillar of support/leadership among his brothers, otherwise he would have been considered "weak" by them. To support this, most of the time his weaknesses and reflective self-doubt are more exposed when he's away from his brothers' company (i.e. "Unidentified flying Leonardo", "Leonardo the Renaissance Turtle", "Take Me To Your Leader", or "Snakes Alive").
Ultimately I think where our (within the Technodrome community) opinions differ is how far does this leadership quality extended to. In the Nick version it seems to be more focused on battles, but in the other versions (OT and 2K3) it was also in terms of family leadership, beyond the battlefield. In addition, while some may see his personality as rigid or bland in other versions...some may see it as presenting a cool/calm, strong demeanor because possibly Leo doesn't have the "luxury" of becoming completely vulnerable in front of his brothers or family members when such high expectations are placed on him or at the very least, he thinks he does.

As for the Captain Ryan thing, I disagree because there are teenagers and even adults who like things like that. Heck, our love of Ninja Turtles may seem immature to some people, but it's our fandom and what we like no matter how old we are. Also, not all of his decisions have focused around Space Heroes. In "Never Say Xever" he showed the Purple Dragon mercy because he felt it was the right thing to do and not because of an episode of Space Heroes. I thought maybe that would be the case, but it wasn't, which shows that he can think for himself if the situation calls for it. His idolization of Captain Ryan isn't necessarily immature either. How many times have you wished you could be like one of your idols? I think his obsession with Space Heroes is a good thing for now. Will it lead him into trouble later? Maybe, but for now, it's just a tame little hobby that isn't doing him any harm at the moment.

i love the Leonardo, some are saying too over confident i felt as if hes not confident enough lol, hes clearly learning and its fun to think what would u do in the same scenerio as him, it makes this all a learning process for all of us, hes doin his best without [again to me] being over confident and even pushy like the 1st movie version whom i may love even more to this one, so to me so far i think hes absolutely perfect...

Well, he does have a bit of overconfidence at times, but he's also still learning how to be a better leader as well.

I'm surprised so many people here think Leonardo has been acting too over confident and cocky in this show. If anything, I'd say that would describe Raphael more. Anyway, Leonardo has always been my favorite TMNT and I like how he is portrayed, for this show, but I prefer the more serious/badass Leo. I think I prefer all of the characters to be more serious/badass. I prefer more ninja and less teenager. However, I really like how all of them get along so well. Makes me wonder if there will be some event in the future that will change this.

I hope not. That would suck if they just decided to hit the reset button and go back to generic "bad ass" characters.
Also, Teenage comes first. Ninja comes third.

Yeah, I guess I'm just used to how they were usually portrayed in the past. However, even though it does have it's flaws,I really do enjoy this show. I thought I was going to hate it but it's really well done.

I like how they actually act like teenagers in this show and how they're still learning how to work as a team and learning to be ninjas. That's the best aspect about this new incarnation.

This is exactly how I feel.:tcool: When I was fifteen, I did have my immaturity along the way. Even in my twenties, there are things that I love doing that makes me a bit childish. Heck, I even quote lines from the Lord of the Rings films.:tlol: And yes. We can be considered immature if we like TMNT. However, not all of us are. Can we come off a bit immature? Absolutely. Everybody can become that way when it comes to certain things they love. I know I can with this.:twink:
Plus, I have agreed with everything that you have mentioned about "Never Say Xever." This was what I've pointed out, too. It just shows that he can be himself without being somebody else. I mean, I love this Space Heroes concept. It does make him a bit childish, but at least he's still mature for his age. I mean, he looks like he takes responsibility for his actions. Leo is still Leo. Can there be a way to make him less childish when watching Space Heroes or whatever in the future without quoting the captain in a goofy tone? Absolutely. In fact, I want to see a Leonardo who is not only interested in Sun Tzu or Samurais. This science fiction idea works.:tsmile:

What are you talking about? Leo is already badass.:tcool: Yes, he's not killing anyone, but I still think he's awesome when he's slicing up the Kraang droids.:tsmile:

^^^I agree
I've said this many times, in my opinion *THIS IS THE BEST LEO EVER!!!!* :D The other Leo's (except ot Leo) were To perfect. Everything the guy did bugged me. The ot Leo was to corny. This Leo is a perfict blend. And as others have said, the guy is smart also. :twink:
Just entertaining like that? Gosh. You know, now I know why I stopped making my own threads. You make me think this Leo is useless. Thank you for making me feel like I have no purpose of liking him.
I don't Just like Leo because he messes up, I like him because he is no longer perfect. He is still a good leader and a great fighter, but he is also a fun teenager. Which in my opinion makes him a much more enjoyable character

It's still funny how you guys get so offended by the idea that Leo isn't perfect or whatever.
I think after last week we can describe this Leo as a Geek. Really fun stuff with the space heroes fandom. I really like that interpretation.

How was Leo ever perfect? In every series he makes a number of mistakes that leads to downfalls.

Well, I'm sure if we got all serious and broke it down you would be right... But that is the way I felt about him. Now (as someone else said already) he is more relatable:D
I liked the brainy smurf analogy
I like him in this series because he makes mistakes and is kind of a flawed character. Way more entertaining. He was practically Brainy Smurf in all previous incarnations only replace "Papa Smurf says..." With "Master Splinter says..."

Yes, Leo has been shown to have flaws every time, and I'm sure this Leo has them, too. We just haven't seen too much of it yet.

I'm enjoying the take on Leo's character in this series. As many have mentioned, he is still a Leader in the making. He makes mistakes and learns from them and aspires to become a great hero just like his sci-fi idol. To me he feels like a younger, more naiive version of 2k3 Leo.
Though I also think he has a smugness to him in this incarnation. One particular scene that struck me was in "Attack of the Mousers" right at the end of the episode when the Turtles are hanging out in the lair.
Splinter: I hope you all see that my choosing your battles poorly you created your own crisis.
Don: Eh, there's definitely some irony there.
Leo: Ok, it go a little out of control but we learned our lesson, and at least we got April's phone back.
I don't know if its just me, but the way Leo's line was delivered made him sound like a snotty teenager to me. Kinda felt like he was talking back to Splinter.

Well, I think he was trying to reassure his sensei, but I can see where it can come off as a bit snotty or arrogant.
